To play like this at her age is a huge privilege. Maria is one-of-a-kind pianist and it would be extremely beneficial to leave this video for generations of future pianists to learn from. So please do not take this gem of a video down on January 1st 2025. Give everyone the opportunity to enjoy it, learn from it and listen to it as many times as needed. Let's true art be accessible to all, any place, any time. Thank you in advance.
A fairly frequent privilege among musicians! To name some pianists who performed between 85 and 90 years of age, just think of: Horowitz, Kempff, Rubinstein and Claudio Arrau. There is an aphorism that says: Once you learn to ride a bicycle, you never forget how to do it!😄
@@villafloridiana you just mentioned 4 (privileged) names, and there are thousands of pianists out there. I am a pianist and a piano educator and I disagree with your statement. Many pianists performances decline with age. Do not forget that we do need our body to perform. Even to ride a bicycle 😉
I am moved to tears, not only because of the timeless elegance, and eternal grace of Maria Joao Pires' musical spirit- but from a personal experience I had in my younger days: I had decided to move to Lisbon, from NYC in 1996. I was, and still am at 66 - a Bohemian soul. I just wanted to live there! I had little money, and practically knew no one there, but one day I made the short trip to the coastal town of Cascais...not far from Lisbon. I was walking on the small cobblestone streets in the commercial area, and saw this petite, delicate woman struggling with a mass of shopping bags. I offered her some assistance, and she looked up at me with sweet, pleading eyes - and said: "Yes! Please!". I had been in Paris visiting a friend a week earlier, and he had shown me a Deutsche Grammophon CD of Maria Joao Pires playing Chopin, and said I should know about her since I was going to Portugal. I recognized the woman before me as THAT Woman! I said - "Hello, Maria?" - and she: "You know who I am?...You are American?" I told her I was a Pianist. I am. And after loading the bags into her little car, she thanked me profusely, and offered me her personal mobile contact, and said - if I needed anything, please call her! Out of respect, I never did, but I never forgot her, and her effervescent kindness. She is amongst my favorite Pianist on Earth, and her interpretation of Chopin's Nocturnes are peerless! - In fact, I refer to her as - Maria Joao "Peerless"!
oh what an opportunity you lost my friend , her offer was genuine , and at t very least perhaps she would have had tea with you , or even invited you to a concert !! Never pass up an opportunity like that !!
Such a beautiful story. Thank you for sharing it here. Wish Maria would read this and remember you after all those years. I love Portugal too. Hope to visit there again someday. Wish you the best for 2025.
One of the most unique pianists, still playing and enchanting. Pieces seem simple when she is playing; and how can she play with such delicacy and firmness at the same time! Her way of playing Debussy makes think I'm in heaven. I really love her for years, and I'm proud of her legacy as a Portuguese.
Be still, my heart. The delicacy of her touch, leaves me breathless. Like a ballerina who appears to dance just above the stage, seeming to float through her performance. Leaving us earthbound mortals experiencing the presence of angels
Madame, there is no word before your most sincere performance. My heart was touched deeply with your noble and beautiful music. I could see how Mozart was playing this piece under many different emotions. Madame, please keep your good health and continue to cheer us up with your most colorful and magnificent performance. Your dedication to create the beauty in this broken world brings me tears… Hey, all dictators and horrible leaders of this world, LISTEN To Her music!!! Can’t you feel anything?? Make our world to appreciate beautiful works rather than destroy them!!
What a wonderful Mozart and what a wonderful Debussy! You prove many things, but most of all you prove to me it is still possible to be wonderful alive at 80. I am 79.
quelle époustouflante leçon de simplicité et de musique !!! à chaque fois elle me tire des larmes par sa lumière !! Il faut laisser cette vidéo visible à vie !!
My congratulations! What a privilege for a professional pianist to perform with such excellency at the age of 80. And it is a privilege for me to listen to Maria João Pires! I greatly admire her.
I am a fan of this wonderful Mozart player since long, I have tons of recordings of that time. And now... WOW!.... Old Age has not stolen even a little bit from her magnificent play!!! Gives me hope, I'm 77, maybe I can't function like her in what I do, but seeing this marvelous person performing in such a celestial manner in this day... it is simply a marvel, after all, the continuation of being her fan, my Favorite Mozartian Pianist! And... did you notice that she played all these pieces by heart? No score needed 😲 💖💖💞❤
Such polished performances! I remember hearing her in Madrid in 2009. Everything she does has such clear, compelling intent and direction. Such a high level of musicianship.
so warm performance!full of humanity!full of compassion! I feel so relaxed, deeply moved... I don't know why?? However her performance is something beyond music only...her personality is reflecred, I think. The best and only emotion I have ever had. So wonderful。Thank you very much Maria 😊😊

Bravo, bravo et encore bravo ! Quelle maîtrise de l'instrument ! J'aime observer le mouvement des doigts qui cherchent à éviter les tensions. Magnifique ! Obligada.
I had the amazing good fortune to be in the front row right below her and right of one of the cameras. For me, this was a once-in-a-lifetime performance as I have rarely lived near a concert hall. At one point she brought me to near tears, I was so mesmerized and happy. And then just a week later, Yuja Wang (a Gilmore alum!) blew the roof off with 6 encores. 7? I lost count. I now live only 90 minutes from KZoo and have become a supporter of The Gilmore series and plan to attend often. Highlight of my retirement! Enjoy and thank you Gilmore staff for posting!
They say that with age comes wisdom, though as an 83 year man I'm not sure that is true... BUT... having played the piano as one of the world's greatest for perhaps seven decades will yield brilliance. You can tell she is living and breathing these pieces. Stunning.

Maria João Pires. So delicate. So elegant. Amazing pianist.
