Saying "Shrimp on the barbie" will get you an eye roll at the very least. This video is a bit old. Our population is 27 million, so yes very low. Min wage is now $24.10 an hour. So no the wait staff do not need a tip, they are well paid. Public transport is okay in the cities.
with the cost, tourist areas are very expensive, most Aussies only eat out once or twice a week. Tipping is not required at all in Australia. Most Aussies only insult their close friends not normally strangers.
My daughter was warned against going off the path in New York - and there were no signs warning people not to enter certain areas. Add the tip to US prices and they will be much closer.
On illegal immigration. Australia has a very generous refugee programme but not if you attempt to enter the country illegally. You only have to see the disaster that illegal immigration can cause a country both economically and socially by looking at the US and Europe.
I dunno. You guys have bears and mountain lions. You can EASILY flee from a snake or spider. Hell, the spiders don't move. And I avoided the only brown snake I've seen by literally jumping over it. But I can't do that with a mountain lion or bear. Those are straight up BEASTS. Also, crocs aren't an issue. They're concentrated to certain parts of the country. I've never seen one in the wild. ALSO ALSO, the cost of living is pretty high. But we also make a lot more money. A beer might be 9 dollars (in the major cities anyway), but minimum wage is also like 27 bucks and hour. Even with the currency exchange, it is a lot more than people in the US make. And a good chunk of people including myself make more than minimum wage. Cost of living has increased, but I also live a pretty comfortable life with a wife and 2 kids.
So basically, don't listen to an American trying to tell you about Australia. It's a lot more complex than what you watched. That being said, I can assure you, you'll be very welcomed here and you'll love the attention for being 'exotic'. I had that in Scandinavia as an Aussie, and it's an awesome feeling!
Really? More people get killed in America by bears, wolves, big wild cats, moose, rattle snakes etc. than people get killed by wildlife here. It is extremely rare and blown way out of proportion.
Australia is not dangerous. I've never been bitten by a snake because I have never tried to pick on up or kill one (that's how most people get bitten). Leave them alone and they will leave you alone. Up North, stay away from the water's edge in coastal areas, most towns and city areas provide safe swimming areas, so you don't have to compete with killers to have an enjoyable swim. Always check your shoes, I've been bitten twice by spiders by not following my own advice, (that is my own fault) But most tourist coming to Australia get into trouble swimming at unpatrolled beaches, the beaches and surf look great but can be treacherous at times. So, swim between the flags.
If you come here to Oz you will have a blast trust me BUT it’s all about commonsense, if you’re not sure ask. People will help you to get around and explain things to you so as you understand what we’re about and how big this country is ( about the same size as the United States ) so travelling is possible around cities but you’ll need a car to go country or fly from one city to another or if you make friends they would probably drive you on day trips. Do a lot of research first of what you would like to see and do. The wild and poisonous animals and things won’t even go near you as they’re more scared of humans than we are of them.
You pay what the bill says, no extra taxes, no tip. Australia is about the same size as the 49 states. Research what you want to see the most, and restrict your itinerary to a specific part of the country. In general, the wildlife is interested in fleeing from you. EXCEPTIONS!!!! Sharks, Crocodiles and marine stingers. If in doubt, stay with the crowd, or ask a local. Lastly, if you can not afford travel insurance, you can not afford to travel. 99.99% certain, you will enjoy it.
These kind of videos that talk about "what not to do..." or "rules of Australia" make me laugh with how wrong they are. I'm an Aussie and... 1. I often stray from the path - never been bitten by anything dangerous or venomous yet.... and a large portion of Australia has ZERO crocodiles (except maybe in zoos). 2. It's not cheap, but not that different to anywhere else, right now we're in a cost of living crisis the same as the rest of the world, and for the same reason, covid. 3. Yes, we don't say shrimp on a barbie, but nobody is going to get upset if you do say it, we'll know you're a tourist and it's fine. 4. Don't drink and drive, well isn't that a rule in most countries???? Driving drunk isn't a good idea no matter where you are. Yeah, nobody drinks Fosters, but again nobody is going to be upset if you ask for one, we'll realise you're a tourist. 5. True. 6. No tipping is right, you can if you want, but nobody is going to blame you if you don't because its not common. 7. Public transport, even in cities, is often crap and won't get you to lots of places. If you travel here, find some friends here to help you get around, or hire a car. Never go out in the "Outback" unless you are fully prepared, tourists and even Aussies can easily get lost, and the desert is hot hot hot. 8. You can talk about immigration if you want, I don't see why anybody here would get upset over it, but its a boring subject to be discussing when you're sight seeing, right??? 9. One of the few true facts on the list, we do joke around and take the "piss" out of anyone and anything, but most likely people will realise you're tourists and not say anything that's likely to offend. 10. Yeah, don't be afraid to say hello, but just know that Australia is no different to any other country, some people are nice, some people aren't. 11. Yeah, enjoy Australia if you do come, and stop letting people scare you with the whole dangerous/poisonous animals thing, its extremely overblown. I'm 52, and as I said at the top I've never been bitten by anything yet. I've seen plenty of spiders, snakes, and other animals, they aren't a problem as long as you use some common sense, ie if you see a snake leave it alone. Snakes in Australia don't see humans as a source of food, so they don't want to eat you, they just want to keep away from you.
I'm a 73 yo Aussie who has seen one snake in 50 years...poisonous critters are more scared of you than vice versa....vlogs like this sometimes do more harm than good...Australia is safe unless you go to the tropics but even then it's safe.
I absolutely recommend watch the first two Crocodile Dundee movies. The two lead actors Paul Hogan and Linda Kozlowski fell in love during the taping and got married in real life. Awesome movies. Huge in the 80's. Led to Paul Hogan co-hosting the Oscars in 1987 with Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn. In regard to the shrimp on the barbie thing, know this Australians are VERY outspoken and will always say something. The only time we won't is if something or someone is so unimportant to us that we literally don't care anymore.
to add to my lower statement You Girls are very naive, you will get taken down easily, so add suspicion to your agenda. Aussie girls are far more mature mentally, learn from them! I am an oldie with experience have to look after you .
Girls don’t fall for the all the rubbish about Australia being full of dangerous animals. My wife and I used to do lots of multi day hikes camping out each night and often off track. However we would never do that in the US. Why? You have bears and mountain lions. We don’t have any animals that will rip your tent apart and eat you….you do. Come to Australia….you’ll be perfectly safe.

Good inexpensive food just outside the city. Pub counter meals are great.(18 age for pubs)
