- This whole sequence gave me a headache
During week 3 of the 2024 NFL season, the Chicago Bears were trailing by five points with 2:01 left against the Indianapolis Colts with just one timeout. They decide to kick it off deep for some reason and give the Colts a chance to return it... only for them not to and not take advantage of the clock? Yeah, I got nothing

Yep....they can have a "in his prime" Joe Montana at QB....with this level of atrocious coaching....it ain't gonna matter for my Bears.....I've called him Matt Everlose for a few years....and he still earned that nickname....we got rid of Luke DoesntGetsy...but Waldren ain't better at all.... hasn't even earned his nickname yet...but I'm sure it will be another derogatory one.

Matt Eberflus coached his worst game, then he said hold my beer.
Shane tried to call a time out. Due to injuries Franklin was on the field during that kickoff. Franklin didn't know where to go as seen in videos of him running before the play. He was probably ensuring that Franklin knew what to do do there wasn't a flag on the play. Plus the returner is a rookie he makes mistakes so who knows what happened.
Correct. I watch the game and the kickoff team was nota read because of the injurd of Paye. A bet that Steichen said to Gould to return the kick. The TV commentators said he was not happy with the knee in the endzone. This was not a Dumb Decision. It was poor execution.
Let me provide a deep dive on the strategy to what you want to do
1. The bears want to attempt an onside kick. 1 first down loses the game so there’s no risk in it failing. Even if they kick a field goal, you’re still down by 8, which is still a 1 score game.
2. You want to make sure the colts KR doesn’t return the ball. Cairo Santos I will admit doesn’t have the leg to consistently kick it out of the back of the endzone but he can kick it out of bounds (whether in or out of the endzone). Ball at 40 isn’t a huge disadvantage here but that’s why the onside kick is the better option.
2B: it might be better to squib kick it since the ball is dead where it lands which will make sure the ball can’t be returned either if the kicker doesn’t have the leg to kick it.
3. Colts KR takes the knee for some reason
Now I'm even more glad that I fell asleep after halftime, because I don't think my heart 💔 could have handled watching this live.
I'm thinking that the reporters didn't give the kickoff situation much thought due to the Colts' offense getting the game-clinching first down. You have to keep in mind that something like that kickoff situation isn't gonna be obvious to the vast majority of people, including most beat writers, as it is to us. Many reporters aren't where we are.
Is this a first? Both teams get a DD on the same play?

When will you do a dumb decision on coach Reid? I think the pass in the fourth quarter with 2:40 left on 3rd and 2 was dumb and almost cost the chiefs the game.
Maybe the NFL agreed to have everyone mismanage the clock.
as a colts fan i wondered why this video was from the perspective of the bears. while watching that game every colts fan knew they had to return that ball. it worked out for us in the end, but still. if that is an example for how our coaching will act in the future, we will be suffering.

What does "short of the landing zone" mean?
Short of the 20. If the kick doesn’t reach the 20, it’s placed at the 40 and treated like a kickoff out of bounds

If this was 20 years ago it would have been a dumb decision not to try an onside kick, but under the modern rules you should kick it deep
The Bears draft Caleb Williams, the Bears hype train takes off, and like all Beard quarterbacks before, he's not that good.
On the same day of that game I was not far from it. I was at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for a IMSA 6 hour sports car race.

I have a lot of expirence playing ball thru college at EIU where Sean Payton was our QB, followed by 10 years of coaching where 5 players I recruited, they had no plans to ever play football and yet, all 5 went to NFL and one scored 2 TD's in the superbowl.

I had a feeling this game was going to be on here today. I thought initially you were going to cover the Bears timeout management in the 2nd half
I agree this was a dumb dumb play....but I thought the more egregious play you'd highlight was the one leading to WHY the Bears had only one timeout left....the absolutely maddening lack of decision making skills to not know whether to "go for two" after the TD....and having to waste a timeout because of the coaching confusion....only to call a grossly inadequate play AFTER the timeout. As a Bears fan...I was sick and tired of Luke Getsy....but Shane Waldren (coupled with Flues)....has me rethinking if it's just a Bears curse at this point to have incompetent coaching.

I would've tried an onside kick. I understand it's low probability but the 40 yard line vs the 45, 15 yards I think it's better to just try the onside since at least there's some chance of recovering it and having a golden opportunity to score a TD and steal a win. Or fail the onside and the Colts punt it, maybe it's a touchback and it's 80 yards, not too much different from they take possession at the 40 yard line and go 3 and out.

JG9, let's look at it from the intentionally kick it out of bounds argument. It's more complicated than 59 vs 13 ( those times are pure speculation on your part.) seconds. A kickoff out of bounds goes to the Colts 40 ( you conveniently leave this part out.). Well play, 2 minute warning, play, Bears last timeout, play, rundown the clock, punt. Bears punter Tory Taylor is averaging just over 45 yards a punt. This puts the Bears inside the 3
20 maybe closer depending on yardage gained. If Troy hits his average punt best case scenario Bears ball 59 seconds left (debatable) with no time outs. Worst case scenario ( Tory Taylor was drafted in the 4th round for a reason and he's an Australian punter) matches his game long of 54 yards. The Bears start around their own 5, with 59 ( again speculation ) seconds left, no timeouts, and Caleb Williams leading them. How well has Caleb played. This is way more complicated than your 59 vs 13 argument. ( Again speculation.)

I don't think the Bears kicking it away was a bad call. Yes kicking it out of the end zone would be better but Santos has never been the strongest leg. Not taking it out was certifiably dumb though.

Not that it was any smarter, but the Colts were so sure the Bears were going to onside kick that they sent the hands team out first. Then when they saw the Bears we're going to do a regular kick off because it was not announced that they were going to do the outside they had to quickly rush the regular return team out. This might be where they forgot to tell their receiver to not kneel when he caught it.

Santos max distance is 55 yards for field goals. 56 is too far for him but 🤷

The Chicago Bears have turned into the Chicago Cubs before 2016 championship. It’s gonna be 100+ years before the Bears win another Super Bowl championship since their last championship. Waited till next year. That’s gonna be their new slogan.
Since they won the SB for the 1985 season they're next championship will be in February of 2094 for the 2093 season, by that time I'll be pong gone since I was born 9 years after the 85 bears run.
