For my RUclips videos I use a T3i with a Tamron lens for less than the cost of this. The T3i is a very solid alternative for less money. Good review though. I love your videos.
I purchased the RX10 about a year ago to use as a video camera to video lectures from the back of a hall in low light. I was new to digital photography having lost interest on the conversion to digital camera and I did not understand about sensor sizes assuming the RX10 would be full frame because of the price. I also did not understand that 2.8 does not mean 2.8 with smaller sensors. So for a while I was feeling rather jibbed. However, I decided to persevere with the camera and get what I could out of it. And I must say the more I use it the better I like it. It has taken some really good footage under adverse conditions. The auto focus is good, the image stabilization is good, the light meter is good but you have to be careful when to use the spot setting and when not to. In doubt use the wide setting. I like the slow zoom; if you are projecting on to a large screen you do not want fast zooming. One pleasant surprise is the quality of the on-camera mic which does a very good job for what it is. I find the camera rather difficult to hold because of the weight and small grip but I am getting more used to that. If I buy another camera for video I would probably buy a Panasonic G7 but I am certainly gaining more respect for the RX10 and getting some very good results. And as you say, the lens comes with the camera price and the lens is flexible enough for my needs. Thank you very much for your review.
Congratulations, you've made the most complete and well thought out review of this camera on the entire internet. I need to get two cameras for doing some interviews and have been debating between this, the rx100 ii, the a6000, and the 70d. You helped a lot, thanks.
Thank you, guys, for this video. I didn't know about this camera before. And now I have a choose between Canon 650d and this. About the sensor screen: I think Canon is more comfortable for me, but for the price? I do not exactly know. But thank you very much for the reviews. They always so good.
Great review! I was amazed by this camera when it was announced because of the great features compared to a DSLR, the built in lens that it comes with is quite impressive with the 2.8 aperture all the way to 200mm! And also the hability to record 1080p@60fps wich is something I wish my Canon had! Sometimes I get frustrated when I'm making videos on the go and keep switching lenses, this camera is better suited for this scenarios where you are just recording while you travel
what about the canon 600d 70d and others that have 3x digital zoom but it just used different pixels not loosing quality but it removes those lines that look like AA
You should take a look at Panasonic micro 4/3. You say that there´s no better camera for 1000 $ dollars while GH3 or even the G6 are cheaper and have a much better image quality than the RX10. Aliasing and moiré are much lower than in Canon cameras (lower even than in the BMPCC), they have better low-light capabilities, etc...
Kai Liu A Panasonic G6 with a few classic prime lenses is still a better option regarding video quality. Of course, the RX10 is a good "all in one" option, but it´s video quality is not very good.
videobyanu ive got the D7100 and man does it beat out any of canons cropped sensored cameras. I dont really get why people are still bashing Nikon for its video quality
videobyanu dude, I am a Canon user personally however Nikon have been coming out with some great video capabilities in their DSLRs lately. Each to their own.
I disagree, when Nikon releases the D4s, they name it as having "professional" video, when it can only shoot 1080p? It has the same aliasing problems as the D4, poor colour representation and mushy details. I take your point that Nikon's aps-c cameras may be catching up, but to say that the video capabilities are "great" is an over statement.
Hi. During recording, you can make changes of ?: ISO, shutter speed, WB, Exposition compensation EV, activate and deactivate zebra and focus pickin, change to manual focus and back? Can you select the type of focus, like a wide and pointing zone? And in low light, with a led light going okay?
I use my humble Nikon P7700 for weddings and events. Not superior but for run & gun stuff and full manual video control, never leave for an event without it!
I have watched dozens of your videos and today I just realized that I should just subscribe. Wirklich gut! Hey, denks du das Sony gibt den a6000 dieses XAVC-S Codec?
Great Review like always, goodbye my Nikon D600, I will not miss the plaqued Dust/Oil splatters nor the Moire. Great for pics but horrible for video. And landscape shooters.....enjoy removing all the splats in post, anything above F8 and bamm come all the spots up. The Rx 10 is amazing and I don't miss my D600, 24-70 f2.8 and 70-200 f2.8. Finally Canon seem to be miles ahead in video over nikon.
We are in June 2014 now and the Lumix FZ1000 has been released. How does it compare to the Sony RX10 ? isn't it the same thing almost but plus the 4k capability ?
Thank you so much for your valuable tutorials.... I'm very interested in cinematography. so, i want to purchase a DSLR Camera in my budget. So, i'm preferring to go for Canon 1200D. It come with 18-55mm and 50-250mm lens... what makes the difference ? Is it good? Can i go for it? If yes, Please upload a video regarding best video settings for it and Lens which i get for this product.... If no, tell me the best camera in my budget and upload best video settings for it and Lens which i get for this product. I will be eagerly waiting for your upload... Thank you very much.....
The RX10 is 1300 USD in the US more expensive than the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema camera, the Panasonic GH3, and approaching the price of the GH4 (which shoots 4K). At these prices, it's hard to think of any other these as "entry level". And since so many pros are doing incredible work with low-end DSLRs, I'm not sure I'd recommend that a newbie rush out and buy such a pricey camera.
Hey anyone can help me ? I'm soon getting the Canon 70D and I'm looking for a solide tripod with a camera slider (and a ball-head) . Anyone can suggest me a good one ? I have low budget soo, I'm looking for a good quality and low price at the same time. Please help !
Right now the best camera image quality wise for about 500$ is Panasonic G6. It has 1080 24p/25p/30p/60p, focus peaking and other nice features. It will blow this sony out of the picture with ease.
GH2 or 3 fur mich. Better lenses, and choice of lenses, and better options, not to mention better quality video and the ability to hack. Educate oneself and invest as time goes on to improve one''s videography.
Panasonic G6 or Sony a6000, low price with tons of features. The Sony has incredible low light perf. and the G6 embed a lot of video features. Both are free form moire and aliasing.
that is true but in that range of camera's nothing has changed. The only real difference between the 600D and the 650D/ 700D ( which are basically the same camera with a different name) is the auto focus in video mode ( which is unusable anyway, and creative filters the no on ever uses) so as a first camera spend less money buying the 600D so that money that you save, can go on lens and other things. That's why i recommend it
kevi drresser 60d body only = 650 USD then ad the lens cost (1900 + 2010 usd for 24-200mm f.2.8 stabilized) = 4560 USD. The rx10 with same lens = 998 USD. Even if you got the camerabody free, the rx10 would be cheaper. And it has XAVC S coding.
You can download Magic Lantern so you can record RAW and HDR on the t2i. A DSLR is more adaptable. I was just saying the 17-40 as a example. you are able to purchase hundreds of lenses compared to the rx10. the T2i is $200 used and the T3i is $400 brand new. this leaves you with $700 or $500 on a lens. if you are planning to spend $900 on a camera that will be obsolete in 5 years then go ahead. it takes a while for a lens to age. So, once the T2i, or any DSLR goes out of date, then all you would have to do is buy a new body. sure the rx10 my be a good camera. But, a DSLR is a better choice for a beginner filmmaker and for the long run. Lars Isaksen
On the same level the Olympus Stylus 1 is much more cheaper. Same quality (specs at least) and type of lens (28-300 F2.8) in a small body. DSLR. They'are dead man. The body may be cheaper (a T4 you say) but buy a good lens kit 24-70 and 70-200 and you'll spend a fortune. Here you got everything. Not good, it's pretty good. Of course it not an Alexa, or F5, but if you have the market for this cameras then you're watching the wrong videos man...
Get an EOS M for a couple of hundred euros. Buy an off brand lens adapter for 30 euros. You still have about 700 euros to buy any canon compatible lenses.
I didn't like how the footage looked from the rx10, it was muddy looking, I think hacked GH2 is better as it has better quality than the 5D mark iii and its t3i cheap, its not the best in low light but I think its almost perfect.
Here is the deal boys and girls; This camera would have cost about $ 15,000.00 12 years ago and if you are complaining about the cost of the RX10 and what it does for the money, then you are probably in the wrong business/hobby. That's the difference of being Professional and Amateur, amateur like 80% of the You Tubers, that think it's so expensive and the Pros think sh@# that's a lot for so little money.
After seeing this video I really cannot see why this would be the best or even a very good videocamera and around 1000$ I do not consider "entry level". My guess is that this was a paid commercial for Sony. Shame on you F&J if you did get paid for liking the DX10. Already a Nikon D3300 with two lenses is cheaper and certainly some HD videocamera's are. Bad video on a good channel. Please don't do this again :)
your attention to detail and the excellence you bring to your videos and production is very much appreciated and encouraging.
For my RUclips videos I use a T3i with a Tamron lens for less than the cost of this. The T3i is a very solid alternative for less money.
Good review though. I love your videos.
Jay Bates Your videos are really well done! Love the shirts! :)
Freeman LaFleur Thank you, I appreciate it :)
good means of advertising. You got me to go check out one of your vids. then I subscribed.

who makes that? cannon,... sony?

DANKE!

nice review. sony is now on my wish list thanks to you. the constant f2.8 & 60fps@1080p clinched it for me

Well done video. I'd love to see Fenchel & Janisch do a review of the new Lumix GH4. It's quite incredible.
Superb video! What would produce better image quality on the RX10: AVCHD 25p or AVCHD 50p ? Thanks, and greetings from Brazil.
what about the canon 600d 70d and others that have 3x digital zoom but it just used different pixels not loosing quality but it removes those lines that look like AA
Thank you for making and sharing this very well-made and thorough video.

Sehr gutes Video! Man sieht wie viel Mühe ihr euch immer macht :)
the D3300 would probably be better for any new Photographers or Videographers, because of that 24mp sensor and great ISO performance
>using nikon for video
what the fuck are you on about
videobyanu ive got the D7100 and man does it beat out any of canons cropped sensored cameras. I dont really get why people are still bashing Nikon for its video quality

Just read this.
WHAT CAMERA did you use to film this video? At the part when you were showing the camera in a studio or something.
Hi. During

SimonPyro1 Da Feuerwerk meist sehr hell ist wirst du vermutlich, wie geschrieben, nicht höher als ISO 400 gehen müssen bei einer Blende von F/2.8.
I have watched dozens of your videos and today I just realized that I should just subscribe. Wirklich gut! Hey, denks du das Sony gibt den a6000 dieses XAVC-S Codec?
Can You please make a Review of the Panasonic Lumix FZ1000?
Macht bitte eine Review zur FZ1000
Great review mate.
Will you ever do a review on Panasonic GH3 or GH3, they seem to be very capable cameras too. Thx
I dont get it why sony uses 1440x1080p in MP4 modes! My HX100 had the same issue. Just a feature which makes no sense.
I love your accent so goddamn much.
***** German. Im german. He is german. Everybody is german. Opfer.
Great review and nice footage of Bangkok. ;) look me up next time you're in the city.
thanks great review! Why not a Canon eos 70d instead?
I used to shoot the video for Nikon d800, but now shoot only blackmagic pocket cinema camera. BMPCC very good camera!!!
Spot on review. Most people will be faster A to B in a Golf GTI than an exotic sports car...same with pictures/video and cameras.
Thanks for the info. is the Sony DSCRX10 HDMI Clean?
Great Review like always, goodbye my Nikon D600, I will not miss the plaqued Dust/Oil splatters nor the Moire. Great for pics but horrible for video. Can u make a review of the RX10 mark ii also ?
Have you tried the RX10iii? Do you still stand by this 3 years later?
Does this have any overheating issues like the Sony NEX line?
great review
We are in June 2014 now and the Lumix FZ1000 has been released. How does it compare to the Sony RX10 ? isn't it the same thing almost but plus the 4k capability ?
Sorry but we can't test every camera out there and speculating doesn't help anybody.
Get a used 550D body for dirt cheap, install magic lantern and you still have enough change for a nice lens/mic/tripod.
Thank you so much for your valuable tutorials....
I'm very interested in cinematography. so, i want to purchase a DSLR Camera in my budget. So, i'm preferring to go for Canon 1200D. It come with 18-55mm and 50-250mm lens...

If yes, Please upload a video regarding best video settings for it and Lens which i get for this product....
If no, tell me the best camera in my budget and upload best video settings for it and Lens which i get for this product.
I will be eagerly waiting for your upload... Thank you very much.....
Can you plug in headphones and listen while recording to check the audio or can you only listen to audio in playback mode?
Yes, you can monitor audio live, which is why I chose this model. You have to be recording, though, to do a sound check, just FYI.
I know this is old but what tripod are you using in this video?
More vids plz
Sony A77 vs Sony RX10? Is it worth trading my Sony A77 to the RX10?

is the lens parfocal? on this or the mark ii? Thx :)
Very nice review
Sony nex 5r could be a better choice, since it has about the same quality but interchangeable lenses and a bigger sensor (i think?)
Beautiful video!
Hey anyone can help me ? I'm soon getting the Canon 70D and I'm looking for a solide tripod with a camera slider (and a ball-head) . Anyone can suggest me a good one ? I have low budget soo, I'm looking for a good quality and low price at the same time. Please help !
How to add athmosphere into the picture.
can i create an profile s-log on this camera?
can the lens be replaced?
Good review
Best Camera for beginners... RX10?
*checks price on amazon*
Nope.
hahaha i did the same thing
So true
Exactly
You guys would think they'd get "beginners" don't have a fucking GRAND to drop on a camera.
Review the Sony PXW-Z100 please?
this or sony a6300? both had same price
was this filmed with the rx10?
It's not the best. But is nikon d3100 good for beginner ?

Is it better than Canon 7D?
correct, when i zoom in... focus isn't as sharp
thanks
I think Sony A6000 would be a better choice. Only downside is that it does not have audio input or output.
impressing clip...
U may also refer canon 600D
GH2 or 3 fur mich. Better lenses, and choice of lenses, and better options, not to mention better quality video and the ability to hack. Educate oneself and invest as time goes on to improve one''s videography.

whats wrong with the 70d
On eBay you can get a used RX10 I for around $400.
Buy a Nikon D3300! It's a DSLR and damn-ass cheap :D
It records in 60p too, but has a bigger sensor :)
Best camera review
i would go for the t3i :D it's much cheaper
yh i agree the t3i was my first camera and still world recommend it to anyone starting out.
it's a great beginner shooter camera. :D
that is true but in that range of camera's nothing has changed. The only real difference between the 600D and the 650D/ 700D ( which are basically the same camera with a different name) is the auto focus in video mode ( which is unusable anyway, and creative filters the no on ever uses)

That is my next camera when I have the moolah!
cool video
Lumix G6...
T3i for me
Nope. Canon t3i, t2i, 7d, 60d, Sony a57, a77. All great plus they are MUCH cheaper.
kevi drresser 60d body only = 650 USD then ad the lens cost (1900 + 2010 usd for 24-200mm f.2.8 stabilized) = 4560 USD.
The rx10 with same lens = 998 USD.
Even if you got the camerabody free, the rx10 would be cheaper. And it has XAVC S coding.
im not saying you will get the same thing. but you can get just as good quality for cheaper
canon t2i used for $200 and a used 17-40 for $500
kevi drresser the 17-40 is a f4 lens... and the t2i has avc recording, not the same quality as the rx10...
The 17-40 is not stabilized either.
Lars Isaksen
a 1000 usd fore a camara ...... NOT for beginners
BushcraftMilo hell yeahh not for beginners
about to blow my scholarship money on one of these cameras 😧
Gh4
in my opinion your smart phone will be the best for beginner. (that's what I did)
On the same level the Olympus Stylus 1 is much more cheaper. Same quality (specs at least) and type of lens (28-300 F2.8) in a small body. DSLR. They'are dead man. Of course it not an Alexa, or F5, but if you have the market for this cameras then you're watching the wrong videos man...
There'll never be a perfect camera as long as all 'eggs are not put in one basket'. Period.
Get an EOS M for a couple of hundred euros. Buy an off brand lens adapter for 30 euros. You still have about 700 euros to buy any canon compatible lenses.
He said 1,000-dollars, not euros - but it is a point, the EOS M is probably one of the most underestimated cameras around.
for 800 bucks u can get waaaay better. u guys r off ur rocker
***** omg! they even wrote, that they didn't get paid for doing this video!
there is one simple answer panasonic gh4
After seeing this video I really cannot see why this would be the best or even a very good videocamera and around 1000$ I do not consider "entry level".
My guess is that this was a paid commercial for Sony. Shame on you F&J if you did get paid for liking the DX10. Already a Nikon D3300 with two lenses is cheaper and certainly some HD videocamera's are. Bad video on a good channel. Please don't do this again :)
around 1000 $ are u kidding me !!!!! i could buy a professional Nikon , Canon DSLR with that ...
do u think a beginner might spend 1k on a camera !!
YOU CALL THAT ENTRY-LEVEL ? :') Jeeeeez you grow money on trees ?
LAME, the best for beginner is GOPRO !
The GoPro is a useful second body but the fixed wide angle lens makes it a poor choice as an only camera for general videography.
your accent sound like you are force to speak.
Ripoff
