You said it good. Story of Žirga Galvas is that Latvians are protestants and back in old days they were more educated then Lithuanians and those who lived near border would hire Lithuanian people to work on their farm and called them Horse head to say: stupid as horse. So basically Žirga Galvas = stupid. This days we took that saying and use it same as N world towards them 😅
I'm half Dutch and Lithuanian and I remember some of my Lithuanian friends having a joke about Poland. - A Polish guy goes to see a Lithuanian doctor and says to him: "I don't feel well and I don't know what it could be or what to do." The doctor says that he needs to go take a shit and smell it for 5 minutes. Few days later the guy comes back for a checkup and says that he feels way better and then the doctor replied by saying that he was feeling homesick.
Overall, three of us feel like brothers. We have suffered so much together that we all feel bounded to be nice and respect each other. Love from Latvia!

@@AdrijusGuscia In my defense as an Estonian, i am slow indeed but it is all comparative. You should be warned about our northern brothers. Especially on a hot day. So we are not the slowest by a long shot. Imagine every time you are to drive somewhere on a weekend there is a driver in front of you enjoying the scenery. Maybe it really is the warm weather we dont handle too well. i personally get agitated easily by meaningless movement so there is that;P.
The number plates of Latvian cars have the Latvian abbreviation of LV that we Estonians call "lisavarvas" or "extra toe". Fun anecdote about slow Estonians also: A zoo hired an Estonian as their security guard for the aquarium. The next day when every one came back to work they were surprised to see the all of the turtles were gone. When the other workers asked the Estonian what happened, he answered, "It all happened so fast. The gates opened and all of the turtles were gone so fast."
Theres also a joke that Lithuanias LT on car registration plates means “Läti taga” or “Behind Latvia” in english and for Poland’s PL is “Peale Leedut” which means “After Lithuania “
In Lithuanian we tell this exact same joke, but instead of just saying "this happened so fast" we make hand motion followed with a sound of something like a fast moving animal, gushing wind, just to add the dramatic effect, makes it more funny lol

Couple of weeks ago for the first time I visited Vilnius. It’s a nice city. I’ve been countless times to Klaipeda since it is closest big city to Liepāja, even closer than Riga. But on this trip to Vilnius, we went to hackatonas with my colleagues, and we spoke so much Latvian just adding “as” to each word. Also we were thinking maybe changing our names with ending “as”, so it would be Roberts as Robertas, Raitis as Raitas and Līva as Līvas :D but we couldn’t figure it out wether others would take it offensive, and we wanted to keep our good relationship with our partners. Being a Latvian who lives in 15 minutes driving distance from Lithuanian border, I've never heard a single joke about Lithuanians in my life. That's weird
I love these jokes, they make us more united and friendlier even in the worst situations. Thank god, we are not like Croatians, Bosniaks and Serbs - they even speak the same language, but they're willingly to literally destroy each other.
There's a saying: in Balkans there's always a conflict going on. Reasons change, ethnicities change, but Serbs are always somehow mysteriously involved. Very mysterious.
In Latvia, Lithuanians are definetely joked about among car guys. If you find out your car welded really badly, rust hidden, not fixed, or the door sills consist only of paint, filler and makroflex foam (true story) that probably Lithuanians fixed that for a quick profit. Or if you Total your car, and send it to scap yard: Dont worry, it'l probably get sent to Lithuania, they will do their welding magic, and it will be in Rumbula (district of Rīga where all the sleasy used car lots are) in couple weeks, with less milage then before, and a note saying "never crashed, never painted, perfect condition".
It's now know how they made the slow bullet scene in Matrix. If you zoom on bullets, it says: Made in Estonia Three estonians start fishing at 5:00 AM. At 10 AM one of them goes:"Fish don't bite". Im from Estonia and i drive a lot in Latvia and Lithuania for work. One time in Latvia police try to stop me but i saw the guy at the last moment and i stopped so far away from him he had to walk to like 100m or something. When officer finally came to my car and asked me why i did stopped earlier. I sed "Dont you see my licence plate im Estonian im slow" He starts laughing and sed "Get out of here" :D

I am Latvian and the joke about bmw was so good :D and many stolen bmws do indeed end up in Lithuania :D it is also pretty hard to low ball price with a Lithuanian when doing business, Latvians tend to be more flexible, Estonian joke about being slow is true, but in reality they are ahead in many areas in life of both Latvians and Lithuanians.

as an estonian, six-toed horse-headed latvians are really common in Valga, as the town is split. I've seen many there and they are quite a fascinating species.

There was this story going around in Lithuania: A few lithuanians were on vacation in Estonia, and they were driving home to Lithuania. And only 4km away from the Estonian Latvian border they get puled over by the Estonian police. The officer just checks the documents, but one lithuanian in the back of the car was very rude to the officer. The officer got angry and warned the lithuanians that they have to leave Estonias boarders in 24h or there will be trouble. Estonia is about 500km north from Lithuania, so it's little colder there. Here is a joke about it: An Estonian laying on the beach on the Lithuanian seashore, trying to have a sun-tan. A Lithuanian walks by and asks him: why are you so white, do you have no summer in Estonia? ; The Estonian answers - yes we do have summer, but I was working that day last year.
There are actually many jokes between Baltics. For example, estonians are very straight with polite questions. When someone ask estonian "how are you", then instead of saying "im fine", we actually start talking how we do - health is bad, prices are high, salary is small etc... 😁
This is also true for Latvians and many other nations. Asking "how are you" as a greeting without expecting a genuine answer is somewhat unique to the English language. In other languages it usually is meant as a real question. It's not that we are very straight and talkative (probably the opposite), we just don't ask "how are you" to everyone all the time, but when we do, it's usually to a person we already know and care to hear an answer, so answering with "fine" feels a bit like a brush-off. Even knowing how it works it takes some time to get used to if you visit an English speaking country.
Some stand up comedian was joking about samogetians (žemaičiai): There are no samogetians, those are just Latvians that yet didn't learn to speak Lithuanian.
Lithuanians calling Latvians horse heads because in the ancient times Latvian houses had a Jumis symbol on a roof and it’s looking a bit like two horse heads. A sign of fertility, Jumis is a symbol of the end of spring and summer - hence the twin sign. The two together represent harvest season and a sign of fortune and fertility.
The joke about latvians having 6 toes is really common in my area and the fact that latvian license plates have LV on them really endorses it. The LV stands for Lisa varvas as we tend to say, which just means extra toe
As a Latvians, we don't even have common expression for "extra toe", suppose Estonians have it because of being more remote, closed society, as a consequence, they had less genetical diversity and more genetical disorders (the same you can observe in Switzerland), so they had commonly used expression for those disorders...
As a Estonian I always say “Lithuanians are Estonians who are trying to speak Latvian” to my Lithuanian friends and they always laugh and say we are the iconic trio. I love my Baltic friends and so happy to have them as our neighbours😄 but surely we joke about Finns and russians more than our Baltic friends.
The "speed" jokes and "brain" jokes are in general going on a vertical line: * Every neighbor to the north is slower than you are * Every neighbor to the south is more "irresponsible"/"reckless"/"less thinking things through" Works well between Finland-Estonia, Estonia-Latvia, Latvia-Lithuania and possibly Lithuania-Poland/Belarus.

That's true for a lot of Central European cuisines. Polish and German cuisines, for instance, don't get very hot, unless you think of horseradish, and dill and caraway. And salt, of course, more than in today's western cuisine.
As a Lithuanian I have never had a reason to joke about Latvians or Estonians. I heard of zirga galva and the one about Estonians being slow, but never found them funny. But it probably would be healthy to roast each other every once in awhile :). I do have both Latvian and Estonian friends, but we mostly joke about other stuff, not related to our countries.
The slow Estonians (and Finns) jokes actually come from Russian. They originate from the Soviet period and are based purely on the strong Estonian accent when speaking another language (Russian at that time). The joke still exists but is fading among younger people as English becomes the new language the 3 communicate in with each other and the accents arent as strong and Estonia is economically significantly better off than the other two. Most of these "classic jokes" are literal translations from Russian jokes that date back to Soviet days or 90s. I doubt there are many recent jokes that dont draw from that period. Even jokes about Russians or anyone else are mostly from those days as places were less developed and the differences and stereotypes were more prominent. Same as jokes between English and Irish or jokes about Germans, French, Jews etc are always old and based on elements of historical stereotypes or language that most people nowadays are unfamiliar with. Well, except French... the French are just weird.

The problem is - many local Russians identify themselves as Russia. when we say something bad about Russia, they feel that we are insulting them directly. Sure sometimes we point out the harsh history, but only when they start claiming, how they "liberated", and "saved" us. Or how cool it was under Russian rule.

I don't know why, but when Estonians speak English or Russian, it seems to me that they speak more slowly than other nationalities. I wonder if this is a consequence of nature of Estonian language or the way non-finnic languages are perceived and taught in Estonia
On a cruise to Stockholm i met a Lithuanian man who was sincierly suprised that me and my friends (all Estonian) were speaking so fast and that we were so smart and everything

the joke about lithuanians stealing cars is absolutely true, i know plenty of people that have had their car stolen and the same car showed up again later in lithuania
That must have been quite a while back. When I moved to LT and registered my car there, Regitra did a very extensive check - looking at tbe VIN, taking pictures, asking for a declaration iin place of a sales contract. I had owned the car for more than ten years, bought it while living in Italy, then took it to Germany. The Germans back then hardly bothered to look at the car. Lesson learned: if you want to get a stolen car registered, do it in Germany. (Just don’t steal the car in Italy, that is the one thing they do check - following a bunch of incidents.)

I see a lot of cars in Vilnius with obviously fake plates - most are (purportedly) Dutch, Belgian or German, but they are obviously fake. The Dutch and Belgian ones use the wrong font, and on the German ones the district on the seal does not match the number (one I recall had a number with BI for Bielefeld, and a seal from Stuttgart, which has S). A TV series from Germany called Achtung Kontrolle implies that this is often done to import cars from abroad under their own steam - the car has been legally purchased, but the plates are fake and the car is neither registered nor insured. I have seen cars with such plates on used car portals, advertised as “neeksploatuotas Lietuvoje”, i.e. never used in Lithuania. They could have been purchased legally and just driven to Lithuania without registration, or they could have been stolen - hard to tell for sure unless you run extensive background checks.

We in Finland never make fun of Estonians, at least I don't. Actually, I don't make fun of any country, but it is great to have some self irony. Now this is Nordic elitism! 🙂 Instead we enjoy the similarities and differences of two closely related languages, like Estonian "Nahkhiirmees", which means Batman. "Nahk" means skin, "hiir" means mouse and "nahkhiir" means bat. In Finnish "nahka" means leather (or skin), "hiiri" means mouse, but we don't have a word "nahkahiiri", but "lepakko" for a bat. Both "mees" and "mies" mean man. So, "Nahkahiirimies" in Finnish would mean Leather Mouse Man. What a Superhero! Of course this works for both directions, many Finnish words sound funny to Estonian speakers.
As a Latvian, I call some of my fellow folks 'zirga galva' myself lol. But we also have a phrase that we sometimes tend to throw around at Lithuanians, which is 'nabaga Leits' meaning (translated literally) -- 'poor Lithuanian'. This joke refers back to the 1930s when Latvian economy was substantially more developed than Lithuanian, and many Lithuanian citizens (Polish as well actually) resorted to going to Latvia to find a job that is better paid.
I dont know many baltic jokes but here in Latvia there is always this envy towards our neighbours like "look, Estonia has slightly higher salaries and better healthcare! Damn.."

As a linguistic enthusiast I find Lithuanian language as a treasure of common European culture. So conservative and sophisticated. Lithuanian suffix 'as' is an equivalent of latin suffix -us, and antient greek -os.
My ex girlfreind was Lithuanian, and I used to live in Vilnius one winter, and I have been many times to Riga on work related trips. And I have Baltic ancestry my self so I love this knowing a lot about Lithuania and Latvia, I have never been to Estonia though, hopefully sometime though.....
I (Lithuanian) remember when I used to joke with my grandma that Latvians have 'žirgo galva' (horse head), but we never meant it in a harsh way. It was just like a tease in a way that you tease your brothers or sisters. I will always love my Latvian brothers and sisters!

It's not reverse card as "zirga galva" is because of making fun of Latvian language and its stressing which sounds fun for us. Like we say that "gyvatė" (snake) in Latvian is "džunglu šnūrs" (Latvianized "džiunglių šniūras/virvė" - "jungle's rope"). This is just an impression of Latvian language we have.

I've been to Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia last year and damn, all of these three are great countries. I've visited Vilnius, Panevėžys, Rīga and Tallinn (and also some smaller cities in Estonia while driving to Viru Raba). And well, from my observations people in Estonia were a bit slower, especially on the road. In Latvia people were driving like crazy and in Lithuania strangely roads (apart from Vilnius and Panevėžys) were pretty empty. In all of these I've met great people, only one was a bit unwelcoming (a young guy in some restaurant in Rīga), also one girl who was serving us food in Vilnius told me that I can't order more because it will be too much for me to eat (she could be right, but not gonna lie, I'd eat way more Lithuanian food). Also yeah, I'm a Pole. Please tell me jokes about Poles :D

As a lithuanian, I truly don't know any jokes about poles, apart from one about lithuanian poles. We used to have some bad blood with poles in the past however nowadays I would say that we really like poles and are happy to have you as a neighbour. Sending loads of love from Lithuania ❤️

I'm half Dutch and Lithuanian and I remember some of my Lithuanian friends having a joke about Poland.
- A Polish guy goes to see a Lithuanian doctor and says to him: "I don't feel well and I don't know what it could be or what to do." The doctor says that he needs to go take a shit and smell it for 5 minutes. Few days later the guy comes back for a checkup and says that he feels way better and then the doctor replied by saying that he was feeling homesick.

So we are not the slowest by a long shot. Imagine every time you are to drive somewhere on a weekend there is a driver in front of you enjoying the scenery. Maybe it really is the warm weather we dont handle too well. i personally get agitated easily by meaningless movement so there is that;P.

Couple of weeks ago for the first time I visited Vilnius. It’s a nice city. I’ve been countless times to Klaipeda since it is closest big city to Liepāja, even closer than Riga.
But on this trip to Vilnius, we went to hackatonas with my colleagues, and we spoke so much Latvian just adding “as” to each word. Also we were thinking maybe changing our names with ending “as”, so it would be Roberts as Robertas, Raitis as Raitas and Līva as Līvas :D but we couldn’t figure it out wether others would take it offensive, and we wanted to keep our good relationship with our partners. But in our trio it was and still is rolling on, and we still have a good laughs :D

In Latvia, Lithuanians are definetely joked about among car guys. If you find out your car welded really badly, rust hidden, not fixed, or the door sills consist only of paint, filler and makroflex foam (true story) that probably Lithuanians fixed that for a quick profit.

There was this story going around in Lithuania:

The officer got angry and warned the lithuanians that they have to leave Estonias boarders in 24h or there will be trouble. The guy that was rude to the officer earlier started laughing and said: "We are not estonians to drive 4km for 24h". :)

This is also true for Latvians and many other nations. Asking "how are you" as a greeting without expecting a genuine answer is somewhat unique to the English language. In other languages it usually is meant as a real question.
It's not that we are very straight and talkative (probably the opposite), we just don't ask "how are you" to everyone all the time, but when we do, it's usually to a person we already know and care to hear an answer, so answering with "fine" feels a bit like a brush-off. Even knowing how it works it takes some time to get used to if you visit an English speaking country.

The "speed" jokes and "brain" jokes are in general going on a vertical line:
* Every neighbor to the north is slower than you are
* Every neighbor to the south is more "irresponsible"/"reckless"/"less thinking things through"

That's true for a lot of Central European cuisines. Polish and German cuisines, for instance, don't get very hot, unless you think of horseradish, and dill and caraway. And salt, of course, more than in today's western cuisine.
Since estonians had no any impressive history or identity they had to search for it on the internet, that's how e-stonia was born.

As a Lithuanian I have never had a reason to joke about Latvians or Estonians. I heard of zirga galva and the one about Estonians being slow, but never found them funny. But it probably would be healthy to roast each other every once in awhile :). I do have both Latvian and Estonian friends, but we mostly joke about other stuff, not related to our countries.
The slow Estonians (and Finns) jokes actually come from Russian. They originate from the Soviet period and are based purely on the strong Estonian accent when speaking another language (Russian at that time). The joke still exists but is fading among younger people as English becomes the new language the 3 communicate in with each other and the accents arent as strong and Estonia is economically significantly better off than the other two.
Most of these "classic jokes" are literal translations from Russian jokes that date back to Soviet days or 90s. I doubt there are many recent jokes that dont draw from that period. Even jokes about Russians or anyone else are mostly from those days as places were less developed and the differences and stereotypes were more prominent.
Same as jokes between English and Irish or jokes about Germans, French, Jews etc are always old and based on elements of historical stereotypes or language that most people nowadays are unfamiliar with. Well, except French... the French are just weird.
I can sortof confirm it. (At least several) Estonian announcers do speak slow in Russian. Probably a language barrier.
There are plenty of new jokes about Russians tho. Especially created this year.

@@rolandlee6898 No one blames children or even adult local Russians. We blame Russia as a whole, as a nation. The problem is - many local Russians identify themselves as Russia. when we say something bad about Russia, they feel that we are insulting them directly.
Sure sometimes we point out the harsh history, but only when they start claiming, how they "liberated", and "saved" us. Or how cool it was under Russian rule.

I don't know why, but when Estonians speak English or Russian, it seems to me that they speak more slowly than other nationalities.

That must have been quite a while back. When I moved to LT and registered my car there, Regitra did a very extensive check - looking at tbe VIN, taking pictures, asking for a declaration iin place of a sales contract. I had owned the car for more than ten years, bought it while living in Italy, then took it to Germany. The Germans back then hardly bothered to look at the car. Lesson learned: if you want to get a stolen car registered, do it in Germany. (Just don’t steal the car in Italy, that is the one thing they do check - following a bunch of incidents.)

I see a lot of cars in Vilnius with obviously fake plates - most are (purportedly) Dutch, Belgian or German, but they are obviously fake. The Dutch and Belgian ones use the wrong font, and on the German ones the district on the seal does not match the number (one I recall had a number with BI for Bielefeld, and a seal from Stuttgart, which has S). A TV series from Germany called Achtung Kontrolle implies that this is often done to import cars from abroad under their own steam - the car has been legally purchased, but the plates are fake and the car is neither registered nor insured. I have seen cars with such plates on used car portals, advertised as “neeksploatuotas Lietuvoje”, i.e. never used in Lithuania. They could have been purchased legally and just driven to Lithuania without registration, or they could have been stolen - hard to tell for sure unless you run extensive background checks.

We in Finland never make fun of Estonians, at least I don't. Actually, I don't make fun of any country, but it is great to have some self irony. Now this is Nordic elitism! 🙂
Instead we enjoy the similarities and differences of two closely related languages, like Estonian "Nahkhiirmees", which means Batman. "Nahk" means skin, "hiir" means mouse and "nahkhiir" means bat. In Finnish "nahka" means leather (or skin), "hiiri" means mouse, but we don't have a word "nahkahiiri", but "lepakko" for a bat. Both "mees" and "mies" mean man. So, "Nahkahiirimies" in Finnish would mean Leather Mouse Man. What a Superhero!
Of course this works for both directions, many Finnish words sound funny to Estonian speakers.
As a Latvian, I call some of my fellow folks 'zirga galva' myself lol.
But we also have a phrase that we sometimes tend to throw around at Lithuanians, which is 'nabaga Leits' meaning (translated literally) -- 'poor Lithuanian'. This joke refers back to the 1930s when Latvian economy was substantially more developed than Lithuanian, and many Lithuanian citizens (Polish as well actually) resorted to going to Latvia to find a job that is better paid.
And in nowadays we use this phrase also when we just want to be sympathize with Lithuanians
as a mamber of Latvia i can say, You should know that BMW is most favourite car in Latvia. e46 is a national symbol of Latvia.

As a linguistic enthusiast I find Lithuanian language as a treasure of common European culture. So conservative and sophisticated. Lithuanian suffix 'as' is an equivalent of latin suffix -us, and antient greek -os.

My ex girlfreind was Lithuanian, and I used to live in Vilnius one winter, and I have been many times to Riga on work related trips. And I have Baltic ancestry my self so I love this knowing a lot about Lithuania and Latvia, I have never been to Estonia though, hopefully sometime though.....
I (Lithuanian) remember when I used to joke with my grandma that Latvians have 'žirgo galva' (horse head), but we never meant it in a harsh way. It was just like a tease in a way that you tease your brothers or sisters. I will always love my Latvian brothers and sisters!

It's not reverse card as "zirga galva" is because of making fun of Latvian language and its stressing which sounds fun for us. Like we say that "gyvatė" (snake) in Latvian is "džunglu šnūrs" (Latvianized "džiunglių šniūras/virvė" - "jungle's rope"). This is just an impression of Latvian language we have.

I've been to Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia last year and damn, all of these three are great countries. I've visited Vilnius, Panevėžys, Rīga and Tallinn (and also some smaller cities in Estonia while driving to Viru Raba). And well, from my observations people in Estonia were a bit slower, especially on the road. In Latvia people were driving like crazy and in Lithuania strangely roads (apart from Vilnius and Panevėžys) were pretty empty. In all of these I've met great people, only one was a bit unwelcoming (a young guy in some restaurant in Rīga), also one girl who was serving us food in Vilnius told me that I can't order more because it will be too much for me to eat (she could be right, but not gonna lie, I'd eat way more Lithuanian food). Also yeah, I'm a Pole. Please tell me jokes about Poles :D

There's a common belief in Zemgale (Latvia's region bordering Lithuania), that if You wake in the morning and see, that all of your agricultural hardware is gone, you've been visited by Lithuanian. Also ancient Latvians had in folklore an evil spirit named lietuvēns, that comes in the night to smolder humans and disturb horses.
20 minutes from the Lithuanian border and 30 minutes from the closest city but heard no jokes about Lithuanians, only about the slowness of Estonians.

There is one Latvian word every Estonian knows. That is saldējums (icecream). It sounds a bit funny to us :). I was visiting an old farmer near Latvian border in Estonia some years ago. When mosquitoes started flying around us in the evening local elderly people joked that look Latvians came. It was great fun to them.

I really enjoy your content. Honestly, it made me laugh quite a bit because I completely forgot about these stereotypes. Just want to say that it would be nice if your videos would include other baltic members more or even go beyond the baltic borders. Now why I am saying that. First of all, you're amazingly well-spoken, videos are well produced. We as Europeans, especially eastern(northern) Europeans don't really have a media outlet that would focus on Europe as a whole. But it is entertaining and also connects us, by laughing at our differences or similarities. I am a proud Lithuanian and clearly biased but also trying to open up more to the other cultures and appreciate them on the SAME level as mine and stop becoming egocentric about the one thing that the other might not share...side note, you're amazing and keep doing what you're doing!
