    Thanks for the tip Tommy. I haven’t had a chance to get on the water with my 360 yet so I was especially glad to see this video. I have the same issue with my fins although oddly enough it was the rear fin that was too tight. Only took about five minutes of working it and it loosened up. Thanks again.

      I got my 360 last Saturday and I had exactly the same issue, I noticed the problem before I got into the water, fins were extremely hard to go back in place. I spent a couple minutes pushing in and out the fins, tried it on water and the front fin doesn’t touch the back one, but it does not all the way in.
      Would grease help?

    Curious... How well do the fins do in heavy weeds/grass? I currently have a Native Titan with the Propel drive and I'm constantly having to pull the drive out of the water to clean weeds off the prop. I'm considering other kayaks because of this problem. How does your 360 do in heavy weeds?

    • @TomyTekOutdoors
      @TomyTekOutdoors  4 года назад

      I've gone through pads with no problem. If weeds are thick, I can bungee my pedal back to keep the fins flat to the hull. Then I can paddle through until it's not as thick. That was one of the reasons I went with Hobie. I fish very shallow areas and thick vegetation.

    Interesting. Hobie loaned my organization three engineering prototype 180 Kickup drives and they worked quite different from what you have here. They have plastic pieces where you've got metal (aluminum?). And they have a setscrew to adjust the force required to kick them up. They said to adjust them so that 20 pounds pull on the tip of the fin would release the mechanism. My 2020 Outback came with kickup fins and they adjust the same way as the prototypes. So for those who do not have those really fancy 360 drives, look at the front of the cup where the fin latches and see if you can see a recessed set screw and adjust that.
    Oh, and having the front fin kickup but not the rear one is quite common because, well, it hits things first. You may feel a clack or two as it strikes the rear fin. The propulsion generated by pedaling is what causes the fins to swing forward and lock back into place. So just hit a few really hard pedal strokes to lock it back in quickly or if it is set to really high kickup resistance. Your front fin generates a lot of force when you pedal it hard and it probably would have locked with hard enough strokes. If you are in an Oasis, warn the other person that you are going to do it. :-)

    Such a cumbersome drive. I love Hobie because of the compactness and lightness.

    • @TomyTekOutdoors
      @TomyTekOutdoors  3 года назад +1

      The drive is pretty amazing. Early adopters are going to run into some problems, but I feel this should have been taken care of before it left the factory or they could have at least let consumers know that this will happen. When you get into a PA, there is no more compactness and lightness. It's all space and comfort. I still have my Outbacks and would love to see the 360 on an Outback if it's possible. I love Hobie's innovation, but it seems like their QA is lacking a bit. We shouldn't see these problems for the type of money we spend on a kayak.

    • @rainzer0
      @rainzer0 3 года назад

      @@TomyTekOutdoors the first time I saw the demo I was blown away. It was so nibble, seemly defying laws of physics. But that price point was on a different level. It probably only works on the PA at the moment because it is so stable. I can imagine a revo 13 just flipping over when the drive is sideways.

  • @PebblesChan
    @PebblesChan 4 года назад

    I don’t know much about the Hobie pedal drive but it looks like distortion or axle hole registration issue with the front plastic molding.
    Why does the fin have to lock in to the front position?
    If the fins need to be kept forward why aren’t some waterproofed magnets used rather than the friction between the metal and plastic pieces?
    This will allow the fins to easily be locked into and bumped out of position as required.

    • @TomyTekOutdoors
      @TomyTekOutdoors  4 года назад

      You need the front fin to at least be locked in place. They will hit each other if the front is not in place, but the back is in place. This is the problem I was having. A magnet would be much better. I'm concerned about the plastic eventually wearing away too much and it not holding in place at all. We'll have to see how they change it on the next revision. Thanks for watching.

    I bought a Mirage 180 kick up drive online. I couldn't believe I actually found one to buy so when I got it, the fins would not kick back. I thought I had gotten ripped off with a knock off on Ebay, but the seller had great reviews. The drive looked real and brand new, but no matter what, I could not get the fins to kick back at all. I was already writing a pissed off email and about to call PayPal to cancel my 4 bi-weekly payments when I decided to pull out my old Mirage 180 non-kickup drive and started noticing differences. I then decided, if I break a mast, I break a mast. So, I decided to knock the sh*t out of it and what do you know, it actually kicked back. I was in awe, but I didn't understand why I had to do that to get it to kick back. Now that my hand is bruised, it's starting to kick up a little better. And this is after I completely removed the plastic retention screws too. Thank you so much for explaining this issue to me.
