Distributor rebuild kit: www.kbox.ca/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=34 Don't want to rebuild it? Here's a brand new one: amzn.to/2prglUY Please double check fitment with your 4AGE powered car first :)
Harbor Freight sells a heavy duty chain breaker for less than $20 out the door. Use a coupon and save even more. I tried a vice first and it wasn't happening. With the chain breaker, a long 17mm socket, and. 3/8" ratchet about 8-9" long, the pin snapped out of it's locked position in less than 10 seconds. Just push the chain breaker's handle against a flat surface and hold the back side down with your off hand. The seemingly impossible turned trivial when the right tool was deployed. Do make sure the punch pin is correctly lined up with the shaft pin before cranking down with the ratchet.
Love the videos, just be careful when using heat to 'persuade' steel as it can drastically change the metals structural properties. Most gears are specially heat treated to harden them without making them too brittle. Heating can make the steel soft again which will wear out the gears quickly causing premature failure.
What good information, a question friend, I have to restore the distributor of my 4AGZE but my distributor does not have the pin in the gear, how do I extract this gear? I just pull them with a press and that's it? It seems that it is press fit.
You can remove it regardless of engine position. But you have to put the engine back to tdc and align the distributor gear with the mark on the body when reinstalling it.
It's always a good idea to put the car into tdc when pulling the dizzy. The dizzy will typically have some kind of markings, (in our case, 2 dimples) that will line up at tdc. And you can just use whiteout or a sharpie to mark the adjuster bolts
the distributer cap in this video is exactly the same of my 4age ….. the problem is the cap is broken ….. and cannot find the exact same cap …. will the blacktop’s distributer cap serve the purpose?
Does anyone have an opinion on whether it makes sense to use a little AT-205 Re-Seal on my new distributor seals before reinstalling them? I'd like to minimize the risk of a leak and maximize the lifespan of these seals.
i opened the ep91 4efte distributor to stop the oil leak and discovered the teflon seal inside. It needs to be replaced but there is no information about it and no OEM on the parts website. Why? I changed both gaskets but obviously the oil gets through the dented arm all the way in the rotor box. Please help.
Good thing you've made this video, i figured the distributor on my 4AGE is leaking ! BTW which engine do you have ? Mine is a Bigport Red and Black top, does your kit fits this engine too ?
@@d4a Thank you for your response. Today we pulled out the distributor and we opened it to replace the bearing. Unfortunately I did not find any replacement kit on the Internet (besides the 2 gaskets, rotor and cap) and it is impossible to find the internal Teflon oil gasket. I figured it out opening it. The Toyota manual doesn’t show what is inside the mechanism. Your video was helpful but the Starlet distributor is different. The magnets moved so thanks to the manual I’ve managed to distance the magnets and get get back in to nominal measures. I’m glad it worked out. .
Hey whats the distance those magnets need to be away from the tips on that shaft? I took my 4age mr2 distributor apart to clean out oil. I set them so they are barely touching. To where its not hard to turn each time. Did i do that right? Or do i need a file guage?
There are specs in the factory service manual, you can't really eyeball it, unless you're really lucky. But if the distributor worked well before there's no need to reset them.
Hello. I have 4afe engine and i have check engine light. Guy who scaned my car told me that its distriburator, and other guy told me that i need to change it but he didnt took cover off to see for if something is broken etc. also he told me to look for this thing in junk yard for new one because i cannot buy new distriburator with that gear etc. Can you help me pleaase? thanks.
I put a gear puller on mine put it in a vice grip to prevent the gear puller to open up hit it with a torch and penetrating oil and used a socket wrench to apply as much pressure on the gear
Here's a quick reinstall overview: Rotate engine to TDC. Align mark on distributor gear with mark on distributor body. Install. Be careful that the gear doesn't shift when reinstalling. It really helps to have the cam cover removed when reinstalling. After this get a timing light and rotate distributor until you are at 10 btdc.

Thanks a lotzzzz!,watching you from Bangladesh
Awesome video. Thanks for making it! Do you have to make sure your engine is in a particular position before removing the distributor?

That power stance at 2:44. Distributor in for a beating.
Hahahahah!

Good thing you've made this video, i figured the distributor on my 4AGE is leaking ! BTW which engine do you have ? Mine is a Bigport Red and Black top, does your kit fits this engine too ?
It's not my kit. I believe it fits.
nice vid btw smallports have no knock pin the gear is just pressed on
I love you man. Great vibe! I have a Starlet 4efte distributor that I want to disassemble and change the bearing. Procedure must be similar?
Yes, likely very similar but always proceed with caution and don't force anything

Gotta love D4A!

Thank you! Even though you didn't need it .

You didn't address the electrical components, which actually are the main issue with my Carina 3sfe distributor!
My distributor has no rolling pin. The pin is moulded as one full piece. No way to remove. What do I do? HELP!
I put a gear puller on mine put it in a vice grip to prevent the gear puller to open up hit it with a torch and penetrating oil and used a socket wrench to apply as much pressure on the gear
How do you time the distributor after rebuilding the engine head ??
Timing light?
@@d4a I don’t have one
Buy it? Your alternatives are voodo and fortune telling.
Very helpful
nice now i can rebuild mine as it leaks, instead of sending it to an engineer. would be handy to have a quick reinstall overview. for timings sake :)

you are a scholar and a gent
great tutorial :D
Where are the windings of the distributor
also. the seal had worn a grove into my shaft and it still leaked after changing to a new seal, inspect your shaft folks! :D lol
D4A i miss this intro!!!!!!!!!!!!
Caint find any rebuild kit for my 4ag distributor ! You must have bought the last one ....
It's here....www.ebay.co.uk/itm/253942557917?ViewItem=&item=253942557917&PPX000600&ppid=PPX000600&cnac=GB&rsta=en_GB&cust=8VN01039G5553371L&unptid=5b649396-710a-11e9-b434-441ea14ee788&calc=6f3c0100d1990&unp_tpcid=email-auction-payment-notification&page=main:email:PPX000600:::&pgrp=main:email&e=cl&mchn=em&s=ci&mail=sys
Thanks man 👍🏻
Thanks for sharing.
#protip: i used a slightly modified motorcycle chain tool to press the pin out :)
Why my distributor kept burning
Is that an aw11 cap? It looks strange
I think this is an ae92 cap. My car had parts from at least three different 4ages in it. But the distributor worked fine.
Thankyou
Thank you
The Frankenstein Celicas I build, thank you too.
5:10 🤣 Dang!
Lost it at "lube up the shaft, and slide it in"
Not because I need to,
Cause I want to.. gentleman
Good video but no way this is an easy DIY!!
first
Indeed you are. Here's a virtual high five.
