i got to admit this camera is the best looking bridge camera ever. Its sexy in design. I do think the price is right for this. I'm going to be saving up for this! :)
You know, when you see images and video like this as an average camera user, you really wonder what all the fuss is about regarding sensor size, zoom, lenses etc etc. This is clearly a great camera. Thanks Lisa
I've been using my RX10 for 3 months, now. I picked it up for around $750, used on the FM buy, sell, trade forum and the condition was like new. Fantastic sharp still images and now the firmware update supports XAVC 50 bit video recording. The complaints about the "wobbly lens barrel" reference a trait of this bridge camera as well as many others from different manufacturers as a certain amount of play is necessary to have the correct amount of space for the lens to move through the zoom range without binding and to also consider climatic conditions for expansion and contraction. For those who do not want any movement get an interchangeable lens camera and add a prime lens, as even manual zooms have a degree of play when the zoom is external (barrel movement) vs. internal zoom. We need to "focus" on the practical and stop treating cameras like our personal crown jewels.... LOL
This is awesome. You should do more camera reviews like the NEX 7 and NEX 6. or maybe do a comparison. Also, the camera used to record this video is really good.
Behind all the advantages of this camera and all of its great feature, what im looking for is a camera that can deliver the most pigment of a picture but it doesn't cater a lot of space in your storage, if they can reduce the volume of there brilliant engineering not maximize there software, maybe the issue of taking a great picture will be blown away. For sure it'll be a groundbreaking experience even if you just have a 16gb memory. There's an old saying "That the best camera is the one you have with you" This saying needs an even more corresponding statement I guess, which is the missing piece
Great video as usual. I thought I heard you say something about 4k output. I understood that this only took 1080p pics and video ??? Do you think we will begin to see many new cameras this year that will shoot 4k?
thanks for rivewing a camera i like your reviews specialy laptops actualy sony rx10 is an amazing camera as all around family camera & its price is very reasonable as you didn't mension that the lens is actualy a carl ziess lens which anyone in photography knows how expensive & valuable it is & that's why the images are so good because as all photographers know it's the glass what hugely affects the quality but for an advanced amateur still nothing can replace dslr due to various reasons like the focus system for example but still a very nice camera with insane perfect lens thanks again & hope to see more camera reviews in the future
Lisa, could you do a smackdown between this and some mirrorless camera with a zoom lens? I still can't quite understand how the constant f/2.8 with a 1" sensor compares to a zoom lens with a bigger sensor.
See explanation here: /www.dpreview.com/previews/sony-cybershot-dsc-rx10/ Dpreview didn't finish a review but Cameralabs did do a comparison. You can check their review with comparison.
MobileTechReview Should I get a Canon DSLR or RX10?I dont like to carry a lot of lenses with me,especially when travelling.Or how does this compare with NEX-6?plz reply
Sadly though that most consumers have no clue what f2.8 actually means compared to f5.6 (which is the standard on the long end of most P&S) F2.8 indicates 4x more light compared to F5.6 or 2 ISO steps less which translates to far less grainy images.
That's not the full story though, a low f value means a shallower focal range. It's a balance between desired focal range, image quality (ISO value) and reduction of motion blur (shutter speed) all three are interlinked in their values.
cptwhite See here explanation with graph: www.dpreview.com/previews/sony-cybershot-dsc-rx10/. Sensor size is also a factor here for amount of light captured. Not really cheap though as dpreview points out and although you get better quality (especially for low-light and with zoom) the price diff is quite big.
There is no doubt that Sony hit a home run here. This is an incredible camera but it's still a point and shoot. At the top of the price range you have to wonder how many point and shooters will spring for the big bucks. Because of the relatively small sensor, I'd guess that most advanced amateurs and pros will overlook it. That will be their loss but I think it will happen. I think it would be a great back up camera, particularly for video.
I'm debating reviewing the RX100 II but it's been out several months and I'm not sure how many folks would be interested now. On another note, anyone else be interested in camera tutorials?
MobileTechReview hmm, yeah I might be a bit too ambitious :D I don't care if they are older models, as long as they are newer than 5 years old, maybe just a good SLR
Most people probably would find the smaller cheaper Stylus 1 good enough. Or maybe even pocket sized (lower image quality) SX280 especially if you need wider angle and more zoom and don't care as much about low-light. But if you don't mind the size and price then you get better low light performance and bit more resolution detail (10+% absolute). Seems indeed niche product ideal for journalists.
It looks a bit old fashioned and weird compared to Sony's own latest cameras and the FZ1000 but the quality is probably superior to the competition. When they restyle it I'll grab one
The camera's macro mode and the close focusing lens are pretty good, and I'm accustomed to using a 100mm portrait macro lens on my dSLR. It's particularly intriguing in a good way when doing wide angle macros-- I've gotten some very artistic photos and some helpful ones for up-close looks at the ports/camera lens/etc on the back of tablets and phones for our reviews.
Do you know anything about an upcoming new version of the RX10? I'm asking myself the same question, because there are a few areas where this camera could be improved, but I haven't heard any reliable rumors about a mark 2 version of the RX10. Have you heard anything about a new model?
I as well have not heard any rumors. It seems like the price point made the rx10 less popular among the other sony cameras. My hope is that they will put an APS-C sensor but keep the zeiss lens. If thats the case I'll wait for the next version
Hmm, yeah. A larger sensor would be nice for sure, but an APS-C sensor is probably out of the question. That would effectively turn in into a DSLR. But maybe we can dream about a micro four-thirds sensor? ;-) Personally I would love to see Sony include their better high bit rate video codec and enable the camera to record 4K in-camera without the need for an expensive and bulky external recorder. Oh, and include a battery charger in the box, of course!
DSLR + 24-70 f2.8 + 70-200 f2.8 amounts to roughly €5000 (Nikon or Canon gear). Not to mention the approx. 4,5 kg of weight. When it's not about pro grade images or very low light images I'd pick this little marvel any time over a DSLR.
zermomia I Disagree i shoot with a cannon dslr and have quite a few lenses but ever since I have got a MFT aka (Micro Four Thirds) camera I have not used my cannon as much.
sorry to tell you guys but since few years Sony is always disappointing ,you pay high price and you end up with something made in Philippine ,the product or the rendering of it is really low.
I am adding this comment for every one who has a SONY RX10 camera. Any RX10 camera that has wobbley lens barrel IS FAULTY and should be returned to the dealer for a new one. I should also add that Sony corporation does a massive scale injury to all people involved including buyers, dealers and service centers when does not come up with a clear statement over repeated question in its forums worldwide. I personally encountered 5 wobbley RX10 before came cross a healthy one which has no wobble no matter if the camera is on or off. One wonders if this camera is a corporate joke or what it seems to be - a top notch camera!
In this prosumer & semipro range of cameras. Though is not specificaly a video only targeted camera. Sony's semi video cameras nearly has no competition especialy when including good audio into the camera. To the point i even ended up with a sony camera when it's not a brand i support.
Made in China?? You got to be kidding me. I thought Sony was a japanese company? I'm not bashing the quality by any means this of course is a great device, but seeing that "Made in China" really makes it not worth the premium price!!
i got to admit this camera is the best looking bridge camera ever. Its sexy in design. I do think the price is right for this. I'm going to be saving up for this! :)
You may also want to check out Lumix FZ200, it's a great camera too. 24-600mm f2.8!

Are you able to do a comparison between the Sony RX10 and the new Panasonic FZ1000? Would love to hear your thoughts on them.

Thx Lisa

now that you bring up sony, do you think is still a good idea to get a vaio flip 15 now that the vaio line has been discontinued?
If the Vaio Flip 15 has the features you need and want, I'd still buy one. Service and support will continue even after the brand changes hands.
Hey Lisa! Please make a video showing the best DSLR under $300, i really would like to know, i can't decide what to get
Wow, it's pretty hard to find a DSLR under $300!
MobileTechReview hmm, yeah I might be a bit too ambitious :D I don't care if they are older models, as long as they are newer than 5 years old, maybe just a good SLR

Great vacation camera too: very good image quality, long zoom, not too big, fast lens for low light.
What about the battery back if i shooting video?
It looks a bit old fashioned and weird compared to Sony's own latest cameras and the FZ1000 but the quality is probably superior to the competition. When they restyle it I'll grab one
how good is that fixed lens when it comes to macroshots?

It is a new entry in Sony's R series line of cameras.
I just got the Nikon D3300
PLEASE DO A VIDEO ON THE NEW PANASONIC GH4!
I'd love to review the Panasonic GH4, we're working on getting a hold of one.
MobileTechReview THANKS!
Please do a review of your cat!
GREAT
MobileTechReview Is it good for shooting movies?
I want it
goddamn i love sony cameras. (i realize how open to ridicule i am right now)
Sony may be hurting in other areas, but it's hard to deny they're doing some amazing things with cameras.

Lisa , give me one :)
cat videos !!
Trouble with digital cameras is, like cell phones, after two years they're useless.
