- LEARN HOW MAKE AN EASY FALAFEL RECIPE + TAHINI SAUCE AT HOME!
LAY HO MA! Crispy, tasty, and easy to make - this is a crowd pleaser for sure! Join me in this episode and learn how to make a batch of easy and gluten free falafel with a simple tahini sauce.
FALAFEL INGREDIENTS:
1 cup dried chickpeas
1/2 onion
3 pieces garlic
10g parsley
10g cilantro
1/2 tsp cumin
1/2 tsp baking soda
2 tbsp coconut flour
1 tbsp lemon juice
1 tbsp potato starch
1 tsp salt
pepper to taste
1 1/2 cups avocado oil
DIPPING SAUCE INGREDIENTS:
1 piece garlic
3/4 cups tahini
5 tbsp lemon juice
parsley to garnish
Directions:
1. Prep the dried chickpeas overnight by placing one cup of them into a bowl. Cover with about 2.5 litres of water
2. Roughly chop the onion. Loose chop the parsley and cilantro
3. Strain out the chickpeas and add to the food processor. Add the garlic, onions, parsley, cilantro, cumin, baking soda, coconut flour, lemon juice, potato starch, salt, and pepper
4. Blend for about 45 seconds
5. Use an ice cream scoop to scoop out the mixture and shape them into balls (or whatever shape you desire). Repeat this step until you run out of mixture
6. Add the avocado oil to a frying pan. Heat up the oil on medium heat for a few minutes
7. Carefully fry the falafel for 2-3min on each side (fry in two batches). Place the cooked falafel onto a plate lined with paper towel to rest
8. Make the dipping sauce by grating the garlic into a small bowl. Add the tahini and lemon juice. Whisk until smooth and combined. Garnish with some chopped parsley

Hi Will - can it be baked rather than deep fried? My girlfriend can't eat all that oil?
Can I bake or cook without oil?
When you freeze it do you defrost it then fry or fry it straight from the freezer? If you fry it from the freezer... You fry for around ?(On each side.)Ideal oil temperature? I love your channel. Please continue.😁
If I had an ice cream scoop like yours, I could make falafel with even more confidence! 😬
Dude I get so excited when you tell me I can cook something with absolute confidence. You say that, and I'm like, hell yea, he's right, I'm gonna cook that with absolute confidence, I feel good about this.

Yes! You can do it! You feel great!
I know right. He makes it so easy to follow the recipe, nothing intimidating, simple procedures.
🤣👍🏻
That's how I amp myself up to feel before building IKEA furniture. But it never goes well...
In the Middle East we always recommend changing the soaking water. And we do add a bit of apple cider vinegar to the water. We do not use any type of flour in the original recipe. But instead we use half chickpeas and half peeled Fava beans.
🙌🏻🥳
"half peeled Fava beans"(?) now that's different.
How do you peel fava beans? Do you cook them first? What about chickpeas, just soaked or cooked?
Now I know what to do with those fava beans!
@Adam A. thanks! I have no trouble with beans, but a lot of folk do: I'll send them this!
I’m recovering from surgery and find that watching your videos relieves me from the pain I am in. Your content is so beautiful and relaxing that I make it a point not to skip anything to appreciate your artistic process. I will definitely be making your foods with confidence once I am better :)

This looks amazing, Wil 🤩 falafel + tahini is one of my favorite dishes. Your pun also made me lol.

Instead of deep frying, spray a waffle iron and waffle it!
I love the easy dipping sauce!
Wow! Great idea! Thanks!
I love this idea!

Only the taste isn't the same without the deep-frying oily aroma.
Tried it, went back to enjoying properly deep-dried Falafel, as should. :-)
With dried raw beans, the deep frying is necessary to thoroughly cook them through. If using a different cooking method, I would use cooked beans and just call it a falafel-flavored bean burger batter. It would still be tasty, and you wouldn't have any unpleasant raw chickpea textures or flavors.
For those of us cutting or eliminating oil, anything can be baked with parchment paper to help brown things without oil.
Thanks Wil for this super easy recipe. Once again your recipe rocks!
Aloha 🌺

Was wondering about that! Have you tried an airfryer?
@@AudreyGranWeinberg Was wondering the same thing?
Thank you for that. His recipes look so delicious, yet every one I e watched has so much frying...way more oil than I'm allowed.

I love to eat Falafel with fresh salad😋
Looks divine! Absolutely excited about it, indeed! Love the simplicity of your instructions. Thanks!
Tried this tonight; it was much more simple than the recipe that I had before but tasted just as great.
I have a very, very small recommendation: add a little sumac to the tahini sauce if you have it. It gives the sauce a wonderful bit of flavor to the tahini and balances the lemon juice in it.
🥳🙌🏻

Your recipes look amazing and I can't wait to start trying them. The simplicity of them from start to finish is also a huge bonus. Thanks for sharing!!
I was just about to ask if you could re-use the oil - because it seemed wasteful to throw it out after only frying some falafel in it - and then you answered yes! I love it when this happens. You also answered the question in my mind about coconut flour at the beginning.
Well, I must say, Wil, I don't think I've ever seen more beautiful falafel, and the presentation is perfect, all lovely clean lines and great colours for the crockery. I think you have finally reached the peak of perfection and you will have a hard time beating this video for gorgeous visuals!

Best not to reuse burned frying oil. It contains lots of toxins.
And a real Falafel does not contain any flour; he made a big error there.

Dipping them in sesame before frying takes the falafel to another dimension

In Iraq, the falafel stand's chef would add something called Amba (pickled mango - slightly spicy) and it takes the sandwich into a whole new level !!
🤤
Ohhh picked mango sounds very delish!!!
@@kassiapencek6185 I used to hate it as a kid because it was too spicy for me. As I got older and got into exploring more old traditional recipes from around the world, I decided to add it to my sandwich, and was surprised by the flavor.
Would that be mango amchar, or mango chutney?
@@curtisthomas2670 more like chutney

Your videos are so impressive, nice easy music, very few words, simple visual instructions. They are exquisite. I have passed them on to others, who are also impressed. Love how healthy you cook too.
Yum! I normally make the tahini dressing with water too. It balances everything really well and helps adjusting the consistency of the dressing, depending on what you are going for. I feel like too much lemon juice makes it too tart and too much tahini will make it bitter. And salt, dont forget the salt.
Great video 🧡
👨🏻🍳🙌🏻
Yummy. I love anything with tahini sauce. Great tip on the avocado oil. I always save my sun dried tomato oil because it is so flavorful. Thanks Wil!
I do the same with sundried tomato oil! I also add some dried chili flakes to it. 👌
Yummy 😋 thank you!!
Oh wow , my mouth is watering ! I can't wait to try this ,
Thanks for your calming , informative videos & nice B- roll 🥰🌈
I'd try adding twice as much parsley and some brown mustard seed to the mixture and some cayenne to the sauce. Looks good hope it's not too dry I like a nice moist falafel on the inside!
You always remind me that it's time to sharpen my knives.🙈 Your cutting skills are admirable! 👌

I just made the falafel! And omg soooo good! I actually put them in the air fryer and they turned out so good ! Thank you for this recipe ☺️☺️

8:00 That crunch...I am craving these so much right now! And my tasty lunch no longer seems as delicious :D
I just looove falafels so so much and have not had any in way too long.
Oh my! another one of my favs... Now I can step it up a notch...Thanks Wil
Thank You for this recipe!
I just made this and I think it's really important not to use too much onion and parsley because otherwise there's too much moisture in the falafel and they cook longer and get black outside. This recipe made me aware of this. With less herbs and onion, they cook more lightly brownish, take less time to cook and don't get black. I think that's a big factor why this recipe really doesn't make you feel awful. Thanks for this!
First time i see someone who is not from the middle east actually make propper falafel ❤️ you can use half a potato thinly grated instead of the flour
Yum, definitely trying this. Thanks!

I also like to add some celery stalks and coriander seeds.

Going to try this for sure. Can you bake the falafels instead of frying?
I’ve done it, I used parchment paper it helps brown them without oil.
Aloha
@@giselafiege7169 thank you.
It shall not be as yummy without the deep-frying oily aroma...
Even if some folks believe it's necessary to fry their food in oil in the first place, which is doubtful, it's definitely a bad idea to save and reuse heated oil. The heating process causes hydrogenation of the existing free carbon chains, which basically makes what would have been an acceptable eating oil into an oil that has been hydrogenated during the cooking process. No one should reuse or eat previously cooked oil, no matter the original source.
Agreed!! Love my AIR fryer. Oil free cooking with lovely fried texture. 😁
Agreed.
The Falafel MUST be deep-fried, in order to achieve the correct taste; however, the oil MUST then be discarded. Otherwise, it shall poison anything made in it afterwards.
@@NomadicNaturePhotographer I would have to disagree that you MUST deep fry the falafel, or anything for that matter. Fried foods aren't good for you, your heart, or your waist line. Oils are also known to cause inflammation.
I have been cooking oil free for 6 months, and boy, I can tell a huge difference. Sure things might not taste quite the same, but they still taste good. I have cooked my falafel in my AIR fryer and it still tasted wonderful.
It is NOT necessary to fry things in oil.
@@NomadicNaturePhotographer No, that isn't true. I have several delicious Falafel recipes that can be baked. I usually try the recipes for any new falafels by baking, even if the method uses frying, and I've never had a problem.
@@GardenJensJourney For those who don't have an air fryer, baking also works !!!
I'm loving it😊
Lovely recipe and wordsmithing 😊
In my Falafel is always fresh Koriander, that make they divine.
He said cilantro
@@soledadvalenzuela7996 same thing
@@ardethellis8930 i know. I pointed it out to @Maeo Dok
Best is lots of fresh cilantro/coriander, plus ground coriander seed along with the cumin. For those in U.S., I have to order mine from penzeys to get good quality that actually smells fresh and lemony (the kind from the grocery store smells like nothing).
The falafel looks lovely Wil - I look forward to making it myself! As a side note, I love how organised your kitchen is, I wouldn't be surprised if you have Virgo somewhere in your astrology chart. Have a beautiful day! :)
Enjoy and happy cooking 👨🏻🍳 I’m not well versed in astrology - what gave it away 🕵🏻♂️
@@YEUNGMANCOOKING A Virgo trait is having a preference towards order and tidiness. I have Virgo rising in my chart which explains my neat-freak approach to my environment. For instance all my foodstuff in my cupboards face forward & friends in the past used to wind me up about it & move tins around to annoy me. :)
Very interesting 😎
Thank you so much for sharing this awesome recipe ☺️
You are so brilliant! I love falafel and every recipe I’ve made of yours becomes apart of my regular rotating meals. Have a feeling this will be yet another.
Would you recommend baking these? I have a huge stockpile of dried chickpeas and have been trying to find ways to use them. Can't wait to try this.
Yes
I've had pretty decent results with baked falafel. You have to be careful to not undercook them, or overcook them and dry them out, but if you figure out the right time and temperature, then they're great.
That's what I was wondering... I'd like a baked version of it.
soak the chickpeas overnight. In the morning drain off the excess water and wrap it tight in a cheesecloth. It will sprout in another 24 hours. Steam the sprouts lightly for five minutes and make into sprout salad with finely chopped tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, salt and pepper and finely chopped cilantro and lemon juice. makes an awesome stand alone high protein dish.
susi, we in india make so many dishes with chickpeas. grind 1 cup of soaked chickpeas, add salt and green chillies, add one or two boiled and mashed potatoes. this makes a great stuffing with any other flour flathead that you make..be it wheat, amaranth flour, or maize.
I’ve made similar before- you can totally air fry them, especially from frozen!
Try 10-20 min on 450 F or your air fryer’s max heat.
Also that simple sauce looks awesome!
🥳🥳🥳
Ive been on the fence about getting an air fryer but I think your comment just convinced me… thanks!! 🙌🏼
That’s good to know I can use my air fryer. I’m trying to avoid all that oil.
Did you cover them with oil before air frying?

I love it!!!
Perfect as usual…🌟your smile when you tried them😁😁😁☀️☀️☀️☀️
Thank you for sharing this! Can I used canned chickpeas since they’re already sitting in water?
I think you can, but you'd have to use more flour because of the moisture. too much flour changes the texture and the taste. definitely let them dry completely on paper towels if you want to give it a try with canned chickpeas
traditional falafel balls are green, so I had twice as much parsley and cilantro
I am SO glad I found you because you use the same vegetables I eat every day. My cooking was too plain and I was getting tired of it. You took it to a whole new level painlessly. I also love the presentation of your videos and your tips are very helpful. I think I could eat only your recipes from now on. thanks
It's really good! Thanks
🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Would these hold up in an air fryer for those of us on low/no oil regimens?
I personally have not tried, but I would imagine it would 🥳
I have cooked a similar falafel recipe in my AIR fryer. Worked fine. May crumble, so handle carefully.
I've baked a similar recipe in the oven and it worked great!
Come for the jokes, stay for the delicious looking food! ☺️
😎
Came for the cool stayed for the ledgeball
I am glad I found your channel. I love falafel. Will definitely try this weekend.
You MAKE LOVE to food, I like your show. Keep those delicious recipes coming.
Wil, could these be baked instead of fried?
Yes, or cooked in AIR fryer. 😉
No, as the raw chickpeas will not fully cook in an oven. The deep frying is necessary to remove the raw texture and flavor of the chickpeas. You can use all the same ingredients but use cooked chickpeas however, and bake it. It will just be like a normal bean burger recipe then, not the crispy fluffy falafel texture. But still very good with the same flavor profile. Personally I make real deep fried falafel with raw soaked chickpeas once every year on a special occasion, and the rest of the year I make a bean burger patty out of cooked chickpeas, rice, oats, and all the same flavorings, and bake it. The deep fried ones are too heavy to eat all the time for me but you can still get the same flavor in baked form, or cooked on the stovetop with a light brushing of oil.
@@sibelb4152 Thank you!
Wondering if they could be baked instead of fried.
Air fryer maybe ?
Use parchment paper to help brown them without oil.
Aloha
They can but they will never be as moist inside as fried because oil doesn;t let much moisture out and cooks them a lot faster than in an oven
@@niken538 I understand and yes you are correct. But there are some of us who don’t mind the drier version just add lots of tahini sauce. Lol
I use an air fryer. Sure, they may be drier to some, but additional sauce may help with that. 😉

My pleasure 🙌🏻👨🏻🍳 Happy cooking
My falafel was always a bit "heavy". Does the lemon in combination with the baking powder make it lighter and airy?
Don't put any flour in. :-)
Keep the mixture light and fluffy, do not compress the balls

Looks delicious thanks for the tip about the avocado oil..🥑..Love your channel!
Did you cook the chickpeas or did you just soak them overnight?
Just soak
This is pretty similar to my recipe, except I leave out the flour/baking soda/potato starch (which I imagine helps in the frying process), and I use a lot more herbs... probably twice as much... including mint.
Always good though.
Make sure you don't undercook your chickpeas or it very well could make you feel awful.
Love your videos! Thank you so much!
