the microtransactions are missable but the game's greatest sin is having an RNG style "will it work for my computer?" performance issues. mine crashes as soon as i walk out of the gaol even after i turn down all graphical settings to low.
If the argument comes down to, "They are selling these but not in that way," it is a problem. One shouldn't need to split hairs to describe the situation; that is a red flag right there!
Came here to say this. It comes off very problematic to me that while yes you don’t have to buy microtransactions in the game for in game items, then why is it even an option?
The fact that people are "outraged" over the least egregious mtx in a game, is asinine to me. You have to go completely out of your way to buy them. Until the Internet nutted up. I bet most people didn't even know they were there. The game doesn't even tell you you can buy this stuff.
@@Bman32x honest question….but why do you need to care? If you plan on never buying them, and the game NEVER puts you into a place where you have to… Then why are you this upset? Honestly
@@MacheakoThe next step is locking actual features behind a pay wall. This is the in-between step, and if we tolerate it, they'll take it even further. We've seen it time and time again, it's starts off with just a little and before we know it, we're 5 seasons, 6 battle passes, 10 bundles down the road.
@@xxx-pliskin-sniper-xxx8538 but…..like…..wouldn’t THAT be the time when you protest then? Because in ALL fairness to Capcom….they could’ve gotten WAYYYYYYY scummier with this game…. But the micros are basically non-existent ( plus they don’t have any official DD2 online store, it’s just through the various game platforms)
It's pretty easy to tell why the mtx stuff randomly blew up so much with this game. All the PC players angry over the performance issues were looking for more things to be angry about and found an easy target with the mtx.
That really threw me for a loop. Bringing up game of the year in the same breath that you acknowledge that the game is entirely unplayable or plays like ass for a huge portion of the consumers. Its... like, I get that you like the game, but call it what it is. It's unacceptable.
@GreasyManPants You're 100% correct about that, but I genuinely believe that this BUT is more egregious than some. It's now just a dodgy netcode or a small amount of microtransactions, or a few random glitchy cutscenes. It's an absolute unplayable mess for so many people on PC. Some games launch with a few crap aspects, but this game is the crap aspect.
Feels like these guys are missing the point. This is just a 'straw that broke the camel's back' type situation. Have there been other single-player games, from the same developer or others, who were as bad or worse? YES! And that is why we are VERY MUCH DONE WITH IT. The industry, as a whole, has *used up* all benefit of the doubt. That's also why people are happy to believe in wild claims about this-or-that vital feature being locked behind a paywall - NOBODY can say "Oh, they'd NEVER do THAT!" with a straight face. Because they would. And they have. And the only reason they're not doing it RIGHT NOW is that they didn't think they could get away with it. So maybe it's time to let them know that they can't get away with all that OTHER bullshit either. Maybe it's just one straw, but let it be the *last* straw.
They've been doing it to you for years. There are a million straws coming in the future. May as well suck it up and accept MTX are just as much a part of gaming now. Just ignore them or leave gaming alone and stick to playing retro consoles and games without them
Or people can stop setting their expectations so damn high or here's one better stop being such babies about It cause frankly it's dumb I've already read the full reviews for this and the problems the overload of NPCs in cities the micro transactions I swear are there any players that enjoy the grind anymore or are all players just lazy now and want the quickest power up they can get just to get into easy mode pathetic
You actively have to search out these non essential micros. Should they not be there? Yes. Are they going to give you an unfair advantage? Not really. You get tons of this right away just from playing the game. The sad part is the actual issue (PC performance) is taking a backseat for this misguided topic, and I think if the performance was better for PC this topic would not have been so overblown. I’m loving the game on PS5 but the PC definitely needs some love.
Yes and the crazy thing is, the people who are outraged by them haven't even played DDDA or DD2 and don't even plan on playing them. Their loss tbh, both games are great.
Yeah, I agree with you guys on this. I'm against microtransactions but it's odd how sudden the controversy was when people didn't care about worse ones before.
Because it’s literally fast travel. It’s a mechanic that’s in every open world game and never gets charged for. Imagine playing God of War Ragnarok and every time Kratos threw his axe, it used a token. But it’s ok, because you can buy those tokens for only $2. This is the justification people are using. I could only imagine the uproar if this was in a game people hated like Starfield. It would probably break all of social media.
@@HaybudFast travel isn't locked in the slightest. A portcrystal or w/e is simply a way for you to mark *where* you want to teleport to (which there's tons of). And Ferrystones, THE fast travel option, have an infinite supply in-game. At least do some bloody research.
@@Haybud Kind of ignoring the thing that I just said and the point of the video so I'll ask again. Why now when Capcom has been doing worse than this? The video isn't saying "I'm okay with microtransactions" it's saying "I'm less bothered by them in this game because you can just get those items normally."
Were they though? Half of the list is from the pre-order. And the list itself released before the game did. And if people were really such sticklers about mtx, a simple Google search: "does Capcom add mtx to their games" would have told you they have been doing this for everything for the past decade. Including with the very first Dragons Dogma. Not saying it's right, just taking issue with how overblown people try to make it.
@@Macheako RE4 did get a lot of backlash, but just like it seems to be happening here, it died out really quickly when everyone noticed it didn't interfere with normal progression at all.
@@Macheako Imagine Capcom charging you money for ink ribbons or another row to save your game to at a typewriter. Even if you can earn them in the game, why does your ability to save progress be even tied to something financially how ever optional it is. Another example would be if Capcom only gave an SF6 player only 1 ranked character to take into online and you'd need to shell out 10k FP to be able to take another character to ranked or just skip all that for a 1.99 fee. @@jefftharakan1457 When they are not pushed on you, I can swallow microtransactions as long as they are small dollar amount, unlike some crazy FTP games.
Dude, if anything, I’m sorry but in SOME ways they’re actually being cool with these micros because they effectively took all the items from the digital deluxe edition, and make them individually purchasable. So if you just wanted one of the bonus items, you don’t have to spend the total $10 extra. There’s only like 3 items that are exclusive to the steam store
I have like 20 hours in and haven't even seen the microtransactions menu. People just wanna hate bc the game is actually really really good and it's not a Souls-like or multiplayer.
I played like 20 hours of this game over the weekend since i had nothing else to do and i didnt even notice there were mirco transactions until i saw the internet screaming about it. This stuff has always been a controversial thing since the horse armor in Oblivion, DD2 has a good amount of issues(mainly performance) but i have never felt impeded to a point where buying things felt like a necessity to avoid massive grind
I played and loved DDDA, went to Steam to buy DD2, saw the laundry list of DLC, thought, "I need to do more research", read/saw no mention of the DLC but *lots* of complaints about performance, and ultimately decided not to buy the game. In my case, seeing the long list of day-one DLC stopped me long enough to avoid impulse buying a broken game - before I'd done the proper amount of research.
@@Bert2e i play on xbox where it isnt broken, but on pc from the sound of it u should wait due to it performance struggles. The mirco transactions however isnt anything to care for cause u can easily ignore it
@@ZerotheeHero I edited my earlier post to make it a bit more clear. I don't really care about the DLC. My point was *seeing day-one DLC* listed at launch, that was not listed during the pre-purchase period, made me stop, look at reviews, and discover the game had bigger issues. The DLC was "good for me" in that the listing was a big sign reading: "Just a second! Hold on, big fella!" It steered me away from an impulse buy. I still look forward to playing the game - when it's done.
I can certainly understand the outcry and if I'm being honest I was upset when I heard the news about it. But to play devil's advocate, it's pretty tame compared to the current state of the gaming landscape. (1) It's all pay for convenience, but almost (if not) all of the things you can buy, you can earn in-game relatively easily. Personally, I hate the "you don't have to buy it" excuse, but in this case it's true because the things you can buy are barely relevant or impact the game in any meaningful capacity. (2) There are no pop-ups, banners, or in-game hints about being able to purchase microtransactions as an alternative. The only mention about an in-game store is on the main menu (the bottom option, I think) and there is absolutely nothing anywhere that points you to it - in fact, some people who played the game did not even know about it until they saw the online discourse. (3) For those saying they made the fast travel difficult or made the game single save only on purpose so they could sell these things as add-ons, do know that these things already existed in the previous game, and back then they didn't sell anything. So to me it looks like Capcom is just making things a bit easy for the lazy (and you'd have to be EXCEPTIONALLY lazy to want to buy anything in the store). All in all, the microtransactions exist but do not take away from one's enjoyment of the game, and Capcom are not being egregious and in-your-face about it, so I'm personally willing to give them a pass.
I feel like so many people ignored the fact that RE4 Remake had so many similar types of microtransactions as DD2. Was there a big backlash when that released too?
This seems like whataboutism. If I murder someone, murder isn't now legal. What kind of logic is that. It can be wrong in re4 AND dd2. The backlash is the mtx was shadow dropped day 1. People rightly felt like they were being tricked by capcom. CAPCOM grossly mishandled this launch, that's already in the history books.
its literally for people who are cash rich and time poor. Not everyone has hours and hours to grind in a game, so when they have time they just want to go kill a dragon or something.
@@Aramane does that mean they made the game grindy specifically so these people would buy it? Otherwise, there's no reason for single-player game to be grindy.
@@ledkit no. The way dragons dogma plays is that fast travel is barely a thing -- the whole idea of the game is emergent gameplay - what happens as you just walk from one place to another. Its not grindy in the sense that you have to go out and kill 40 orcs just to "farm" a resource or something like that.
Shouldn't have boasted about their world not needing fast travel, but then make the resource which makes fast travel possible so darn rare. Then they say, "oh you can fast travel but will just have to pay for it".
I have 3 portcrystals now. Only needed one once for the sphinx because i did not like climbing the mountain over and over again. Now that Im done with the sphinx, i dont know where to put the portcrystals now. Everything is just a couple minutes walk which is good for grinding and farming anyway. Anyone further out is either available via oxcart or thry have their own riftstone anyway. So there is no need to buy the portcrystal unless you are just an impatient person and at that point, why are you even playing this game?
Also because it's just a fun game, a celebration of the original, the franchise and gaming in general. Some random pawns or Tifa, Barret, Red and co? No brainer for me. 😉
I would say FF7 Rebirth also has not had as many performance issues (some bugs etc.) and no major “scandals.” Also just based on meta critic scores, I would say FF7R is the clear winner (for now).
FF7 Rebirth is definitely more deserving of GotY consideration on the grounds that it actually looks and especially runs like a new, AAA game and NOT like a slightly prettier, PS3 game.
So for me if Im paying 90 dollars (Canadian) for a premium game I expect to not have to pay ANY money for extras. It costs me a week of food to buy a VG so Im not paying more for costumes etc. If its a mobile game thats free to download thats fine but not if im paying 90 dollars for the game itself.
Just so you know, you won't be paying for anything but the game. And I totally understand what you say about costumes, I'm the kind of person that likes cosmetics on games and doesn't like them being behind a paywall. Fortunately, this is not the case at all.
@@kikiphallin thx. TBH one of the reasons I only pay nintendo is because they're not as bad as PS and Xbox when it comes to microtransactions. I don't mind paying 90 and then six months later paying 20-40 (depending on what it is) for the expansion dlc such as Zelda or Pokemon but when I have to pay extra to beat a game or extra saves etc that's annoying.
Having Micro transactions does suck, but its not like you cant beat the game without using them. No one is holding a gun to your head forcing you to buy them, if you enjoy the game just ignore them and play away. No need to get your panties in a wad, life is to short to stress this much about dumb things.
Never gonna change though. Lots of misinformation though. Things that they are selling are trivial and ignorance.. not saying that's OK. But you dk t need any of them. Maybe the rc takes the piss. And if they.put the erlternal ferrystone that would take the piss..
I’m actually really vulnerable to these kinds of micros. I play games for the stories. Loot grinding and resource gathering doesn’t do anything for me. A lot of people like it and that’s great, not my thing. So a micro that lets me cut some of that out is very tempting. What bothers me is when I feel like resource management in a game has been intentionally over complicated or fluffed in order to make micros more appealing.
1. There is a way to get an infinite gaol key without paying a cent. If you’re creative, you’ll find a way. If not, microtransactions’ve got you. 2. No fast travel seems more like a feature of the game rather than a flaw. I appreciate this more realistic side of DD2, even though it can be kind of annoying to travel the same roads again and again.
No. Another misinformation. You can start a new game butbit will overwrite your existing game. Why would you even need to create multiple characters!? Dumb way to play dragons dogma
It just baffles me how they chose the most forgettable, completely mild and almost unnoticeable version of micro transaction to complain about lol like it doesn’t seem real.
this! Its so weird that these microtransactions: which arent in game, arent pushed on you, that you dont see unless you go looking for them in the PS store etc, that you dont need to play and finish the game, are the ones they complain about.
To answer your question - I buy stuff like this. I've gotten to the point where it's super hard for me to get mentally invested in a game when I know it's going to take up so much of my time, so purchasing things that help me get through the game quicker (like for RE4 Remake) helps me to finally jump in and feel like I'm actually able to enjoy the story and finally beat a game that's been stuck in my backlog for ages. I likely wouldn't purchase these kinds of things if games had a better "easy/story" mode that truly helped me to enjoy them without getting to slowed down when I already have limited time for them. It's the trade I make because I'm able to pay the cost and for me it's worth it. Where I would not be OK with these types of microtransactions would be if it did feel exploitative...but I don't feel like that's the case here.
Games used to have cheatcodes and level passwords for exactly this kind of reason, and they weren't locked behind paywalls either. Want to skip a level because it's too hard? Use a passcode to get to the next one. Want to skip the grind and just buy the cool item you want right now? Use a money cheat. It's insane that we've normalized the idea that you have to pay more to play less of the game you bought.
I think the only reason the micro transactions came into the conversation is because of the weird design decisions. Many people dont like the lack of quest markers, single save, and lack of fast travel. When you add convenience purchases on top of a design thats inconvenient it makes that a talking point. Im not saying the design is bad or the wrong move, i just think that is why the microtransactions get more focus in this game than capcoms previous games that also had them.
I think some of the anger is essentially based on the player ranking system, something DMC and RE4 didn’t have. The advantages money up front fans will have in order to be the top ranked arisen and pawns of the game. That said I played GTA online since launch, never spent money for in game money, and I will play Dragon’s Dogma 2 and never use micro-transactions.
"Oh, but other games are worse" - This stance completely misses the point of the controversy, just like saying "It was always in the code" doesn't justify the fact that NOT A SINGLE PRE-RELEASE REVIEW mentioned them at all, you can't say they weren't added after launch on that basis. This may not be Battlefront 2 level scumbaggery but I'll still pass on a game that tries to pull that sort of bullshit, and don't even start to try to justify DENUVO being added last minute. Microtransaction crap didn't seem to be needed in BG3, can see no reason why they are needed in DD2...
9 of those items are from the deluxe edition of the game. imagine being able to buy the deluxe edition content separate from the deluxe edition of the game. ffs, imagine if it were the other way around, if you had to buy a second version of the game if you wanted the deluxe content. and as for the rift crystals, anyone that played the first game should have known they would sell them.
I think the issue is that the game wasn't shown to have microtransactions during its promotions (that I can think of). Then, when people buy the game, hey look they have microtransactions. You know the devs and publisher actively decided to not show any microtransactions while promoting the game because they know it hurts initial sales. That's shady.
Scott and Josh are unquestionably amongst my top 3 game reviewers. I actually bought Dragons Dogma 2 because of Josh's review a few days ago. Given the controversy concerning review copies apparently containing microtransaction information, and what it says about the corrupt state of Games Journalism, I was relieved to hear Scott state that they didn't even "have a full review for it anyways." And that makes sense. There's a reason they are a trustworthy source! Because they are gamers first. Rather than advertisers pretending to be gamers.
A very balanced take - thanks for this. It's just a perfect storm of incomprehensible publisher decisions - like DRM / MTX - coupled with the typical Day 1 optimization issues, bogging down an amazing game. Tragic to me that this mismanagement might mean the end of this wonderful franchise.
Been playing for a couple days now and the "microtransactions" are in the PS store and don't show up in the game AT ALL. Literally the only time I saw them was when buying the game from the store... That said those who've played DD1 knows fast travel was rare from the jump
Capcom have been doing purchasable resources for years in their games, its nothing new. Feels like people just want stuff to be angry about these days. The game is fun. Just enjoy it!
This is all about loss of trust. If someone steals from you, you'll never be comfortable with that person (AAA) again. That's what is happening here. Capcom deserves this feedback.
I think we're getting to a tipping point in gaming. People are getting sick of being nickle and dimed to death, and it's actually more like 10 to 30 dollar you. Most games have 3 different versions to start with, then add in micro transactions. It's getting nuts. This game just might be the game the community says we've had enough, and it's just a case of bad timing. You basically admitted people might be buying stuff they don't even need in this game. That makes it even worse.
Nope this hasn't changed anything you live in a bubble, sales are good, players are going up, the actual player reviews are coming in and raising the score. If anything giving this game so much press is just helping sales. Most people aren't in your subreddit or discord buddy.
@lakeofrot4198 I dont do either of those, ma'am. You probably can't wait to pay thousands of dollars to play Call of Duty every year. Hey, do your thing. @@timothym7608 Pretty sure you're the one not comprehending. Don't play cod or buy any micro transactions or pre order games. Try harder on your insults.
@@lakeofrot4198Dude, you're really unnecessarily hostile. Sony just cancelled half their live service games. There is a sea change happening. MTX should always be criticized. People defending them are allowing the expansion of their prevolence as the publishers dont worry as much about the PR and start pumping it in more. Wherever there is MTX, there is some mechanic that pushes people to buy it. Yes, someone can play and never buy MTX, but because they exist, games will be designed around them. Maybe DD2 isn't as bad as others, but from what Ive heard enemy encounters happen kind of often and paying for fast travel looks more and more of an option as you hit 60+ hrs and the encounters get less fun. How do we know there weren't more fairy stones in the base game and they scaled it back to see the MTX?

At this point if this annoys you, just leave gaming or stick to just retro games that don't have them
If you don’t see a problem with micro transactions in a single player game you’re part of the problem. Doesn’t matter if you need them, it’s the greedy principle of them being there in the first place
I feel like this argument is normalizing microtransactions in video games. It’s just what the developers are hoping for. We’ve gone from “Microtransactions are bad!” to “Microtransactions…they could be worse!”
Honestly I had not even realized there was micro transactions. I am about 50 hours in. It really isn’t pushed at all. I have tons of RC from exploring and have not spent it once on pawns. Didn’t know there was anywhere else to spend it until this video.
Capcom learned its lesson after the SF 5 debacle. They have a good idea where the line is and how not to cross it. Maybe their post-launch revenue is a part of the reason they were able to announce pay standard increases, while many other companies are laying people off.

I think the difference between DD2 and Resident Evil 4 is that we've collectively raised our standards on what we're willing to accept over the last year. If you notice a lot of Hollywood movies are flopping at the box office as well. I still bought the game as I was a fan of the first one but I can see a huge shift happening in entertainment and I'm here for it.
I welcomed the RE 4 remake store items that gave me unlimited ammo etc because it enabled me to get the best fun out of my £50 I spent and enabled me to finish the game. Without that I didn't have the patience or time to finish it otherwise
I’d like to know the actual development costs versus profits versus money being put into these very expensive games to make in the future and if these micro transactions are just for that or is it a greed thing. 🤷🏽♂️
What makes the "Art of Metamorphosis" one so bad is the single save and no legitimate in-game "official" way to create a new character. Yes I can eventually find/buy this item in game, but new players don't know how long they might take. As a new player all I see is "oh, I don't like my guy, let's change him" then I find the only way is to pay?
Capcom is doing microtranactions right. They always do a currency mictrotransactions in their games. Devil May Cry 4, 5, Resident Evil 2, 3, 4, and even in the OG Dragons Dogma. They are a choice you dont HAVE to make. Its all stuff they can be earned in game and by no means are ever forced to buy them. Its mostly aimed for people who don't have the time to play as much as they want or people just to lazy to earn them naturally. Gamers are a fickle bunch sometimes.
Exactly. The anger is misplaced. These are by far the least invasive and/or predatory method of monetization/microtransactions. Not to mention the majority of the things up for sale we're things included in the deluxe edition like the music and graphic options or a few items. The rift crystals is the only thing that feels a bit icky, but it's a single player game and none of it impacts the game at all.

They were told to put them in and in response they made ones that no one would buy as a middle finger.
@AshXXMayftw I explained why they are added. It's for those who don't have the time to spend on a 60hour-90hour game. Do I like that it's there? Not really? But am I going to go up in arms because developers want to give a certain demo a choice? No, as well. Nobody cared when Devil May Cry, which is like an 8-12 hour story gets them, so why does an 80+ hour game get the anger?
The single save might be the worst for me, but that's because I'm a scummy summer and have been spoiled by modern games. I'm sure it will have something to do with the pawn system though, either to limit the number of pawns people release into the wild to give a fairer chance of everyone's being used, or to prevent too many pawns becoming inactive and useless due to repeated client side restarts of that's how it works. Frustrating, but since it's a semi-online game I understand if they need to consider these things. Could surely just let us have two at least though?
Deep rock galactic does micro transactions really well. They are all cosmetic, and the dev team listens to the community and truly cares about making an enjoyable game, and I know many players buy these to help support the devs.
no if i buy a game, i MUST have every right to do whatever i want to the data I bought as long as it's not illegal (copy and redistribute) I'll hack, I'll mod, I'll cheat, I'll altered however i want. i ruined my own fun by my own choice. and if they prevent me from doing it... it's suck.
What I think the presenters are missing is that, one, we have seen how bad micro transactions can be, and two, having them in the game from the start allows for "rebalancing" of drops if Capcom doesn't get enough micro transaction revenue.
Microtransactions are rubbish but thier in every game now people need to just accept it. You don't have to buy anything. Chill out and enjoy the game as its mint 🎉
Lack of fast travel was infuriating in 2012. It's back with a vengeance in 2024, and the game director actually went out of his way to rub it in everyone's face. And now they're selling the blasted fast travel as micro transactions. The backlash is 100% justified. You can't take a dump on Ubisoft for selling "grind shortcuts" and give Capcom a pass for the same kind of scummy practices.
While I expected micro-transactions akin to what's in MHW or MHR, I wasn't happy to see items like the Wakestone being sold. The problem is these items are not vanity items, these items are crucial to the game (like Wakestones bringing back dead NPC's due to the Dragon plague) and in turn prey upon consumers. Regardless if you interact with the shop or not, it shouldn't be this insideous and predatory.
Why does no one talk about how these are pre order and deluxe edition content. Ofcourse they are charging for the deluxe content! But hate, I will be over hear playing and having a blast.
Microtransactions stink, but the internet went way overboard on this. People want to hate this game because of its performance issue's. The internet is obsessed with framerate to an unhealthy degree.
The surprise about the backlash shouldn't be about that it happened to this game and not others. It should be surprise that it took so long for the backlash to happen at all. We really need to call out greedy practices so it doesn't happen in the future
Part of the problem too is some of the people they gave review copies were given info on the mtx but others never got that and then some people said they all got that info.
A 75 dollar game should not have micro transactions. Period. Whether or not they’re easily accessible is irrelevant. This video feels a lot like shilling
There's immeasurable examples of console rpgs that aren't optimized on pc. Arkham Knight didn't come to pc for years and was absolutely unplayable for even longer on pc. The crutch is that there are more pc gamers now than ever, and people don't know this happens all the time.
The difference between RE4/DMC5 microtransactions were 1. small inconsequential things you can buy to support the game further (yeah you get weapons but the ones you earn are way better) 2. skip resource farming (resources that you literally obtain by playing). In what way is it acceptable for you to have to EARN THE RIGHT to save multiple files or reset your character. w.t.f.... I do not care if you can "earn" another savefile or earn the ability to delete a character but having a microtransaction to do that is a step too far. Cosmetics. Fine, Pay to skip. fine. But pay to just access a save file should only be relegated to F2P and even then you can just delete the character and start new. Even streetfighter 6 with its expensive asf cosmetics didn't get as much flak because it's just cosmetics. Imagine having to pay everytime you wanted to register another fighter in the ranking system that would be a bunch of BS. Or having RE4 allow you to purchase another slot to save over at a typewriter, I'm not talking about ink ribbons the actual slot you can use so you don't soft lock a playthrough.
Honestly, the suckers who pay for microtransactions annoy me more than the presence of the transactions themselves. I've always just tuned them out and play my games as though they don't exist, but the whales who throw their money away on that nonsense are the reason why microtransactions continue to exist, and why we end up with games that are deliberately made less enjoyable to entice us to pay more to get the fun put back in.
They are optional. However, bonus music from past games+ remixes (DMCV) are dlc Including life stones, magic stones, and more are optional dlc Same with RE Remakes altogether, 2-4 have the original soundtrack, but it is dlc Plus early access to gear, which you acquired by playing the game itself
Well, when Assassin's Creed Origins came out, I did actually buy some of those packed. Because I just wanted to upgrade my gear faster. And I didn't have a lot of time free time to do this because I had a full-time job and relationships to deal with, so I couldn't spend 4 hours just grinding or finding resources to upgrade my gear.
Doing the same in AC Odyssey. I don’t HAVE to do it, I played the game a long time before checking out the store. But grabbing a few timesavers and goofy looks for my horse is both fun and saving me time so I can spend more time just exploring and kicking ass (literally - SPARTAN KICK!) I will be playing the hell out of the game for a while, so for me it’s worth it. But in this game it’s entirely optional. Sounds like it is in DD2 also? I dunno. I can see both sides of his particular kerfuffle
I think you just saw a backlash of "Microtransaction fatigue". I always remember that saying, "What you tolerate you encourage" and you have I think a group of people who are just tired of them. Too many companies did MT wrong that even when someone comes out and does it right it's going to be frowned upon.
decade may slightly be pushing it, but I would say definitely of the year when the game works properly since I do not see any other games in the market doing some of the dynamic things you can do in this game. I mean in what other game can you have a giant monster just randomly show up in a town unscripted that you and the other villagers can fight,
@@jefftharakan1457 yeah, mostly just my personal preference. Played the first one and beat it multiple times over. No game since has quite scratched that fantasy itch for me. Not bg3, not elden ring, not skyrim. Not saying any of these games are bad, not in the least, they are amazing. Just that dragons dogma is unique in its own way. And the second one is looking to be even better so far.
For me, it has to do with the fact that we have been waiting for over a decade for a sequel to Dragons Dogma and when it was finally announced and subsequently released to rave reviews, I had hopes that Capcom would FINALLY start to look at their other lesser used IPs and give them another go. When the micro transactions came to light, it soured the mood for me. Like they just couldn’t hold their greed back for at least a week. To me it shows that they don’t have faith in their brand to be financially successful on their own. It’s like being cooked a 5 star meal with all the presentation of aristocracy and in a little tiny bowl next to the meal, is a turd just sitting there, staring at you. Sure you don’t have to eat the turd, it’s optional. But as you try to eat the main course, you can’t help but look over every so often at the turd, occasionally catching a waft of its scent and lessening the quality of the main dish. That is what micro transactions are for me. An optional turd in a bowl staring at me when I just want to enjoy the main dish that is the game. Their greed has cost them my patronage forever. I will NEVER buy capcom games or any merchandise from them ever again. It wasn’t enough that they killed the mega man franchise that they had to kill another one for us.
Let's be honest Megaman is overrated. Each game is the same thing just with different stages and bosses and maybe some new game mechanics but that's it. People got bored with Megaman because it became stale. It's like finding a really good flavor of chips and you keep getting them until you just get tired of the flavor and want something else
Disposable income has little to do with it. I could buy whatever microtransaction I want and not care about the money at all, I just couldn't bring myself to support that trash.
Is the criticism given the extent of the micro transactions overblown, yes. Will publishers look at this and hesitate next time, we can hope. And that's the point.
The first dragons dogma was a slog to get thru because of its fast travel system, they had to come out with the arrisen dlc to remedy it. They did the same thing again. just in a slightly varied way. That's the problem i have with it.
It's black and white for me. If they're in a game (to any extent outside massive DLC expansions ala Ringed City in DS3), I'm never playing it. It's that simple. I've never owned and will never own any of the new Resi games or any of the 'live services'. As long as Larian, CDPR and FromSoft exist, I'll have decent games to play. MTXs are an exploitative system that never should've been tolerated in video games in the first place. It doesn't matter that you can find the things in-game. It doesn't matter that it's 'only cosmetic'. The game devs are putting it in the game because they've done the math and they know that a certain fraction of their players will get frustrated enough by the grind to buy these. I'm not supporting that in any way and if I find out that a reviewer knew about MTX and didn't disclose it, that's a huge red flag for me.
First of all, thank you guys for not hoping on the hate bandwagon like a lot of other content creators did just for views and likes and actually clarifying this whole mtx to a lot of people, . That being said, I'll be honest... I really don't care about these mtx at all and I would go as far as to say that I think I actually prefer they exist in a way that, I know this huge games cost a lot to make, I'm aware that the price of full games right now is as cheap as it has ever been considering inflation and most of all, I'm aware Dragon's Dogma might not be as popular as other franchises and those of us who loved the first one, for the longest time, didn't even expect to have a sequel at all. If this useless microtransactions (from a player perspective) give some extra money to the publishers while also giving them more incentive to make another game, then I'm onboard, keep selling this useless stuff if it helps you fund the next game in the series while we get a complete package of a game with no mtx driven game design (as evidenced by all the good reviews).
I am not completely against microtransactions, it's a great way for the company to make some more money. My issue is when the game suffers for those. The amount of time needed to unlock Vader was insane and the ac games are extra grindy just so that people are inclined to buy time savers. Dragons dogma is very much optional, and not even aggressive with them. These micros do not keep me from enjoying the game, but maybe it'll help someone else enjoy theirs a little more
Given that Capcom and Ubisoft keeps on doing these time savers there is got to be an audience for them people dumb enough to keep paying for them that is why it is so prevalent now a days.
I actually heard a lot of criticisms about the micro transactions in DMC5. In fact that feedback contributed to me not buying it. As an older gamer, im never in favor of micro transactions in single player games. I grew up on 25 years of incredible releases that never implemented mtx. They are unnecessary and a component of greed. The only time i think they should be tolerated is in live service games, and even then they should be balanced and not predatory.
It’s the new gaming model for extra income. Maybe 10k peoples will pay a big amount or 1000k willing to pay extra for a small amount. So why wouldn’t they…
I looked at the MOSTLY NEGATIVE steam reviews to see this isn't going to be anything close to a GOTY. Microtransactions aside, I'm just seeing it plagued full of bugs and a bad storyline.
To me the game is underwhelming, the two weapon system for the strider was great, but the wayfarer is mid since you only get 3 skills, yet you can equip 9 weapons. Also there's a lack of classes since the hybrid aren't actual hybrids anymore there separate classes. So, no ranger, assassin, mystic knight, the magic archer is there but mid compared to the two weapon version. Also it feels like they wanted to make the game more difficult by adding more restrictions.
The Problem with the justification is that they are selling you a game full price but they are piecing it apart artificially limiting you so then they can sell you alternative Solutions and that’s the problem with the gaming industry if you give them a inch they will take a mile 20 years ago it was started by BGS For Horse armor and now they are close to sell you standards like fast travel and save slots as the norm for FULL PRICE GAME
Thank you guys for having a real conversation about this. I agree, obviously, micro transactions suck and they could/should have just left them out. However, these specific micro transactions do not inhibit or affect my gameplay in the slightest. My bigger issue is the frame rate drops and things that ACTUALLY affect my gameplay experience. It’s a phenomenal game but has its problems. The micro transactions are not the biggest though (surprisingly).
As a parent, and work extremely long hours. I lose time to play games as long as I used to when I was care free. There's times that these small single player transactions are useful to me. Can I pour over 100hrs to RE4? No, but do I want to enjoy my second playthrough? yes.
the microtransactions are missable but the game's greatest sin is having an RNG style "will it work for my computer?" performance issues. mine crashes as soon as i walk out of the gaol even after i turn down all graphical settings to low.
If you plan on never buying them, and the game NEVER puts you into a place where you have to…
Then why are you this upset?

Exactly this. These microtransactions are just an excuse to trash the game because it doesn't run at 60 fps.
@@seancdavis13it doesn’t run at 60 fps. That’s kinda trash tbh.
@@Ardyrezv Most people have no idea and don't care. Hard-core gamers care about fps. Normies have no clue.

Exactly.
No game of the year should have a "it's a good game BUT......"
couldnt have said it better
Every single one of them has lol
That really threw me for a loop. Bringing up game of the year in the same breath that you acknowledge that the game is entirely unplayable or plays like ass for a huge portion of the consumers. Its... like, I get that you like the game, but call it what it is. It's unacceptable.
What game doesn't have this qualifier though?
Literally every game can be described this way.
@GreasyManPants
You're 100% correct about that, but I genuinely believe that this BUT is more egregious than some.
Just ignore them or leave gaming alone and stick to playing retro consoles and games without them
Too bad this if anything has just increased sales.
O really? Cause DMC:5 was just, unplayable was it?
And you simply couldn’t beat RE:4 without the micros right?
Right?! 😂❤
the irony about this all is the original had the exact same microtransactions
You can buy fast travel in the original horizon game, which it also wasn’t locked behind a paywall in, this is nothing new
@@HaybudYou have no idea what you’re talking about, do you even know how the fast travel works in this game?
The micro transactions being hidden until launch I think was certainly a contributing factor here.
Like how RE:4 just snuck them in after the launch…
This is more scummy than that?
@@Macheako RE4 did get a lot of backlash, but just like it seems to be happening here, it died out really quickly when everyone noticed it didn't interfere with normal progression at all.

Go and start a new character and save, get your wallet ready
I played and loved DDDA, went to Steam to buy DD2, saw the laundry list of DLC, thought, "I need to do more research", read/saw no mention of the DLC but *lots* of complaints about performance, and ultimately decided not to buy the game.
In my case, seeing the long list of day-one DLC stopped me long enough to avoid impulse buying a broken game - before I'd done the proper amount of research.

I'm sick of paying for games I've already fucking payed for xbox!!!! No more micro transactions!!!
Here to stay
Good thing you don't have to do that at all in this game 👍
So you admit you’ve been paying for them all this time 😂❤

I feel like so many people ignored the fact that RE4 Remake had so many similar types of microtransactions as DD2. Was there a big backlash when that released too?
It was VERY minor compared to this
This seems like whataboutism.
Even if these items are easily accessible, why are they sold? This is ridiculous.
Because they are still somewhat rare to find. The store is just in case you don't want to bother with the very minor grind
@@luvstagrind and that's a slippery slope to skip more and more

As much as I’m enjoying DD2, I think FF7 Rebirth will take GOTY since it has the support of a huge fan base world wide since 1997.

Agreed
Sounds like you don't really like playing video games and should probably stop.
Ok you are like the first valid take imo lol the rankings is a valid concern.
And that’s 100% on the reviewers who got that information, no? Sure Capcom couldn’ve said something too, no argument there
9 of those items are from the deluxe edition of the game. imagine being able to buy the deluxe edition content separate from the deluxe edition of the game. ffs, imagine if it were the other way around, if you had to buy a second version of the game if you wanted the deluxe content.
and as for the rift crystals, anyone that played the first game should have known they would sell them.
@Joe-no7gs I love misinformed people like you too.
@Joe-no7gsyeah... that's what he said.
Capcom have been doing purchasable resources for years in their games, its nothing new.
Feels like people just want stuff to be angry about these days.
The game is fun. Just enjoy it!
You could buy Red Obs etc in DMC4... 2008 people. Capcom are gonna Capcom 😅
I’ve played DD2 for 20h so far and I didn’t know there were mtx in the game until now lol… it’s ridiculous to have them tho
@lakeofrot4198
I dont do either of those, ma'am. You probably can't wait to pay thousands of dollars to play Call of Duty every year. Hey, do your thing. It's not a bubble to say people don't like micro-transactions. Obviously, the back lash should have told you that. Also, I said nothing about the game. It was all about micro-transactions. It almost seems like you have a hard time comprehending.
DD2 is at 51% on steam, people are mad and you're the one in a bubble if you can't see what's happening. That 51% isn't selling anyone who wasn't already sold. That translates to lost sales. If you want to simp for capcom, then let's play by capcom rules. You can reply for 2$ lol.
@@_Smarf_ Keep pretending your making a difference keyboard warrior.
People are just done with micro transactions and speaking out. Customers taking back their control and voting with they wallets. Its about time.
Just wished they could have picked a game with *actual* predatory mtx to boycott instead of the literal tamest example of mtx, but still.
@@Zephy_SkyFor real, honestly they sound like children and these games have been releasing like this for years now.
Games will have MTX. Past games have them, current games have them, and I guarantee future games will have them. They are complaining to a very expensive corporate wall that doesn't care to listen to their whining.
I think the word Josh was looking for is “ancillary”.
I recently finished RE4 remake and had no idea there were microtransactions until now.
That is not true, with SF6, an outside leaker had access to character artwork on who would be part of the roster throughout the game
Capcom themselves advertised adverts on collabs with Chipotle, and other brands
An outside leaker had access to character artwork featuring the complete roster for the game
Capcom advertised adverts on collabs with Chipotle, and others pertaining to the fight money currency
The battle pass, if you do not buy it, denies you access to bonus music, arcade games in your in game library. And the ridiculous avatar gear, which you can only use for that character
The character pass, battle pass, and everything were advertised long before the game release. Everything was included if you bought the collector's edition
Standard. Crickets
So no, Capcom did not learn from 5.
@@kadosho02So you know for a fact that the post launch character were ready to before launch? Artwork and fully animated characters are two different things.
How hard is it to acquire the fight money currency in game?
You mean if you by the battlepass you get something worthwhile while not interfering with the base game, truly dastardly.
And your final point it was all advertised beforehand and they received glowing reviews, that sounds like a successful business strategy worth repeating.
@@valetboy21 the roster: early reveal
They have four to start as bonus dlc, in the season pass. It was announced with everything before release.
Fight money: you have options:
Chipotle or other Collab offers FM as a reward from buying their products
A purchase that can range from $5-20+
There are separate collabs that have their own set items. However their prices can add up. The TMNT campaign cost even more than buying the game itself. Spy X Family has extra purchasable content, and others on the way. These are limited time events
The Battle pass: there is a free version, but severely limited
BP: $5 per month
Music and access to bonus arcade games are locked to this
However there is no ability to change the in game soundtrack before matches
Their glowing reviews had mixed response. Not everything was announced before day one. They later revealed the use of FM
The season passes were announced in advance, later near release is when they advertised who was joining the roster after some time.
Sounds like you suck at the game.
I’d like to know the actual development costs versus profits versus money being put into these very expensive games to make in the future and if these micro transactions are just for that or is it a greed thing. 🤷🏽♂️
Played all Saturday didn’t have to buy none and had a ball .
same!! still left a bad review thou.
@@austindrake4697 that's dumb.
Then why add them in the first place if you can get them in game? It's completely unnecessary and just greedy.
@@AshXXMayftw "Because I work 10-12 hour days and I don't wanna have to grind for rift crystals late game just to buy some of the more expensive gear." - Someone probably
Honestly, I don't think enough people would spend money to make it worth it. Nothing outside of the alternate music or graphics is worth how much it costs.
They almost feel like microtransactions included out of spite.
They are all cosmetic, and the dev team listens to the community and truly cares about making an enjoyable game, and I know many players buy these to help support the devs.
no
if i buy a game, i MUST have every right to do whatever i want to the data I bought as long as it's not illegal (copy and redistribute)
I'll hack, I'll mod, I'll cheat, I'll altered however i want.
i ruined my own fun by my own choice.
and if they prevent me from doing it...
Question is, if it's so easy to find the things in the game, then why bother selling them as MTX?
While I expected micro-transactions akin to what's in MHW or MHR, I wasn't happy to see items like the Wakestone being sold. The problem is these items are not vanity items, these items are crucial to the game (like Wakestones bringing back dead NPC's due to the Dragon plague) and in turn prey upon consumers. Regardless if you interact with the shop or not, it shouldn't be this insideous and predatory.
Why does no one talk about how these are pre order and deluxe edition content. Ofcourse they are charging for the deluxe content! But hate, I will be over hear playing and having a blast.
You also can't buy ferry stones. Just port crystals. And it's all a one time buy. Can't whale and buy 10 of any of these items.
I remember them non stop bashing shadow of war for the exact same thing despite it been exactly same as dd2
I didn't even know dmc 5 and re4 remake had micro transactions
They are optional. However, bonus music from past games+ remixes (DMCV) are dlc
Including life stones, magic stones, and more are optional dlc
Same with RE Remakes altogether, 2-4 have the original soundtrack, but it is dlc
Plus early access to gear, which you acquired by playing the game itself
All those things in the first one and that is why all we get the dark arisen edition with all the dlc ....
@@landonewts very true.
I think you just saw a backlash of "Microtransaction fatigue". I always remember that saying, "What you tolerate you encourage" and you have I think a group of people who are just tired of them. Too many companies did MT wrong that even when someone comes out and does it right it's going to be frowned upon.
Capcom also added the hated Enigma DRM in 2024 to even 10 year old single player games...
With or without these incredibly tame and ignorable mtx.
Dragons Dogma 2 is my game of the year.
If not game of the decade.
Bg3 is game of decade. Dd2 is okay
@@Sparticulous bg3 is amazing for sure.

decade may slightly be pushing it, but I would say definitely of the year when the game works properly since I do not see any other games in the market doing some of the dynamic things you can do in this game.
You need to play more games, mate. 😉
People act like capcom already took their credit card and bought the items. It's all stuff that's IN THE GAME
Still don’t get the controversy, or rather the why. Every answer I see for why now is something that has been around long enough to become the norm.
Disposable income has little to do with it. I could buy whatever microtransaction I want and not care about the money at all, I just couldn't bring myself to support that trash.
The horse armor in the old elder scroll you also dont need it. a decade later The Microtransactions now in gaming is really BAD!
Is the criticism given the extent of the micro transactions overblown, yes. Will publishers look at this and hesitate next time, we can hope. And that's the point.
They've been doing it for years.
You can’t be serious….”we” ate up RE:4 and DMC:5 and MH….
We’re ALLLLLL guilty of buying stupid MTX’s that keep this practice alive lmaoooo 😂❤
What's the microtransaction cost for all of whatculture to stop using these hard cut video endings?
No matter how insignificant the MTX are they shouldn't be in a 70 dollar game in the first place
Thanks for clearing this up lads. Good to hear. 😊
The game crashes every 5 minutes, but the microtransactions work! They have their priorities all out of whack.
No, but do I want to enjoy my second playthrough? yes.
Download mods or use cheat engine... wtf are you smoking.
