It was! The statement also implies that Sean was Scottish and Roberts mom’s name from that episode was Moira, a Scottish name! He is very likely from the same family.
So this is my first time listening to this podcast and I think that One… There’s something strange about the Lucas family. They seem shady. Two I think that the reason the job was so over paid was because the crew or captain had to choose which crew member to kill at the end. Three I think Sean was on board last time that’s why he was so scared. He knew what could potentially happen if the crew and or captain chose him to kill instead of the other person. 4 the end, after all the money comes in, the woman is nearly tempted to go back. If she had, I’d wager that she would end up just like Sean.
Also, why is the Lucas family funding the magnus Instituted? It seems like they are trying to hide something and using money as a means to prevent further investigations. John definitely needs to look into that.
This is one of the episodes thats actually more ominous the second time i listen to the podcast. Like, that guy is NOT having a good time alone on that boat!
Just found this amazing series and it's my first time going through it, but I had a thought about the recordings. Jon Sims states repeatedly that he has to use the tape recorder to document stubborn cases that refuse to be made digital, but despite all the weirdness he keeps an extreme skepticism about every case. What if he digitally copies all the fake cases but only the truely supernatural ones have to be voice recorded. So we hear only the true cases while Jon sees and types thousands of fake cases all the time?
this is 6 months later so I assume you know but extremely minor spoilers ig?? yeah!!! i believe Jonny confirmed this in one of the Q&As where he said that yes, all the statements on podcast are true occurances (though that doesn't mean the statement givers always have to be entirely truthful Abt it, like in the lost John's cave episode)
Everybody left the ship, a weird whistle summoned mysterious fog, 'it wasn't an easy choice', fake shipping containers, a body washing up a year later seeming as though it had only been at sea for 5 days? Sound pretty much like a sacrifice of some sort, and definitely at least a little paranormal.
But how was he missing for 6 months and only in the water 5 days? They took the only lifeboat and he disappeared on the ship in the middle of the ocean
Ah the Lukas family. Responsible for or at least implicated in strange occurrences and jet funding an organisation that tries to uncover and investigate what's happening. I'm calling it now, they use the institute to gather knowledge they need to further their machinations
Do you think that if she hadn't already been out, she would have been the one left behind instead of the other guy?? Bc the only reason she was with the others was because she was investigating the crates
It was her job to be out there at that time, it's the reason she risked it. I doubt they would have gone looking for her, but definitely planned to collect her on the way.
The other guy looked scared though, so I think he at least had reason to suspect he'd be the victim. Maybe the crew votes who will be next and he was generally disliked?
I'm revisiting this episode while in the midst of Season 4, so that I can get a refresher on who Peter Lukas is, and the first part of the episode was so surprising to listen to. Tim sounds so cheerful. :(
Peter Lukas? As in the Lukas family with the fog? I want to say it's scary they sacrificed Sean to the fog. The idea there's a chance you will be picked is scary.
I sat in the boat while my dad and his friend’s scuba dived once. All alone in the boat, nothing on the horizon but water meeting sky. It was cold, but not too choppy, there was no cry of birds, just the slap of the waves against the side of the boat. Out in the distance I noticed something strange. I narrowed my eyes and saw a fin. A very distinctive fin. It belonged to a killer whale, lazily moving away from us towards the horizon. I froze, the awareness of how small and frail the boat was, how thin the protection it offered held me in place. I thought of the others - defenceless under the waves. Time felt like it stopped, holding its breath to see if the deadly creature would change its course. Then up they bubbled - the divers - and they laughed and scrambled aboard. I said nothing, afraid they would not believe me. But I threw up in some ones discarded shoe on the way back in.
It's my first go but as I see it he is scared of them threatening the finances of the institute, you don't bite the hands that feed you without getting punched.

I don't think its only the new blood that's at risk given how they all acted
Wow, the Magnus Archives is actually an office comedy.
He talkes about this later in the season
does Timothy Stoker know I'd die for him
god relistening to this is so painful
how come?
@@cezar3169 this podcast is a tragedy
@@humanname99 makes sense
I don't want to admit how long it took be to see that the bit at the start is a very nice in character comment response
if it makes you feel any better I didn't even think about it until I saw the comments XD
lukas?? isn't that the same last name as that girl's s/o from "alone" ?
Yes it is! Well spotted! The Lucas name pops up here and there throughout the series. Keep an ear out for it. 😉
@@TheNitpickChick what is that wink for?
Also are they the ones funding the Institute?
@@RainbowUnicorn2005 They are... a funder for the institute
I don't even think anything paranormal happened here, i think they just straight up killed that dude
The reasons to kill someone can be paranormal
the problem is that there was no one else left on the ship? tbh it sounds like he was used as a sacrifice for something
Mysterious fog, strange whistle, overpaid job, weird ship. Strange enough for the Magnus institute I think.
That... makes a lot of sense
Do you think that if she hadn't already been out, she would have been the one left behind instead of the other guy?? Bc the only reason she was with the others was because she was investigating the crates
They said it was a hard choice, so I don’t think it’s randomic
It was her job to be out there at that time, it's the reason she risked it. I doubt they would have gone looking for her, but definitely planned to collect her on the way.
They made their choice, it was not her time
The other guy looked scared though, so I think he at least had reason to suspect he'd be the victim. Maybe the crew votes who will be next and he was generally disliked?
i loved the bit at the start :D!
I'm revisiting this episode while in the midst of Season 4, so that I can get a refresher on who Peter Lukas is, and the first part of the episode was so surprising to listen to. Tim sounds so cheerful. :(
Rewatching it too after finishing last year.. I miss happy tim.
Peter Lukas? As in the Lukas family with the fog?
I want to say it's scary they sacrificed Sean to the fog. The idea there's a chance you will be picked is scary.
Ah! I knew that last name sounded so familiar but couldn't remember where I heard it. Thank you so much for this!

@@alessiapalma8823 No spoilers here. They’re implying the adjective form of the word remote referring to something that’s far away or isolated.
Yikes 😳

Readed this in jhons vlice and the last part made me laugh
why is elias so touchy about the lucas family? is he afraid that jon will find out too much too soon?
It's my first go but as I see it he is scared of them threatening the finances of the institute, you don't bite the hands that feed you without getting punched.
This one was my favorite so far. Very Lovecraftian, which is my favorite type of horror. Been binge listening for 2 days now and just love this series 💜
Glad you enjoy it!

1st relisten after the finale here. Doesnt jon say later (season 3 or 4)that he doesnt like rereading statements because they taste stale or something like that? Because the beholding already knows that story. I vaguely remember that, and his reluctance to rerecord the mistake ones in the beginning of this episode could be the first signs of his eye powers/weird "eating" habits forming
I have decided Tim is the light of my life and I need to hear him talk to Martin and Sasha about worms immediately

“That and my bad Spanish” Homegirl speaking Spanish in Brazil 💀💀
SPOILER FOR THE EPISODE:
I feel like shawn was a sacrifice of some sort? he knew his fate so he was fearful and the others didnt wish to bring it up and only dared to have fun after shawn "disappears" as their worries were gone
i think it could have been anyone? Like whatever that took him chose and they didnt know who so they didn’t get close to anyone until the person was chosen?
@@assiv4k it could also be that.
shawn's expression was specifically called out as being more fearful than that of the others so thats why i thought that
The fact they tried speaking to Brazilians in spanish had me rollin dude 😂
Spoiler ::
Is the reason John doesn’t want to re-record the statements beacuse the eye has already gotten his fear and doesn’t want him to go over them again (and the spider doesn’t want him to go backwards)
Oooh, good idea
Damn, never thought about that before
I don't know if it matters enough for you to edit your comment, but the vagueness of "Spoiler" implied (at least to me) that the comment would be spoilers for this episode and not for the future of the series.
I stopped reading as soon as I realised that it went beyond this episode, but maybe "Future spoilers" would be a more apt tag 😄

Okay I'm a new listener, but for some reason the Lucas Family is extreamly off-putting to me- Like I feel they're somehow connected to the whole cult-supernatural thing and Elias knows this, wich is why he wants John to keep quiet abt what he reads. There's DEFINITELY something very wrong with Elias and the Lucas Family and it scares me-

Carlita says she had a problem communicating as she didn't speak Spanish, but Brazil speaks Portuguese. Just a minor nitpick, as it's not necessarily an error in the story but one made by the character.
Fernando Giubilei that’s probably why she had a hard time communicating, she thought people spoke Spanish in Brazil

I started listening to this series a few days ago because I remembered that apparently it was good, and i'm very much enjoying it! Though, every time Jon says "statement" my mind jumps to Fesh Pince 2 where Uncle Phil's opening statement is "statement"
Unfortunate for me that the one episode that, ironically, really got under my skin, "Squirm", turned out to be the main throughline of this season so far, but my curiosity thankfully outweighs it
