I never once thought of the Lst Supper watching that segment. It looked like a Bachannalian feast to me. If you want to get offended by that, then fine. For one thing there were too many people to reflect the Last Supper painting. Just a bunch of mean spirited people desperately seeking to be offended.

I think the root of Christian hypocrisy for this (and many other things) may be a book (and the teaching of said book) that was meant to be a guide for living, loving, creating, etc. that was "translated" into a book of mostly fear, low self-worth (born a sinner, etc.), and obedience to religion versus right action, words, thoughts, etc. JMHO having been "brought up" in Christian churches and always feeling something was off (even as a young child). Thanks for the perspective!

This is unrelated to the Last Supper; it pertains to the Greek god Dionysus, who represents wine, pleasure, and celebration. The Romans referred to him as Bacchus. The Olympics were not exclusively a Christian event, and it's time to stop confining everything to a Christian perspective. Many faiths exist, and each can be valid if they promote the loving growth of the Soul. Humanity cannot progress if it continues this narrow-mindedness. Those who believe they possess all the answers and that their path is the only true one are missing the essence of life on Earth. Furthermore, many Christians do not adhere to Christ's teachings but instead follow intermediaries who misrepresent Him.

“I’m not a sports fan, I’m a coffee fan!” - LOL, that quote explains me so well. Let’s put that on a bumper sticker, huh? 😂
But seriously, while I barely know anything about this controversy, the hypocrisy only compounds when you realize they distorted Jesus’s whole life story almost beyond recognition - to the point where it’s only now we’re beginning to rediscover what he originally meant to teach. Maybe they’d be less upset about this, if they knew the full extent to which they misread Jesus completely... FOR THE BETTER PART OF 2 MILLENNIA.

  • @AndrewOudin

I observe that the controversy fits the overall artistic expression so well that it could hardy be better planned; Joan of Arc, depicted as the torchbearer, was burned alive on behalf of England for the "blasphemy" of crossdressing. Enflaming the english speaking world about crossdressing is almost poetic in the context of how the opening ceremony was so heavy with expressions of french history.
I'm not saying the controversy is good, nor am I saying I agree with either side. I am saying I see the whole thing as art, and that carefully crafted.

I guess we all can be accused of hypocrisy for one thing or another - but conservative Christians are particularly obnoxious about their religious hypocrisy. If one of them told me something about this issue I’d tell them to stop being ridiculous or go bother someone else with their baseless gripe. I have told some of them off concerning their attacks on Taylor Swift - I do not like those sanctimonious people. Yes, the goal is to be loving toward everyone but this dualistic world makes that nearly impossible - plus you don’t have to like all people.

Merci John !

What is being mistaken for the table of the last supper was actually a runway, for a fashion show that was happening right after the opening ceremony . You’re absolutely right,

...I'm...gonna be honest...if Jeshua could stand against the religious and political oppression, even tending to the wound of one who sought his capture, I cannot understand why people would be hung up on this. I...try not to judge. I try to not compare myself to others. I have a simple question for the people that have these issues: If it was turbans instead of drag queens, would you have the same issue with it? Isn't Jeshua's whole message is to love thy neighbor?
...I swear...back in Rome when Christians were oppressed, the Usurper decided to flip the script and oppress others SUPER hard.
I feel Dogma should be required viewing for ANYONE who claims to be "Christian"...for...if there is a Good and Kind Yahwe, that being MUST have a good sense of humor...otherwisr the platypus wouldn't exist.
From my standpoint, I view that entity more like the Gnostic view.

These people seem to have so much contempt for others, it's really a shame that they can spend time finding offense with things that have nothing to do with the vast majority of them. @@johnofnew "The opening ceremony did ruffle some feathers… and I LOVE it," Doll wrote on his Instagram Stories on Monday morning. "You know why? Because the Olympics are the biggest stage in the world and us queer people have always been the audience of other people’s life and achievement and it is time that we are welcome in the space."
FYI Doll was a torchbearer and part of the ceremony.
That is one quote. While there is no smoking gun you have some intelligence. They knew it would be offensive. The backlash is massive. Read the news.
All of them are sticking to their story. Fine. Many others ARE offended.
Give a group a pass for being offensive John.
I had to talk to my 25 year old son who has Asperger's like such:
SON: "Those people should kill themselves for doing that!"
ME: "What? Did you really find that offensive?"
      SON:"Yeah"
      ME:"Your're not a Christian"
SON:"No but I still find it offensive"
Me:"Do you think they did it on purpose?
      SON:"Yes"
ME:" Look we don't want anyone to kill themselves. Best we can hope for is that they learn from this and try not to offend anyone in the future. If I was offended I would forgive them and forgive myself as well and quickly forget about it."
      SON:"Yeah okay."
They were offensive and knew it would be offensive. I really don't care about this I think it is stupid.
But John you are not even close on your message. You only spoke of hypocrisy and false idols of a faith and "no offense was given" and the hate and fear of those offended.
I expected "try not to be offensive to other people and if you are offended forgive and forget. Don't let bitterness into your heart."
Like I said I really don't care about this but it sure sounds like your giving a pass to those who offended and feel that it was not an offensive thing to do.
You have your opinion and I have mine. Go in peace John and best wishes and love to you for I am already over this.

Raising a son with Asperger's has challenged me to cut to the core on issues when he asks questions. Similar to the why question that was asked.
This is what I explained to him:
Artists, inventors, innovators and such need not be burdened with whom they might offend, to live in fear of offending. Greatness has never been achieved by not pushing boundaries and playing it safe. So create and don't worry about the rest.
People get offended for a variety of reasons. That is their problem to solve if they feel offended. People cannot live in fear of being offended by the world.
If you do get offended then here is a tool that I use. Forgive them, forgive yourself, and get on with your life. If you can truly forgive you will quickly forget and therefore prevent bitterness from entering your heart and affecting you.
If you cannot forgive you need to have a serious conversation with yourself.
I don't get into the weeds with the who, why, where etc. I found that to be a waste of time.
I do not like how John handled this and decided to push back to get people to think by arguing on specifics that really are not important.
I felt John should have stayed at the 30,000 foot level instead of stepping right into it. That's my opinion. Don't mean I am right. Guess it is my fault for higher expectations. My problem to deal with no one else's. Have a good day.

Invoking Divinity to back up one's views always seems like arguing from authority to me. The pros and cons either way are not worth considering in my view. Though the director said it depicted a Bacchanalia not the last supper. The only similarity to the last supper was people on one side of a table. On a per senium stage that's how you stage it. Christians are offended because people are standing on one side of the table and it's slightly resembled the last some of her by Leonardo da Vinci. It had nothing to do with that painting. And that painting is not a holy relic. Christians are choosing to believe it's an offense to them when it isn't.

Thanks. I appreciate your take on this. I don't think Jesus would have cared, but I have doubts that their intentions were purely about inclusivity. They were sticking it to Christians. To me there are implications of the state seizing power from the moral authority of Chrisitanity. You and I know that is a man made authority, at any rate it was a guiding light to the development of western society and thought. However, this feels less about love inclusivity and more about enforcing new rules and cultural norms. You HAVE TO accept gay and trans and whatever, if not you are evil. Some people believe it is a sin to be gay and they are frustrated with the moral posturing of this kind of thing. At any rate this is a very complex topic.
