All her friends call her "Alaska"
When she takes speed, they laugh and ask her
What is in her mind

Music video by Lou Reed performing Caroline Says II (audio). (C) 1973 RCA Records a division of Sony Music Entertainment
"You can hit me all you want to, but I don't love you anymore." Damn...such an honest and heavy song, beautifully written and sung by the late great Lou Reed.
its hard to pick a favorite lou reed song but this might be it
Unfortunately late Lou Reed !
One of the greatest lines ever but dont we frorget Lou was allegedly a wife beater

Caroline says
while bitin' her lip
life is meant to be more than this
...and this is a bum trip.
Just realized "Caroline says; while she makes up her eye. You ought to learn more about yourself. Think more than just eye". At first I thought she was saying this to her abuser. Then AS SHE MAKES UP HER EYE. She's staring in the mirror as she either dresses up her eye or more rhan likely is patching up a black eye from her abuser. She saying either you ought to learn more about yourself. Don't just put yourself first and you wont get hit. Or she's thinking. You need more self-reflection so you can get out of this mess. Lou was THE MASTER of words for sure! Better than Dylan in my opinion.
I relate it as, this is directed as a statement for the abuser, he is selfish and without empathy. Deep old stuff.
or she was thinking of other bruises she ought to hide. Sadly, this is something an abused person might think.
I is to the abuser think more than just “ I “ .
@@igotasweetass However you interoperate it is fine by Lou .
Indeed
I had "the" moment with him.
Coimbra, 2001,or 2.
He bought a lot of Portuguese wine at my daddy's shop.
And invited me to concert with me plus whatever. At the break sent someone to ask me to join them with a glass of wine. Amazing!
Believe it or not.
Que buena anécdota...
@@Mortis5491 r u talking to me?
Berlin is easily the most underrated album of the early 70s. What a masterpiece of misery!
Some people need pain to be happy
Lou Reed was one of my favorites from the 70s. Used to play clubs, Max’s Kansas City was the center of the universe when he played there. He had an interesting life, to say the least. Given shock treatment to cure his homosexual urges, to working for Warhol, to his friendship with Bowie and Iggy Pop. His whole catalogue was...interesting.
UNDER RATED? iT MADE THE TOP 10 IN UK.
I love Berlin so much
So the rumor is that on "the kids" somebody told a couple kids that their mom died and thats why their are real children crying on this record. fucked up if true
Lou Reed was the master of sweet melancholia.
agreed.

This man must be applauded for he is Genius!
And now the position is held by Nick Cave in my opinion.

If it weren't for people like L.R. many such an observation of everyday banality would go without a halo. What I mean is that without this and similar works of art I would completely miss the grandeur of everyday life.
Uros Jankovic Beautifully put, Uros!
Exactly. We need artists whose work reflects real life, not just idealized life. They are chroniclers.
Everyday Urban life where I survive, awesome, love the little twinkle as she puts her hand through the window pane.
Which similar récord ?
@@estebanposadaduque6415 Well, staying with L.R. guess one could say that his entire output is about this kind of observations. Only difference being in the motive he happens to pick up. He could be talking about very simple aspects of everyday life as he does in "Growing up in public" or very deep ruminations on life, death, friendship as he is doing in "Magic and Loss" but he never looses touch with life as it is happening around us...
brutal song, Lou at his best
gao1258 es la historia de amor entre Lou y Nico. Se la dedicó a ella
It’s so cold in Alaska…
It is.
Life is meant to be more than this
Lou is remembered for ground breaking stuff, hits like walk on, perfect day etc, but i just think the world is still not ready to accept this song, as real today as when it was written, i gotta say, he did recount life, whether you liked it or not.
No one is "ready" for a work of art like 'Berlin' its very complex. Thankfully there's enough like you and I who get it and work it out.
This has been my absolute favorite favorite record / multimedia offering of my entire life. It's (for better and worse) been my biggest inspiration as a songwriter / performer / music therapist) for my entire life. I simply adore it and slways will. Bought my first copy ( a cutout for $1.99) in 1974 and have owned over 30 copies in LP and CD since then
I love the accompanying lyric and picture book that tells the story from an even more visual perspective, as well. There are a couple close seconds, but c'mon, man. . .
Since I was 11 years old Berlin has been my favourite album. This specific song always gets me. It's so sad and relatable. Thanks to my dad for discovering me this masterpiece.
Your name may have something to do with it, i suppose. Deep and natural rather than cold😊
My son (36) doesn't like much about me, but I'm proud of his accomplishments, not least learning from me to love Lou Reed, Gram Parsons, and Warren Zevon.
This is a re-working of the Velvet Underground song, Stephanie Says. Some of the same lyrics
Caroline says
as she gets up off the floor
Why is it that you beat me
it isn't any fun
Caroline says
as she makes up her eyes
You ought to learn more about yourself
think more than just I
But she's not afraid to die
all her friends call her "Alaska"
When she takes speed, they laugh and ask her
What is in her mind
what is in her mind
Caroline says
as she gets up from the floor
You can hit me all you want to
but I don't love you anymore
Caroline says
while biting her lip
Life is meant to be more than this
and this is a bum trip
But she's not afraid to die
all her friends call her "Alaska"
When she takes speed, they laugh and ask her
What is in her mind
what is in her mind
She put her fist through the window pane
It was such a funny feeling
It's so cold in Alaska
it's so cold in Alaska
It's so cold in Alaska
the most beautiful and hard song I've ever heard.
All the album is pretty harsh. A beautiful album tho.
amen
@@nicorigo5661 Get rid of 'The Bed'' and it's his best, imo. I've heard that he wanted this to be his masterpiece...it's so f-ing powerful, right? What comes close?
@@robertmorley4506 The bed is the harshest of them all, it freezes my blood when I listen to it really...
@@nicorigo5661 I won't listen to it anymore...it's the only Reed song I can't deal with
I'am just a "frenchy", just able to understand english. And I'am also a 60 years old women, remenbering that I was listening this album when I was young (under20). And according to me it was the masterpeice of Lou, excepting perhaps 'perfect day". Respect!!!! for him of course....
Nice memory, merci.
Slightly younger (but not that much) Irish lad who also loved this album from my youth, and was luc ky enough to catch the Berlin 2008 tour in Cork Ireland, most peo[ple I know don't even know of the albums exsistance, rock on lili, paix et amour from Eire.
I’m 65. I have loved this album from the first time I heard it in ‘74. Awesome music and Lou knew what he was doing. I was in the minority at the time, none of my friends were listening to this. Superb music.

Lou avais noblesse oblige pour la condition humaine,----j'ai oublie tout mon Francais mais je vais essayer...
Listening from Alaska (Anchorage) . Bought lp the day of its release . Love Lou Reed !
Stephanie Says redux.
Berlin is a work of a true genius which Lou truly was so you rock critics can all go take a fucking walk
I love this song. I first started to listen to Lou Reed and the VU when I was 19. Coincidentally, I was having a root canal and taking some pretty good pain meds. That is not to say that one needs drugs to listen to Lou's music. I am now 59 and sober as a priest, but still love it. I can honestly say that my life would have changed in some small, but significant way without Lou and the VU.
Me transporta a mis 19 años cuando escuchábamos Transformer y Berlin sin parar en un caset de nuestro piso de estudiantes en Madrid.
This is the most depressing song I've ever heard.
I love it.
Jon. If you think this is the most depressing song...continue on this album to They’re taking her kids away.
DEPRESSING? TRY HAMBURGER LADY (THROBBING GRISTLE) OR FRANKIE TEARDROP (SUICIDE)
try walk alone
Really, listen to Harry's Circumcision, its amazing .
Suzanne Vega's depression
One of best records ever - for my taste in same line with the first Velvet Underground .
Berlin is an amazing album. Lou Reed was a great song writer and will be missed forever. Listening to Berlin brings me back to the days when I would visit my younger brother at Mass College of Art. Great music and good times.
New York 1989 is a close second 😂
Love it, always have for 40 odd years. He was apparently really into his heroin at that time. Being a now clean heroin disciple for most of my life I really can still dig this album (not so much the words behind the song). I'm strong enough to enjoy the Berlin album as it should be. Despite all that, this is easily the best tune of them all. Right on whoever and stay strong cos it gets easier, believe. X
Could be the most Under Rated lps ever
Tutti ricordano Perfect Day per Trainspotting, ma anche questa canzone è di una tristezza infinita. Bellissima!!
I watched him do this album completely live , Caroline says really got me , might be my favorite Lou Reed song now
The favourite song for a spanish singer called Olvido Gara
what a beautiful song. Breakes my heart
My favorite Loue Reed album and probably, my favorite song of it- such a masterpiece.
You heard Marc Almond version of this, heart breakingly visceral! 💜🎤
I lived in Alaska (Wisconsin), nightmare, glad to be out of there!
NOOGIE 420 Con Alaska se refiere a otra cosa...
'Alaska' rhims with 'ask her' 😀
Lou seemed to have a lot of guilt somewhere built up. I love Lou. I often wonder how he knew all this. I am a 'caroline', who barely made it out alive, and am permanently disabled after domestic abuse.
He was no angel , he had a violent past, not nice to read, but well, god bless
@@MM-gf5zk Lou was no Angel I am sure, but I have not read about any concerted abuse of women by Reed. I dont much care if what I write is nice to read, and 'God' hasn't had much to do with any of it.
No , course not, just being nice, I don't believe in God either. There is a good book by Victor Brockris second name, he was close to them and in the Factory etc. He wrote and claimed that Reed did assault his wife Bettye Reed. It is quite well documented. I loved his work since I was a kid, Harry's Circumcision, how can a song about such a topic, be beautiful? I relate to it I suppose.
@@zookeeper5248 I never said anything about what you said is not nice to read, reading that he was fuckin violent is unpleasant to read as we love his music. I thought it was obvious.
Nope. Not cancelling or judging Lou over unsubstantiated rumor. I respect Laurie Anderson, she has said nothing of the sort....and I say that as a survivior of DV.
Why is this so heart breaking…
Marc almond does a great version of this ❤
If ya need a good CRY ...This is a top 10 hit
we miss you transformer
The Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band of depression.
Not sure what it is, a haunting and probably a very realistic comment even today, those strings are so evocative. Saw Mr Reed and band '77 & "84, memorable occasions.
I can't get enough of this song
I have listened to this album since my early teens. Nobody else I knew liked or understood this kind of music.
Alice Cooper dijo de Berlin que era el sargent Peppers negro de los años 70 . Es un disco conceptual, poético y hermosanente iterario y duro como lo son las historias de gente como Jim y Caroline. Y la música es muy buena.
I know over 20 Lou tunes and I'm here to tell you: first, that man could write a song , especially '65-69, when much released later was written , in many voices and forms a la McCartney and few others; second, the literary quality of his lyrics are on the level of a Dylan, Cohen, Cave, Ginsburg, Wilde, what have you...; third, he's the godfather of punk and art rock and a conduit between English-major poets and Beats and rock and roll; fourth, that mother played wicked rhythm guitar that no one else does, and '69 live is the best album on earth to learn guitar to and rivet your ass; fifth, the drug shit fades and ceases to matter, dwarfed by his timeless songwriting and motto: "I always thought I had something to say, and I said it." Inspirational!
Lou at his best
He and David Bowie is the best!😊💖
Like, Perfect Day, is this another song meant to address what speed as a drug might be doing to him at the time?
I think that this track is his BEST song along with "The Bed" from his BEST record...Berlin!
