My favorite is Super Mario Bros 3 not only is it endlessly replay-able, has great music and fun mini-games but it has hundreds of secrets in the game that people are still finding today!

For its generation absolutely but I think Wonder and NSMBU blows SMW out of the water graphically and I'll even throw in NSMB2 on 3DS in there. Its that graphical sprite style that holds up for SMW though and not just SMW but any game with those sprite graphics in general.

"polished/glossy" look, and Wonder has some of that DNA in it, but feels a lot fresher. Prob a matter of taste at this point because I'm partial to pixel art. Not to mention the sheer nostalgia of SMW.

Smb3 will always be the best to me. The gameplay with the p meter was done to perfection. When you watch speed runners play, building up speed, it feels like the game was meant to be played that way. The over maps are great, they have multiple paths, great music, fun mini games, great power ups. A perfect game IMO And great list. Now I must subscribe!

SMB2 will probably always be my favourite, simply because it was the first videogame we ever had/played/saw, the one game we played with the entire family and I played through it more then any other game since. But it has always been the black sheep, especially after SMB3 released, which at the time I liked so much better as well. But there's no arguing nostalgia and for me smb2 sits firmly on that throne and the game has slowly grown on me all over again during the years of playing all things under the sun. I keep returning to it every now and then and just love it every time.
You criticized SMB2 for having the same repetitive boss, but Birdo is just a mini boss. The actual bosses of each world are varied. Only Mouser and Tryclide appear more than once. It's a lot more varied than the first game where you just fought Bowser at the end of each world
Yes, and in both cases their second appearance was a completely differently fight to solve. Even the birdo fights had plenty of variations to them in terms of both their ammo and boss room. I always thought the boss fights in that game were great.
2d mario is always a good time. Personally i like world the best but thats mostly because i grew up playing it on my GBA. Smb3 is really good too. I played through it after playing the New SMB games and i found the similarities to be very interesting. To think a game play formula from the NES still worked 20 years after the fact goes to show how good these games are
I love these lists, especially Mario related. My wife and I have recently been playing 2 player on SMB3. Level by level. The graphics, controls, music, to this day still holds up. I am 45 now and still get the same feeling of excitement when I see the Racoon Suit Mario flying like the cover art pic. A flying racoon Mario, an all yellow background which absolutely did not match the usual Mario color scheme. The title with the Tail hanging off the 3??? What is this wizardry?? I was 10 and my family couldn’t afford an nes at the time so I would play the video games in my mind by getting a copy of Nintendo power and playing in my imagination. I would memorize the tips and tricks and study guides and then would go over friends house and play when possible. I wouldnt want to do anything but play their Nintendo. To them it was nothing because they had it and could play when they wanted. For me….it was SUPER MARIO BROS 3eeeeeeeee
I definitely agree with you girl! I used to play the SNES Mario games growing up because my step mom let me play on her old console. So Super Mario World and Super Mario 3 have a special place in my heart due to them being some of the very first video games I ever played. But even with it being newer I think Super Mario Wonder is easily my favorite one I’ve ever played. I loved loved how they made it fun again to play Mario like it was when I was a little kid playing on the SNES. ✨❤️ Anyways, keep doing great with your videos like you always do! My heart will always belong to Super Mario Bros 3. It added so much distinct character to the Mushroom Kingdom between the new art style, the overworld map, the secrets, the power-ups... I also grew up playing the Gameboy port (Super Mario Advance 4: SMB3) constantly, so my nostalgia goggles are definitely playing a role in my view of the game. Still, I'll always be thankful that SMB3 was my introduction to these amazing games.
A lesser-known fact about Doki Doki Panic is that it did begin its life as a Mario concept. It was revisited for the final game for a Japanese promotional event. In effect, SMB 2 kind of brought it back to its original intent.
I remember when my friend, who lived down the street, got the Super Nintendo and Super Mario World for Christmas. I came over that same day and spent the night. I was blown away by the game. This game is in my top 5 of all time games.
If I had played every single 2D Mario game my list would most likely be very similar to this. This list is fantastic! Mario Wonder and World are my absolute peak games. 3 I only dabbled in but I'd probably agree. I question how they'll do another game like Wonder down the line... I think an expansion would be awesome at some point though! Great ranking 💯
New Wii and New U honestly had a problem where the level design felt very empty at times. This was likely to accommodate the 4 players, but it’s really noticeable imo compared to other platformers old and new. Luigi U was a nice refresher from that by having its levels shorter and less overly spacious. Mario Wonder fixed this problem too imo. It always feels like there’s something interesting around the corner of every level. They even had those nice short challenge levels, so it really makes me think the devs took that to heart. Wonder is definitely the best 2D Mario, it’s no recency bias. It truly felt like Nintendo’s actual sequel to Super Mario World we never got. (Not counting Yoshi’s Island which is great, but too different from 2D Mario imo)
Land 2 is probably the only 2d mario that I have a lot of nostalgia for. I kind of forgot until some of the gameplay clips were on screen. looks like it's time to pick up Wonder

And it has everything to do with Mario considering it started out as a new Mario game in concept shortly after Mario 1 released, and was worked on by Miyamoto and a couple other members of his Mario 1 team at the time. It was simply re-appropriated to the Doki Doki nonsense because of the Japanese festival that Nintendo was catering to at that time; so they gave the game an Arabian Nights skin amd we got the infamous DOKI DOKI PANIC that everybody TOTALLY forgets is essentially a Nintendo-made Mario knockoff game of their own IP!! (Check out the Gaming Historian's video about Doki Doki Panic to get further details about its inception) So yeah, everything you just said is patently untrue. Never jump to conclusions just because of what the majority says. 🙂🙌
My favorite Mario game is Donkey Kong 94 on GB. The name “Mario” isn't everything, look at the gameplay. Look at the acrobatics that will be ported to the N64, the level design, the risk/reward system. Unjustly mistaken for a simple port of the plumber's original arcade game, this was a consecration and a step towards the future of the games that came down to us.
I maybe bias, I wont' say my age, but let's just say I got Super Mario World when I was about 12 yrs old (it had come out about a yr before or something) and played the heck out of it.. took me months to beat it (new to gaming, was a kid, no yt videos for walkthroughs, no friends who owned a SNES, just me and immersed in this world for 3 for months daily until I beat it. I havent' played it ever since cause it gets me super nostalgic and makes me feel even scared. Kinda like that first love you had... you always remember but never want to run into them again cause you're afraid of what is reality.

The one thing I'll give Super Mario World over Mario Bros 3 (for me at least) is the soundtrack is amazing work from Koji Kondo and the SNES soundchip. Mario Bros 3 had nice music but it's still held back by the NES limitations, but the Super Nintendo Mario opened up a whole new lane of style and composition and sounds for Mario series that has barely been surpassed since. There are tunes in this game that are almost out of character for the series going forward cuz they are so epically symphonic like Classical music alone, let alone for video game music about an Italian plumber in a Mushroom Kingdom.
My personal ranking for the original Super Mario Bros on NES, is at least an A... even if it is primitive by all standards of Mario games today... it is THE classic 2d platformer formula and Mario formula, and it is infinitely replayable over other supposed better Mario games... when people think classic 2D Mario...this game, the music, the power-ups, the mechanics, this game is usually first to mind, despite something like Mario 3 or Super Mario World being better.
This is where you and I have been on the same page for 99% of the video, couldn't agree more, I had the same experiences. However for me Mario bros 2 is just a lot higher for me because of early 90s nostalgia

SMB3 feels like the first true Mario game in full form. Maps, Mushroom Kingdom, all of it. I love this list. I want to say that I recently got a switch and bought New super mario bro deluxe and I love it. I think it's because for me it was something new and fresh. I didn't play through the entire series like most people. So I didn't experience the same fatigue that most other people did from the 'new' series.
Your thoughts on the New Super Mario Bros. games aren't much different from most others I've seen. I'd get defensive, but nah. Wonder is certainly a step up in terms of presentation and wow factor, but I have an idiotic bias for NSMB romps. Other than that, I like your list and respect your opinions.
So I consider World 2 to be more the start of the Yoshi series than a mainline game and Land 3 stars Wario who later got the warioland series therefore starting his own franchise. Both games are great but I just felt they didn’t fit the list.
I don’t know why people don’t count Yoshi’s Island as a Mario game, when it’s right there in the title: Super Mario World 2 (USA), Super Mario (JAP), Super Mario Advance 3 (everywhere). It feels more like Mario than Woolly World and Crafted World. It would be my S - #1.
It’s kinda funny that The Lost Levels was penalized for being too hard and for New Soup Luigi U it was a plus! I like Lost Levels and it was more fun in Mario All-Stars although I have beaten the original on the Wii no warps. I respect your opinion completely though Josie and you are entitled. No one should be mad because you don’t like any game you don’t like. But don’t judge me for liking DK64. I know it was a collectathon but kids playing it at the time might only get a few games a year and some liked having a long time to play it to 100% it.

Super Mario Bros 2 The Lost Levels = The worst Mario game ever made. It's nothing but a bunch of cheap deaths and trolling nonsense like poison mushroom. AVOID Super Mario Bros 3 = The Best Super Mario Game EVER made. The jumping mechanics is perfect, the level design is perfect, the music, the different worlds and atmosphere still holds up.
SMB and The Lost Levels IMO would get A and B. To be fair, most of my playtime in both was in Super Mario All*Stars, which makes them both easier by implementing saves. I definitely agree that SMB3 is Mario perfection and belongs in the S tier, along with SMW and SMB Wonder. I did not care for the US version of SMB2; D maybe, because I'm sure there are better games more deserving of the C spot, and it wasn't total F-tier trash either. I have played SML2 on Game Boy decades ago, but it's been too long to remember enough to know where I'd put it on the list, but it would be pretty high up. So many newer Mario games I would have to give similar treatment either for the same reason or because I never had the chance to finish them (especially the New SMB series). There are a lot of portable games especially, because I never really was much of a handheld gamer and could never bring myself to play them long enough to completion all cramped up on a tiny screen.
If I grew up playing NSMB (DS) and never played any of the sequels, but have recently played all classic home console 2D Mario games and Wonder (including Yoshi’s Island, which deserves to be on this list, but excluding lost levels) are they worth playing?
I'd say so. My recommendation? Play each NSMB in a methodical fashion; maybe space them out weeks at a time. Playing all four of them in succession may lead to getting sick of 'em faster.
Killer list! If anyone hasn’t played Rayman Legends yet, you really should. Its AMAZING! Not dumping on SMB Wonder cause I haven’t played it yet, but I’ve seen alot of people comparing them. Legends is amazing, so that can’t be a bad thing
I would of still included Super Mario World 2. I have played it emulated and it just doesn't feel right even with that emulation was done say on like the Wii U eshop. It plays differently on original hardware and it is really great and I would argue better looking than the first Mario World. Even if Mario is a baby riding on Yoshi. It introduced a lot of awesome stuff as well.

Entertainment mediums especially. 🤦♂️ Take for this example, me; I don't think the first Super Mario Bros game is really all that great at an ordinary, objective level (not taking its iconic status and symbolism into account). And I played the damn thing when it first came out and have played it many times throughout the following decades, including on SMB All-Stars many times. It is just such a basic platforming game and is overshadowed by pretty much everything that came after it! But that's alright, because it was the first, so of course it would be the most primitive and the most basic; and I am ok with that and have been for a long time. It's still a good Mario game, but there are many others that are SOOOOOO much better than the first! If I were to state this at a crowded convention or make a video about it on RUclips or just online in general -------------- so many gamers would lose their GD MINDS!!!!!!! From just a SIMPLE opinion on a game that he has played his whole life..! Even people and other RUclipsrs on this platform from my own age demographic would give me sh*t about this opinion and I would NEVER hear the end of it - from Anyone.... Super Mario Bros 3 is on a level on his own. Graphics, Gameplay, Innovation, Characters. Its the canon for all Super Mario legacy.

Mario Wonder finally brought 2D Mario to the level of creativity of the 3D ones.

Fight against Birdo are far more interesting than the fights against Boom Boom in SMB3.

My personal ranking for the original Super Mario Bros on NES, is at least an A... even if it is primitive by all standards of Mario games today... it is THE classic 2d platformer formula and Mario formula, and it is infinitely replayable over other supposed better Mario games... when people think classic 2D Mario...this game, the music, the power-ups, the mechanics, this game is usually first to mind, despite something like Mario 3 or Super Mario World being better.
Without all the glitz and glamor, Super Mario Bros 1 is B or C. It is super basic... but it IS the first game in the franchise after all. 🙅♂️👾🕹
This is where you and I have been on the same page for 99% of the video, couldn't agree more, I had the same experiences. However for me Mario bros 2 is just a lot higher for me because of early 90s nostalgia
This is an excellent analysis! I agree on just about all of it. Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World are my faves and it really is tough to choose which is better. SMB3 feels like the first true Mario game in full form. Maps, Mushroom Kingdom, all of it. Do you have a video like this for the other style of Mario games, the adventure ones, like Super Mario 64, Sunshine, Galaxy, and others of that nature?
Super mario world is my fav mario game of all time and the one that got me into gaming in general be playing for 30yrs now since i was 6
I love this list. I want to say that I recently got a switch and bought New super mario bro deluxe and I love it. I think it's because for me it was something new and fresh. I didn't play through the entire series like most people. So I didn't experience the same fatigue that most other people did from the 'new' series.
Your thoughts on the New Super Mario Bros. games aren't much different from most others I've seen. I'd get defensive, but nah.
Wonder is certainly a step up in terms of presentation and wow factor, but I have an idiotic bias for NSMB romps.
Other than that, I like your list and respect your opinions.

@LeonSKennedy7777 Nah, Yoshi’s island is S tier, but it’s your opinion so I respect it.
So I consider World 2 to be more the start of the Yoshi series than a mainline game and Land 3 stars Wario who later got the warioland series therefore starting his own franchise. Both games are great but I just felt they didn’t fit the list.
I don’t know why people don’t count Yoshi’s Island as a Mario game, when it’s right there in the title: Super Mario World 2 (USA), Super Mario (JAP), Super Mario Advance 3 (everywhere). It feels more like Mario than Woolly World and Crafted World.
It would be my S - #1.
Nintendo doesn’t even count SMW2 as a mainline Mario game in their list.

It’s kinda funny that The Lost Levels was penalized for being too hard and for New Soup Luigi U it was a plus! I like Lost Levels and it was more fun in Mario All-Stars although I have beaten the original on the Wii no warps. I respect your opinion completely though Josie and you are entitled. No one should be mad because you don’t like any game you don’t like. But don’t judge me for liking DK64. I know it was a collectathon but kids playing it at the time might only get a few games a year and some liked having a long time to play it to 100% it.

Super Mario Bros 3 = The Best Super Mario Game EVER made. The jumping mechanics is perfect, the level design is perfect, the music, the different worlds and atmosphere still holds up.

SMB and The Lost Levels IMO would get A and B. To be fair, most of my playtime in both was in Super Mario All*Stars, which makes them both easier by implementing saves. I definitely agree that SMB3 is Mario perfection and belongs in the S tier, along with SMW and SMB Wonder. I did not care for the US version of SMB2; D maybe, because I'm sure there are better games more deserving of the C spot, and it wasn't total F-tier trash either.
I have played SML2 on Game Boy decades ago, but it's been too long to remember enough to know where I'd put it on the list, but it would be pretty high up. So many newer Mario games I would have to give similar treatment either for the same reason or because I never had the chance to finish them (especially the New SMB series). There are a lot of portable games especially, because I never really was much of a handheld gamer and could never bring myself to play them long enough to completion all cramped up on a tiny screen.

If I grew up playing NSMB (DS) and never played any of the sequels, but have recently played all classic home console 2D Mario games and Wonder (including Yoshi’s Island, which deserves to be on this list, but excluding lost levels) are they worth playing?
I think if you like that style they are. They’re good platformers and if you need something to play they’re quality
I'd say so.
My recommendation? Play each NSMB in a methodical fashion; maybe space them out weeks at a time.
Playing all four of them in succession may lead to getting sick of 'em faster.

If anyone hasn’t played Rayman Legends yet, you really should. Its AMAZING! Not dumping on SMB Wonder cause I haven’t played it yet, but I’ve seen alot of people comparing them. Legends is amazing, so that can’t be a bad thing
I would of still included Super Mario World 2. I have played it emulated and it just doesn't feel right even with that emulation was done say on like the Wii U eshop. It plays differently on original hardware and it is really great and I would argue better looking than the first Mario World. Even if Mario is a baby riding on Yoshi. It introduced a lot of awesome stuff as well.
Man I’m the only one who thinks NSMB2 is god tier. The coin runs I did collecting coins were such a good time.

Take for this example, me; I don't think the first Super Mario Bros game is really all that great at an ordinary, objective level (not taking its iconic status and symbolism into account). And I played the damn thing when it first came out and have played it many times throughout the following decades, including on SMB All-Stars many times. It is just such a basic platforming game and is overshadowed by pretty much everything that came after it! But that's alright, because it was the first, so of course it would be the most primitive and the most basic; and I am ok with that and have been for a long time. It's still a good Mario game, but there are many others that are SOOOOOO much better than the first!
If I were to state this at a crowded convention or make a video about it on RUclips or just online in general -------------- so many gamers would lose their GD MINDS!!!!!!! From just a SIMPLE opinion on a game that he has played his whole life..! Even people and other RUclipsrs on this platform from my own age demographic would give me sh*t about this opinion and I would NEVER hear the end of it - from Anyone.... And yeah, there would be death threats aplenty most likely.....
