As a Gen Z, I got so excited when you talked about a no-pressure project. But as soon as you said "no posing about it, no sharing, not showing it to anybody" I noticed my excitement immediately died... I didn't realize I actually struggle so much to just do something creative for it's own sake. Everything has to be a performance or side hustle and it's exhausting. Very eye-opening video, and I will definitely be reading this book!
Thank you for your comment! I totally get you, it is indeed exhausting. But unfortunately we need to face it to make it better, step by step. I'm glad the video resonated with you.
Thanks for taking the time to share your findings and perspective on the creative process. I'm glad to have found your channel, as creativity is something I always thought came naturally, but recently I've been horrified to find that after years of focusing down on workworkwork, I am coming up empty when it comes time to actually make something for myself. Keep on creating! It's a gift, and can be lost!
Thank you for your comment! TOTALLY understand you there about the focus on work, it happened to me as well. But hey, there's still time to make a change! Let's all of us not give up on creating for ourselves 🙏 I'm glad the video resonated with you.
I might be lying to myself, but I don't feel like I could ever do something just for the fun of it without at least trying to monetize it in any way. Or better said, to ever do something that isn't created with the idea of monetizing it after. I don't feel like we live in a world that allows for such frolicking anymore as everything is getting more expensive by the minute, the threat of poverty is getting overwhelmingly pressing and there is just no time to lose to save ones skin. This part of the book seems to me like it was written from the perspective of a person that doesn't have to fear homelessness and an empty dinner table. I do think that these two things (creativity and monetization) can coexist, but I do agree that the creation should still get the main effort and attention. Great video by the way. The comment is more directed at the book :)
Totally get what you are saying. I struggle with that every single day to be honest, lol. Grew up very poor and even though I'm financially good now, there's always that voice telling me to go harder. Make more (money). I try my best to keep at least one or two hobbies just for fun but to your point, they're definitely not the main focus because we still have to get that bread I guess. Thank you for your comment, love to have these types of convos in my videos!
@@thejaymoraes Come to think of it: I do have hobbies I don't directly monetize (music, sports) and that are just there for me to stay healthy and grounded and have some fun in life. BUT, those are not the ones needing creativity, which is always used for things related to work. And even though I don't directly monetize music and sports I still sometimes record progress there and post it publicly to raise interest in me as a person and consequently in my work. Man, careers these days have become so damn complicated ^^'
i had to do a double take at the views/sub count, bro. the quality is outstanding and you’re very engaging. you’re doing good work, keep it up! subbing now, you’re definitely gonna go far 🙌❤
Thank you for your comment! I get what you mean. But as creativity is something so abstract and somewhat individual to each of us, is hard to try to get instructions from these kinds of books. To some people it can seem introductory - maybe because people were expecting a guide to follow. This one to me at least, was more about the mindset of it all.
If a person wants to develop their creativity, shoudn't they keep away from books and topics related to the topic? After all they are reading a medium of the understandings of creativity of another person. And creativity is exactly the opposite - develop a unique way of finding new and original ways to resolve a problem.
Love your comment, thank you! I think reading about other peoples pov on creativity is also a good way to develop and solidify your own. This book offers this new perspective from Rick's point of view but it don't claim to be the truth, afterall, it's mostly his opinions and experiences. But in reading it, you can perhaps understand thinking patterns that will help you in your own journey. The end product, or your own creativity, will always be uniquely yours no matter what.
Not an example of creative thinking, just an example of idea turned into reality (as I mentioned right after in the video - you can put literally any other "famous idea" in place of uber in that analogy). But I get what you mean, I was an uber delivery driver for a while and I know first hand how bad it can be.

The following is my comment on the book itself, not aimed at the video. I've been doing creative stuff at least 10 years (professionally) and I've read this book and it felt like an intro class to something that you actually don't learn much but get inspired to pursue the field... I'd keep a physical copy as a coffee table book and when I feel down I'd open up a random page to get some inspo boost and that's it. There are other books that can be called holy for creativity. I don't think this one is holy. this is just a 101 course on concept.
Thank you for your comment! To your point, I get what you mean but also think that creativity in general is more of an abstract concept even though we try our best to understand and put it to words like "using knowledge to solve problems" etc etc. I called this book the "bible" more for personal reasons and also because I feel like it approaches it from a mindset/deeper perspective. Would love to know your recommendations for books on creativity as well, it might help people here in the comments section.

@ everybody loves and talks about Julia’s the artist way but I think her “the vein of gold” unlocked something else in me. That’s the first book came to my mind atm
Hey! Thanks for commenting! Didn't mean it in a bad way at all. What I meant is that unlike some other books on creativity that usually explains about the limbic system and your hippocampus or amygdala, he focuses more on the human behavior and mindset side of things. It's all about creativity at the end of the day and I have read books on both sides of the narratives because I'm a nerd, Rick just approaches it from a different angle (nothing wrong with the other angle, of course, just a matter of taste for some people). In watching the video I think you will get what I mean ;)

I'll toss a subscription your way. Think this book will be very useful for me and my AI friend I'm working on.
Great video summary of a great book. Video production quality goes crazy too!! The "you don't own ideas, you own the execution of ideas" hits home.
Thank you so much for your comment! Glad you enjoyed the video and the quote too :)
You are natural talent with making videos! Keep it going!! You'll make it I just know it.🙏
Wow, thank you so much, really. This means a lot. I'll keep going, I promise!
Nice Job! Keep the work Jay. Thank you so much for this
Thank you Carlos! Glad you liked it!

Love your content bro🙌🏻
Thank you so much man, appreciate that!
idk maybe if I read this book when I was 20 but I found it to be very elementary and introductory.

Great quality great point.
Hustle through please!
It will take years but you could have what it takes to become full time.
Thank you so much, it truly means a lot! I'll definitely keep pushing through, with no rush. If if take years, so be it.

Uber? That's your example of creative thinking. A neo-liberal taxi company who put it's "employees" in completion with each other.

Great video! Gonna read this one asap. Você é brasileiro? O sotaque é de brasileiro kkk
Thansk brother! Definitely give it a try, it's an awesome book! Sim, brasileiro ;)

Rick Rubin isn't an artist, he's just good at marketing.
I don't agree. I would say that he is an artist, in his own way. Very subjective tho and I get what you mean.
@@thejaymoraes Misleading people is an art form in its own way 👍
