I dunno. The way those guys move on the ice is pretty impressive, but the rules of Aussie rules were deliberately designed to allow for a very fast-paced game.
The AFL players have played since they were young. So the stamina is developed for the game from a very young age so many Australian children are fit and enjoy their local sports.

This keeps the ball in play, like the option to "play on" after a "mark, or take the awarded kick. It is not supposed to be rugby, nor basketball (ever tried "bouncing an oval football while running on grass or dirt?). It is a full on contact sport for the hardy, but not one in which you can cripple an opponent for life, like tackling below the knees in rugby or slamming like "grid iron" football. Melbourne Football Club was founded in 1859 and is one of the oldest football clubs of any code still in existence. Compared to many other sports ALL players are multiskilled e.g. run fast, jump high, catch a ball, handball a pass, kick accurately, and have huge amounts of stamina.

AFL was codified years before soccer, rugby and American football. The average player is 6'2''. They run, on average, 9 to 12 miles per game. They are probably the fittest and the best conditioned athletes playing any football type game. The game is hard, aggressive and can get violent but has been cleaned up over the last 10 or 15 years. See some you tube videos on 'AFL hardest hits'. 'AFL best marks' (that is a clean catch of the ball...very spectacular) and AFL best goals' (IE best scoring shots). For a look at the game before it was cleaned up try "AFL hardest enforcers' or 'AFL - a line in the sand'. And it really did need to be cleaned up. I’m glad your enjoying our game, but I should point out that the first “rules” video is unfortunately full of inaccuracies and omissions, and that’s odd since it was the Australian AFL ruling body that commissioned it. The very first thing to be addressed, is that this game is NOT a mix of other games. And unlike a lot of American viewers (naturally and understandably) assume, this game has absolutely no historical link whatsoever to gridiron. As mentioned elsewhere, it was invented years before gridiron, and there was also very little cultural contact between Australia and the USA before WW2. AND It is absolutely understandable why most might think this is so, but it’s simply not true as every game that looks like it might have similar shared roots, like volleyball and basketball etc we’re invent many years (even decades) later after AFL . To start of, it’s 15 metres “before” your required to bounce the ball, it’s just been rounded to 16 yards for the American audience, for which the first typical video most get to see was created. Also, you don’t just have to bounce it, you can alternatively bend down whilst running, and touch the ball to the ground as well (although rarely seen nowadays). The MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground) holds over 100,000 people, not 90,000. I know the Vid said 90,000 plus, but this implies a lower true figure, so it’s a poor choice of words. They play on Cricket pitches, hence the round oval shape, and since cricket pitches are different sizes, there is no standard pitch size, so any figures that will get quoted, are only average estimates. The 20 minute quarters can have 10 additional minutes PER quarter, not 10 minutes for the whole game. This is a truly 360 degree game, so when they say no offside rule, it’s a massive understatement that you will only understand after watching a few minutes of continuous play. And you can get hit from Any direction at all. And what isn’t mentioned at all, is that their is absolutely no “Time Outs” of any description at all, for eg. if a player is injured, the game still continues on around him without stopping. The only exception to this is if he needs to be stretchered of, other wise the play goes on as the injured player walks off, there is video on RUclips with players with clearly broken arms, walking off. This 1st video is an updated version, that fixes most (but not all the) issues and omissions in the Americanised version of the video most people see first. We had a high number of Irish and Scottish colonisers and convicts and they both had a form of football.. a quick google will tell you that gaelic football was 'codified' in the 1800s but the history of Irish football goes back to the 13th century. If you watch Gaelic football there are some similarities with Aussie rules. in fact i LOVE Gaelic football.. not a rugby fan.. thats just a bunch of blokes in a scrum sticking their head up each others backsides..

Aussie rules was invented to keep cricket players fit during winter. It also gave them injuries they never would have received playing cricket. The inventors of the game were inspired by watching local aborigines kicking a stuffed possum hide around. It is even played in Iceland..... by locals, but only during summer (probably). Corrupt as it gets, the normal Australia works 38H+ while the AFL trains every other day for a few hour's. If We get permanently injured it's fight for your rights pay for everything with a deducted pay if any! with no help and very little money to live a quality life. They hurt themselves permanently or even slightly, they get all the help in the world, pay for nothing and get million dollar plus payouts with a regular pay! How's that far? Unlike other games, a team's goal is the goal they attck, not the goal they defend. This shows a positive attitude towards scroring, not a defensive attitude.
WTF? Every popular ball game involving scoring goals requires the attacking team to overcome their opponent's defensive players, no such game involves a team scoring through the goal they defend as that'd be just utterly nonsensical. In any successful AFL team, defence is just as high a priority as offence.

It's a game for the whole family. Adults and kids are in the stands. Because it is such a high scoring game it doesn't have the tension and violence of soccer fans. Most of the rules for tackling are to prevent injury. Best game in the world.
Big contrast to the edge-of-the-seat, thrilling "Nil-all Draws" of soccer, where the fans have to resort to burning down the stands or belting the living suitcase out of one another to keep themselves awake; or the bloodthirsty cross-country wrestling of Thugby.
Hi Amanda, Thank you checking out our game of Aussie football - my town of Melbourne is absolutely mad about AFL; so is Adelaide and Perth. AFL was made from combining rugby and Irish gaelic football. Interestingly, there is another version of football called international rules and it is combining AFL and gaelic football and played only between Ireland and Australia. My favourite team is the Essendon Bombers - we are the black jumper with the red sash across it, as you saw a couple of times in the video. To clarify the 16 yard rule; you can run but bounce it up to every 15 metres. Otherwise, yes, the ball gets turned over to the other team. For future videos, do check out the best marks (speccies!), best goals or best hits and bumps if that's more your thing. There is an updated introductory video which imo is better narrated by Australians. There is another beginner video narrated by an Englishman which is pretty good but comes from the point of view of England and soccer. We love the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground) as much as the Brits love Wembley. Love the roar of the crowd during a big match esp. if the game is close. Hopefully the UK or US can take interest in our game, learn it, play it and one day can beat Australia at our own game lol....
My nephew 6' 8" Bradon Preuss is a ruckman (center) for the Sydney giants. They need to be the biggest as ruck injuries are common and savage. He has had more time off than on due to countless reconstuctive surgeries. By 30 they are usually due for retirement.
The game is growing all over the world at amature level , both men and womens teams. There are teams in the UK , India , US , everywhere really . Its fantastic for fitness , highly skilled and just plain fun .

"Bounce every 16 yards" is a conversion of 15 metres for American audiences. You're not allowed to pickup the ball and just run down the field with it like rugby. It's a bit like the "traveling" rule in basketball. This is a subjective interpretation by the field umpires and the crowd usually lets them know if they feel the rule has been violated! Yes it becomes a free kick to the other team. There are other great AFL videos like hardest hits (not all of which were legal - some resulting in suspensions etc!) and best marks.
Ya gotta be toughest as nails to play AFL. There's nowhere to hide and when it's your turn to take a hit you have step up , it's not negotiable. The courage it takes to play can never be understated and that's in all levels from under 9's junior comps to the highest level , AFL. Keep watching a few Videos and you'll pick it up pretty quick.

The MCG used to be the hallowed turf of cricket, no footy allowed, they played football on a ground next door, the members grandstand was on tram tracks and they’d turn it around to face the opposite way with tractors in the 1800’s depending on the season, the tracks are still there too in the carpark at the Ponsford stand end
What are the dimensions of the AFL grounds? ^ For senior football, the playing field is an oval between 135-185 metres (148-202 yd) long goal-to-goal and 110-155 metres (120-170 yd) wide wing-to-wing. Grounds can vary from long and narrow to almost circular, and are not necessarily symmetrical, depending upon how and where the field was constructed.
The scoring is taken from playing cricket scoring and maths tables it's been around for nearly 200 in Australia, and yes there can be injuries but not often.
Yes AFL is a great game. No real stoppages of play except where a goal is scored and that’s only 30 seconds where the ball is competed in the centre of the ground and injuries where a player may be in danger (of further injury). There are now 23 minor round games not 22. Teams have 23 players now with a substitute with the purpose of using in the case of injury .A player can be substituted for any reason though to match the style of game on the day. Players can be interchanged up to 90 times during a game. 18 players on the ground and 5 on the bench. After watching a few highlight packages of great goals and great marks, you’ll see why so many consider it to be the best game in the world. Other highlight packages to watch are Cyril Rioli, Buddy Franklin and Eddy Betts. Amazing goals and marks.
The game basicly designed that the ball is kept in motion, hence running and bouncing. It's showing the umpires, you are in full control of the ball, rather than just holding it and running
What makes the game very interesting is the oval shape of the football which can randomly bounce in any direction. So, the players are on high alert throughout the game. Aussie footy takes inspiration from the Australian indigenous peoples' game of 'marn grook' which is possibly thousands of years old.
You must see this game live to fully appreciate it & go with someone that can explain the rules. It will make for a much more enjoyable experience. Something you will never forget especially if it is a close scoring game.
A question a lot of new folks have is the score card layout. It's goals, behinds, total score. So 20 10 130 is 20 goals at 6 points each, plus 10 behinds at 1 point each, all for a total of 130 points. The reason this is important is it can show you that someone who is losing in total points, might have actually had more kicks at goal, but for assorted reasons they've only gone through for 1 point instead of 6. So they may have more aggressively field positions but are being kept out by a desperate defence. Or possibly they're being forced to kick early so are going for the riskier shots. Or maybe their backs and midfielders are carrying the team and the forwards suck. 😅. Lots of possibilities, but the score format gives you a bit more information about the state of play than just the running total would.
The bounce while running with the ball prevents a player just carrying the ball. If the player forgets to bounce the ball, then it is handed over to the other team.

Rugby players are definitely more solid and hit harder on average. The difference is that in Aussie rules it’s a 360 degree game and you don’t always see the opponent coming to hit you, or you may have multiple players coming at you from different angles. A background in basketball is often helpful because it helps give you the 360 degree awareness.
You should watch the more up to date version which shows the female games as well, its also got a better voice over i think. Also its also played in the USA which has its own multistate league. Footy only looks like a mix of different mix of sports but was invented before all of them!
Even the game at local level is hard and tough and played by all ages including Masters (Over 35 or 45). I had a head clash playing over 45s and ended up with 9 stitches just above my eye. It is the best game in the world and so much better watching it live in the stands!
I've been to the Gabba during a home game for the Brisbane Lions. It was an absolutely insane experience; Sitting amongst 100,000 screaming fans, you can't help but start screaming too; Swept up in the electric atmosphere.
Have had over 100,000 fans at many Grand Finals. Noting like going to a game at the MCG when there are 80,000 people cheering for their teams. You should watch a game.
AFL is fantastic. If you want fantastic games to start with I’d watch 2023 Grand Final. Another would be 2018 Grand Final where West Coast Eagles came from about 6 goals down. BTW AFL is older than most sports played in USA. Cricket players came up with it to keep fit in the winter. Oh and if you haven’t watched cricket I suggest you start with T20.

AWFUL is fully subsidised by the AFL, because it can't even attract sufficient patrons to fund itself and results in players having to retrieve the ball whenever it goes over the fence. Female players can't kick the ball 60 yards, they play with a smaller ball on smaller grounds and are lucky if they even manage to score a goal in each quarter. AFLW is AWFUL.

Yes many games share aspects of this game. Tennis is way older though, about 1650 Clerge the elder I think was the first world champion (Will Cam reign longer than the Bag man at the top of Tennis? Don't think so).

The pace is similar to ice hockey. Substitutions are made on the fly, the game does'nt stop for player interchange unless its a severe injury. Greatest game on the planet!

The AFL players have played since they were young. So the stamina is developed for the game from a very young age so many Australian children are fit and enjoy their local sports.

This keeps the ball in play, like the option to "play on" after a "mark, or take the awarded kick. It is not supposed to be rugby, nor basketball (ever tried "bouncing an oval football while running on grass or dirt?). It is a full on contact sport for the hardy, but not one in which you can cripple an opponent for life, like tackling below the knees in rugby or slamming like "grid iron" football. Watch a full game you whining prick.

AFL was codified years before soccer, rugby and American football. The average player is 6'2''. They run, on average, 9 to 12 miles per game. They are probably the fittest and the best conditioned athletes playing any football type game.
The game is hard, aggressive and can get violent but has been cleaned up over the last 10 or 15 years.
See some you tube videos on 'AFL hardest hits'. 'AFL best marks' (that is a clean catch of the ball...very spectacular) and AFL best goals' (IE best scoring shots). For a look at the game before it was cleaned up try "AFL hardest enforcers' or 'AFL - a line in the sand'. And it really did need to be cleaned up. For an American perspective an American basketballer, Mason Cox has been playing the game for 7 or 8 years now. Pat McAfee, an ex NFL punter interviews him on his You Tube channel

In an arena much bigger than the Colosseum, up to 100, 000 spectators. The extreme speed of movement and contact requires four field umpires to rule over the game. Crowds watching the games dare not look away for fear of missing some spectacular feat of athleticism.

AFL players performed the best in tests of speed and stamina, ahead of soccer players, with rugby players lagging far behind. Rugby players performed better in tests of sheer strength, ahead of AFL players with soccer players well behind.

G’day there. I’m glad your enjoying our game, but I should point out that the first “rules” video is unfortunately full of inaccuracies and omissions, and that’s odd since it was the Australian AFL ruling body that commissioned it.
The very first thing to be addressed, is that this game is NOT a mix of other games.
And unlike a lot of American viewers (naturally and understandably) assume, this game has absolutely no historical link whatsoever to gridiron.
As mentioned elsewhere, it was invented years before gridiron, and there was also very little cultural contact between Australia and the USA before WW2. AND It is absolutely understandable why most might think this is so, but it’s simply not true as every game that looks like it might have similar shared roots, like volleyball and basketball etc we’re invent many years (even decades) later after AFL .
To start of, it’s 15 metres “before” your required to bounce the ball, it’s just been rounded to 16 yards for the American audience, for which the first typical video most get to see was created. Also, you don’t just have to bounce it, you can alternatively bend down whilst running, and touch the ball to the ground as well (although rarely seen nowadays).
The MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground) holds over 100,000 people, not 90,000. I know the Vid said 90,000 plus, but this implies a lower true figure, so it’s a poor choice of words.
They play on Cricket pitches, hence the round oval shape, and since cricket pitches are different sizes, there is no standard pitch size, so any figures that will get quoted, are only average estimates.
The 20 minute quarters can have 10 additional minutes PER quarter, not 10 minutes for the whole game.
This is a truly 360 degree game, so when they say no offside rule, it’s a massive understatement that you will only understand after watching a few minutes of continuous play. And you can get hit from Any direction at all.
And what isn’t mentioned at all, is that their is absolutely no “Time Outs” of any description at all, for eg. if a player is injured, the game still continues on around him without stopping.
The only exception to this is if he needs to be stretchered of, other wise the play goes on as the injured player walks off, there is video on RUclips with players with clearly broken arms, walking off.
This 1st video is an updated version, that fixes most (but not all the) issues and omissions in the Americanised version of the video most people see first. (To be clear, the errors are our fault, i.e. us Aussies, as it was the AFL who wrote the script to help educate US citizens).

This milestone has only happened 5 times previously in the 150 year plus history of this game. That’s why the crowd reacted the way they did. The anticipation for this moment was absolutely huge all game.

What’s now known as Australian Rules, is indeed the first game to have a “standardised” set of “codified” rules of any football code.
Another point of interest is that the Australian Aborigines have a PROVEN historical ability to remember and pass on their stories. So to go of track ever so slightly, it’s been discovered that they have racial memories (stories that are passed down over time) that actually date back to before the last ice age. To be fair (and clear), just about every game ever invented, basically starts of without written rules. This is especially true of soccer as it’s history dates back to the Middle Ages. Therefore various games (of all sorts) have evolved over time, this is a universal constant.
It’s just that Australian Football was specifically created for a very specific purpose right from the very beginning, and so setting out rules was an automatic imperative right from the start. Neither the early forms of soccer or rugby (or any other type of game) had this type of need in their early days.
Australia (Victoria to be more specific) was the First Nation to have a 8 hour work day 40 hour work week. So we had Saturday free to play sport, before other countries, this has been postulated as another reason why it was easy for us to create a game in the fashion that we did, and why it was taken up so quickly.
What translates to AFL, is the consolidated components of pre Codified Soccer/football, pre codified Rugby, Marngrook etc, as well as some other unique aspects of his own too (like bouncing/touching the ball to the ground), that was then all mixed up and combined into our very own game which we happened to write some rules down before anyone else got around to it.
To put it simply, No one has ever denied the fact that AFL is made up of early forms of other football style of games with our own bits added as well.
But having said that. AFL actually predates Soccer, Rugby, Gridiron, Basketball, Volleyball etc.
So it’s not actually accurate to say that it’s a mix of other sports, as that implies that AFL copied those aspects and that they came first, but to be fair, it is also entirely understandable why that assumption is constantly made.

I will start of with what was a pop song in the 70’s but has become the main AFL theme song (their are others). What makes this video specifically interesting was that it was before a lot of the rules to make it a safer game, had been made. It has some spectacular footage. (Just the 5 secs from 0:30 to 0:35, prove this point).
And BTW Roy Cazaly was the name of a famous player that could jump, hence the cry “ Up their Cazaly” and thus the title for the song.

We had a high number of Irish and Scottish colonisers and convicts and they both had a form of football.. a quick google will tell you that gaelic football was 'codified' in the 1800s but the history of Irish football goes back to the 13th century. If you watch Gaelic football there are some similarities with Aussie rules. in fact i LOVE Gaelic football.. not a rugby fan.. thats just a bunch of blokes in a scrum sticking their head up each others backsides..

Corrupt as it gets, the normal Australia works 38H+ while the AFL trains every other day for a few hour's.
If We get permanently injured it's fight for your rights pay for everything with a deducted pay if any! with no help and very little money to live a quality life.
They hurt themselves permanently or even slightly, they get all the help in the world, pay for nothing and get million dollar plus payouts with a regular pay!
How's that far? Or even legal for that latter! Especially when it's partly supported by the government...

When a government or employer turns its back on an injured soldier ......that is corruption.
When a WORKER fakes an injury and claims compensation.....that is corruption.

But when a professional sportsman or woman is injured, and they are looked after and the contract is honoured, THAT is justice.
Unlike other games, a team's goal is the goal they attck, not the goal they defend. This shows a positive attitude towards scroring, not a defensive attitude.

WTF? Every popular ball game involving scoring goals requires the attacking team to overcome their opponent's defensive players, no such game involves a team scoring through the goal they defend as that'd be just utterly nonsensical. In any successful AFL team, defence is just as high a priority as offence.

It's a game for the whole family. Adults and kids are in the stands. Because it is such a high scoring game it doesn't have the tension and violence of soccer fans. Most of the rules for tackling are to prevent injury. Best game in the world.
Big contrast to the edge-of-the-seat, thrilling "Nil-all Draws" of soccer, where the fans have to resort to burning down the stands or belting the living suitcase out of one another to keep themselves awake; or the bloodthirsty cross-country wrestling of Thugby.

Thank you checking out our game of Aussie football - my town of Melbourne is absolutely mad about AFL; so is Adelaide and Perth.
AFL was made from combining rugby and Irish gaelic football. Interestingly, there is another version of football called international rules and it is combining AFL and gaelic football and played only between Ireland and Australia.
My favourite team is the Essendon Bombers - we are the black jumper with the red sash across it, as you saw a couple of times in the video.
To clarify the 16 yard rule; you can run but bounce it up to every 15 metres. Otherwise, yes, the ball gets turned over to the other team.
For future videos, do check out the best marks (speccies!), best goals or best hits and bumps if that's more your thing. There is an updated introductory video which imo is better narrated by Australians. There is another beginner video narrated by an Englishman which is pretty good but comes from the point of view of England and soccer.
We love the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground) as much as the Brits love Wembley. Love the roar of the crowd during a big match esp. if the game is close. Hopefully the UK or US can take interest in our game, learn it, play it and one day can beat Australia at our own game lol....

Aussie Rules has nothing to do with Gaelic football.
There are similarities but they developed entirely independently.

My nephew 6' 8" Bradon Preuss is a ruckman (center) for the Sydney giants. They need to be the biggest as ruck injuries are common and savage. He has had more time off than on due to countless reconstuctive surgeries. By 30 they are usually due for retirement.
You need to see it live! To really appreciate it.
The game is growing all over the world at amature level , both men and womens teams. There are teams in the UK , India , US , everywhere really . Its fantastic for fitness , highly skilled and just plain fun .
And you look at what Americans wear on their football fields. These Ausies guys are nuts. It’s like hockey on grass.

For some real excitement see the 2023 Grand Final highlights on the AFL site. Maybe the best ever and goes right to the wire. (I'm biased, without giving anything away) It's not long to watch and gives a great feel for the flow of a game. There is a women's league now as well.

Ha! The 1989 Grand Final is universally recognised as the greatest Grand Final of the modern era by a country mile.
Each team has 18 players on the field at one time, they interchange throughout the game with the 4 players on the interchange bench.

It was even crossed over with Gaelic styles of play from Irish teams.
Aussie Rules started in the 1850s from the Australian aboriginals called marngrook. Then it evolved. Soccer basketball rugby were decades later.
Its one of the oldest football codes. Rugby might be slightly older. The MCG holds over 100,000 not 90,000.
“Codified” is the key. Aussie rules was codified into competing leagues before rugby and other sports.
"Bounce every 16 yards" is a conversion of 15 metres for American audiences. You're not allowed to pickup the ball and just run down the field with it like rugby. It's a bit like the "traveling" rule in basketball. This is a subjective interpretation by the field umpires and the crowd usually lets them know if they feel the rule has been violated! Yes it becomes a free kick to the other team. There are other great AFL videos like hardest hits (not all of which were legal - some resulting in suspensions etc!) and best marks.

Ya gotta be toughest as nails to play AFL. There's nowhere to hide and when it's your turn to take a hit you have step up , it's not negotiable. The courage it takes to play can never be understated and that's in all levels from under 9's junior comps to the highest level , AFL. Keep watching a few Videos and you'll pick it up pretty quick.

You should feel the atmosphere at one of these games. Better than English football, i used to go the Notts County and Forest games all the time.
The MCG used to be the hallowed turf of cricket, no footy allowed, they played football on a ground next door, the members grandstand was on tram tracks and they’d turn it around to face the opposite way with tractors in the 1800’s depending on the season, the tracks are still there too in the carpark at the Ponsford stand end

Yes AFL is a great game. No real stoppages of play except where a goal is scored and that’s only 30 seconds where the ball is competed in the centre of the ground and injuries where a player may be in danger (of further injury).
There are now 23 minor round games not 22. Teams have 23 players now with a substitute with the purpose of using in the case of injury .A player can be substituted for any reason though to match the style of game on the day.
Players can be interchanged up to 90 times during a game. 18 players on the ground and 5 on the bench.
After watching a few highlight packages of great goals and great marks, you’ll see why so many consider it to be the best game in the world.

The game basicly designed that the ball is kept in motion, hence running and bouncing. It's showing the umpires, you are in full control of the ball, rather than just holding it and running

What makes the game very interesting is the oval shape of the football which can randomly bounce in any direction. So, the players are on high alert throughout the game. Aussie footy takes inspiration from the Australian indigenous peoples' game of 'marn grook' which is possibly thousands of years old.

You must see this game live to fully appreciate it & go with someone that can explain the rules. It will make for a much more enjoyable experience. Something you will never forget especially if it is a close scoring game.
A question a lot of new folks have is the score card layout. It's goals, behinds, total score. So 20 10 130 is 20 goals at 6 points each, plus 10 behinds at 1 point each, all for a total of 130 points. The reason this is important is it can show you that someone who is losing in total points, might have actually had more kicks at goal, but for assorted reasons they've only gone through for 1 point instead of 6. So they may have more aggressively field positions but are being kept out by a desperate defence. Or possibly they're being forced to kick early so are going for the riskier shots. Or maybe their backs and midfielders are carrying the team and the forwards suck. 😅. Lots of possibilities, but the score format gives you a bit more information about the state of play than just the running total would.

There is Gaelic players who have played AFL before. It's very similar but more contact.
They do a hybrid game called international rules
The bounce while running with the ball prevents a player just carrying the ball. If the player forgets to bounce the ball, then it is handed over to the other team.

We live 3 hours away from the city, and went last weekend to watch a match with 40,000 others. The atmosphere is always amazing (especially when you're watching the Black & White - Collingwood football club! 😉).
Unlike 99% of non Pies supporters, I actually like Collingwood, even though I'm a life time Hawks supporter.

AFL is a mixture of Rugby league, American football and Basketball. It can get very heated. I remember seeing a match on TV, when I was staying in 🇦🇺
Those 3 sports were invented decades after Australian Football, and those involved likely did not know if the existence of Aussie Rules

AFL makes rugby seem almost gentle by comparison.
I learned something from the video, and it helped me to demystify Aussie rules footie a little.
Rugby players are definitely more solid and hit harder on average.
The difference is that in Aussie rules it’s a 360 degree game and you don’t always see the opponent coming to hit you, or you may have multiple players coming at you from different angles.
A background in basketball is often helpful because it helps give you the 360 degree awareness.

Even the game at local level is hard and tough and played by all ages including Masters (Over 35 or 45). I had a head clash playing over 45s and ended up with 9 stitches just above my eye. It is the best game in the world and so much better watching it live in the stands!
I've been to the Gabba during a home game for the Brisbane Lions. It was an absolutely insane experience; Sitting amongst 100,000 screaming fans, you can't help but start screaming too; Swept up in the electric atmosphere.
Have had over 100,000 fans at many Grand Finals. Noting like going to a game at the MCG when there are 80,000 people cheering for their teams. You should watch a game.

AFLW or womens AFL is a flop, the grounds are too big for them they cant kick as far as men
AWFUL is fully subsidised by the AFL, because it can't even attract sufficient patrons to fund itself and results in players having to retrieve the ball whenever it goes over the fence. Female players can't kick the ball 60 yards, they play with a smaller ball on smaller grounds and are lucky if they even manage to score a goal in each quarter. AFLW is AWFUL.
That stadium now holds just over 100 000 people. AFL is older than all the other sports you mentioned.
