Its like they were told this would be the last medical drama ever produced and they wanted to get all their ideas out there
'The fact that he's gay is the most normal thing about him'
I approve!
This sounds like the producers sat the writers down and challenged them to see just how many tropes they could fit into the show.
I agree. It almost sounds like a parody of the entire genre.
Pointing out the flaws and absurdities from within while keeping a straight face.
Damn, I think my wife would've really loved this for all the reasons you laid out.
Rest in peace, Sammy.
Sorry dude, it must be tough to talk about it
@@MrGreen-mt9fx It's okay. I think she was the one who put me onto this channel. Certainly at least indirectly, since I'd never seen Star Trek until we watched Voyager together over the last few months.
Thank you for trying to distract me from my anxiety
I'm calling it now (having not seen it and having no legal ability to see it in my region), the mystery patient is his father, who he doesn't recognise because he has face blindness. This show sounds so bad it's good.
Damn! That's good. Yeah, that sounds about right.
This was my first thought. And after the rollercoaster that is this video, Id be shocked for it to be any other way. Unless the John Doe is just too young to maybe be his father.
That's genuinely a good twist, I hope you're right
But his mum would recognize him, wouldn’t she?
@frodobrommelkamp9119 Ooh good point, this makes me think of another frankly better twist that flashed through my mind. John Doe killed his dad or witnessed the potential murder, or otherwise has some kinda dad info
I haven't watched, but I can say without reservation that Dr. Oliver Sacks, the neurology professor and physician on whom the main character was based, is fascinating, and a great basis for a show. Sacks' parents were both doctors, he did have a difficult childhood and some hardship, and he worked in the Bronx. The thing that interests me is their handling of his patients, all of whom had interesting neurological disorders. His empathic case stories, and the level of detail he collected, led to his ability to understand, ameliorate, and sometimes cure, his patients. He was the doctor Robin Williams played in Awakenings. For those who enjoy interesting reads, he has written many books about his patients conditions, including An Anthropologist on Mars, which includes autism, and The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat. If the show is even 20% as interesting as Sacks and his patients, I can't wait!
I've not yet read An Anthropologist on Mars, but The Man Who Mistook his Wife for a Hat is extraordinary.
I love Dr. Sacks’ books! He makes understanding neuroplasticity easy for the average dolt (like me).
Mr. Shives, thank you for a hilarious and intriguing overview of the show. I purchased the season sight unseen. Keep up the fantastic work in all the realms you cover.
Most unrealistic part is that a hospital would take care of a John Doe in a vegetative state without insurance info
Thank You!! When I read the video title I knew exactly what show you were going to talk about. One character you forgot is the friend/coworker that is having marital problems. The whole show is crazy.
Based on the details provided, I really can't imagine how they could possibly find room to make "the main character is gay" a focal point. It would be a little too much like "the climate is spiraling out of control, the world's most powerful nation might turn to fascism, there's a homeless epidemic and housing crisis, and I can't find my car keys."
Have you checked down the back of your couch? You might find the answer to any of those issues down there.
I saw bits of this show passively and I think this guy is possibly also on the spectrum as well. It's not so in your face as other aspects but I can see it still being a total thing. I'm not a follower but I got that much from what little I have seen.
My pitch: one of the character's backstory is that they grew up on their parents' Jurassic park. It just turns out that in this reality, that's just a regular thing. People figured out how to actually do a "Jurassic Park" style attraction safely. So this world just has dinosaur parks. One episode where they go to a dinosaur park, and the whole episode the audience is expecting a disaster like the fictional Jurassic Park, with everything going off the rails. Nope, nothing goes wrong. They've actually figured out how to do it safely, and it's just like visiting a zoo. This appears in one episode and is NEVER addressed again.
I would watch the hell out of any series that did what you just laid out.
So Season 2 gets a West World episode, Season 3 Andromeda Strain... Or as suggested it's just more "Extra" to hook people... And realistically probably helpful to "greenlight" a Season 2 with built in options for the network to "retool" the show...
The "Normal" Doctor is secretly a Mutant (X-Men variety) with as yet undisclosed power(s)...
Alright I’m sold. If my man Steve is digging it this much I gotta give it a try. Sounds messy as hell in the best way! 😂
I wasn't interested in another medical drama, but I'll watch for the bonkers.
You know what y'all SHOULD be watching? Snout Cedar's Certified! Look it up
I second that.
Thank you! I share your latter sentiment and this was precisely that.
Thank you so much.
_Welcome to Monk E.R._
As a nurse, I cannot watch medical dramas. I’m constantly nitpicking the inaccuracies. This show sounds like it would make my brain melt.
If you like this, then you’ll love the Robin Williams film Awakenings, also based on the brilliant Oliver Sacks.
The book was incredibly interesting and engaging (like all of Dr. Sacks's work), while the movie was just unhinged enough, *AND* it had Robin Williams. Double win!
Loved that movie!
I'm definitely recommending this to my neurologist the next time I see her! She needs some laughs in her life, I think.
I imagine she's already an Oliver Sacks fan!
I'm glad you watched this for me. Now I can sit down with it.
I half-expected a Retro Review on the DS9 episode Statistical Probabilities after just watching it last night
I forgot this was going to be a show. I have touch synesthesia. I had no Idea it was a thing until I found out about a doctor who had it and wrote a book called Mirror Touch. I didn't know other people had it. Thanks, gotta catch up. 🙂 Edit: isn't this also based on the Doctor Robin Williams played in Awakenings?
Oh I love the more people are getting into the show or at least getting interested in it. lol It‘s pretty good (if a tad cheesy) and nice to see empathy, humanity and respect in a medical drama. The cases are actually based on cases from Oliver Sacks‘ books and other real life cases (Oliver Wolf is based on Oliver Sacks)
Yes! The empathy of the characters is a big part of what hooked me!
House was a powerful show that me & my wife binged from start to finish. Hugh Laurie deserves accolades for his portrayal of Dr. House, not the least of which is his impeccable American accent giving no hint that he's an English actor.
I’m rewatching House for about the tenth time and am amazed that, while it gets more and more offensive and out of touch in some of its details and characterizations it’s still worth it. Still genius, still relevant, still funny and heartrending.
I've seen the first two episodes, and honestly they got me with the pilot opening sequence, because while less dramatic, the last time I saw my grandmother was very much like that where the sun came out for her for a minute and she remembered me for the first time in a long time. I'm not ashamed that I wept openly during that, and I'm getting a little misty-eyed thinking about it recollecting it now.
I loved it, partly because it IS bonkers, but great talents can make the most ludicrous stories gripping and entertaining.
Sounds crazy yet more normal then real life.
Quinto is an AMAZING actor. I legitimately hated him (his character) during the first two seasons of Heroes. I admittedly never got around to watching the rest of the series, but his portrayal of his character made me hate him so much because he did such a good job.
Jake Gyllenhaal did the same in Nighcrawler and Anna Gunn did it in Breaking Bad.
It's not common that a performer can elicit actual HATE that lingers from me for their character, but when it happens, they are AMAZING at their job.
He was absolutely the best part of Heroes. Part of that show's problem was that they couldn't bear to let him go even though his character arc resolved quite early on, so had to jump through increasingly ridiculous narrative hoops to keep him around. He was also a great Spock - I'm not a huge fan of those movies, but that's not because of the cast, who were uniformly excellent.
Sylar is a favorite in our household. We don't really hate him the same way, but we agree Quinto did a fantastic job. Just, uh...maybe don't go back and finish the series. It never truly recovered after the writer's strike towards the end of season 1.
As for actors that sold their characters? Imelda Staunton. Everyone can agree Voldemort was evil, but almost anyone will tell you that they hate Umbridge FAR more than they hate him. And she sold the movie version to an insane degree. To the point where watching her be a sweetheart in interviews is a bit disorienting :P
I loved Sylar, well, I loved to hate him. That role landed Quinto as one of my favorite actors from then on. Another two actors who have proven very able to be absolutely hated is Rosamund Pike(The wife Gone Girl and main character in I Care A Lot) and Jeff Gleeson(Joffrey Baratheon).
Such absolutely visceral disgust with their characters is a hallmark of great acting chops.
I really like the character Sylar. He was my Hero.
That show sounds intriguing; thanks for the recommendation! And for the break from all things political. 💙
The US version of the show Ghosts is this for me. I've loved Rose McIver since iZombie and the whole cast is really damned funny. The premise is absolutely nutty - Rose's character has an accident and now she can see the ghosts that live in an old mansion that was handed down to her. I've not seen the original UK version and I've been told it's just as nutty.
Ghosts is one of the remakes where the US version is better
Sounds like you might enjoy _What We Do in the Shadows._ If you don't already, that is. If you're not familiar with it, watch the movie before the series.
@AlbertaGeek that show is great.
We need a Star Trek Medical show :D
"Is it space sickness or a transporter accident this week?"
@@atticstatticor an alien disease, or a “hallucination” that turns out to be some alien that only some people/races can see …
Needed this break. Thanks Steve!
Hey Steve, have you seen 'Prodigal Son' with Michael Sheen in a weird way this reminds me of it. You might like it. It looks like the facility Michael Sheen is held at is the same as the Hospital in this too.
Prodigal Son was freaking amazing. So sorry to have lost that one.
@queenannsrevenge100 I go into everything now knowing it will end too soon, but that show was blast and should not have ended there.
Oh, wait, even better crossover idea, as a child the protagonist used to sit and stare at a snow globe and imagine a hospital.
St elsewhere! Its probably already in tommy Westphall's head!
Taking mystery drugs instead of having a lab analyze them is a bold move. As much as I doubt that an MD would do such a thing, a doc on PCP sounds entertaining.
Thank you for this fun distraction!
This sounds absolutely incredible
I'm a sucker for medical dramas and I love this one! I already liked it but when they figured out that the patient had Locked In Syndrome and he wasn't just a 1 episode story, I was hooked! I've watched documentaries on it. It's fascinating, especially watching people with it at the gym slowly regaining some strength.
Thank you for clarifying the condition. When he tried to avoid the spoiler I immediately went “what could it be aside from locked in syndrome?” but I also was too lazy to google it.
I hope they decide to do a crossover episode and bring in Jeffrey Combs' character from From Beyond to eat brains and rant about unseen monsters.
Thank you, Steve.
Oh Hell Steve, who needs any crazy docs out on the airwaves? Sounds like our politics right now.
If I was running the show, the one normal character would be the narrator. Her commentary about the extreme situation would be the comedic glue holding the show together.
This would be really interesting, especially if they introduced mild "unreliable narrator" moments so that it throws doubt on the behaviors of these extreme people. Then as a viewer you'd would never know if what you are watching is valid or just the perception of a "normal" person who may or may not be actually "normal".
Have you seen Garth Marenghi's Darkplace? This reminds me of that.
I recently found out there are Garth Marenghi audiobooks and... yep, they are exactly what you'd expect.
That sounds insane enough to be a late night show on Cartoon Network.
Childrens Hospital reboot?
Have you seen the show "Salvation"? A totally different concept, but as its plot developed, it unfolded into a mystery, wrapped inside an enigma, swaddled in a conundrum, embedded in a puzzle, shrouded in an illusion, cloaked in a dilemma, obscured by a paradox, enveloped in a cypher, surrounded by a quandary, swallowed by an, um, er--
I suspect the writer's room must have breathed a collective sigh of relief when the show was cancelled, saving them from figuring out how to add more layers to the onion.
I preferred the show, "Salivation"; it was a lot more straight forward, though it was covered in drool. 🤤
Salvation was brilliant and had the super talented Captain Rios in it, that's where I first saw him
Okay I definitely need to watch this; as someone with faceblindness and (minor) mirror-touch synaesthesia, I gotta see just how badly they mess up the details.
"Dr. Oliver Wolf" is a reference to Dr. Oliver Sacks.
Sounds like there's a bit of a House reference there too. If Dr. Gregory House was intended to be the medical equivalent of Sherlock Holmes, then Dr. Oliver Wolf might be a medical cross between Oliver Sacks and the fictional Nero Wolfe, from Rex Stout's excellent mystery novels. Stout couldn't quite equal the great British mystery writers, imo, (meaning Conan-Doyle, Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sayers, or PD James), but his books are still well worth reading!
Thank you for the recommendation. I am going to watch it.
I have barely started watching but I ABSOLUTELY needed this!!
no im sweating the election and binging your old star trek content. i cant cope with reality right now.
Me too.
Thank you for the suggestion to watch some great bad TV right now. It's really nice to unwind with something that is just a comfort and totally bonkers. I've got Person of Interest on and Burn Notice is next. Take it easy!
Amen to your ending statement! It's gonna be a looonnnggg next few days/weeks.
Thanks Steve, I really needed this
Based on one of your previous shows, I am rewatching X-Files. Thanks for reminding of my favorite childhood show, it has helped so much!
Anxiety IS high... no 2016 again please, argh.
Appreciate the attempt at a neutral distraction 👍
I went to the weed dispensary today in my hometown in Arizona. I bought an ounce of White Rhino(RINO) out of respect for those on the other side, putting country ahead of party and voting to save our Republic. I voted weeks ago. I'll resurface on Friday to see if I have to make a break for the border to claim political asylum.
My lil sister is in this! Great cast ( I may be biased 🤣) I’m glad you are liking it. Hope it runs for a few seasons and they don’t kill her 🤣.
I am not. Watching that.
Oooh, thanks for the reminder to catch up on Lower Decks!
And also, Picard's French last name with an English accent when he speaks is related to his baldness mishap...
"One of the interns is a regular person? We can't have that! Make her a leprechaun!!"
sounds like they're going to have to add either time travel or ghosts to keep it going in season 2
Me and wife are literally howling laughing as you go down the show gimmicks. Like, tears in our eyes laughing at such ridiculousness. WTF happened to network tv that is absurd
Dr Kinney will turn out to collect souvenirs from weekend “activities”, stashing them behind a false panel in the laundry room.
Thanks, Steve! I may give it a go. I don’t have Paramount, but I have a partner who does, so now we might have something else to try when we aren’t watching Lower Decks. :)
Thank you. It’s 7:46 pm PST. I’m avoiding election coverage.
I feel like there was a show that had a similar premise before. I think it was called Black Box? Had the actress who plays Beth in Yellowstone as the lead?
I am SO VERY MUCH hoping this show goes the way of St. Elsewhere...
Is that too much to ask?
Is that the one where it was all in a boys imagination from looking at a snow globe?
@@ActuallyDoubleGuitars Yeah, and the producers took the cat mascot with them during the end credits.
Oh. Im definitely watching that. I just added it to my list.
Have you watched Mrs. Davis yet? THAT was definitely a trip and a half. Highly recommend 👍
No bonkers medical drama will ever top Blackjack. Does Dr Wolfe ever treat a telepathic fetus in fetu? Didn't think so.
Still gonna watch it for the thicc Asian(?) nurse, tho.
I would watch the heck out of that. $
I needed this!
Thank you, I needed a distraction.
Kudos to you for getting to six. I tapped out after the first episode. Same with high intellectual potential.
Was bringing about starting this one once im finished w my current obsession, A TOUCH OF FROST.
Sounds nearly as bonkers as a reality I currently inhabit. I'll have to give it a look.
I love bonkers!!! Sometimes you gotta watch crazy TV!!!
Oh hey, it's the hot guy from Heroes
He's gone full Sylar with every drama shows protagonist power 😂
Thank you
utter madness ; i'd watch every second.
I remember plate spinning from variety shows when I was a kid. Riveting.
His How Snus?
I will call it now. Long lost Daddy will be a mysterious patiënt in the final episode.
The show sounds -- as of 6:30 into this video -- like it was based on the novel Oliver Sacks (of _The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat_ fame) never wrote (but could have written).
So far, this sounds like House married Twin Peaks. I will definitely check it out.
This show's commercials look awful. Your description makes it sound awful. BUT, your enthusiasm speaks to me. I will check it out.
I have Peacock but I seldom watch any of their original shows.I got it because they have the sports I like to watch. I tried a couple shows and they were ok but nothing I'd watch a second season of. I may have to give this one a shot after your review.
Zachary Quinto was ruined for me when I heard he was so mean to a restaurant hostess that she broke down in tears.
Same
Aww man wtf, damn that’s a bummer to hear
Yeah, and he was so awful they banned him from the restaurant and released a public statement about what happened so as to tell their side of the story. It's all out there. Don't take my word for it, of course. Not a Zachary fan any more here. Can't tolerate successful people who abuse working class folks.
You know I'm gonna watch it now
No! Don't let Sylar into a hospital! We know how he "comes to understand" people!
This is really sweet.
Love that show! ❤
Here’s the twist-the hospital is really a psychiatric facility and the rest of the characters are talented doctors who suffered psychiatric breakdowns. Except for the normal one.
She’s a normal doctor who is bringing in actors to perform as the medical patients in actual cases to get the brilliant, broken minds to help her solve her unsolvable medical cases.
I have no idea about the show whatsoever, but based off your description, this would be the most off-the-wall place to take this mess.
Thank you Steve. I’m going to need a lot more distraction… for oh, say, about 4 more years or so…
The Hospital itself reminds me of Saint Elsewhere.
OOh... this is based on the life of the late Oliver Sacks. He talked about taking drugs, and he was gay, so... it kinda sounds like at least some of the stuff about "Wolf", at least, is based on some aspects of the guy's real life.
Fun Fact: Oliver Sacks was also portrayed in the movie "Awakenings" (as "Dr. Malcolm Sayer"), where he was played by Robin Williams.
It always annoys me when writers want an episode where the main character is on drugs or something, they make an otherwise rational character just randomly consume drugs/something drugged. It happened in The Mentalist as well.
Thanks for the attempted distraction, but imma put this on the back burner until we find out whether the real world will continue to exist beyond Jan 20, 2025 if you don't mind.
Steve, who loves pro-wrestling, enjoys a doctor show that is massively overblown 😄👍
