Over longer historical time Latvia and Estonia have been united under the same germanian type of cultural and political structure as Livonia with the center in Riga. Only the last century has divorced them here with germanian higher class kicked out or killed. As with Lithuania, they are totally different beast as they have much stronger cultural ties to Poland with their own military expansions, kingdoms, unions etc.

I had no idea that brits used this pejoratively! It’s pretty rich for them to point fingers about weather. Any time from now on it’s gray and dull I’ll call it the British gloom! 😅
Lithuania become more security country to live than UK, in UK i was lived 15 year's come back to Vilnius, great city, great people, great nature here, clean country. Safe to create family here.
I first went there in 2017 and wow was I stunned. Tallinn is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, the forests of Lahemaa were stunning and the friendliness of the people in all three countries were stunning. As a German I was surprised how many people spoke German out of nowhere when they realised we were German. The biggest difference between these countries in my opinion is how modern in terms of Western European style they are. While Estonia was like a modern Western European City Riga and especially Vilnius tended to be more eastern styled with their own Charme. Unfortunately we had some encounters with drunken people and some places seemed to be rather poor. But I think they have a really bright future and take their chances!
Baltics do have pretty warm summers, last summer it was reported at about 30 degrees outside (that being in Celsius). The mountain you mentioned at around 3 minutes in is called Big Egg-mountain (funny name I know) and is more so over considered a hill than a mountain
As a Latvian i can say that Latvians do indeed drink ALL THE TIME whenever they can, but from my experience us Latvians do it in moderation, so we arent like the russians who just end up behind a garbage can after each drinking session.
no to think about we have big gift from soviet times. I think you have over 20%... that can mess up hole statistic to begin with :) greetings from estonia.
Estonian here, everything was almost correct, but lacking as things like weather, relations and more. So Estonia’s closest friend is actually Finland dud to the language-, culture-, and other similarities. But obviously Estonia has very good relations with Latvia and Lithuania. So about the weather, in Estonia and Latvia is the wather in winter usually about -10C to -20C degrees and in summer around 18C to 24C degrees, in the other seasons its mostly trash. In Lithuania the weather might be a bit different (i have no clue). Also I wanted to mention, that the life expectancy (at least in Estonia) is growing due to more bans about smoking and alcohol. If needed correct me :)
I wanna add... that lot of estonian alcohol consumption in 2000s was because finnish people bought their alcohol from here. Now prices are basically similar and that type of thing is over i assume.
I live in Melbourne Australia and as a child our family were very friendly with a large family that had immigrated from Latvia. Great people but the father was a mess. Had terrible shell shock (PTSD) from WW2 when the Nazis invaded and put many in concentration camps. Very sad to see. I can only hope the war now in Ukraine/Russia can reach a diplomatic solution asap. War destroys ordinary peoples lives
One more thing not mentioned as a sad reality that most likely contributes to life expectancy is the high suicide rates per 100k which is an interesting dichotomy when considering the relatively high happiness index. Though personally if not for these statistics I would not know about these high rates since as far as I can extend the circle of people I know there is only one person that has committed suicide (and that was before I was even born). So it's probably more prevelant in some regions than others. As for alcoholism... I am always skeptical about this, because of 2 issues. One was there was one report about alcohol consumption, which likely accounted exported alcohol or alcohol consumer by tourists, because the given number divided by the population (even including newborns) would lead to daily consumption of large amounts. The second part is it feels that health organizations might classify a lot of non-alcoholics as such simply because they have a beer or two one or two times a week (e.g. a survey asking about alcohol consumption literally had regular consumption and in moderation as options, with moderation being once a month, which I feel like I am classified as an alcoholic by the questions answers though 1-2 liters of beer over the course of a week or two is quite normal)
Lithuanian here. At some point, we were so good at suicide, we were top3 in the world. We also have a rather twisted sense of humor, unlike the other two baltic states, which is often misunderstood by foreigners (proud moment) lastly, people mostly dislike small talk, are very direct in coversations and don't waste time providing useless information.
You make it sound like it’s dark and cold there, summers are a lot hotter than in UK and throughout the year there is way more sunny days than in the UK.
For brother Americans who know geography better than average Americans- Baltics are Balkans and vice versa;) This includes president Biden;) It is the most common mistake made by the Americans next to Serbia/Siberia/Syria; Slovenia/Slovakia; Switzerland/Sweden; Austria/Australia; Africa is a country; Eastern Europe is every former communist country…. And yea, most don’t know the difference between the country and cities ( for example when asked what countries you visited in Europe, they will say Paris, London, etc…)
Estonian here: the colours mean, respectively, the sky, the ground and the snow. Of course they also have more poetical and symbolical meaning like faith for freedom and education (blue), our dark past of being subjugated by many countries (black) and our want for education and spirituality (doesn't always mean Christianity, just spirituality), our white winters, light summer nights and the colour of birch bark (white). And it really portrays our country during the winter months, it really looks like that - if we get any snow thanks to the climate change...
Latvian here: The flag, or a similar one, was used 800 years ago, used when our ancestors fought with and against the crusaders invading them, a true mess. It became a symbol of peace-keeping. But all we really know is that it's a red flag with a white stripe. We don't know any details, let alone the historical meaning of the colors. It could be an Austrian flag, since the local ruler used to be a local ruler in Austria. Nobody knows for sure.
In addition Latvias true colors are Dark maroon-white-dark maroon , not red. Many people mistakenly quote we have an Austrian flag. The proportions of stripeas are 2-1-2 .
@@sirnigel100 Latvian here, I've got a legend for you: A military commander was bleeding, so the soldiers laid him down on a white sheet. Around the commander, the sheet became red, but where he was sleeping, it remained white.

With three languages, merging is too strange to be considered by us. Unity of laws does have benefits, but that's what European Union is for. Unity of currency is solved by the Eurozone. Friendly competition helps. If our neighbors can do X and Y, our politicians have some heat under their incompetent asses.
There is no necessity to artificially amalgamate these nations into one unit. We have have the EU & NATO as globalizing factors. That's quite sufficient. Best wishes ❤️ from Kaunas.
One can argue they where merged at times - all three under soviet rule and russian language. Lithuania is more Poland type of thing, but Latvia and Estonia (loosely defined, because the present Estonia has not been united as one not that long) have been long under german rule.
@@MrsUnderwriter Just a hypothetical scenario. A what if question if you will. That's what the creator of this channel likes to do every now and then, like what if the water levels rose by 100m?
A nice comparison of height is with the Netherlands. The Netherlands, the 'low countries' have a higher highest point than the Baltics. 319m over 318m, mind you, but still, the Netherlands of all places is still higher!
10:06 there is no union of just three countries, that's true, but there are plenty of unions apart from EU and NATO that include all three countries. For example, NB8 (Nordic-Baltic Eight), including three Baltic and five Norden states (Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Iceland). Not to mention hundreds of smaller organizations in which all three countries cooperate. I'd also liked you to mention that while all three countries are called Baltic, only two of them share Baltic language group (in fact, Latvian and Lithuanian are the only two surviving languages of this group), with Estonian being a Finnic language of Uralic group. There is also a dying Livonian language in Latvia, which is also Finnic. As for Baltic climate - it's a subject of jokes not only in English speaking countries and in Baltics themselves. In russian, there's a joke "Балтийский климат - утром трясёт, вечером качает", which can be translated as "The Baltic climate: shivers in the morning, sways in the evening", which, of course, has double meaning - the effect of the weather and of the alcohol.
Tallinn is the closest capital to both Helsinki and Stockholm. Estonia is a Finnic nation closest to Finland, while Latvia and Lithuania are actually Baltic nations. 'Baltic region' is a Soviet relic since it benefits mostly the Russian population that immigrated/colonized these countries from 1950s to 1990s . Most younger Estonians consider themselves Nordic not Baltic. The culture of these countries are pretty different from each other from Lutheran Estonia to Catholic Lithuania, with mix of both in Latvia. The assumption of being similar or close most probably comes from similar stance on Russia by politicians, but that is virtually only similarity. Traditions and customs are different, so is cuisine, especially Estonia's and Lithuania's. One-on-one relationships between regular people are not common especially between Estonians and the Balts, mostly because Estonian isn't even Indo-European language. Estonia's population is concentrated to it's northern part, like Finland's population is concentrated to it's Southern part. So both country's population is mirroring each other's. Similar mirroring doesn't occur with Latvia and Lithuania for some reason.
Bruh, Latvia and Estonia share essentially the same history for past 700 years. The only difference is Tallin's proximity yo Helsinki and Estonian language being very close to finnish. Do you really put Estonia as nordic only because of the language? If Estonia is Nordic, then Latvia is as well.
I don’t have a formal background in history, but I’ve traveled a lot in the Baltic states. Estonia has a lot of Swedish, Russian, and German historical influence, but Finnish historical influence is practically non-existent. This is probably because we’ve never conquered Estonia. We’ve always been brothers, and brothers share their cultures in their own way. Estonia has learned things from us over time. Both good and bad. Now, we’re studying what Estonia got right. I was taught as a child that Estonia is a Baltic country. As an adult, I’ve come to understand that Viro/Eesti is both a Baltic country and a Nordic one. I can’t say physically, but definitely in spirit! 💙
As a young Estonian myself- I would NEVER say that I am Nordic, rather its in this order: Estonian first, then Northern European or Eastern European, then Baltic, then Finno-Ugric and THEN I could say Nordic, but I rather would say Finnish then, because of my own background of being Ingrian. We Estonians have very little in common with Sweden or Denmark now, in the 90s they were the countries we look upon for strength, because the Sweden for example has a big Estonian population, but now in 2024, in day-to-day media you hear very little that we want to be like ’Scandinavian countries’ or like ’the Nordics’- it was very much the trend like 15 years ago, but now has very much died down. Like with Russia, Sweden and Denmark were our oppressors and occupiers, why should we want to look upon them or be like them? They themselves are very flawed countries now, with their own problems, maybe their tax system is something that Estonia should take from, but thats all. Historically and culturally the most similar country to ours is Latvia, not Finland. Two of us are very similar when it comes to our history and cultural traditions too. Lithuania is father away and isn't talked about that much, but Latvians are our brothers and sisters. If I wanted to move to Latvia not much would change for me- we have the same shops and supermarkets, I wouldn't have to change my bank or my phone number. I go to Latvia every few months and I feel very close to Latvians, because I am Southern Estonian, from Tartu. I have few family members who are Latvians too. I think Estonia has started to distance themselves from Finland as well. Yes, ethnically and linguistically similar, but our histories and paths are very different- Finland holds the values of the Scandinavia or the Nordics, because of their history with Sweden, Swedish is one of the languages of Finland even. Of course, Finns know the hate of Russians very well, they suffered too during the Russian Empire and Winter War, but as someone who speaks Finnish and has lived in Finland- they see us of lesser people, as cleaners, as builders, as hairdresser etc. They come to Tallinn for fun and cheap booze. The Ukraine conflict has put a somewhat stop to the ’Russia isn't that bad,’ a belief that they held for years and told us, the Baltics, not to fear. Something from an Estonian to others to think about and of course If you think all of this is wrong, you can hold that belief and can comment your own opinions!
During the pre 1939 era Finland was classified as a true Baltic state as well. It has likely ties to cultural inferiority "nobel" true scandinavian states like Sweden/Norway and these peasant Finns. One can argue that by still preserving their nation after the 40ties, they became Scandinavians with Balts lost to soviets. Estonians here are also somewhat distancing themselves from the rest of Balts, but it is mostly about lack of any present day cultural ties to the rest of the bunch and that is setting us apart and thus need to be more like our northern neighbour.
Estland is *European* and *Western* country. It is OK to say that there is different races and ethnicities living in Estland but focusing too much on one specific race or etnicity is too discriminative
Interesting. Maybe that’s why the Finns call one of their two best work class sail boats The Baltic. The other is the Swans. Definitely the world’s best.

Building on all that, in 1991, the Re-establishment of the Independent State of Lithuania took place.

Estonia should also be noted as a really high tech society with probbaly the most extensive and impressive E-Goverment system, high levels of computer literacy going back to pre 2000s as they included it in they middle or primary school curriculum (dont recall exactly. Leading to high level of entreponeurship and companies like skype
As an estonian that grew up in the 90s and 2000s, you're right, we had the Tiger Jump (Tiigrihüpe) program that started in 1996 and introduced computer classes, internet connection and computer lessons into every primary and high school. We learned everything from office programs to Windows and Linux and even some light programming. It was pretty fun.The program also rapidly spread the internet into every corner of the country with then modern systems. We practically skipped the whole dial-up internet phase.

Even though we had close ties with Poland we still appreciate Latvia and Estonia a thousand times more!
😂😂😂 Germans were not killed ir kicked out. They returned to Germany after Molotov-Ribentrop pat was signed and they got warning from nice guy Hitler that this territory has been signed off to USSR.

@MrsUnderwriter you talk about time 20 years later than me.
Greetings from Lithuania, i hope my felow sisters Latvia and Estonia will be with Lithuania for as long as possible and we promise to stay there for you both our sisters, i stand for the truth and for the power of Baltics, i want us to have a peaceful life, over, Lithuania out.
Lovely work
Baltics is not an ethnic group, Balts, who include Latvians and Lithuanians, is.
Nice video. In the future, please include languages, major religions, and major industries.
And also conflicts and guns!
I had no idea that brits used this pejoratively! It’s pretty rich for them to point fingers about weather. Any time from now on it’s gray and dull I’ll call it the British gloom! 😅
People in many other countries already do refer to dull weather as, "very British weather".
Apparently, baltic people speak english pretty well.
Thank you for making this video

Latvian here. Didn't know we are used as a slang 🤣
Fun fact, estonia's cold moist winters can be compared to siberian coldness
I live in Melbourne Australia and as a child our family were very friendly with a large family that had immigrated from Latvia. Great people but the father was a mess. Had terrible shell shock (PTSD) from WW2 when the Nazis invaded and put many in concentration camps. Very sad to see. I can only hope the war now in Ukraine/Russia can reach a diplomatic solution asap. War destroys ordinary peoples lives
@@debbieanne7962 Agree. The Russians should just go home.

The Duchy of Courland, Curonia is one of the lesser known colonial piwers...the island of Tobago and the mouth of the Gambia
Don't forget about us Estonians going from a hot sauna to swim in the ice cold water in the middle of the winter
Same as to talk about uk, Ireland and France together
Latvia also ranks highest on domestic violence and consumption of alcohol.
Oh, and we also have the widest waterfall of Europe in Kuldīga :)
We also have a rather twisted sense of humor, unlike the other two baltic states, which is often misunderstood by foreigners (proud moment)
lastly, people mostly dislike small talk, are very direct in coversations and don't waste time providing useless information.

@@ragnarlaine4065Sorry brother, you make no sense?
It would be good to know what the colors of the flags signify.
Lithuania 🟡-☀ 🟢-🌳 🔴-🩸 LT

Estonians in the comments trying so hard to say they are more simmilar to finland and that they are nordic not baltic. In my experiance we should not call estonia nordic but finland baltic :D. I don't know much about lithuania but Latvians are super simmilar to finns. Some could argue that finns are more simmilar to estonia and latvia rather than scandinavians.
well, Finland was considered a Baltic state during the interwar.
Finland and baltic states have the same dominant genotype
As estonian I admit that estonians and latvians are basically the same by dna and culture, just language is different.

Estonia is just a spare part of nordic realm
3:19 that pronounciation was crazy😭😭😭, 6:39 also literally only the old town has cobblestone streets
There are quite a few cobblestone streets in Riga actually, and not just in the old town.
Population is 6.1M not 5.8M.
Latvia is the most western oriented and also best for west tourists with its cosmopolitism
If the region merged, what would it be called and what would its capital be? The capital could be Riga as it is in the middle of the 3.
@@IsabelJones69 the region will never merge. Why?
One can argue they where merged at times - all three under soviet rule and russian language. Lithuania is more Poland type of thing, but Latvia and Estonia (loosely defined, because the present Estonia has not been united as one not that long) have been long under german rule.

4:25 min. Is said that Lithuania has around 30 islands! Where does this insanity come from?

The life expectancies aren’t that low considering all things.
@funkee004 this guy what ? I stated a fact
Lithuania has 30 islands? Maybe in some lakes. No islands in the sea though.
