Duff McKagan, I am crying happy tears. I have loved you as a musician, brilliant human and listening to this on a day where the darkest thoughts knotted my innards, it helps. So very much. What gifts you have given! Always light through darkness. And I wish I could meet the little you who did not deserve any abuse, whether psychological, emotional, dis-interest in who you really were. This is a gushy, long-winded way of saying: thank you. And if you ever need a listening ear, place to cry, scream, chatter, be silent, I'm here for you always xx

WOW - this interview has me in tears for many reasons. Duff has an “old sole” and I mean that in the most endearing way. Thank you Marc Brackett for sharing. I’m a huge advocate for mental health awareness. I have ADHD, depression, and anxiety. God Bless us all!

I have so much respect for Duff. He just as easily could've gone down as a rock n roll footnote. Instead he's truly making the world a better place.

I love Duff. I've always looked up to him since the 90s. The more I learn about him, the more I aspire to be like him. He has got to be one of the most intelligent, down-to-Earth, humble, and selfless rockstars ever. And I would say the same about his wife as a model as well. I've read all their books. Power couple of the century!

It's crucial to recognize that we're not alone in our struggles. Many people grapple with similar feelings of self-doubt and self-criticism. Yet, there's power in vulnerability, in sharing our experiences, and in supporting each other on the journey toward self-acceptance and self-love. This Mental Health Month, let's commit-to ourselves and to our loved ones-to prioritize mental well-being. Let's work to break the stigma surrounding mental health and foster a culture of support and understanding. And let's remember that by embracing our own vulnerability, we become better individuals, advocates, and champions for others.
Thank you, Duff, for sharing your journey with us. By opening up about your experiences, you've shown others that they too can seek help and achieve a healthier life.

I'm not the biggest Guns n Roses fan, but I ended up listening to, "It's So Easy...and Other Lies" by Duff in audiobook format entirely because of his struggles with getting sober. It was a great book.
Only thing is, with me, I don't think I CAN get sober... I've been drinking hard liquor to the point of blackout almost every single night since I had just turned 17 (I'm almost 38 now). The amount of damage I have done to my body and how I haven't died is insane. The endless times I've had to withdraw, I have no idea how I haven't stroked out or had a heart attack. I've had seizures from it for sure... I've lost jobs, girlfriends, been to jail, detox, programs. Nothing works, I ALWAYS come back.
I'm extremely anti-social and absolutely love just getting fucked up on my own alone. I have no partner, no kids and no social life. That's all by choice. When I'm sober I utterly love being alone. Other people annoy me to no end and I like that the Internet just allows me to click away from things I don't like into things I like.... One of the biggest reasons I couldn't stick with programs for sobriety is because they CONSTANTLY tried to change me into a "social" person thinking that somehow the addiction would just crumble.... It's like, no dude, a camping trip with 15 people I don't know in an AA room isn't gonna keep me sober longer and for sure I am not going to that.... Those places tend to think that being alone is a bad thing, for me it's literal peace.
As of this writing I am one month sober today from alcohol. I got close (again) to losing my job recently from it, but they are at least working with me on it... I recently started eating edibles after work (weed is legal in my state) to calm down from the day and MOST importantly to aid in sleeping (lifelong chronic insomnia has wrecked me). Whether it's a short or long term fix? Who knows, but it's keeping me off the booze for now.
My problem is that I absolutely cannot be sober for life. If it's not alcohol, my brain will find something else. It's so damaged from 20 years of solid liquor intake that the structure has to have rewired and there's simply no way in hell that I have the willpower to just white knuckle like 18 months of sobriety just to get my sleep back to normal.
Personally I feel this is just a phase and I'll get back to drinking before Christmas of this year (it's mid August 2024 as I type this)... I know deep in my brain that alcohol will kill me, one way or the other. I was sold a bad ticket to life when I got on Earth... Constant sense of being lost in life, no direction, no drive, no further planning, always always always just wanting to go to school and then work and just run home into my room and ignore the world. Not everyone is meant to succeed, I am one of them.
When Duff talks about people like his martial arts, Benny Urquidez, I've met that type before that's always somehow pumped for you to be your best. These people utterly depress me and remind me that I CANNOT * get better * my self-loathing and what I call, "habitual giving up" is so powerful in my mind that I generally just do not try in things. I give up constantly and then drink to deal with the embarrassment.

Thanks a lot for your work Marc! I'm here after Andrew Huberman podcast which moved me so much...! Short story - once my sister asked me to translate the emotional chart listing the variety of feelings but I refused to translate the 'bad' ones... this is how head in the sand I was! I'm a bit better now, but hearing you talk about the differences in feelings and how we describe them - peaked my interest even more and I feel there is hope when we practice with awareness. What saved me was coming back to body: nature therapy with focus on sensations, breath meditations, sauna and sports. I totally agree that EI is a must for everyone who has a face and being in education I feel extra responsibility to be better reading myself and others. Would love to learn so much more from you. Good luck to all of us on this journey 💚

I really appreciate Duff’s honesty. I personally would like to add that a panic attack happens when we are ready to get rid of trash we have been carrying for a long time. When it’s time to deal with the trash and dump it for good. This happens when we are ready to process the experience. Like you I also caught my father having sex with another woman when I was 5 years old. Like you I did not tell anyone and the experience meses me up, it was traumatic and I held inside all those emotions until my fifties, when I relieved the experience during a panic attack, when all the anger and hate towards my father came out. After I was able to heal, forgive and still love my dad.
