What a great guy. Ahead of his time and sharp as a tack well into his 80s. Keep on rocking, Dudley.

I loved Dudley and spent time working at The Theatre in Chipping Norton where he wrote the Panto along with Murray Melvin - such a Gent I was a 17 year old innocent and he was kind funny and gentlemanly - helped me build up my confidence. Thank you Dudley I will always remember you (this was just before Lovejoy took over) Really good panto's on 2 levels - fun for the kids and VERY rude for the adults!!!! Love You x

I have a lot of time for this guy; great actor, funny, and remorselessly intelligent.

I know he did so much more but i can't see Dudley without seeing Tinker, watched an episode of Lovejoy last night, brilliant character.

That is really quite moving and yes, I get that geezer thing totally now. In the dynamics of the situation, I understand Dudley was not Joe's ideal choice for the role for physical reasons, but his grasp of the character indicates a superior understanding, and presumably portrayal, much as I enjoy Paul Mcenery's portrayal. Mr Sutton was evidently a likeable man. Peace be to you, Sir.

Thank you for posting this, I really enjoyed Dudley Sutton`s account of Joe Orton`s play. I loved the film, but it is my only experience of the play. So now I must see it in another form. Joe Orton`s writing was a breath of fresh air.

Mind is obviously as sharp as his baby-face is soft. Lovely old man: the definition of the enfant terrible: full of mischief but not a trace of malice.

Actually I loved the film. I love Dudley but think he's wrong about the character portrayed in the film. For me the Mr Sloan is portrayed absolutely right . A straight or bi who is the absolute user and opportunist, and uses his sexual magnetism like a weapon against those of a lesser intelligence , against those with more money and a place to stay and seemingly normality
. He was always going to be transitional with the intention of leaving just before his stay became unwelcome. Only this time he met a set of people who though less intelligent were more cunning , and placed him in a no win situation. I'm from Leicester myself only half a mile from Where Joe Orton was born and grew up. He remains my great mentor in terms of my thinking and sense of humour. thanks joe .

RIP Dudley Sutton, aka Lovejoy's Tinker, dead aged 85. I once saw him in the Holloway Road near Highbury Corner, he was with a friend. He died in his sleep after a short battle of cancer’.

Saw him getting out a black cab near Green Park many many evenings ago. He was flamboyantly dressed and a bit intoxicated (good on him.) Wish I'd said hello and paid him a compliment. Somehow just couldn't think of the right words. RIP Mr Sutton!

Dudley, have long admired your work, enjoyed "The Boys" and the "Re-union of the Boys."your best was Mr Dick in David Copperfield. Hitherto a marginal comical character that I didn't really "get".there is this scene you do at the crunch time of the plot. you are on the left side of the screen, back to camera, dimly lit; all weak aspects, then you say that line, "Hire a horse and ride to Canterbury." Your timing and delivery is impeccable; it serves to galvanise and inspire, the resolution flows from that. "Hire a horse and ride to Canterbury." has become my mantra when the crocodiles are out to get me.Thanks and best wishes,Peter Stamp

An EXACT contemporary of the late, great, DEREK NEWARK.Sutton played along side Newark in many TV productions.HOW I WISH Derek had overcome his alcoholic demons and maintained his career as Dudley and, indeed, their fellow contemporary JULIAN GLOVER has.Have often wondered if Dudley has any anecdotes regarding Newark?. Would love to hear them if he has.I was only born in 65 and only came across Newark in 2014 watching a re run of rising damp on TV.This led me to postings on YT such as "The Human Jungle", a 60's series now on TV again..IN fact it was only last night I saw an episode with Dudley as a troubled boxer hating his dad, the wonderful BERNARD LEE. So for me Sutton and Newark are two sides of the same coin........although, from what I've read about Newark, he could be a VERY nasty individual in drink.
