    Love getting to work on hedges and topiary from an early stage, very satisfying watch the shape evolve.
    Nice one buddy 👍👏

    Hi Phil, I’m from Sherbrooke Qc. Nice touch of courage talking about pricing here… I’m not in the Cedar trimming business here, but I do a lot of other yard maintenance work. Let’s take removing gravel from lawns as an exemple. People won’t pay much above 35$/hr if I charge by the hour. But if I itemize and quote jobs with a fixed price, let’s say « 80$ » fixed price for that same 1 hr job, people accept it. I have friends with prestigious jobs that are often a bit mad when they realize how much money an hour I can make compared to them. It’e all about how you present your pricing.
    I’m pretty sure it’s the same thing in your work. You charged 100$ for trimming that little hedge which was a 15 minute job and the client was happy to pay that amount for that job. But if you would’ve told the client that you work for 400$ an hour they would’ve kicked you out on the spot 😂😂😂

      Hey ! Well said! In the first years as a business owner, I was scared to charge, and consequently the company didn't grow much. I'm over that now :)

    What are your thoughts on White Cedar for a privacy hedge vs the Black Cedar you were trimming?

    • @phil.vision
      @phil.vision  2 года назад

      Hi Luis! The white cedar will have tendency to grow bigger at maturity, and may by harder to control. One other thing to look into, no matter what you get , is structure A single stem cedar will stay narrow longer than a multi stem tree.

    How far apart are those Thuja's planted to get such great coverage? And when should I start trimming after planting a 4' Thuja and want it to cap out around 8 ft?

    • @phil.vision
      @phil.vision  2 года назад

      These were planted around 24-30" apart on center. I'd cap them at 7' to let the crown fill up until 8'!

    I'm also in Montreal. I would like a cedar hedge that I know can hold up to the winters. Is there much of a difference between white vs black?

    • @phil.vision
      @phil.vision  Год назад

      Hi Noah! So the White will have a more mature final size. I have also seen many with multiple stems from the ground. The Black will have a darker green come winter time. The black will top our at 20' where as the whites can be much taller. What important in all this is structure. Lots of people planted whites in the 70's here in MTL which had multiple stems from the ground. That makes for wide hedges. Best to plant single leader cedar.

    is it possible to shape a mature emerald cedar it’s getting to wide on the bottom

    • @phil.vision
      @phil.vision  5 месяцев назад +1

      Hi! Thanks for stopping by. You are always limited to what the plant has to offer. In the Quebec climate zone, we can't trim too aggressively or past the green on the side. If the emerald will be bare after pruning, its perhaps best to consider replanting a few units. Cheers!
