- Kodak Tmax 3200 First try in my Film Photography.
After my Wife asking me if I could make a portrait of our Dog, George, I went to work on making a portrait and thought it would make a good video to put on the channel.
I have a roll of Kodak Tmax 3200 so I thought I would use it for this portrait.
I also decided to use my Video Lights as constant lighting for George. I do have studio strobes and lots of lighting gear but I wanted to keep it simple for the channel. Not everyone has Studio Flash gear but we can all get hold of bright lamps and a reflector.
I used the 3200 as I needed to use a faster shutter speed and a smaller aperture. And the lights are not that bright. If I used a wider aperture the chances of George moving once I had focused on his eye was probable! I wanted his whole face from nose to neck in focus. Also the faster shutter speed gave me less motion blur if he moved slightly. So the 3200 was a good choice here. And I wasn't going to be put off by grain. I like grain.
My wife loved the portrait. Whoop!

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how you Shoot Film like a BOSS..!!
👏👏👏
Thanks Tony!
Awesome, the moment when you showed the photo to your wife is priceless. You showed exactly why you should print your work.
Thanks Bas. Yeah she was surprised!
Gorgeous :-) He's a darlin. "Little Shit......tzu" That was funny :-D
Ha ha. I could have paused longer... 😂
Shoot Film Like a Boss 😂 I think you made your point very well 😂
Mega brownie points for you, for doing something so sweet for your wife.
Ha ha. I still had to wash up
George is beautiful and so sweet. An excellent surprise for your Mrs too!
Thanks Andrew! She was overwhelmed.
Shoot Film Like a Boss Yes, it was so lovely to see and actually brought a tear to my eyes too. It was a beautiful image really well created and presented.
I laughed out loud on the train just now watching this. Great photograph! Reminded me of the time I tried to photograph my cat with a 5x4! It didn’t end well....
wife's reaction was great.. smashing house youve got too.. sumthin must be going right :O)
I love George licking his nose, so sweet.
He's always licking his nose!
This is ideal photography, fun, experimental, exploring the art of the possible, and making images that get an emotional response. Keep doing what you enjoy, its great to watch.
And that, is what it is all about...
Lovely, well done.
Thanks Timmy!
Great job! Love the grain and the classic style of the square format with the heavy light falloff around the subject. You guys will treasure that print for many years!
You've inspired me to take some proper portraits of my dog as well. I expect a similar reaction from my wife haha
Thanks. Turned out okay didn't it.
Brilliant well worked print nice1 👍 But I have to say you were upstaged by the cuteness of George 😂😂
Suppose if your template was made of metal you could get the weight you need, I.e. like an old squaring frame our Dads used. Thanks so much for taking us into your darkroom.
It would. And I've thought about it. Thanks
George is just beautiful
Absolutely loved this one!
You created a work of love in every way.
Thanks Wendy!
oh man still haven't tried the tmax 3200

1:1 for 18 minutes. Agitation was 5 turns every minute.
I didn't end the video with any thanks but as always thanks to those

I have always thought you should have named your dog "Ilford" I mean he is b&w,,,,,,,Anyway a really nice watch ,really enjoyed it.:):)
Ha ha. I can imagine shouting Fomapan across the park.
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss call him T-Max everyone will think he is called Max anyway :D
Kentmere!!! 🐶
Amazing work and the outcome, priceless. Thanks for sharing this very special moment.
Thanks Mark.
I love it! One of the Best RUclips videos I ever seen. And RUclips is my TV these days lol...
Wouldn't it be funny it the one thumb down for the video was by George haha.
...
Good video, great husband!
I found out. It was the cat next door 🙀
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss ha!
what a good work I think your dog love your because he help you with the picture Best regards
I really love what you do. I hope one day to have a home darkroom! For now, a black bag and a film scanner do it for me. Keep putting up the great content, please!
I like the Ilford Pan 400 film - used it quite a bit when I was in South America. Prints came back with a lovely vintage look. Used it again upon returning to the UK and the results weren't quite as good, so maybe it's a film that comes alive under good quality light. Great portrait of George. Good work.
Thanks. Probably the development process made the difference between the two labs ?
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss maybe, Jessops developed the first rolls (or sent it to a 3rd party lab as it was b&w) and I did the UK shot stuff at home. But the light was great in SA and awful here... Maybe a combination of both- looking forward to seeing your results and your feedback, it's not a very well known film.
@@disarmsox You're right though, the light is different also. Interest eh?
So cute and awsome work :) I've few of your videos in the darkroom it's very very very interesting for me and very nice artistic work. Thank you for your videos. Hello from France :)
Merci Arnaud pour les bons mots. Et bonjour du Royaume-Uni.
I love this channel!
cracking video mate, loved it
Thanks for the shout out :o) Good luck with the Lady Grey. Sorry it's not tea! LOL
Andrew West
Ha, thanks Andy.
Lovely shot. A print to treasure!
It is. Thanks Stephen. Hanging proud.
How's amazing you have done! I love your video so much! Thanks!
Greeting from Hong Kong.
Thank you Kenneth!
Brilliant. You love your craft and the results prove it👌
Cheers Eltin
only just found you.....enjoyed fully from start to finish great vid.
Your wife's reaction is the best 😀 good job
Ha ha. It was! She still cried after!
Really nice shot. I like the fact you decided to crop it square, even though it was shot on 35mm.
Well done to George for putting up with daddy being so demanding too! Haha
I just wanted neck up but shot wider for more options in the crop.
Great Work!
What a wonderful video! I smiled the whole way through! I love my dog, photography and darkroom work so this video just hit all the right places 👍
Thanks Jim!
Great video! nice photo of the dog!
And the dog is lucky that he has such a good mistress!:-)
by the way, I like the beer on the desk!:-)
A beer in the darkroom goes down well. Too many and it's hard to find the door out :)
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss Hahahaaaa...your answer makes me laugh!:-)
:)
Now I know what to get my wife for Christmas! I just wish my dog would stand still like George. Great video as always. Charlie.
I'm lucky. He does sit still as he doesn't like the height. Yet feels safe with me, but won't jump off!
What a great video! I'm also a film photographer, also from the south of the UK, also shoot my dogs and horses on film, also love beer and also have limited space for my darkroom. Really inspiring stuff!
Fantastic video! Really enjoyed that. As a fellow Olympus OM10/20 shooter myself (amongst others) and as a fellow canine photographer of sorts this was a great watch. What I don't have is a darkroom! I enjoyed seeing your use of metal brackets and so on as part of the printing process. Very informative. You have a new subscriber!
Thanks Ted. I get by with simple things, IE the brackets and cardboard templates. I am loving the om20. Thanks to a sub that sent me the OM10 to try out, otherwise I wouldn't have looked at Olympus. Great little cameras.
A perfect gift.
Such an amazing video, loved every minute of it. You're a master at what you do mate. Oh and a beautiful house too :-)
Thank you very much mate
Best episode!
Thanks Johan!
Been up late making prints. I know it's bad when I catch an upload of yours 15 minutes just posted. Sun's coming up in L.A. soon haha.
Beautiful work! Thanks for sharing the end. Kinda hits home thinking about how fleeting our time can be with pets, in making a print that will outlast them many times over. Yet making something wonderful for your wife and home.
Thanks Omnesilere. Enjoy your sleep!
A like and a comment before watching the video. Was waiting for this ❤️
Ha thanks Gianni!
Once again another great vid!!!! So great to see her reaction....Great job!!
Thanks Andy!
OMG, this was just amazing!!!
Crackin shot, well done sir. I especially liked your wife's reaction, that's what it's all about. Now you got me ordering the tmax 3200.
The sharpness and contrast surprised me. I've still to play more with it. Thanks!
How many people were whistling at the computer screen so George would turn his head ha ha. Great videos - stumbled across your channel the other day and now subscribed!!
Ha ha, thanks!
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss Most welcome!!
Love this stuff thanks for putting together amazing videos!!!
Beautiful work. Really heartwarming stuff.
New sub here. End result was superb, great work and a joy to watch!
Cheers Chris.
I love the reaction at the end!
And have fun with the rolls of Foma and Ilford! I know you're gonna use them well
Thanks Rob! I have a vid on those soon!
That's great mate! Really good portrait of George. I used to shoot a ton of pics of my dog, a little unpredictable, but well worth it. My son is my main focus now, been building a collection negs and prints over the last ten years, i ain't trusting digital anymore. Want to leave a collection for him when the day comes!
Good choice. I've lost tons of Digi pics over the years. Shame really.
Beautiful portrait of george :)
Thank you! Cheers!
Great Work 👍
Thanks Patrick!
Love the photo I have some T Max 3200 on order just for Christmas shots of my Family. enjoyed your Video to
Thanks Katharine! I imagine it's a good film for indoors!
I wish my cat would sit like that when I try and shoot him he is always running after me and my bird just likes pecking at my camera len's your got a good subject there rodger the dodging and the number 2 filter really made those eyes pop good work buddy
You running a zoo there Beau? Ha Ha! Thanks buddy!
This is really a beautiful portrait :).
Did you shoot at box speed of 800 ?
Well Done!
Thanks Andrew!
Nice episode.
Really enjoy to watch and learn some lightning setup for portrait. Great job.
Are you planning some tutorial how to use a flash with film camera? Or some ideas for portrait (still life) with flash, strobes?
I shall do at some point Almach99. If I can find a model!
great video, as always. Thanks
Thanks Paul!
hello and congratulations on your videos. I'm curious to know how you can develop and reuse a film that you used only half. A dedicated video would be nice. bye
I load the film in the camera. Shoot what I need. Then take the camera into the darkroom and open it. I then take scissors and cut the film off the reel. Then I can develop that exposed strip and put the film back in its container for another day. Hope this helps.
As a total softy dog lover who's just building a dark room that was most enjoyable . Our dogs all chocolate brown , I think she's gonna be hard to photograph ! BTW what ISO setting do you use on the camera with the 3200 film , I looked it up and it kinda says its an 800 ISO so Im now a tad confused
Just shoot it at 3200 and develop normally according the the manufacturers instructions. I've always used 3200 at that speed. It wouldn't be my go to film for portraits or scrapes. Street would be best suited or fast action such as a football match. For me I ended up with a contrasty print of George. I had better results with slower films that I pulled a stop and under developed a stop. For a less contrasty look.
Brilliant :)
Thanks redone!
Great video I'm not sure I could get my dog to be as good as George. I was wondering how much of each chemical do you make up for each session in the darkroom?
For general practice I'm not so fussy as long as my developer and fixer is still strong. As this was a print for my wife I mixed fresh chems just so I know I'm getting the best I could do. If that makes sense!
Shoot Film Like a Boss Thanks for the reply I also wondered about the quantity of chemistry you had in each tray. Would it be in and around a litre of each. Thanks again I’ve learned so much from your videos
@@adrianlong6701 Yes I fill the trays up with about a litre each or at least Just enough to cover the paper.
Curious, what did you think of p3200? I've had much better success with it over Delta 3200. I think it's maybe just that Delta doesn't like XTOL as much. I like the grain structure of P3200 better and it seems like it has more tone? I tend to shoot it at 1600 though. My only gripe is it's not in 120 format (or 4x5 but neither is Delta 3200).
Also the reveal was adorable and touching, nice work!
Well it's only a few frames I shot of the dog. I've yet to try the other frames on other subjects with more tone. I was just startled at the sharpness and contrast. But yet that could have been the 18min develop. So I'll have to play more with it but I do like the grain on the print which is evident more so on the background.
Indeed that grain looks gorgeous in as much as RUclips can show it. I think I like it better than if it was a grain free image honestly. I've made some P3200 prints and quite like the grain in print form. In fairness I don't think I've made any prints of my Delta 3200 shots so I perhaps oughta try it out!
@@m00dawg The grain also showed up more as I cropped in.
Hi, just curious: what film developer and time/temp did you use on the TMax 3200? Thanks for sharing your photography with the world!
In the comments Micah, XTOL, 18 mins, 20°, five agitations every minute. 🙂
Shoot Film Like a Boss Thank you!
OK. Now I will tell my wife I need a darkroom. And make prints from our beloved 'Fanny'.
That's the spirit! Hope you get one in return!
7:58 Aww look at his wee face lol
He's a cutie
The OM2n is the best piece of kit I’ve used, try using DELTA3200 at 1600 but develop at 3200 ! Amazing results
Yes, I developed it for 18 minutes in XTOL. Was thinking of shooting it at 3200 but trying 16 minutes instead.
Paper is so horrendously expensive now, you should not worry about a 'Tiny Bit of Crap' causing a white spot -- you can 'Spot it Out' with dye as i do !! I remember when 100 sheets Kentmere 10x8" glossy Fibre was £3 quids odd NOT £30 quids odd !
PS -- Wife was SO PLEASED I'm sure you were OK for a Cuddle that night !
£80 or so now Peter for 100 sheets.
😆 human responds to ‘cheese’ and dogs 🐶 to ‘sausage’ that’s good 😂
I have the OMG with the 50mm 1.8 Oly lens and 400mm Tokina :)
that's sweet
👍👍👍👍👍
😍👍
There is definitely a shortage of doggie based photo videos on youtube haha
ha ha, I've not looked!
you big softy !
Ha Ha. Have to be with George. He'll take my hand off if he feels threatened.
This video was enjoyed by our whole family since we have George's doppelgänger, Minnie, our dog, is identical to George. =)
Ha Ha... George was up all night. He's not well. But this morning he is jumping for joy and we are all tired! lol
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss I'm glad he's Ok. This is Minnie: facebook.com/photo?fbid=5195296890480495&set=a.450980331578865
You've been totally upstaged by George. This is the first photography video my wife has taken any interest in, she says "he's SO cute". I think she was talking about George, anyway!
Ahh, he's a good dog. He lost an eye since that video. I have another shoot with him a few weeks back.
Its really hard to take a picture of pets even with digital camera.
Sehr schönes Video. Dein Enthusiasmus steckt einen förmlich an.
Vielen Dank!
