The term staple foods is reserved for foods that have a long shelf life. Many food companies are adamant about making foods that can last on shelves for a longer time because in the long run it’s better for them. Better for storage, better for transport, longer shelf life. How long can that shelf life actually be? Well let’s take a look at 10 foods that never expire.
If you enjoyed this list of 10 Foods that shouldn't ever need an expiration date, then comment: #Food #Crazy #Top10
TIMESTAMPS:
0:32 Sugar
1:57 Instant Coffee
3:02 Powdered Milk
4:25 Soy Sauce
5:35 Popcorn Kernels
6:52 Red Wine
8:09 Canola Oil
9:19 Spam
10:27 Dry Beans
11:49 White Vinegar
SUMMARIES:
- Of course sugar never expires - the most evil food in the world will hang in there haunting you from your cupboards for the rest of your life. Why doesn’t sugar expire? Well there’s a super science-y explanation behind that one.
- The smell of Instant Coffee is quite amazing. There are not many things that can instantly perk you up after just one smell. Fresh ground coffee is always the best but instant coffee is a good buffer when that isn’t available.
- So let’s be clear - like everything else on this list powdered milk can go bad if not stored properly. Powdered milk, also known as dried milk, is chalked full of preservatives to keep it useable for years upon years.
- After some research, a lightbulb went off and it turns out that soy sauce is yet another one of those staple items that will not expire. Like many seasonings and sauces, soy has acid-hydrolyzed vegetable protein. This veggie protein also contributes to long-lasting shelf life.
- Popcorn kernels are one of those foods that can just sit on a shelf and wait patiently for someone to feel like cooking them up. This is not only amazing it’s comforting. Seeing as popcorn is actually a pretty healthy snack before being loaded up with butter and all sorts of random stuff for flavor.
- es, that’s right your beloved red wine can last for hundreds of years. As long as it is of good quality and it’s stored correctly. What is a good quality wine? Look for information about where the wine was made or how long the fruits aged for, and when you get as far as opening the bottle, smell it.
- At one time there was a huge controversy over canola oil - people were confused about how bad it was for you. The oil is vegetable-based and from Canada. Yet, it’s hard to find out exactly which vegetable is being used. This sounds like a product that would enjoy a long shelf life.
- People just don’t believe that anything in a can be healthy. So let’s take a look at why people believe Spam can go bad. We all know that once meat is processed, it needs to be eaten in a certain amount of time.
- Most people avoid beans because they don’t know how to cook them. Or, they think they take too long to cook - and to be honest canned beans are way easier to deal with. Toss them in a pot and stir for a few minutes. Then add them to just about anything. Dry beans need to be boiled or soaked for a certain amount of time.
- White Vinegar isn’t something that many people think of as a staple - what do you need white vinegar for? A lot actually. It can be used to pickle fruits and vegetables and clean meat before cooking. And it’s actually pretty popular when you are making your own sauces and marinades. Think about it, if vinegar is good for all these things it makes sense that it has a long shelf life.

Yeah, I had honey for 9 years, and I've eaten some on my toast two days ago. I'm still alive and feeling sweet!
It will crytalize, that's about it !
just like dry beans white rice will remain good for a long time
Along with salt, pure maple syrup, honey, pure vanilla extract, corn starch, hard tac, actually a long list of things.
I like to freeze dry my own whole milk, powder it and seal in Mylar bags with an O2 absorber. 25 year shelf life.
that's just too much work
@@randyquench8731 the machine does the work. They are expensive though.
Must be nice to have the money to do something that way. I don't mean that in a negative way either I genuinely think that would be nice
I have a question? What are Mylar bags as I have never heard of em . I always use zip locks bags
@@trudytrowbridge8268 Its like a metallic bag, silver in color i believe with a plastic liner, not totally sure but there good for storage, you used a hot iron to seal them
Spam is a Filipino favorite. I'm American and I love it too if cooked, fried, correctly. And when my grandmother passed away we saved her specially uncanned cooked beans frozen for years and still tasted great as if she had made them yesterday. Best beans I've ever had and I really miss them, but of course I miss my grandmother dearly.
Thanks for sharing this Mike Chisel! 😄 And may your grandmother rest in peace. 😇
Worcestershire sauce also has a very long shelf life 40+ years. It actually gets better with age. What about Port? That too has long shelf life.
I just ate a can of progresso beans that was over 10 years old and it tasted perfect.
Don't forget mcdonald's, that sh!t defy time,lol👍
Did we forget dried pasta? It's a dried food. We've got some that's about 11 years old we regularly eat. If the moisture content of a food item is below a certain threshold, it won't go bad because bacteria can't grow in it.
didn't it get weevle?
@@joelrasool744 No. Pasta's, dried noodles, and similar, last for many years Rice is different. We freeze rice for 6 weeks which kills weevils, eggs and any foreign harmful bodies, and then allow to dry out at normal room temperature for 2 days. Then into a dry container, i.e. glass, clean milk, plastic, cartons, or any suitable air tight containers. We use rice that's 10 years old without any problem. The same with other grains.
How could you forget about honey!!!
🤔
well honey also has sugar so in a sense the video covered honey although in an indirect way
arnold shmitt They did not cover honey at all. Tons of food has sugar; chocolate, bread, dairy and cereal. Honey is from pollen!!
Good point! 🐝 💐 🌸 🌷 🌹 🌻 🌺 🍯 🐻 😋
A 3 thousand year-old jar of honey was found in an Egyptian tomb!! The people who found it tasted it and examined it, concluding that it was perfectly edible!! I would never do that, don't wanna mess with no mummy!!! :-) :-)
I agree. I've been using some powdered milk that my grandmother passed down to me that she inherited from her mother. The milk is probably 137 years old. I drink a little every day. I'm 40 but look like I'm 20.
Where can I buy a mirror like yours?
When I was 8 years old, at dinner on Grandma's farm, I heard Mom and Grandma speaking in Polish, laughing and looking at me. I asked Mom what was so funny. I was told that Grandma said the the corn we were eating she had been canned the week I was born.

You may eat all the butter you want, however the payoff when your coronary arteries become blocked is the pits. Ever check out the cost of getting just the stent put in? Microwave it and it will resoften just like with brown sugar.
That means moisture is getting into the container...which shortens its shelf life.
Stuff to make the average cup of coffee will continue on! That makes my heart glad for humanity's future.
For all the people saying Honey! Salt! Rice! it's only 10 foods, not all of them
I have tested Spam at room temps... using several flavors and several cans of each. I could see changes start to take place two years past best by date. Probably was still good a while after that, but that would be my limit for storage shelf life.
Spam is discusting

I have watched tons of these types of videos. This one is by far the most entertaining.
I can personally confirm the SPAM one, 7 years stored, I couldn't taste the difference. And I did not get sick or anything.
You forgot: rice, starch, baking soda, salt, all hard liquor.
Salt doesn't go bad but it does lose its flavour. Brown rice goes bad.

I made Grandma Brown's Baked Beans & they were delicious. I wondered if I really needed the onion & yes the beans need the onion. You can't taste it. They were so easy & I froze half for later.
Nestea is another thing that last a long time. When Nestea stopped making unsweetened instant tea I bought every jar I could find. (112 jars) the date of my last jar I opened said 2012. It's as fresh as it was when I bought it. I have quite a few left & Nestea started making it again, but I got my tea for $2.42. That's a lot cheaper than they are now. I drink it everyday with peppermint candy in it. I use 3 heaping spoons of instant tea & 4 peppermint candies for 2 quarts of water. My mother in law used to hang a small candy cane on her cup of tea. It's really good. Why buy flavored teas? Make your own.
Nice ! Great score. I love hearing those stories. I've been buying " clearance " from stores for over 20 years. I don't know how many, but a lot of people have a lack of understanding when it comes to how food is kept. You did good on that tea thing. Your reaping the rewards now.
Thank you bro I appreciate the information, thank you for helping me.
You're welcome!
Soy sauce is a long process to do it right. As a chef I used to work with would say, "you don't make soy sauce, YOU BUY IT" lol
I see spam has a 25% less salt version now. I wonder if this will lessen it's long term shelf life.
I bought some over the weekend and now I'm wondering the same thing.
It, Spam- like most canned food, is packaged with a lot of salt, so I honestly don't think a 25% decrease will really make that much difference to its possible preservation capability. If anyone knows for sure from personal use though, we'd appreciate your input.
Good wine? Untouched by human feet.
I Love the video clips..spot on. Whoever chose them, thanks. It was alot of laughs. The one video clip I might have added for the popcorn part..."Married with children" where Peg makes 20 yr old jiffy pop. (Yes, I love that series)
Oh, I can't resist- (please forgive me, no harm meant) shouldn't your preference for a sit-com lean toward Home Improvement with your famous namesake, Tim Allen?
I have done tests on long term foods.. I tried spam bought over a year, and several flavors. After two years past exp date. the cans started to pop when I squeezed them. New cans do not do this. I also tested ground coffee in the vacuumed foil, after 20 years, it still tasted the same.
( not Andre) my philosophy is: if the can doesn't look like a mini football, and no leaks or rust, check it and see. 58 and lived in survival mode a few times, but blood pressure 106/72.
"Why aren't we making our own soy sauce"
Because you need to ferment it. that's why.
You don't just mix salt, water, wheat and soy together. It requires 6+ months of fermentation with koji.
It doesn't expire, because it's already mould.

Popcorn is incredibly hard on your digestion, even if you put nothing on it.
Thank you for the information ❤
Popcorn makes me want to jump out of the frying pan... lol
I remember reading that the colonists in our early history made popcorn and ate it with milk like we do with cold cereal.
popcorn can be ground to grits, corn flour, Polenta... Store popcorn!
@@douglasswales6628 Dried hominy white corn is typically used to make grits. Popcorn is a different type of corn called Zea mays variety everta. Polenta is made from eight-row flint corn. Corn starch and corn flour are made from various types of corn, but usually a yellow variety. My family has been in the corn farming business for over 150 years. My favorite type is Silver Queen.
White vinegar is also excellent to take the sting out of a sunburn. I used this many times and it helped to heal my skin right up!

Honey and water never expire
good point
Antimicrobial, antibacterial, antifungal, honey is natures perfect food, and while it will crystalize if the glucose level is higher then the fructose level, just heat the jar up slowly and its ready to eat
@@jordan0305 How? It's simple H2O...
Honey yes because it contains a lot of sugar, water itself can obviously expire ( the more water a food contains, the easier it is to spoil if you think about it, water is the perfect habitat for many bacterias) but treated water in bottles technically never expires. By the way, the expiration date on water bought in the stores is not of the water but of the plastic bottle.
@@user-cd5kp2qd5l In that case, the one expiring is the food, not the water it contains. If you come across a river, you wouldn't call it "expired water" just because it's untreated and contains bacteria now, would you? xD

Canola oil is made from rapeseed oil, which is poisonous until it was genetically modified by the Canadians - which is why it is called Canola (Canada Oil). I switched to grapeseed oil, which is supposed to be much better and natural but nearly impossible to find in an organic variety.

You can report this video since there is spam in it

Doomsday Prepper opinion: Well, I need to qualify your spam statement. SPAM will lose it's flavor and texture if it gets too old....but you could still eat it. Another issue..... Spam (and similar products with a different brand name) with "pull tab tops" are far more likely to "go bad" than the old fashioned non pull tab tops.....you know the type where you need an old fashioned can opener. Pull top cans are far more likely to be "breached" over time.

You can actually buy that in bulk. I bought a bunch of baby Sox and put a couple teaspoons full in each, tied them off and sealed them with staple foods in big mylar bags that I vacuumed the air out of. Enough in each bag for a family of five for a month and store in my root cellar
It's called desiccant
