161 laps of pure excitement !! Love Bathurst and no one, and I mean no one can get you more ready for the race or more pumped up then the legend Larko on this video 💯👍
I live in Bathurst and for a week in October the race vibe takes over the place. The rest of the year the track is a two way public road with a 60k speed limit and frequent Highway Patrol visits to curb some visitors’ enthusiasm. I have to say that taking the esses at the speed limit in my ute is challenging. I usually take any first time visitors for a lap around the track and point out my home from the top of the mountain. The whole race is broadcast and the viewing experience is enhanced because I can hear the actual race from my place. I think most of the town can.
It crazy how the town goes from rural county to full on race car mode. My entire family are down that. Bathurst, Forbes, Parks, Dubbo and Orange Way too cold for me.
Mark Larkham was a Formula Ford and Touring Car/V8 Supercar driver and team owner. He retired from driving many years ago, but he is also a great commentator. He is the on-air technical guru for the TV coverage of the sport.
And a crazy bit of recent history with Larko is the sport was going to drop him as they thought they no longer required his technical analysis on air. When the fans found out about that there was an uproar as everyone loves him. The higher up's elected to keep him around after that. No body explains the technical side of these cars better than Mark "Larko" Larkham
there is a terrific video you can watch of Peter Brock talking to the TV audience whilst in the middle of a race. This race is why the in car camera was invented and developed in Australia.
Another recommendation is the Greg Murphy, from New Zealand, 'Lap of the Gods' when he did what is considered as one of the best single qualifying laps of all time at Bathurst.
Yep. I remember that lap too. I'm a Ford die hard through and through and was *religiously* Ford back in those days - but even I have to pay respect to that lap. That was absolutely unreal with the cars at that time.
Kevin and anybody else if you want to see what Australia really looks like and the huge distances between places then I suggest you watch the One Pack Wanders vlogs with two young Americans doing a road trip lap around Australia with a lot of spectacular scenery and drone shots. They start at Perth for 3 days and then realize they need a car [ episode 3] and then they are off and driving. I think you might get hooked like a lot of people already have. So, Kevin watch and enjoy your in for a real treat.
Yes, i second this, they are a beautiful couple, and produced a fantastic series of travelling Australia videos the shows you don't need the full on touring set-up, just a Mazda 3 a tent and a desire to explore, cheers
Thirded. Just coming to a close now but it's been a great journey with the 'Wanderers'. Another one worth looking at is "@Rhys and Missy". Great energy from these two.
As an Aussie growing up watching this every year. It just becomes second nature to watch Bathurst in October. If you can't make it to the mountain to watch it live. You throw a Bathurst party invite your friends around and watch it together.
Sadly, the shine has gone off for me. Since I was very young I have been glued to the tv to watch Bathurst that iconic weekend in October. While still a great race I no longer spend 6-8 uninterrupted hours watching. I’m neither a Ford nor GM (Holden) fan. I don’t really like the latest Mustangs and Camaros aren’t Australian but, sure, that had to do something with the demise of Holden. I sed they’re letting Toyota back in for variety. My favorite days were more in the multi make production car era so non GM/Ford fans could identify. I’m tending to favour the 12 hour these days…..and Bathurst remains the common factor
@@reborndiajack9612Rubbish. Work places around the country stop to listen and a lot of offices have themed parties during the entire afternoon. And it is a public holiday in the state of Victoria. Not comparing car v horse racing. Two unrelated disciplines but am not a fan of people spreading lies.
This is a fantastic introduction to Bathurst. A step by step corner by corner breakdown of one of the most physically demanding race tracks in the world. This is the sort of intense focus you need for one lap.......... Imagine doing it for 161laps....... 1000km for 6 hours straight. Another thing to look for is POV laps they give you so much more understanding of the elevation. Mark Larkham was a winner of this race and one of the nicest people in racing in the V8 supercars league. Another great video to watch Darryl Waltrip does a lap in the passenger seat and it scares him legitimately, he can not believe that the cars can do it. The next Bathurst 1000 is the 10 - 13th of October these dates include shootouts, qualifications and other races with the main event on the 13th.
Bathurst 1000 is a race on a public road, hence the grate at the top for drainage. You have 2 drivers that do 161 laps that lasts between 5.5 to 6 hrs. This is a week long pilgrimage for teams and fans alike.
Larko's technical talks are some of the best in Australian motor racing. I just love them. The Bathurst 1000, is a race of Skill, Luck and engineering excellence, with an acknowledgement to bucket loads of money. I even remember one year, one of race leaders had to fold because of fatigue.
I used to enjoy Bathurst back when it was multiple classes all on track together. Everything from mini cooper's, cortina's, jag's, even bleedin' Volvo's all the way through to the V8 "muscle cars. Something for everyone. You'd see a big V8 run away up the mountain and back down, but the coopers would reign them in on the top and around the curves. You would truly see makes and models that you could buy on Monday, racing on that Sunday. As a young mechanic (started my apprenticeship in 1977) it was food for my passion. It's heart and soul diminished when the so called "supercars" (superboring") are the only class running, a boring parody of what Bathurst was. Vehicles all built to the same formula, just like a NASCAR event on a mountainside with some opposite corners thrown in.
I agree it is boring now they should go back to the touring car days. I think part of the reason for the "supercars" was that the local production Fords and Holdens were getting beaten by the international cars like BMW Jaguar British Fords and Nissans.
I remember when the riot on the mountain happened. Cops nearly scalped my mum by running over her while we were sleeping ...on PRIVATE PROPERTY...... With a shitload of bikers! Anyone else remember that?
Another suggestion is the video "The Greatest Motor Race EVER" by Josh Revell. It covers the 2014 race, which had drama, heartache, triumph and tragedy in spades.
It is a public road. Almost every other day of the year, it's just treated as a nice drive for everyone. The race used to be Production Cars. There was a saying here in Australia "Race it Sunday, buy it from showroom on Monday". We could just buy the exact spec car as raced on Sunday. Bathurst is on once a year and is special. It is the only race I will cancel everything to watch from start to finish.
It’s actually rarely open to the public anymore. There’s events constantly throughout the year and is virtually a dedicated racetrack these days. The properties have alternative access.
The last few years I've been booking an annual leave day for the Monday after the race because I'm so tired from a full weekend of watching Bathurst that I need the extra day to rest before going back to work.
Hi Kevin...this video needs to be watched intently otherwise you may miss what this ex-Bathurst driver is describing, knowing that one lap has to be repeated 161 times. Have a look at other Bathurst drivers such as Peter Brock who beat the mountain several times.. 🤗👍
Fun fact...I was at The race (1980) when Dick Johnson hit the rock and catapulted him into the spotlight ( and Bathurst). In those days, we camped on the mountain top..lots of us...and local farmers would bring in supplies via their tractors. Toilets? Let's not go there 😅. Remains one of my most treasured memories. Ps...im a 70 yr old gran now.
I am with you , we would drive all night to get to the track on Saturday morning with 2 or 3 or 4 cars one of them a ute full of beer to watch what was then a great race with production cars ranging from mini minors holdens fords and almost any car that you could buy and the drivers ranged from profesional to sunday , made for great racing . we camped on the hill and the only food you could buy was pies and pasties from the apex shop . As you said the toilets were "different" ,they consisted of a long pit with dunnies built over the top . I remember one year somebody poured petrol down the hole and when somebody else threw his cigarete but in ???? all I can say is that nobody got hurt but there were some horrible sights staggering around . Just a great bloody weekend, not like todays micro managed event where EVERY thing is regulated from the ticket sales , the race , the food to the exiting of the venue .

I watch reactions to this clip all the time. Most people when they start watching, have a chat hit the pause button ask a question? But by the second corner the chat stops the pause button is forgotten. Then nothing but Larko's commentary, eyes widening and a mouth silently mouthing...."Faaaarrrrk"
Quite simply the greatest motor race every year! NASCAR and Indy drivers have been amazed at the skill of the drivers and the power of the cars! Great reaction. Make sure you watch this year's race!
I lived in Bathurst and my kids still do, I worked delivering food to the pits during the races and to the top of the mount. my son will be a pit lane marshal this year. The people who attend Bathurst are a special breed. They see it as a religion which worship 3 gods, Peter Brock , Holden & Ford V8 Supercars. Alas due to the collapse of Holden Motors we now have the Chev Camaro vs the Ford mustang. They build Tributes to their gods in the form of beer can pyramids I drove the track everyday for 8 years either for work or pleasure, every bump, every dip.. they are all imprinted. and I'm not ashamed to say when watching the race there was most definitely a tv in the bathroom so not a minute was missed. I cant wait to go this year.. only a couple weeks now.
It’s built around a mountain & its an every day road that anyone can drive on any day that is not closed to the public when the supercars round weekend is on ,24 hr race is on & Bathurst 1000 is on . Big week in for the Bathurst 1000 when the Supercars arrive they have a parade with all trucks carting the cars then the drivers parade. All drivers who are invited by teams around the world who come to the race say they never seen a track like it. All r exciting to try to drive it most are invited by teams & given a experience of being a passenger in a supercar around the track in car by a qualified driver of the team who invited them.
We have CORNERS. Who wants to see cars going round in circles for 2-4 hours when you can watch Bathurst for 6 hours. There were also motorbike races including the Bathurst 500 but changes to the course to suit cars meant the end for the bikes (in 2000 I believe?) The height of the track from the top of the mountain to the bottom is 174 metres or 570 feet. The track is a public road. I rode it on my Triumph Bonneville 650 in 1972 and it scared the shite out of me! Now you need to watch highlights of an actual race.
I am a Kiwi and Bathurst week end was (when my husband lived) no phone calls taken I would keep, him supplied with food and drink and towards the end I would join him just to see how the Kiwi boys were doing
Love the Kiwi bro's. I'm an Aussie but I love our fam across the ditch. I'm a big fan of Scotty Mac and loved it when he put the jandal on top of the Volvo. And of course Gizzy, and absolute master. AND then of course Murph, who still carries that 'Lap of the Gods' mantle.

Once upon a time, Australia had a car industry. Bathurst and Sandown 500 were races for production cars. Ford, GMH, Chrysler all had V8 models. Then, they would produce a small volume run of race production road vehicles, which were used for Sandown and Bathurst. The public could purchase them. Check out Ford Falcon GT HO, GM-Holden Monaro and Torana, Chrysler Valiant Charger, Pacer, etc. See Glen Everitt-Master of Machines videos, and his Ray Ikin collection video.

Goosebumps every time I watch Larko’s video. I make the trek to Bathurst every year and camp on top of the hill! 🙌🏽 the only way to get a real feel of this track is by doing a track walk. Whole new appreciation of this amazing place 😍
Kevin, hello from Australia. That’s Mark Larkin (Larko). He’s a former driver n team owner. Yeah Bathurst is kinda a religion but since Holden left the scene, it’s not the same red V blue. Mt Panorama also hosts a 12 hour event for GT3 cars. To watch Audi R8s, Aston Martins, Bentleys, Lamborghini Hauracans and Porsche 911 GT-Rs along with a few GT4 BMWs, Ginettas, Nissans start with a lap behind the pace car before dawn is a cracking experience.
Brilliant video on an iconic track. I drove around the track in reverse and it's bloody steep and surprisingly narrow with the concrete walls just off your mirrors. After the drive at 60kph you realise these race drivers are bloody heroes with no fear.

I have watched this video so many times it always gives me goosebumps and I love watching other people's reactions too it, larko paints the mountain with his words and expressions so magnificently, last year I had the pleasure of getting to do hot laps of the mountain in a very detuned version of these race cars and it was to die for, such a thrilling circuit ❤
I looked this up. "The track has an unusual design by modern standards, with a 174 m (571 ft) vertical difference between its highest and lowest points, and grades as steep as 1:6.13."
Fun Fact about Mark Larkham (the guy presenting the video): Supercars tried to fire him. They wanted to get rid of his segments and carry on without him. The fans protested and when absolutely nuts on social media... they ended up having to offer him is job back.

And it's a public road every other day of the year! Driving around it (speed limit is 60 km/hour) gives you a real appreciation of the elevation changes, that doesn't show up on TV.
Great reaction mate. Bathurst is only a few hours drive from Sydney and as you approach the town (if you're into motorsport), you can see the mountain and the hairs start to stand up. I"ve been fortunate to have been driven around this by a Porsche Cup driver back when I did a lot of motorsport photography on the mountain. Driving around it yourself (it's all public roads), you get a sense of how skilled these guys are. Across the top (around Skyline), it's very tight, blind corners and incredible elevation changes (and views). You have to go there if you have any fuel in your blood! Cheers from Sydney (the Aussie one) - Dave
I love seeing the look on people's faces watching this for the first time, its so good to see. Growing up in the 80s in Australia this was the biggest weekend of the year bigger than Christmas in most house holds. I must have watched this Mark Larkham video at least 20 times, and it still affects me every time. I've been watching Bathurst since 1970, and I would watch skateboards here, which apparently have run here in an Extreme Sports weekend
As this is a relatively old video, my comment has probably already been mentioned. Mt Panorama, Wahluu in the indigenous language, is 862m or 2828 feet in elevation and the track is 6.2km or 3.8 miles long. It's also a public road during no race periods, so you can drive around it. But stick to the speed limit, as police regularly patrol. As someone who lives not far from Bathurst, the local roads do get bust with people coming to the race, and many locals leave town for the race weekend :) I've volunteered there as part of the volunteer Rural Fire Service.
My Dad was a motorsport fan so growing up in Australia I was a motorsport fan! For many decades it was Ford vs Holden, the rivalry was huge and everyone watched it on tv. It was an institution in many households across the country. I have wonderful memories of watching Bathurst with my Dad every year. It is 161 laps and the circuit is approx 6.2kms making for a total race distance of approximately 1,000 kilometres. Hence the race name the Bathurst 1000.
Mate, you will LOVE watching Bathurst next month if you are a fellow petrolhead. Check out Rugby too, especially the All Blacks team from New Zealand, the winningest team in the history of any Internationally Played Country VS Country team sport. Having a rough season the last 3 weeks, a brand new coaching staff with the assistant coach quitting the other week citing 'Creative differences' with the Head Coach in his Rookie season. On average, we lose about 1 game a season against international teams, not bad for a 5 million population that we wup countries with 5 and 10 x the population. It is similar to Rugby League, the NRL game, yet much different.
There are about 10,000 videos of this race available to view. So good luck finding the gems and ignoring the crap.Lol.I've been down there a heap of times over the years and it's an exciting experience.
At 10:51. The grate is part of the normal road construction. Mount Panorama is just a public road, and a race track just for the couple of days of the race.
By the way, from the lowest point of the track at Murray's corner to the highest point of the track at Reed park is 180metres or 580 feet, and at places a 1 in 6 inclination, so they drive up and down the track all in 6.2km or 4 miles 161 times. I've walked the track last year for the first time, like many others have and you appreciate the track so much more when you physically see it live at ground level. And the panoramic views from the top of the track goes without saying. Also there are around 30,000 camp around the track for the whole week of the event. It really is one of the worlds greatest race tracks. Cheers
Peter could NOT HAVE recommended a better explanation of Bathurst, Mark “Larko” Larkham gives the absolute best description of the race EVER. Top recommendation Peter lol, I still get the shakes with Larko describing it, but then to see ppls reaction who’ve never seen the race is awesome.
Now that you have the course in perspective, wrap your brain around this: during the Bathurst 1000, drivers complete (assuming their car survives long enough) a whopping 161 laps of that track over 6-7 hours, totalling 1000 kms. The elevation difference from highest to lowest point is 174 metres. To add to the normal dangers of the track, sometimes kangaroos get on there. The track is made up of public roads that are temporarily closed for the races, of course the speed limit on those roads is far from race speeds, but off season it is possible to go there in a normal car and drive that track at a safe normal driving speed.
In normal days you can drive around Bathurst. I've driven the track a few times. The level change is immense. You don't get a real feel for high difference until you have been around the circuit. The thrill of the race, that every motorsports competitor want to win. The race had hosted some of the best race-drivers in the world. IndyCar stars Alexander Rossi and James Hinchcliffe will be competing this year at Bathurst. Other names you might know is Jack Brabham & Sterling Moss, have competed. Another name you might be familiar with is Michael Andretti of Walkinshaw Andretti Motorsports.
When you drive the actual track it’s incredible how tight and steep it is. It doesn’t show when you watch it but at those speeds on that track it’s insane.
It’s an awesome race at an awesome track. It’s fast, steep, tricky and narrow with no margin for error. Make a mistake and you hit the concrete wall HARD! The atmosphere during the race when you are in the crowd is electrifying! I drove my brother’s 2016 FGX XR6 Falcon on the track and was there at the 2011 Bathurst 1000. We had to get up at 5am and I drew the short straw to drive there so I was exhausted by early afternoon and fell asleep just past the cutting. The smoke from David Besnard’s crash at 6:54 woke me up.
I thought you may like this suggestion, awesome reaction, lol. That was showing one lap, there are 161 laps (1000kms) in the race, and yes it is a mountain with extreme elevations - and by the way it's a public road.

Allan was such a gentleman..cool temper, never even phased, just perfect lap after lap
Allan Moffat also drove a Mazda RX7 at Bathurst and in the championship back in the day.
Bathurst 1000 is the epitome of the saying "In order to finish first, first you must finish" 161 laps of this through Rain, Rocks and Roos. There is nothing like it in the rest of the world. it's a combination of streetcar racing, , Endurance Racing, Circuit racing, and Hill climb,
A suggestion if you're curious, (and haven't had this suggested already) you can find hot laps done in the passenger seat by Darrel Waltrip, and another by Murray Walker (of F1 commentary fame) on the youtubes, Gives you a bit of a sense of what this place is like
dont forget the echidna's
Or check out Greg Murphy's lap of the gods

That's Larko.. This race is more or less religion to Aussie Bogans. You have to make the pilgrimage to Bathurst to experience this. 🤘🇦🇺🍺

@@lukesummers7005 I went every year from 95 to 2015 and every year something random pops up (Wtf moments). Since I moved to Victoria for work I miss camping on the mountain so bad😣😭
You don't have to be a bogan to love this race. The series may be stale now, but Bathurst is one race that no racing fan will miss.

6 hour race of 1000km on what is normally a public road. If you look carefully, you can see the houses and driveways around the track.
Our man Larko , The Great Race is upon us again , been watching for 50 yrs and theres been plenty of beers , cheers and tears ! No doubt the greatest race on planet Earth !!
161 laps of pure excitement !! Love Bathurst and no one, and I mean no one can get you more ready for the race or more pumped up then the legend Larko on this video 💯👍
Australia’s great race, beers, bbq with mates in the back yard watching the race
I'm a local too
It crazy how the town goes from rural county to full on race car mode.
I’m not a massive motor sport fan, but I never miss Bathurst. 161 laps of entertainment
Same
Beautiful. This IS Australia, where no one fucks around!
Loved your delight!
And where everything is trying to bite, sting or otherwise hurt you. 😂
there is a terrific video you can watch of Peter Brock talking to the TV audience whilst in the middle of a race.
I also love the video where they had Greg prank the new HSV ambassador at a track day, bloody gold!!! 🤣😂
Yeah the video is quite cinematic, it's one of the best promotional motor racing videos you'll ever see.
I never get sick of watching this. I never get sick of watching Bathurst.
Bathurst is known as "The Great Race " . While the Melbourne Cup ( 3200 metres horse race ) is known as "The Race That Stops The Nation " .
the melbourne cup barely stops anyone now
@@reborndiajack9612Rubbish.
You’re speechless. This video got you. Very happy to see this.
Another suggestion is the video "The Greatest Motor Race EVER" by Josh Revell. It covers the 2014 race, which had drama, heartache, triumph and tragedy in spades.
1000% endorse this suggestion
@@andrewarmstrong7254 I 10000% endorse this endorsement.
"COUGH YA BASTARD! COUGH!!"
I was wondering if someone else would recommend this, I was about to myself and might do so anyway.
This cannot be emphasized enough. That race is a must watch.
@@666Buzzsaw That's sad. I haven't been there for more than 30 years. Being a public road was part of its appeal in my mind.
Supercars start the year with a 500km race now
The last few years I've been booking an annual leave day for the Monday after the race because I'm so tired from a full weekend of watching Bathurst that I need the extra day to rest before going back to work.
@@SomeRUclipsGuy It's a magical time of the year. Even more so than Xmas.

They build Tributes to their gods in the form of beer can pyramids
I drove the track everyday for 8 years either for work or pleasure, every bump, every dip.. they are all imprinted. and I'm not ashamed to say when watching the race there was most definitely a tv in the bathroom so not a minute was missed.
I cant wait to go this year.. only a couple weeks now.
Worshipping false idols at the end of the day. 😔

About 6hrs and 161 laps of Aussie car racing on a legendary Australian track🤔awesome mate👍🇦🇺
Great reaction video brother. Loved it.

You should have a look at the video titled "best touring car race ever last to 1st". Great video of an old master of the mountain.

Been to Bathurst twice after a 12 hour drive from Adelaide. The track is insane in person and cameras don't do it justice.
Enjoy watching the race mate
Now that you have the course in perspective, wrap your brain around this: during the Bathurst 1000, drivers complete (assuming their car survives long enough) a whopping 161 laps of that track over 6-7 hours, totalling 1000 kms. The elevation difference from highest to lowest point is 174 metres. To add to the normal dangers of the track, sometimes kangaroos get on there. The track is made up of public roads that are temporarily closed for the races, of course the speed limit on those roads is far from race speeds, but off season it is possible to go there in a normal car and drive that track at a safe normal driving speed.
And sometimes you get a tree or echidina.
Cant wait until Sunday to watch it live again Nothing like it bar the isle of man tt race for bikes
