Super Mario World was my favorite 2D Mario game for basically my entire life. I grew up with the GBA ports of the NES and SNES 2D Mario games, and I absolutely love Super Mario World to this day, but Wonder topped it for me personally. It’s so creative with the Wonder Flower events and the levels would still be great if they didn’t have Wonder events
Wonder is arguably the best Mario 2D game of all time but What holds it back for me is the the boss fights..having too fight Bowser JR multiple times just gets tedious.. some worlds don't even have boss fights which is crazy and not a fan of the elephant power up its okay but I can do without it but other then that its amazing
Wonder is for sure my #1 and I’ve played all of these games as they’ve come out my whole life. It is finally the evolution this series has needed for like 30 years.
Still not sure yet if I can say Wonder is better than World, because I keep thinking it might be recency bias, but it's real close. Both are phenomenal games. I've been a huge fan of World since I first played it at a friend's house during Christmas break 1992. Over 30 years of never getting bored with a game is a lot. Wonder will probably age gracefully as well.
I don't see what people like so much about wonder to be honest. It's fine but not significantly better than any of the other new super mario bros games
14: Super Mario Run 13: Super Mario Land 12: New Super Mario Bros. 2 11: Mario Land 2 10: Super Mario Wonder 9: New Super Mario Bros. U 8: New Super Mario Bros. Wii 7: New Super Mario Bros. 6: Super Mario Bros. 5: Super Mario Bros. 2 - Japan 4: New Super Luigi U 3: Super Mario Bros. 2 - USA 2: Super Mario Bros. 3 1: Super Mario World
My ranking: (also I won't rank Wonder because I haven't played it in ages) 11: Lost Levels. Self explanatory. 10: Super Mario Bros. Decent time, but controls are very clunky and the game's levels get far too difficult and tedious near the end for me to enjoy it after the first few worlds. 9: New Super Mario Bros. Wii. It's alright! The multiplayer works decently (though I have only tried 2 player), but the biggest drawback for me is that the large focus on the simultaneous multiplayer makes the levels have tons of breathing room and be very empty throughout most of it. 8: New Super Mario Bros. U. While the main game is a little worse than Wii due to the level designs getting worse at the last quarter of the game, the challenge mode and boost rush modes are JUST good enough for it to edge slightly above Wii. 7: Super Mario Bros. 3. It's a good time on its own and very consistent, but the highs of the game aren't crazy good and the game is pretty overrated in my opinion. 6: Super Mario World. The controls are alright, it looks nice, but my main issue is that the level designs are very flat and basic for the first maybe 3 quarters of the game. 5: Super Mario Land. While it has definitely aged poorly and the controls aren't good, it is definitely playable and is generally a creative, memorable game with some pretty great levels that aren't afraid to experiment. 4: New Super Mario Bros. 2. While the coin gimmick doesn't keep your attention throughout the game, the game is more creative than people give it credit for and the levels are genuinely some of the best in the series. 3: Super Mario Bros. 2. Massively underappreciated, mainly due to it being a Doki Doki Panic reskin. The levels are pretty great and experimental to the game's benefit, it controls nice, and I like the graphics way more than I realistically should. 2: Super Mario Land 2. Fantastic, just amazing. While not perfect and a little rough around the edges, what you have here is a fantastic and creative game with great levels, graphics, and core gameplay. However, the slowdown is just common enough to make me put it under... 1: New Super Mario Bros. Just great. Not flawless in the slightest, but what you have here is a very solid game with great controls, graphics, levels, creativity, and that side content is just brilliant, the minigames are just fantastic.
My list... #16 - Super Mario Run #15 - Super Mario Bros The Lost Levels #14 - Super Mario Land 2 #13 - Super Mario Land #12 - Super Mario Bros #11 - New Super Mario Bros 2 #10 - New Super Luigi U #9 - Super Mario Bros 2 #8 - New Super Mario Bros DS #7 - New Super Mario Bros Wii #6 - New Super Mario Bros U #5 - Super Mario Maker 1 and 2 #4 - Super Mario Bros Wonder #3 - Super Mario World #2 - Super Mario Bros 3 #1 - Yoshi's Island - Super Mario World 2
You put Yoshi Island above Wonder??? Let alone the best Mario 2D game?? Yeah I don't understand that at all it wouldn't even crack my top 10.. Yoshi Island is one of the few 2D Mario Games that has never held my attention I don't see the hype but too each ya zone
@javonbatiste3294 yah. Wonder is good at #4 to me but just didn't make my top 3. Yoshis Island is above World even because the map in World for one thing is all blue, green, or brown. Even Mario U had more color. In World, world 3 and 7 have the same theme...underground. Did they run out of ideas? Yoshis Island has a lot of exploring and has a bit of everything. Mario Wonder and World both are a bit easy and felt unfinished to me. Plus the boss fights in both games suck. And putting Yoshi as the games easy mode in Wonder was a bad move.
At #9 right now. Respect for your opinion, and I think you've made some good arguments so far, man. Still, I must say, for me personally Super Mario Land 1 is way better than the NES original despite similar graphics. I think Land has WAY better music, and way more interesting level design, especially with the changeup in gameplay where Mario can use a submarine and an airplane once. SMB1 on the NES for me actually had rather plain and even repetitive level design (levels 2-2 and 7-2 seem to be identical, actually, along with 2-3 and 7-3), and I think the soundtrack sucks overall (yes, I actually am not at all a fan of the base level 1-1 theme, and the castle track is just flat-out annoying), and bosses were all the same, just with an added obstacle on the bridge each time, or an extra attack from Bowser. The only thing I think Land 1 did worse than SMB1 was the fireball powerup. Land 1's "superball" was generally pretty useless with the way it bounces right in front of you. Respect for what SMB1 did, seemingly having a big hand in making home gaming popular again, but the game itself I think actually kind of sucks.
yeah I agree. SMB1 is iconic but in retrospect it's def not as fun. SMB2 is the shit I will always stan it. As good as SMB3 is I just never connected with it - something about it feels soulless.
I used to think that lost levels had bad design; actually the level design isn’t bad at all, but so many Mario games have the gold standard of level design. The Sequel we got was exponentially better but honestly since most Mario side scrollers top off at about 7/10 difficulty it’s great for the hardcore Mario gamer
It’s also hard to design 52 more levels to a game that had 27 & 5 repeats. There definitely were some well designed Levels; 1-1 1-2 2-1 5-1 5-3 7-1 7-3 8-2 8-3 8-4 World 9 is unique A-1 C-2 D-3 B-4 might be one of the best designed warp zone placement in any Mario game that rewards you for focusing on every detail.

this is sad to place Wonder as number 1, since for many players 2D MArio is about gameplay first, not visuals first. Wonder overwhelms with visuals so pleople overlook it, but its so streamlined and easy that it ruined that for me. World and SMB3 are leagues ahead in terms of gameplay, and I bet that in a few years, when the hype wears off, people will not praise it so highly. Also ditching the timer loses replayability of the game- with limitations comes creativity, and they could easily offer a timed levels fo increased challenge and leave it as a selectable option like in Tropical Freeze. SMB3 also has challenge just how we progress through the map, and how the player handles powerups, which could be lost while traveling on the map just adding extra challenge and thought to it. Wonder ditches all that and just creates a lot of visual noice so that younger players are amazed with visuals, and overlook what is essential. I remember in SMM2 even average levels that has 20-30% success rates were harder than the most challenging levels in Wonder. Wonder completely lacks any challenge exept for a few levels, which still arent too hard. Wonder is not a fair treatment of the franchise.
I always like to play the Japanese Super Mario Bros. USA instead of 2 because it just makes me laugh to see “USA” in the USA colors in a Mario game. Also, Mario 2 is the best 2D Mario game ever made.
I think that s exactly why the lost levels are good, because mario bros is supposed to be difficult and not have that donkeyass easy new mario bros. Hard difficulty of the first one and the lost levels is what makes bros series a good one. Also super mario bros 1 is the no. 1 for me

I just don't think it's the second coming of Christ that people are making it out to be. The talking flowers, little flower-toads, and Prince Florian are all sooooo annoying. The game is pretty much constantly baby mode. I haven't died more than once in a single level, and it definitely lacks challenge. There are only 4 power ups in the game, and they're all pretty niche. The fire flower is just the fire flower, the bubble flower is cool in concept, but because everything is so gimicky, you never really get a chance to creatively use it, and the drill hat is more of a utility to interact with straight forward puzzles relating solely to the ability. The Elephant is awesome, though, and I totally love how it feels and how it's integrated into the game. The co-op feels cheapened in this game compared to previous ones, too. Honestly, if it wasn't for the fun Wonder mechanics, I probably wouldn't even consider this game in my top 7 2D Mario games. Mario 3 still reigns supreme, for me. To be positive, I really like the graphics, and I like how they feel like a modernization of Mario 2 and 3's design. That's really cool!
