ok look. screaming in studio is gonna be way different than screaming live. mainly due to the amount of energy the crowds ambience is throwing back at you. you get excited. you cant help it. same thing with alot of vocalists. alot of vocalists can sing in studio, but when it comes to a live performance, they get excited and sing off key. anyone who has ever played in front of a pumped crowd like this knows EXACTLY what im talking about.
At first while i was watching this i thought that Alex's voice must have been pretty tired but then in the breakdown at 3:15 the highs sound badass and the lows sound EXACT to the record. I can't fricken wait to see these guys at warped this year.
Im in a band myself.. try screaming for a while in a concert, it gets tiring. and yes even if it's done right. If you try to perfect it 100% in a show without a mistake, the likeliness of straining and killing your voice is high.
Let's try to be respectful and lenient on Alex. I've heard him perform like a god on two albums and an ep. He's going to have bad performances sometimes. And for the record, I don't think this is as terrible as everyone seems to think it is, he's doing better than I could so I'm keeping my mouth shut
I'm not assuming this is what you mean but saying "I mean he's using triggers, and his kicks are still awfully sloppy" implies that you think using triggers makes it easier, which is not the case. They only make higher speeds much easier to distinguish so it doesn't sound like a clump of notes, that problem is that it makes little mistakes much more noticeable. Nonetheless I agree with you though, they were pretty sloppy at this show, probably just had an off day.
@ThatDrummerKid2014 Actually, if he can't pull off his screams like they sound on the album, there's a problem. His job should be to sound like himself, which he isn't. He looks like he's concentrating too hard on the high scream. The original commenter's post is not invalid at all when you think about it. Your logic is basically like saying, "He wrote the song, so it's okay if he's bad at it." Just, no.
Everybody saying doing vocals will eventually strain your throat, shut up. You're obviously doing them wrong, they are not supposed to cause any harm in any way. Ask any REAL vocalist, not just based off stupid kids on RUclips
@davidxthunder I honestly wonder why people like you look up videos that you know you're probably not gonna like. Then comment and just try to piss everyone off. And once again, the proper technique shit, doesn't matter. I'm almost positive that band you mentioned Melissa Cross? Yeah, I've never heard of them and I'm familiar with a lot of good bands that aren't really heard of. And I'm pretty sure they don't have a huge fanbase like CG. There might be a reason for that.... >.>
Instead of ripping on the screaming GOD that is Alex Koehler, can I just point out that the drummer isn't so hot..I mean he's using triggers, and his kicks are still awfully sloppy. I love this fucking band, studio and live, the only reason I pointed this out is because everyone else fucking is.
@drtbyker123 Obviously you've never screamed a whole set. It's actually surprisingly difficult, plus, in this video at least, it's shitty mixing, not the fault of Alex.
@1Ryoga or your a Fanboy who will defend him no matter what. I LOVE chelsea grin's cd...but common, you know these vocals are deffinently not up to par.
@ThatDrummerKid2014 No, yours is. It's like saying a surgeon can open your stomach up, shit in it, and stitch it closed. No, Alex gives no effort or shits when he plays shows.
the "let's see you do better" argument is so stupid. in truth, the vocals on this are not as good as they should be. here's the fact: i don't care who you are. if you can't reproduce the vocal live, DO NOT RECORD IT. @drtbyker123 is absolutely correct: if this is your only job in the world, DO IT RIGHT.

@proggod876 I'll be there too. Stoked as fuck.

@soadfreak8888 YEA MAN...i u see me....ima ripp off my whife beater in the middle of the pit!!!
gonna loose my mind lol
@drtbyker123 He sounded way better in Milwaukee. And dude it's fucking hard to keep your vocals consistent at each show

wtf man its a youtube video if u saw them live it would be much better dont think if they had a bad singer they just leave him they would kick his out
Don't critisize somthing you don't understand.
kool group of doods
Dude it's not that easy being a death core vocalist. Screaming like that for a long time will put a lot of strain on your throat.
Love his new highs but he can't do them live "/

@9rmetal Does he cut his hair? Yeah, I'm pretty sure he is not Muslim.. ?
@ThatDrummerKid2014 No, yours is. It's like saying a surgeon can open your stomach up, shit in it, and stitch it closed. No, Alex gives no effort or shits when he plays shows.
@drtbyker123 hit me bro. LLLEEETTSSS DOOO TTTTHHHHHIIIIISSSS *headbuts a cement wall
1:45 THAT IS NOT OF THIS WORLD.
i don't think his vocals are that bad to be fair, i think he's just picked up quite a few bad habits.
I agree, talk shit when you sell records and play shows all over the US and Europe, then you have shit talking rights!
The problem is that he doesn't put power in the scream, so there is no distortion, just an ugly scream.
@LeestepGoblin94 i know, i don't either. but i dont claim to be a good vocalist either.
@drtbyker123 Can you do that? nope.
@drtbyker123 If you were in a band you wouldnt be saying this.
@drtbyker123 i thought it was good
Vox let him self go

@drtbyker123 why dont you show your talent first before you trash talk dude
01:01 midget xD
@ThatDrummerKid2014 hahahaha chelsea grin fanboy
@ThatDrummerKid2014 And for the record, I could do a hell of a better job than Alex. Don't believe me, check out my vocal covers.
@ThatDrummerKid2014 haha chelsea grin fanboy. i love them just as much as the next guy. but his vocals suck ass. the rest of the band is amazing
