I am a seventy-six year old retired toolmaker, who has lived and helped on our family farm, since I was able. There was always at least one dog on the farm. After I married, we had several different breeds of sporting dogs. Every one of them was as different as the people around them. This dog Cricket appears to be a Vizsla, which is a high energy breed. A consistent, caring, but firm hand from before the pup is weaned, is needed to create a bond between the human and animal, as well as trust that the animal can begin any training that is needed.
The training and any corrections that are necessary, need to be done in way that the dog, or any other animal can understand. A dog does not scream at another dog, nor do they hit or kick each other, in their world. Stating openly that you hate an animal shows a lot about the person attempting to train that animal.
Ms. Noem stated that she had been around dogs for her complete life. I wonder about her upbringing, and how the other hunting dogs were treated. Once you state that you hate a young dog, you have also stated that you do not understand that animal. If the dog had gotten into my chickens, I would have taken the dog to train, before I would have it meet a pointless death. Likely Ms. Noem was afraid of the dog, and continued trying to train the animal in heavy handed manners, when she should have turned the dog over to a qualified trainer, with a good reputation for making good dogs. And then to brag about an unfortunate event, for some odd reason.
Makes me wonder how she was ever capable of getting elected as governor if she's not capable of realizing she needs a dog trainer with more skill than she possesses.
My guess is that other people trained the dogs and she grew up thinking she knows more than she does. The dog escaping and killing a bunch of chickens indicates she didn’t pay attention to it.

What she leaves out recently, is that she killed the dog in an area close enough to the road to be seen by a road work crew AND the school bus arriving. Her daughter got off the bus and looking around asked " Where's Cricket". it seems the dog was actually the family pet.
