The ultimate bike comes with an ultimate price! Its geometry suits an everyday rider, that is what he is saying. Its the ultimate bike for a person who isnt racing. Thats what he means by everyday. No where in the video did he say it was the best bang for the buck. He said it was cheaper than competitors "ultimate bikes". Hes comparing the best of the best for recreational riders. Recreational riders that also have a large budget. Theres lots of people out there that put a lot of money in their hobby! Great video, looks like a great bike.
Nice review. Sweet looking ride which caught my attention from your Sea Otter review. Seems like the ride is in keeping with the smooth styling. It’s great that you made space to showcase FiftyOne.
Totally agree with his comment regarding why on earth did Specialized design the Aethos with a race (ie. Tarmac) geo. That said this "everyday" Sika has a stack that is only 1.1cm taller and .4cm shorter in reach. Frankly, not sure I would feel much of a difference between the race geo of the Tarmac vs the geo of this "everyday" Sika.
I have a Fray and absolutely love it! I've already forgotten how hard it hit my pocket book at the time of purchase. Living in California, I don't know that I'll ever want mudguards, but I like the ability to do so, What is a big deal is the downtube storage; it is so nice to have all cables hidden and no tool bag or pump exposed, it's all in the frame and pretty quiet when you pack it right. The Giant Defy and Cervelo Aspero or Caledonia 5 options might be a bit more value, but I couldn't be happier with the Fray despite the extra costs. It is simply the best all around bike I have every owned by a good margin.
Beautiful bike really like the looks and geo. Though four grand for a frame set I’d personally be looking for something from Look or Time. Two bikes which you really should feature more of on this channel.
But do you really need mudguard mounts to be able to mount mudguards on it? There are so many different options now that work very well, so I don’t think this is a dealbreaker argument.
Dave... €4500. You totally lost me. For that price any of the Tarmac SL 8 frames are better. Any of the Madone frames are better. You could buy basically three Winspace frames. Who in their right mind would pay this much money for such a niche brand without any of the heritage like Colnago whatever.
Agree. Also "Mere mortals" don't need DA or Red. I just configured Colnago V4RS on their website, with Ultegra Di2 and it costs 7600 euros (other components stock). I think I know where my money goes.
Looking at the geometry, I would argue this is not really an endurance bike. It’s actually fairly low and long when compared to the big brand offerings.
Unfortunately, this is where the bike industry is at. Top level framesets from S-works, Colnago, and Trek are $7k. And the highest range bikes are $15k! 15 years ago, you could get a great bike with Ultegra/105 mix and a decent frameset for around $1-$1.5k. Nowadays a comparable bike will cost you $4-$5k or more.
Trouble is, the fucking things aren't 14grand more value, carbon is carbon we've had it figured out for 40 years, hydraulic disc brakes and a derailer don't cost 10 grand either. The only thing that seems relatively constant or at least inline with inflation is sort of mid-high level carbon wheels, they've always cost about what they cost now. It is what it is, my boss is loaded and buys a new bike every year so I get last years model for approx 1/8th the price it cost him a year before, so I personally don't care. But its becoming a bit of a piss take.
Very appealing frame. Saw one at the Rouleur show and looked very svelte. So, here’s the real test David, for just a road bike, albeit wearing 32-38c tyres. Would you start with a Sika frameset, a Crux, or a Fray? Just as a road bike remember. Will be interested in your take….
You should do a video on a bike that does not have a 6+ inch drop to the bars. This video the drop is not too bad, but I have friends that could not handle that for any length of time.
That is definitely not an around bike when you look at the geometry. Quite low and long. Compare it for example to the Parlee Ouray. That is what I could call an all round bike / geometry.
yadda yadda yadda. a motorbike is assembled by a machine, its cast parts and only 1 size. Bicycles are hand made and come in multiple sizes so the tooling is way more. plus the economy of scale with units sold throws the argument away
Hi David, can you comment on your experience or differences you found with the Goodyear Vector R vs the Continental GP5000 please? I guess obviously the Continental would be more comfortable, given that it's 32mm wide vs the 30mm of the Goodyear, but I wonder what it would be like if it was a 30mm Continental vs the custom made Goodyear.
What's wrong with a race bike with spacers? Many race bikes are now comfortable and they are the fastest. If having a couple of spacers makes it fit well, and thus more comfortable, why wouldn't we use them? I normally rate your commentary but that sounded very snobbish.
It's not meant to be snobbish at all, it's just making a race bike to fit people with 3cm of spacers seems a bit odd to me when you could get a road bike with a taller head tube and have no spacers, plus all the the other great benefits of endurance bikes compared to race bikes (even more. comfort, wider tyres etc)
Besides being hideously expensive, this geometry is far removed from what the everyday rider needs. Way too close to race geometry and a more relaxed endurance geometry would make more sense for most folks.
Would be nice to see some rando type bikes reviewed; for example the Ritchey Montebello. You do a great job on your reviews but it is tiring to see basically the same carbon fiber bike reviewed over and over again.
Could you go with road bike overall and then the distinctions are something like: aggressive geometry or race geometry, slack geometry or relaxed geometry? And why can’t an “endurance bike” have all the aero features like a shaped head tube, deeper down tubes etc… I don’t understand that. I know/understand stack height and body positioning have a bigger impact on speed but I feel like bike companies would have an easier time selling an “aero optimized endurance bike”… It seems to work in mountain biking… xc bikes are known for their racier geometry while trail bikes are known for slacker geometry but doesn’t seem to get in people’s heads as much
10k for the bike. If your idea is to spend that kind of money you can literally buy any super bike. I heavily doubt that an everyday rider would spend 10k. I sure won't.
Great bike and video but you left me scratch my head with how many times you called it “Road bike” over and over , why? Since the tire clearance is 40mm and many will consider taking that bike on gravel. Welcome your thoughts 😊
He was saying that because the stack height is relatively long, compared to many more aggressive road bikes. To obtain the same fit, you would not need spacers under the stem.
Loads of complaints about ‘too expensive for an everyday bike’ …. But in a World where people buy £100k watches, £1m cars, ££££ houses, yachts, helicopters, etc … then I am sure there are enough people with the funds to buy them … and if they can, then why not … it’s not that expensive in the scheme of other peoples passions
WTF! The everyday road bike is one I can afford. Sram red is not my everyday group set. For this kind of coin, this is my dream bike, not my everyday road bike. This is why the bike industry is so fucking out of touch with their customers.
The prices of bikes are not value for money anymore, 10.000 for a bicycle even 4 or 5 thousand is far to much! I was checking for trike's (bicycles) pure out of curiosity and found these prices more value for money, like a "lightweight" trike with Ultegra etc. 5.000!!
David I love your show. But the bike fork just looks odd. Not my taste, sorry Sika. I think I like Festka. Now something everyone should know, light and skinny tubes makes a bike very twitchy. I rather have a heavy bike with over size tubes.
You could obviously build this frame with a cheaper list of parts to hit a lower price point. And the everyday tag isn't a comment on price and what people can afford but rather the fact that many non racing cyclists buy racing bikes
No, but there are a lot of different kinds of pedals with different weights. No point listing the weight with look pedals if you use SPD, easier to just list without it and you can add the weight of whichever pedals you use yourself.
Not all people ride road pedal. Some of us ride the heavier variant. Thus it's easier if he give the weight without pedal because then i can just add the pedal weight with it
This is a nice bike but not nearly "everyday rider's bike". If we could have 105 DI2 equipped Sika for 4,499.00 € they ask just for the frameset, maybe we could call it everyday rider's bike. But even that's too much.
"Bike for normal people... brand new SRAM Red" You know, I bet there are a lot more people who join races then there are people who buy a brand new Red with their own money...
When a frame set alone is £4k, you may need to reset your idea of “everyday riders”
Exactly. Sram Red= not for everyone
well if you can afford it, you certainly would want to ride it everyday 😉
@@MattRose30000 whether I can afford it or not I'd buy many other things first
@@ariffau for an "everyday rider"? Not that
Everyday riders doesn't mean every rider. It just means someone who rides every day.

They’re still around, recently retired Emonda, Orbea Orca, Aurum Magma, Basso Diamanté.

My complete, modified 8.1kg Di2 Trek Domane costs less than this frameset. The industry has gone nuts.
Great review of a great bike ! Aidan and the team at FiftyOne are amazing frame builders who really know their craft. awesome bike !

David, your delivery and descriptive insight in your videos is always greatly appreciated. Thank you for your work :)
4.5k frameset for the everyday rider. Sure.

I've had my eyes on this one since I saw the Sea Otter pitch. Gorgeous looks and light weight
Me too. What hoops would you go for though? FiftyOne have it with Zipp 404s on their site, which I think looks killer on this ride.
Yes, Open is still making the Mind. I bought one based (in part) on your video. Great bike!
Oh wow great to hear that thanks!
And they've just announced they'll be releasing a new version of the UPPER, coming very soon ;-)
Yes, I saw that! A new bike for DA to review.
Beautiful bike and build. Great review!
It's super nice. It's also sadly out of my price range. If I was in the UK, I'd want to support a local manufacturer and would consider buying one.
This is basically an expensive gravel bike, no?
No.
No, the geometry wouldn’t be suited to much off road. The head tube angle would not help it off road.
Occasional off road would be okay.
No it’s an endurance bike which he mentioned a fair few times in the video.
You had me at 27.2 ❤
As soon as I saw the price I lost interest
Hey David. I got to ride in the Cotswold last year. Absolutely stunning! Cheers!
Lovely isn't it!

10 grand with SRAM red.......Can buy a motorbike for that! Lovely back though. Really nice.
The frame looks a lot like the 2021 Cannondale Syanpse (you know the nice Synapse, before they went all Robocop on it)
Enve Fray over the Sika because the price is the same. Enve better. Prices crazy!!
I mean, it's the same front stack in many sizes as a SuperSix Evo4. So Endurance might be a stretch.

You'd have to REALLY want something different to show off at the cafe. To my eyes at least this bike is bland AF though.

I think I know where my money goes.
@david in the all road/ endurance category-
Can you review the new Cervélo Caledonia 5 please?
I have asked if they will let me, so hopefully watch this space :)
Looking at the geometry, I would argue this is not really an endurance bike. It’s actually fairly low and long when compared to the big brand offerings.
I dont think that everyday rider will spend 4.5k for framset, let alone 10k for full bike
My comment about everyday wasn't at all based on price, but the shape and fit of the road bike
Would you say it’s slower to turn in than the tcr then?
Unfortunately, this is where the bike industry is at. Top level framesets from S-works, Colnago, and Trek are $7k. And the highest range bikes are $15k!

If the Specialized Aethos and Crux had a baby
I think the Canyon Endurace is still a better overall option if you are looking for an endurance bike

Here in NZ you can get 2024 triumph speed triple for that price , Apple iPhone cost 10$ to produce this seka 1000$ at the most to produce

If you’ve ever bought a smartphone with somewhere between a 50 and 80 multiplier, then this frameset with just a 4.5 multiplier is quite the bargain.

Race bikes aren’t supposed to be run with spacers as it reduces the stiffness, plus it looks rubbish.
It's just too expensive.

So many sweeping generalizations about endurance bikes, wow! A good fit will on an endurance bike will trump a poor fit on a race.

I'm an everyday rider and I can't afford to spaff £4k on a frame. I bet I'm not alone.
You’re not for certain, but there are many who can afford a £4K frame, so a wild guess is that’s the market they are shooting for.
I'm sorry, but that bike is pretty ugly to look at. The horribly shaped front fork is sure to attract a lot of buyers.
