  • Warning..... Exposed bones and human skulls in this video......I have never seen a cemetery in this condition with human remains exposed throughout the cemetery. This cemetery sits in a neighborhood along a main road, while I was there I felt so sorry for the deceased. It's an older cemetery so I assume there isn't anyone left to take care of it.

By who? Unless there is an actual law on the books that says a cemetery has to be maintained to a certain standard and specifies who is responsible for it, no law has actually been broken. And the criminal negligence claim is a joke. Law doesn't work like that. Not maintaining a graveyard doesn't meet the legal definition of "criminal" anywhere.

As a Funeral arranger and officiant, there isn't one single grave that has gone into that ground went in without the absolute shattered heart of their loved-ones. Some of those folk used what little money they had to give their people a "proper" burial. It hurts my heart after looking into the eyes of an elderly gentleman say something like "Could Margaret be buried with her dentures? She was a lady and would want to look pretty as she could". You let me know. I'm in England these days, but if you want to take up-for this cemetery or others, I will throw in. Thank you very kindly for your heart and your knowledge and the fact you took the time to share it with us.

There's simply just not enough room to bury everyone. These old cemeteries were here before the 50 year clause went into effect in a lot of them. No living relatives who care or even knew them or live far away now and no funds to continue it. Burial plots are no longer forever, there is a limit in the contracts to 50 years in most now, then they pulverize and move your bones to smaller locations and reuse the plot. Simply not enough room for all the dead to be buried anymore.

This is absolutely NOT the worst in Louisiana. The worst is in Baton Rouge. Louisiana has a long history of abandoned cemeteries. I attended Thomy Lafon Elementary, and it was built on top of Oak Grove cemetery. I was wondering how could the city of New Orleans not know that. The school was rumored to be haunted, and it's past history came to light after the hurricane Katrina.

One of the reasons why you will see exposed human remains in Louisiana cemeteries, is because normal burial of human remains is impossible. This is because, the water table in Louisiana, especially in New Orleans, is inches to maybe a 2-3 feet below the top soil. In contrast, in most of North America the water table is at least 20 feet below the top soil. Therefore in Louisiana, intact human remains are entombed in above ground tombs and mausoleums for the most part Graves,if dug are very shallow with concrete ot granite slabs placed above the remains.

The only human kindness and caring that declined is that of the folks who Knew the folks buried here. Everyone who ever knew or cared for these folks is dead and gone, perhaps buried next to them, or in some other slightly less forgotten cemetery in some other parish. Only slightly less forgotten because the folk buried there spanned more recent period of time.
Don’t be fooled into thinking the dead give a god damn. They are gone forever and their concerns gone with them.
Cemeteries are for the Living. For those left behind who grieve. But all thru human history, every burial ground was ultimately forgotten as those for whom they mattered passed in turn and were also buried and, in turn, forgotten.
Westminster may preserve the graves of those famous in history, yet the vast multitudes who lived, suffered both joy and sorrow, and passed have left no trace, except perhaps in the occasional excavation for a new road, or building; some bone or artifact dug up and wondered over, its owner nameless and unremembered.
This is what cemeteries are. Demonstrations of our brevity. Reminders that we, too, shall be forgotten.
We need not make a fuss over the bones of those no one recalls. Some progenitor lying under an unreadable marker in some overgrown field we have never visited and never shall. Rather, these decrepit cemeteries ought to cause us to pay more attention to those who yet live. Those who still live in need of care, and concern; those still able to appreciate a kind thought or gesture.
I do not see these places as sad. I seem them as a caution to truly cherish life and the living while we have it.

In Pennsylvania we have care-takers who are paid to take care of the cemetery grounds. Usually, a house is provided for the care-taker and their family either right on the grounds or very close by so there is some added security for the grounds. I feel very sorry for the souls buried in the Louisiana cemeteries. It's so sad to see that.
Thank you for bringing awareness to the tragic state these cemeteries are in.

In the late 1960s, our dad drove our RV through Tijuana, Mexico, on our way to beach camping south in Ensenada. There was one area on the south of Tijuana where there was an old cemetery on a slope next to the road. There were a few exposed wood coffins and various bones were spilled out in the dirt. The coffins were very old and rotten, and the cemetery appeared to be abandoned. Sad to see remains just gradually being washed down the hillside.

I was born and raised in Lake Charles, The first section of cemetery in this video is the old "City Cemetery" its actually closed and has been for a while. The 2nd section is directly adjacent to the north of the City cemetery and are both very old and not in the richest part of town, the combination of that and the storms and sad to say lack of upkeep by the city are the main reasons for these conditions, if i remember correctly both these cemeteries are owned by the city. Neither of these are part of Orange Grove Cemetery, which if you notice in the background across the "main road" (which is actually a side street) he mentions, is the Orange Grove Cemetery aka Graceland Cemetery. It was Est. 1885 and as he mentioned it is 13 acres and has over 9k graves, i have several family members buried here. Orange Grove has people responsible for landscaping and upkeep, it is also independently owned where as the other 2 are not. All that being said, just to clear up a few things. I do agree it's damn shame for any cemetery no matter how old, its location or what the ethnic background of the deceased, to get to this condition. Unfortunately, it would take a few volunteers or the community, to come together to make this right. the city or the state or any other dept that should do it, won't do it. I can tell you, if you are ever in the mood some paranormal experiences, Orange Grove cemetery can be a very interesting place to check out.

My view is people sometimes put to much emphasis on human remains. To me the spirit is far more important. Many of my faimly have passed on . But I when my earthly Father passed on I touched his body realize he was gone the body was empty. I don't need a fancy burial spot or beautiful cemetery to bring me memories. The memories are already been planted. . With that being said and the fact I worked in cemeteries most of my life. I even lived in one for a couple of years. I do like walking through them reading the names and dates. The history. I saw a stone that had the ancestors several generations back. I thought that was cool. The ancestors came from France. . But lots of people don't have that kind of money. . For that. So I don't think cemeteries should be top priorities.

My wife and I go down to Bayou country regularly to fish and gorge ourselves on mudbugs during crawfish season. We usually roam the Baritaria, LA area. We went a little early last year around March 13. The previous August they were hit with a pretty bad hurricane. 7 MONTHS later there were piles of garbage and debris everywhere needing to be cleaned up, trash and debris littering the wetlands, shrimp boats still beached everywhere…it was absolutely awful. The one thing that sticks in my head more than anything and I took a picture of it was a coffin sticking straight up into the sky from its vault obviously from the cemetery being flooded out by the hurricane. I would think that after making sure everyone in the area was safe and being taken care of the first order of business would be to stick coffins back into ground. I couldn’t believe that no one took care of this 7 months later and that poor sob was still roasting in the Louisiana heat. Unbelievable..

Although a few of the graves were as recent as the 1990's, I doubt that any surviving family would want to (or be able to) pay for upkeep. Cinder block is ugly construction grade basic material. These people were certainly poor folk. They did the best they could according to their means.
Having said that, why for obviously many decades there's been no maintenance, tells me there never was any. This is an unorganized damn near potter's field, might have just been donated land, with no expectations of perpetual care.

Who they were along with their hopes and dreams died and moved on when they took their last breaths. The relics are just that: leftovers of a vehicle that transported a life. I hope their memories and names live on in the hearts of their loved ones and on the lips that maybe tell stories about them. Who they were, their lifeforce or essence or soul, is still here: it's just that their energy is rearranged.

If it's an area that no one visits they don't think about it. I don't blame the young people for not taking care of it, it does upset me when graves are vandalized or possibly robbed. What an absolute disgrace that these people’s Rest In Peace has been disturbed in so many ways. Damage from hurricanes is inevitable, yes, but is there nothing in place to respond to hurricane damage in cemeteries? Many of these people might not have relatives in the area anymore. It’s possible the families who are still in the area probably don’t have the means to repair catastrophic damage of any kind.
Hurricane damage is probably not the only cause of damage here. I live in a part of the country where these types of vaults aren’t as common, but we do have them. When there is damage due to grave robbing, those are the types of vaults that are typically targeted. It sounds horrible because it is. As I look at the damage here, one looks like something large and heavy landed on it hard enough to split the concrete lid into two pieces. Others look like they deteriorated over time to the point that a hurricane could easily create an opening, or someone could make entry through a side, like one you showed towards the end of the video.
Damage to this extent in a cemetery that is in plain sight of the public, especially when human remains are exposed AND visible should have been addressed. I don’t know if FEMA would be able to be of help but it sounds like a good idea to ask. Have you checked to see if you can find out who owns the cemetery? The owner is just as responsible for its upkeep and condition, which is obviously deplorable.
I hope you’re able to find a way to get this matter before those who can help restore this cemetery and others like it. Good luck to you.

I cut the grass and cleaned up the graves over about a month and kept it that way for the time I lived in the area. Unfortunately i haven't lived there in over 30 years now so I expect it looks like before I ever touched it if not worse. It is sickening to see this cemetery left like this with bones left exposed and the state doesn't giver a damn. I refuse to be buried and eventually my grave would end up like these or built over. All the love these people had, their tears in life, their grief, their happiness. We should love each other and take care of each other. Not kill, rape abuse ,torture etc. So much evil sin and humans diabolical to other people and children. Dear God have mercy on us all.

It would be great if every town had a volunteer group that would go out and clean up long forgotten cemeteries! I would definitely volunteer to do this! So sad! I will have to do some research to see how we could come up with a plan!

It is not always the case where people are grave Robbing. Many reasons that grave could be exposed. Especially with above ground vaults which are really not vaults but grave liners. The difference is vaults are lined with material that old days was usually some type of tar but many are lined with plastic or different material depending on what people want to pay . And vaults would have sealed leads. But grave liners are usually just concrete. No sealer . So over time water would get in and casket would float up forcing the leads off. Then when they settled down with the water evaporate some times the leads don't settle straight so they may be gaps where the leads are crooked. . Putting sealers won't make a grave liner water proof . The water seeps though the concrete. Plus the human body being made up of mostly water will naturally release water as it decays. Sometimes times damage could be done by heavy equipment use in cemeteries for burial or grass cutting. Trees falling on above leads can burst leads. Sometimes tree roots can alter graves over time. . Now I never been to Louisiana. But I been told by people who have worked in the areas that they can't bury to deep because the water level being so high. Some grave damage could be vandalism. But a lot of other reasons could also be the reason . Across animals can sometimes be the reason bones are missing. Or scattered. And across natural decay when air gets exposed a body decaying is quicker. . Any way just a few things to ponder over.

This puts in perspective that no matter who we are in life, we all going to end up the same way, it's a sad and a scary thought, sometimes I think it's it all worth it, the struggles, the heartaches and headaches of life it self, when it's all said and done, we can't escape the same tragic fate, may GOD HAVE MERCY ON ALL OF US.

I've always loved old cemeteries, but I've never understood the concept of cemeteries. People are under the impression that these places are eternal. They wither away, just like everything else. Even the space to bury people will run out, eventually.

It truly is heartbreaking! I am not really knowledgeable about what damage is done by hurricanes to the cemeteries, but a lot of the damage I see seems to be from vandalism and grave theft.

I'm from the Midwest. I've been to Louisiana once (1984). It was the first time I had seen so many above-ground vaults. I was told burials were done that way because of flooding/hurricanes. Being from the Midwest I was used to burials below ground including the vaults. After seeing this video it seems there might be more protection for the deceased if the remains/vaults were buried below ground.

I have been a mortician for over thirty years. I work long hours to make sure every human body in my care is clean, combed, dressed, made up beautifully, buried with tokens and letters from loved ones and final wishes are fulfilled. Seeing this carnage and disrespect pisses me off. Who the hell is in charge of this place? I am shocked that there isn't even a historical society, fraternal organization or garden club that could step in here. It is common for eagle scouts to do old cemetery clean ups. In my area, there is not a single veteran that doesn't get an American Flag on their grave. Also, the Asian population picnics every year at the graves of their loved ones. People are more respectful where I live. Are there any funeral homes in the area that could get involved? This destruction indicates to me the entire population in that area is derelict and dysfunctional. Disgraceful!

There was a video that surfaced many years ago in the 90's about a guy who apparently did a guide on how to rob graves, and went into disgusting detail about it. It's unknown if it's legit, to this day. But seeing this graveyard, it definitely seems a lot more plausible to me now.
      Very enraging.

I share the sadness of seeing the cemetery in ruins like this, but I think eventually, this will happen to many more cemeteries across the country. It's sad, but our society just doesn't seem to care about them as they once did. What is even more disturbing to me, is that when the camera peeks into the vaults and crypts. One expects to see remains , but litter? There were a few shots where I saw empty drink bottles and other refuse items where you would not expect to find any.

I am not suggesting that this is what happened but it is possible that the trash and other debris was deposited in the graves during flooding.

I think it's beautiful that nature reclaims her own. Burying people in concrete tombs is just not natural. I'd be out there if I lived closer with some concrete resealing those remains back in though, that's just a shame.

I'm sure flooding also scattered the remains as well as vandals. I know you are wanting to help by meeting up and mowing and weed eating. But who will keep it up? I don't think you sending pictures and filing paperwork will help this time any more than it did last time. I would contact a news station and newspapers to write about it. It would be nice if the Veterans were relocated to a Veterans cemetery.

There would likely need to be serious inquiries about whether FEMA offers grants to salvage a cemetery. Sadly, it is not a unique experience. I was on the cemetery board in Pennsylvania for a number of years and this is reality. We need to do something to make things better but there’s too much of this around.

Thank you for sharing this with us. Truly sad and I am sure the state & or county has money to be used there. Someone owns that land. Disgraceful the way the dead are treated. I live in Florida as well. It’s been about 10 years since I visited my grandparents grave side. My sister and I are going next weekend to make sure they are being maintained. Thank you again. This is a real eye opener.
