Glenn Close and Shirley MacLaine might have suffered from category confusion. They were mostly supporting roles but they probably also got votes in lead to ruin chances of getting into either category. Shirley was better than Glenn, so I would have replaced Diane Ladd with Shirley.
It also warms my heart that Christopher and Joyce wanted Home Alone to win best score.

Ray Liotta absolutely should have been nominated, and I think would have been a deserving winner, to boot

Another great episode…. Goodfellas for Best Picture, definitely…. Correction: Best Visual Effects category already existed, but some years it was given out as a special achievement instead of a competitive category

Dances With Wolves has more soul than Goodfellas and is a great examination of America's toxic "manifest destiny" origins, while beautifully capturing the American frontier, totally support that win, but yes Scorsese should have won Director.

What's Joyce's favourite film? She mentioned that it lost Best Picture.

"Saving Private Ryan," (and the "Mighty Ducks" trilogy), which she references in the episode dealing with the "Shakespeare in Love"/"Ryan" year.

The quastion is not why Penny Marshall was snubbed but rather why her movie was nominated at all. Awakening is not a great movie. I hate when a woman failure is been attributed to their gender. Barbra Streisand's Prince of tides was't good either and she deservedly got "snubbed"

Yes, Awakenings sucks. No way it should have been nominated over The Grifters.
