As a boy of 10 I would lie under my mother's grand Steinway touching her feet as she would pedal through this composition...I am now 84., Maria's delightful playing brings back profound memories. Thank you for your hard earned virtuosity.

Maria played perfectly and beautifully. She is truly an amazing pianist. This pianist deserves the praise and respect of all of us!
I would normally use more sophisticated and nuanced terms to describe such a beautiful performance. However, tonight I’m not even going to try. A most challenging day but then concluded by this graceful performance reminds me that there is hope.
The beauty of being able to enjoy one’s craft, without being judged or passing an exam, or the fear of letting others down. Just sheer enjoyment in what you do. Being you. And your light shines through. Thank you.
The uniqueness is in her ability to convey emotion. All top pianists can learn these notes..but she gives us a melody that is so full of pain, joy, sweetness and intensity with big contrasts that really move me . She is also able to wait... hold the melody , not rushing always to show off speed when unnecessary. A feminine touch? ❤
Ladies and Gentlemen, I am Polish. Chopin, despite his French surname, was also Polish. Chopin's music is filled with the Polish "spirit". When I was (re)learning Schubert's A♭ major Impromptu, I listened to Maria's performance, which taught me a great deal. Every time I came back to her performance after a couple more weeks of practice I found new subtlety and depth in her interpretation, it was astonishing. I could never play with her facility and speed, but I used a lot of her ideas... The one thing I recall most strongly is that her transitions between different sections are never just transitions, they are yet another opportunity for sensitive and artistic expressiveness. Genius.
So very true. Also learning that impromptu right now and the clearness of her touch, the depth of the notes, the singing tone...ahhh its so magical. There are more great performances -and pianists!- but in this case i keep coming back again and again to her rendition. Otherwordly.

This woman is an inspiration. I just watched her perform Beethoven’s 4th Piano Concerto at the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. She’s so understated and remarkable at the age of 80. She started performing when she was 4 years old! What were most of us doing when we were 4? What a gift ❤
This Chopin Nocturne’s rendition reminds me in a Chopin’s movies I watched years ago. Then young but unknown Chopin met Madam George Sand who planned to introduce Chopin to the upper class elites in his debut. Madam arranged a piano performance in a party with all the lights off. Chopin started to play this Nocturne piece while all the guests listened attentively like had never had in such a splendid performance. Then Madam Sand brought a candle light and approached the piano while Chopin gradually appeared his face and figure. With all the surprise and praise, Chopin became an instant celebrity. Face or age shall never put a label on the music, but in reality it often does. People use their eyes to judge the content before using their ears or other sensories, and with no doubts using their minds last. Listen to this Chopin Nocturne with your eyes closed, in a pitch-darkness you will bring yourself back to the movie scene like Chopin is sitting and playing. Then open your eyes, you will have a feeling you have never had to the music.

Conta ela que deixou de estudar piano, pois acha que quanto mais estuda, menos bem lhe sai o resultado, de forma que Mª Pires agora apenas toca, assim e como sempre, de olhos fechados, sem ler pautas, ela deixa-se ir, levando-se com ela. Esteve doente e teve de cancelar programas durante uns meses. Tem muita paz na face e na voz. A música flui nela como o sangue nas veias, ela e a música são a mesma pessoa, acho eu.

Her 1996 set is phenomenal and for a time I though it was peerless. Then I heard the 2010 recordings by Dang Thai Son. I love them both.
