i have no idea what this clip must look like to someone who hasn't followed Andy Sipowicz's journey throughout the series..... but to someone who has, it's the greatest payoff in TV history. This is 12 years of unbelievably great script-writing matched with a 12 year powerhouse of a performance, EVERY WEEK. One of the greatest characters to ever grace the screen, big or small. If you are not looking for a way to binge this now, you are doing yourself a disservice.
The greatest payoff would have been seeing him lead off to prison in chains. Andy was a violent, racist, vile, sarcastic, condescending, self righteous, petty, rage filled lunatic who was a poor excuse for either a cop, or a human being. He was constantly abrasive, and even abusive to just about everyone around him, but his fellow officers treated him like a hero because he was , occasionally, not a complete and utter @sshole.
He was written in to be a hardass and a bit of a jerk.....but, especially once David Caruso left, the audience made it very clear that they LIKED Andy.....and his role took off; he was made better, more compassionate, more sympathetic, and was shown to have flaws, but still had ETHICS. He became THE hero of the show....and the audience never tired of him. He became the face of NYPD Blue. Great actor in a great series.
Loved him on Hill St blues so I always saw him as the star. Dennis Franz is amazing. David Caruso was ok. Funny how he too was on HSB he played the leader of the Shamrocks gang.
I met him once, and his then wife. He was a complete gentleman, very down to earth and interesting. I was early 20's and loved the show and was star-struck to meet him. He sat and talked with me and my family, got a photograph too. He is actually quite tall and blocky. I had the impression from the show he was short but he's not. A real legend.
The character and the actor deserved such an honor. Franz held this show together season after season--and the original plan was to have the character killed off in Season One. What a great actor Dennis Franz is!
I still say, the best irony is that David Caruso got so full of his own hype that he left the greatest written/acted cop show ever made to make a few terrible movies before returning to TV on one of the worst poorly written/acted cop shows. Dennis Franz is an underappreciated master actor.
For those who know, and those who don't, this kind of scene is a real occurrence when sobriety is the focus of our lives. The redemption, and restoration is off the charts!
I absolutely love when Andy glances up at John (who played it real close to the vest to heighten the surprise) & John is smiling down at him. I will never get over the sheer power & beauty of this scene. Never. What a beautiful aching triumph for dear Andy. ♥️
I think he’s relatable and we can see so much of ourselves in his character he’s not Uber handsome or perfectly marbled in physique, he’s just an ordinary looking guy who’s fallible like the rest of us, just my 2 cents.
The toughest part of seeing this is knowing that it’s the last time we will see the 15th precinct. I love this show. Steven Bochco knew how to tell a story!
This was my wifes favorite show back in the day. We met in '92. She started watching this show as soon as it started airing. Been married 25 years this September. We've been separated since around the first of August this year. Things are very complicated. Troubled kids, job stress, tons of friction. We still talk and see each other occasionally. Neither of us is seeing anyone else. I don't know why I was recommended this video. More Importantly why I watched it. Bringing back so many good memories. Breaking my heart. Be well people. And if you love someone, don't take it for granted and let life ruin or get in the way of what you have.

Thank you Direct TV for showing NYPD Blue from start to finish.....all in sequential order. 5 days a week for the past year or so. It was the best cop show ever.
I'm watching this with tears streaming down my cheeks. Having been in middle school when the show was on television, obviously my parents weren't about to let me stay up late to watch it. I had the pleasure of binge-watching the entire series on Amazon Prime a few years back. To watch the character of Andy Sipowicz evolve throughout the series is both heart-breaking and awe-inspiring. The man had gone through the deaths of his son, wife, and two partners, cancer and alcoholism, and still managed to grapple all of it and come out on the other side a better version of himself. That is personal evolution, true to form.
NYPD Blue is the best cop drama that ever aired on national tv.God bless Denis Franz you have played your part so well , you are my favorite actor in the history of nypd blue. You have finally made it to sergeant in all the years you played.thanks for making the show..

Yeah, I loved Law and Order (who didn't love Lenny Briscoe?) but that wasn't a total cop show. Really only the first half hour was the police, the 2nd half hour was the prosecution of the crime. But a great show non the less.

Of all the episodes and series, this is my personal favourite. It's says everything about the man with no dialogue required ! Never better than this ... just magnificent 👌
This show was able to chronicle the redemption of a man who lives with struggles with which so many of us can identify. It was able to develop many different characters as they came into the series and then leave. It made you appreciate each character in the squad on different merits. And was able to wrap up the stories to end the series with closure, satisfaction, and hope. What more can be asked for? I have such envy for all those involved
I may have watched this scene over 100 times, and each time it brings a tear to my eye. I, along with so many others have watched this, the finest of television series ever, development of probably the best television character ever. His constant falls from grace, and then subsequent redemption makes you love the character even more. Watching him walk down the stairs to be honoured by his colleagues and friends, without saying a word, is probably the single most outstanding piece of acting on the small screen. I miss the show, and wish I could find a way to watch season 5 onwards. I have the first four seasons on DVD but can’t get my hands on the rest, from Australia. NYPD Blue, the best!
So here it is 25 years later, I'm divorced probably never getting married again, kids are grown out if the house, about to be a grandfather, semi retired & I cry like a little girl watching this. What happened? It seems like yesterday all I wanted to be was older. Thanks for posting this.
To David L. Yep! I understand completely. I'm 74 now, and life certainly is not what I thought it would be. More disappointing than positive. As a young person in the 60's,I can't believe the hate and vitriol rampant today. I'm not wanting to live with it much longer!! (Continued)

Dennis Franz is one of the best actors of all-time. His acting in NYPD Blue as Andy Sipowicz was transformative, complex and awe-inspiring. Amazing last episode that honored his character's evolution. We miss you, Dennis! A big thank you to everyone who was a part of this show! My favorite forever. Thankful that all of the episodes have finally been released on DVD! :-)
When people talk about James Gandolfini and Brian Cranston, as breaking new ground for modern TV dramas, they should also remember Franz - so much evolution and depth to his character
To this day there still hasn’t been a show that could hold a candle to the writers and actors portrayed in this series. There was never a character I didn’t like, there wasn’t a show that bored me, and I must’ve seen the reruns from start to finish at least five or eight times! And of course my favorite character, Sipowicz. This scene always brings tears to my eyes.❤
Very moving scene! When Andy looks in the mirror to check out the stripes, I imagined I heard a pigeon cooing. John played his cards close by not letting Andy know what awaited him downstairs. Few characters have traveled as rocky a road as Andy Sipowicz but this straight path through his colleagues was beautifully realized. Brilliant show!
Best cop show ever! From Andy to John, every single person gave it their all and it showed! My dad was a detective when he retired in 1993 and he never missed an episode. I miss these guys
Thank God for Steven Bochco. I used to watched Hill Street Blues with my parents when I was just a kid and the only thing I could remember by the time I watched it again about 20 years was that amazing theme song and some vague sense of duty that excedes a single being's individuality and a deep feeling of sorrow. Later, I was 22 or 23 when I started to follow NYPD Blue and despite the fact I had to watch it dubbed to Spanish I could immerse again in those apparently long gone feelings.and relived again through the amazing acting of Dennis Franz, Kim Delaney, Gordon Clapp, James McDaniel, Jimmy Smits and the rest of the cast. The TV God bless you all, guys.
I recently found this show on H&N from 3-5 am. I'm retired, stayed awake for it each mng. Not there any longer. Recorded on VCR while in prime time. Miss it. A best show ever.
Sipowicz was always my favorite character. I already felt like i knew him since I always considered him to be a continuation of Lt. Buntz on Hill Street Blues.
No matter the amount of work in movies and television, the role of Andy Sipowicz was Dennis Franz’s Magnum opus. Nobody else could fill that role. Nobody.
The 3 scenes that affected me most of all TV 3. Bobby Simone visits Andy in the locker room as a ghost 2. Bobby Simone dies 1. Andy walking down the stairs in this scene. I cry every time. It was not hard to learn to love Andy Sipowicz. A testament to the great skills of Dennis Franz. I love Dennis Franz
Reminds me of a time while I was in the USAF, during an ORI. I'd been promoted and was NCOIC of the network shop. But, our maintenance shop was short staffed and needed help running wire and cross connecting pairs for various telephone systems. I installed our deployable LAN in short order and then assisted with the phone work. At the end of the last day of our setup, I was greeted with a standing ovation when I entered the shop. In my 23 yrs. of service, THAT was was my proudest moment.
I can easily binge on these for HOURS. Can't believe it's been so long. So many valuable scenes. So many of these segments go right for the emotional jugular. This one surely does. Earned Respect and Recognition.
I'm a grown man and I almost cried watching this scene after all the years of heartache and crap Andy dealt with, and overcoming being a drunk and a bigot in the early years. Personally I would have loved for there to have been a whole season for Andy to have a more happy life and just run things but that wouldn't have been as interesting to most folks and wouldn't have garnered the ratings the network would want.
I’ve seen this a dozen times, including when it first aired. I get emotional, every time. Thanks Dennis, for the best dramatic character ever on network TV.
He actually didn’t retire after the show. He said he was going to take a year or so break but then then the break kept getting longer until he realized he enjoyed not working
Watched all the series in the UK. Groundbreaking with the camera work and a brilliant cast throughout the seasons. Andy sipowitz went through every emotion and took us with him!!! Brilliantly played by Dennis Franz this episode epitomised the emotion and class of the series. Absolutely fantastic.
When I put on my uniform everytime I was proud of it being neat, creased, and my badge and medals polished and most people respected my uniform and badge. Sad that those days seem like they are in the past. Loved this series, it was realistic.
Wierd how SVU's Oliva Benson went from a Det 2nd Grade to NYPD Captain 🚔. Law & Order was on TV 📺 for many seasons. As was Hawaii 5-O both CBS versions. CBS/NCIS.
Having been in this line of work (police, military) one thats been there and done that unconsciously stiffens at ATTENNNNNNN HUH!. I followed this show start to finish and Dennis Franz emulated many cops I know and worked with and sometimes emulated me as well. Franz is a great actor and will forever be known as Andy Sipowitz. While only an actor, you did us proud Brother and thank you. Former(Retired) Chicago Police Sgt
@Gerard Cummins thank you for your service..... You Brits have balls of steel doing the job unarmed though I guess your last posting you were armed.... Seth C. KIMMEL NYPD MOS shield#24981
I have never been more thrilled for a fictional character than I was watching this when it aired. You earned it Andy. We're proud of you, and we love you.
I still come back to replay this scene if I want to instantly feel happy, and sad, and happy again. Such a powerful scene and so well paced and beautifully acted...
The series could have ended right here and it would’ve been just as emotionally charged. A testament to incredible character development on the part of Franz and the producers of this masterpiece
The Andy Sipowitz character was one of the best acted on television from start to finish over a 12 year period. A tour de force for actor Dennis Franz. He really did that character justice because in the pilot show Andy was shown to be a good and honest cop but a very flawed piece of sh*t as a person. However, Franz carefully didn’t let his portrayal of Andy’s flaws go too far. In the hands of the wrong actor, that character’s arc easily could have come to an unceremonious end in the first season. Also, after star David Caruso abruptly decided to leave the show after a season to pursue movie stardom (LOL) and succeeding star Jimmy Smits wraped up a highly regarded 4 years when he was suddenly called upon to replace Caruso allowing Denis’s flawed Andy character proper and reasonable time to grow and redeem, Dennis Franz had become the clear star, heart and soul of NYPD Blue. His Andy Sipowitz character was significantly becoming a better person, cop, husband, father and leader.
If this was the final episode, what an enigmatic ending, Andy finally making Sergeant, & receiving a salute from his colleague's, including a Deputy Chief? And the final walk into TV history. Wonderful how you Americans treat each other as family in organisations like the NYPD. Just wonderful.
Wow! That took me back to my last day. Standing at my locker realizing all the “lasts” you were having and wondering, after 20+ years of getting the job done, what would the world have in store for me now. Here’s to all the men and women that step up and take our places and continue to get the job done. Be safe!
I have just come across this scene after missing too many years of Andy Sipowitz. And I have now just hunted out my full box set of NYPD Blue and *that* is my vieweing for the next few days/weeks. (I will return to "Lonesome Dove" in that Autumn/Fall !) Thank you for posting and reminding me of Andy S. A great character portrayed by a *GREAT* actor.
That’s the perfect title for the NYPD Blue clip you shared, it says it all, although if I shared it I might just have a title that says Most Memorable or unforgettable clip ever! With a description that would say the NYPD Blue tv clip that will go down in history forever because of Andy’s awesome Saluting good bye and happy retirement.
By far the best cop show ever!! I used to watch Hill Street Blues when I was a kid with my dad but never really "got it". NYPD Blue I got and watched from start to finish. My dad was a cop with some of Andy's traits, not the bigot, or drunk sides, but getting scumbags off the streets kind of side. Really bummed the show is gone, but thankful I got to experience it while it was here. Thanks for the video clip, I could watch this scene over and over.
+Cyndee Miller Eat shit fucktard! Read my first post again dipshit, I LIKE THE SHOW!! There, it's in all caps so even a dumbass like yourself can undersand. Now piss off!
The character of Andy Sipowicz reminds me of my late godfather. Physically and emotionally they were kindred spirits. My godfather died the year before NYPD Blue premiered. He would have loved it.
Loved this show. Better than all the others... The blend of characters - and the intensity of Sipowicz.... made it believable and superior to all others.
Wow, what a truly moving scene. If you watched the show through the years the Sipowicz character had so many ups and downs. This scene brought tears to my eyes as well. A perfect rite of passage for this complicated man. Bochco and Franz hit a home run.
This really is the best scene! They showed this episode again last night!15 years after the show went off the air,NYPD Blue is still the best Police drama series I have ever seen! Thanks to producers like Steven Bochco(God rest his soul) and once in a lifetime actors like Dennis Franz who retired after this magnificent portrayal of Andy Sipowicz and went out at the very Top!Cheers!
What can I say except I had tears in my eyes watching this! Brilliant! Andy Sipowicz finally makes the grade and gets congratulated by all those who have loved him or hated him over the past 12 years. Why these later series have never been released on DVD is shocking! Thanks for the upload!
This scene is so well done that even someone who had never seen a single episode of this series would be able to understand. The story is conveyed not by script, but by great filming and extraordinary acting.
This show is a snapshot in a period of my own life when I look back. Life goes by so damn fast, and when I see these NYPD Blue clips it makes me feel both sad and happy.
Dennis Franz is one of the best actors of all-time. His acting in NYPD Blue as Andy Sipowicz was transformative, complex and awe-inspiring. Amazing last episode that honored his character's evolution. Miss you, Dennis!
Best intro music and video montage ever: the slow-sad beginning to the fantastic drum work, the fireworks, the rising up of the Chinese Dragon and final shot of train with drums working hard-cut to titles. Mike Post did that. As well as great music throughout the series.
the only thing I wish they'd have done was to bring Lt. fancy back for one more scene after Andy took control of the squad or had him in the line here to offer his congratulations. I always felt that the dynamic that the two of them had was as intense as any two characters on television. the acting between the two of them was sublime at times.
I will say it again! This is a TRUE BLUE story. I will never see this scene enough. GOD BLESS THE MAN THAT INVENTED THIS JOB GOD PROTECT OUR BROTHERS & SISTERS IN BLUE 💙💙💙💙 POLICE LIVES MATTER 35YRS & STILL GOING MYSELF 💙🙏
there were and are better shows out there, i have to admit that even when i am i big Fan of NYPD Blue. But i watched a lot of Shows in my life. From Breaking Bad (Best Series ever aired) to The Wire, The West Wing, Boss, Southland, Sopranos or Game of Thrones or or or..... it doesnt matter. This 2 minutes and 27 seconds- Scene is the best in Television History. I can watch it over and over again, i will always have a tear in my eye. Cause it reflects the whole 12 years where Andy had to suffer a lot, without even saying word exept the few he said to John. Best Scene ever
***** no it isnt in my opinion. Bryan Cranston, best acting in a tv series ever. The Screenbook...dont have to speak about it. Stunning! The Journey you take with the characters is a wild ride. And the pictures, the camera work is the best ever with a small budget
An amazing Cast and Show. Andy was absolutely the best. You can rewind a bit further back on time and see him in another wonderful Classic show. Hill Street Blues.
*Amazing the show has been off 12 years now ... as long as the 12 years it was on.*

Dennis Franz and Jimmy Smits were the best acting duos ever on any tv show. Miss them, miss the series.
I was a fan since day 1 in 1993. I cried during this scene.
Best cop show ever! From Andy to John, every single person gave it their all and it showed! My dad was a detective when he retired in 1993 and he never missed an episode. I miss these guys
2018 and I still watch nypd blue reruns. It's truly a great show because it's so character driven. Every cast member was phenomenal fr
Hell! I'm Watching In 2021
NYPD BLUE one of the best shows ever Det. Sipowiz charater was one of a kind and Dennis Franz was perfect for the role.
Just when you think no one appreciates the hard work you have put in. This happens.
That happens to me everytime I go downstairs.
An extremely hard-won promotion for Sergeant Sipowicz. He had gone through so much. A superb end to a superb series.
In one's lifetime we may possibly see a little bit of Andy Sipowicz in each and every one of us.
That may happen in the future; he was a prolific sperm donor.
I recently found this show on H&N from 3-5 am. I'm retired, stayed awake for it each mng. Not there any longer. Recorded on VCR while in prime time. Miss it. A best show ever.
Enjoy your retirement Elizabeth, were you in the job?
Sipowicz was always my favorite character. I already felt like i knew him since I always considered him to be a continuation of Lt. Buntz on Hill Street Blues.
DISCO-INFERNO-70 but not Beverly Hills Buntz, that shit never happened.
I liked Buntz on Hill Street.
@@Vnachi8 lmfao
I remember seeing this at 18 years old and cried then. It feels even stronger now at 36 years old 😭
No matter the amount of work in movies and television, the role of Andy Sipowicz was Dennis Franz’s Magnum opus. Nobody else could fill that role. Nobody.
The 3 scenes that affected me most of all TV
3. Bobby Simone visits Andy in the locker room as a ghost
2. Bobby Simone dies
Great story! Thanks for sharing!
I'm crying now, music gets me every time.
Me too!
I’ve seen this a dozen times, including when it first aired. I get emotional, every time. Thanks Dennis, for the best dramatic character ever on network TV.
Interesting that Dennis Franz retired after the series. Went out on top and hung around with the family. Smart dude.
He actually didn’t retire after the show. He said he was going to take a year or so break but then then the break kept getting longer until he realized he enjoyed not working
I've been rewatching NYPD Blue on HULU the last month or so and its so refreshing.
Every show has a character that just can’t be replaced.
Dennis made his character that one. Nuff said 😎
I remember my grandma use to watch this show when I was a kid. Now I started watching this show. I really enjoy it.
And today we are dealing with self-righteous fools who want to abolish the police
Wierd how SVU's Oliva Benson went from a Det 2nd Grade to NYPD Captain 🚔. Law & Order was on TV 📺 for many seasons. As was Hawaii 5-O both CBS versions. CBS/NCIS.
There are those of us that respect good cops and are glad for them. May all your shifts be slow and uneventful. Stay safe and Be Blessed.

@Gerard Cummins thank you for your service..... You Brits have balls of steel doing the job unarmed though I guess your last posting you were armed....

I have never been more thrilled for a fictional character than I was watching this when it aired.
You earned it Andy. We're proud of you, and we love you.
I just binge-watched Season 12 today and literally sobbed at this scene.
Incredible. He was the best on Hill Street and this series as well. Two of the greatest shows ever aired.
If this was the final episode, what an enigmatic ending, Andy finally making Sergeant, & receiving a salute from his colleague's, including a Deputy Chief? And the final walk into TV history.
Wonderful how you Americans treat each other as family in organisations like the NYPD. Just wonderful.
One of the best TV shows ever. The acting by Dennis Franz is really good.
Wow! That took me back to my last day. Standing at my locker realizing all the “lasts” you were having and wondering, after 20+ years of getting the job done, what would the world have in store for me now. Here’s to all the men and women that step up and take our places and continue to get the job done. Be safe!
Right there with you brother.
I have just come across this scene after missing too many years of Andy Sipowitz.
And I have now just hunted out my full box set of NYPD Blue and *that* is my vieweing for the next few days/weeks.
(I will return to "Lonesome Dove" in that Autumn/Fall !)
Thank you for posting and reminding me of Andy S. A great character portrayed by a *GREAT* actor.
2019 now. and i am re watching this series again. It is even better the second time around and will always be timely.
breathtaking. David Franz is such a great and humble actor. well written in NYPD Blue.
dennis franz not david.
right. thanks for the hint
I've been watching it again and appreciate it so much more! Superb acting by all!!!
*****
Well a drunk is a drunk, a bigot is a bigot, and a scumbag is a combo of both.
nextdrink45 On regular TV, no doubt. Loved it!! But on HBO, The Wire. If you've never watched it, please do. Even better
+Cyndee Miller Eat shit fucktard! Read my first post again dipshit, I LIKE THE SHOW!! There, it's in all caps so even a dumbass like yourself can undersand. Now piss off!
And a prick is a prick. You never out grow it.
Yeah, this was my favorite scene too. I cried thru it. He almost reminds me of my dad.
Everytime I watch this scene my tears are runing, I know its only a movie but this scene is honoring every promoting officer on earth.
They broke the mold with this one....
It's amazing how fast time goes by . A great show. A Great actor. Looking in from Ireland 🇮🇪
The character of Andy Sipowicz reminds me of my late godfather. Physically and emotionally they were kindred spirits. My godfather died the year before NYPD Blue premiered. He would have loved it.
By far the best scene from the best cop drama ever to grace our tv screens........Thanks for posting.
You were spot on. Love NYPD Blue and Andy Sipowicz. Best TV show ever
I wish it would be brought back to television. What a great scene.
NYPD BLUE, Glad I get to watch episodes now. One of the best series, evah!!
The music alone deserves an Emmy!
Best intro music and video montage ever: the slow-sad beginning to the fantastic drum work, the fireworks, the rising up of the Chinese Dragon and final shot of train with drums working hard-cut to titles. Mike Post did that. As well as great music throughout the series.
One of the best shows in TV history with one of the greatest characters ever. Terrific scene.
Hope one day they make a current version of this show. Very well done. Miss it.
the only thing I wish they'd have done was to bring Lt. fancy back for one more scene after Andy took control of the squad or had him in the line here to offer his congratulations. I always felt that the dynamic that the two of them had was as intense as any two characters on television. the acting between the two of them was sublime at times.
What an unreal tv show. One of few good memories I had with my mom. We used to watch this show religiously.
There has never been a show that has every part of the puzzle so great in all its ways.I think it was for sure the best cop show of all time.
The only television show that I set my watch to, and I am over 65 years old. Loved this show.
I'm just thrilled to be re-watching my favorite show on AUDIENCE channel on Directv!!!
I will say it again! This is a TRUE BLUE story. I will never see this scene enough.
GOD BLESS THE MAN THAT INVENTED THIS JOB
GOD PROTECT OUR BROTHERS & SISTERS IN BLUE 💙💙💙💙

35YRS & STILL GOING MYSELF 💙🙏
thanks a lot for making me cry like a baby. didn't remember that scene
IT WASNT THE BEST COP SHOW IT WAS THE BEST SHOW I NOW HAVE 103 EPISODES RECORDED ILL NEVER EVER STOP WATCHING IT
I was so proud and so happy to see this ! More than I'd be promoted ! 😥
Love the little pat on the back from Jones. Andy came a long way.
there were and are better shows out there, i have to admit that even when i am i big Fan of NYPD Blue.
Yeah I'd agree.
The best character development ever.
Great show. Andy's growth through the series was awesome. I'll add that one of the best days of my life was when I put on Sergeant's stipes as a LEO.
