    one thing to point out, you can really see the PTSD coming out of Joel when he finally is safe in the settlement and has to "stop". you can see both Joel AND Ellie had their issues already popping up.
    like Joel getting those moments when he starts gasping for air ( what i think could be some sort of panick attack) and him seeing flashbacks of his daughter he lost YEARS ago. when Joel was walking through the town at night alone he was... constantly in his thoughts about his daughter. then when his walking up the stairs in the house very slowly... touching things as if his in a spaceship. as if scared. and when his opening up to his brother he explains he sees nightmares he cant even remember. the guilt the pain of the loss of losing his daughter. Joel most likely has not processed any of these since he was constantly on survival mode.
    and Ellie too, seeing how the other kids were living and comparing it to the life shes had. and finally realising just how messed up it all was for her compared to these kids who never saw struggle.
    Ellie unlike the other kids was never watching the movie in the theatre. she was constantly looking around reading people. nervous, jumpy. as if looking for threats. she or Joel cant relax like the others because their mind is a warzone.
    and when they both finally can stop for a moment, with no threats around to distract them they finally let out how they feel to each other at the room they meet in. they start to crack a little,. its great detail but i have seen this and experienced this myself. when you go through enough trauma its only when you finally STOP that your mental health issues wich your traumas caused you, start. wich is why on the road surrounded by constant threats Ellie and Joel were fine mentally per say, but here in the settlement we see a side of Joel we never saw before. we see him cry. its only when he was forced to stop and just BE, that we really see just how broken both Joel and Ellie are. we see this with war veterans as well for example, when they come home from war they can never get used to "normal" again. something we see with both Joel and Ellie. and when Joel was walking through the town, he was... constantly in his thoughts about his daughter. then when his walking up the stairs is when i noticed these people are not used to normal. and it will take them a LONG time to heal and maybe find a bit of peace inside their minds. i myself have all my childhood traumas torturing me now 12 years later. i almost killed myself last night i cant take it my head is so loud even though my surroundings are silent. i love this show and its realistic attention to realistic details. this episode made me cry so much

    This is the most vulnerable we’ve seen from both Joel and Ellie yet. We know watching from Joel the desperation to close himself off to preserve whatever humanity he doesn’t want to lose yet and him breaking down in front of Tommy is indicative of how much he’s barely keeping it together.
    Ellie, on the other hand, is a whole different kettle of fish. This is where her abandonment issues begin to boil over the more she loses her innocence; between being orphaned by her parents, being pawned off by Marlene, losing Riley, Tess, Henry and Sam, now she has to watch her father figure pawn her off and abandon her too? This girl can’t catch a damn break; it breaks my heart when she repeatedly tells him “Don’t leave me alone”.

    One thing the show does that I think is an improvement on the game is that it shows Joel as being much more flawed and vulnerable. Don't get me wrong he was certainly flawed in the game too but he was like a one man army sometimes (which works for the game). But here we see Joel having panic attacks, we see him going deaf and being slower, we see him struggling in fights more. He still a big threat to anyone he meets but it's done in a more realistic way here and I love it.
    Honestly this show so far has been a great example of making a great adaptation. It doesn't have to be EXACTLY the same as the game but the things it changes are largely I think improvements on what the game already did and I'm here for it. I think that's the key with any adaptation, if you are going to make a change, make sure the change is for the betterment of the story.

    Joel being afraid loops back to Bill's statement in Episode 3, that he was never afraid before he met Frank. This is Joel's moment. He loves Ellie. By the end Ellie is afraid too. What a great way to build toward that moment. What I feel like they're building toward is that the old Joel is still there, but he has something to dedicate it to now and god save anyone who gets in his way.

  • @Malysari
    @Malysari Год назад +10

    You have great insight about that. Joel locking those feelings away and refusing to process them. Ellie bringing those feelings to. That’s why therapy is so important. Unfortunately, that’s not really a choice in the apocalypse.
    Anyways, another great episode. I totally thought that was Dina too. Really looking forward to the next few episodes. The second game is definitely worth finishing. It’s complex.

    • @Dark__Thoughts
      @Dark__Thoughts Год назад +2

      Well, professional therapy isn't. But I saw some parallels here with Joel having nothing but nightmares about Sarah, and at the end then actually seeing her in a good moment. People who played through Part 2 will know both examples that I'm talking about here that are relevant to this and how it relates to processing their traumas.
      I think especially Jackson is the type of community where it is possible, some certain people and their bigot sandwiches aside.

    The TV shows definitely gives you more depth in reality of what you're watching compared to the game version because of the actors and actresses they did they're doing a phenomenal job of bringing these characters to life same for the writers and giving us parts of the game and then giving us new stuff that we didn't see in the game and changing it up for people that never played the game that only want to watch a TV show version of it but still combining game and TV show

    Graham Greene (Marlon) and Elaine Miles (Florence) [the couple in the cabin that Ellie stole one of the rabbits from] Are always a pleasure to see.
    Joel, the character id 56, the actor is late 40s. Tommy is Joel's younger brother, presumably a few years younger. So Tommy could legitimately be in his 40s, if there's a large age gap, like myself and my baby sister, Well, she was born almost a full 14 years after me, my brother was born 2 1/2 years before me
    As someone familiar with both the games and the DLC, I choose only to reference points in the game that have already passed in the current or prior episodes of the show.

    • @acevfx2923
      @acevfx2923 Год назад

      No Tommy is the one with a military background.
      The term contractors can imply a wide variety of things. In the military scene it can be anything from mercenaries to the ammunitions manufacturers, all the way down to the mundane things such as pillows, bed frames and the bars of soap you shouldn't drop in the showers. Everything is supplied by 'contractors'.
      In the civilian world it's very much the same. Joel was in construction. You have a hole in your roof? Well, go find a guy, sign his Contract and he'll fix it up. That's why they're called contractors, plural, because they function on 'per-job' contracts, instead of one single contract like you would have if you were to work a regular 9 till 5.
      But you probably already knew this 👍

    Joel told Ellie in the truck Tommy joined the Army right out of highschool and a few months later they shipped him to desert storm wich was from August 1990 to February 1991 you normally graduate maybe very beginning of June so him being shipped off would have been in 1990 and he would have been 18. Joel was 36 in 2003 minus 13 he would have been 23 in 1990 so he should be about 5 years older than Tommy according to what Joel said

    This episode brought me to tears a lot. I always cry whenever I see people deal with anxiety, or be vulnerable. The one dislike I had (if you can call it that because I still enjoyed it) was the conversation where Joel did open up to Tommy.
    In the game, Joel isn't as vulnerable, but kind of hints toward it. It's when Tommy sees Joel with Ellie that he knows why he's asking. Because Tommy knew that Joel was growing attached to Ellie, and couldn't stand to lose her like he did Sarah.
    I cried during the talking scene, and I enjoyed it, but I think the game did that moment better. I liked that Tommy realized why Joel was asking without him having to say it.

    Pretty much the whole of Jackson is an Easter Egg for the second game, they did a fantastic job of recreating it, not quite perfectly but in a little bit of an earlier stage than it is in the second game. I was kinda sad to not see Gustavo sitting on his rocking chair with Buckley by his feet, though.
    And can we just talk about the [sorta maybe kinda almost spoilery] bit where Ellie says to Joel "You know you could have just made something up. I would've believed you."? JFC the foreshadowing is strong with this episode!

      I appreciate how the show gives more emphasis on Joel’s age, in the game dude is old but is still a beast running around everywhere and punching people so hard that they die, which is very cool on a game, but live action would feel very unrealistic.

    The confession scene between Joel and Ellie was perfect in the game, so it is almost impossible to surpass, but they did it great though, just that the original was god tier in that scene.

    Very strong episode.
    Awesome seeing Tommy and Maria in live-action. If idiots have a problem with Maria being race-swapped, screw off. Also, I believe I saw Dina from Last of Us 2 in the dining hall. If you don't know who Dina is, look her up, since she's an important character.
    I also loved seeing the live-action version of the famous argument scene between Joel and Ellie ("You have no idea what loss is"). It was just as beautiful and sad as it is from the game.
    Also, Joel's breakdown over failing to save Sarah was heartbreaking. I know hardcore fans will cry foul at that, because "that's not Joel is about". If you truly understood Joel, you would love that aspect of the character even more. I bet you Pedro Pascal wins an Emmy for his acting here.
    Also also, if you truly know Last of Us, Joel ain't dead. I promise you.
    I'm excited for the live-action Left Behind DLC next week, especially finally seeing Riley. I also hope to see Ashley Johnson, aka the original Ellie, appear in the episode.
    Again, I love this damn show!

    Joel's fears of failure drives alot of Joel's more extreme choices later on. (SPOILER for end of the first game). when Tommy tells joel he is having a kid and the whole exchange between them in the bar shows us that the choice joel makes FOR ellie at the end of the game was very selfish one.. joel convinced himself he could be happy now that he has a "purpose" in ellie, and letting her sacrifice herself will completely rob him of the one thing he thought he had found again. Joel NEEDS ellie to need him, he NEEDS to succeed in "protecting" her and letting her sacrifice herself means he has failed "her" yet another time, just like he knew he would (in his mtind). the fate of mankind is NOTHING next to the failure of not being able to "protect" her, to keep her alive, it would reinforce all his fears and failures and he couldn't accept that, he would rather doom mankind than face that failure again! it wasn't a noble gesture, sure yah, it may have been out of love, but even hoel knows that he saved ellie for JOEL! joel didn't save ellie because he thought it was the right thing, he saves her because he NEEDED her to live for the sake of his own sanity and sense of purpose.. why do u think he lies to ellie about what happened at the hospital for so long?? joel knew ellie would HATE HIM for robbing her sense of purpose just to save his own! ppl who played the game can probably recall what she tells him eventually right? I won't go into it since it's something she tells him in the 2nd game, but ellie WANTED die with a sense of purpose, she wanted to give her life to save others! Joel knows that! that's why he LIES to her about what went down at the end of the 1st game. I'm not saying if joel was right or wrong (it depends if it's on a technical or moral level), what I am saying is that there was nothing Nobel or heroic about the choice he makes for ellie at the end.
