As bigger/heavier guy, I like my Mach 5s for flat tempo/track, but on descents they blow through the soft Profly+ foam and slam into the firm EVA below. This is also more likely to happen as the temperature goes up and the Profly+ becomes even softer. So for lighter runners or flats only, they are a fast fun shoe. But for heavier runners in warm climates or descents, I'd recommend something more firm with a more gradual foam transition to the sole.
Really wished they were going to improve outer sole durability. I loved my Mach 4s but they are terrible for shufflers on hard surfaces for durability. I was hoping for a bit of durable grip.
I ran through so much of the outsole in 100 miles on country roads they're only usable for casual wear. Shame; I loved how they fit and ran! FWIW, I'm a relatively light-striking neutral midfoot striker.
Good take! I think the Pro Fly+ midsole on the Mach 5 provides a much more responsive, bouncier ride than the Mach 4. It feels like New Balance's Fuel Cell foam in how it squishes before responding. Overall, it's a stellar daily trainer and, dare I say, a decent plateless option for race day.
@@jbringas9582 Makes sense! I have the RC Elite v2. I'm not sure whether the fuel cell in that and the formula in the Rebel v2 are similar. The Mach 5 feels kind of like a more-stable, lower-stacked, plateless RC Elite v2 - if that helps, lol.
I quite like the long laces, I do a runners knot with a surgical knot and I find that if I want to do it on my pagasus 38s the laces don't quite reach! Where If I do that knot on my mach 4s I have no problem! Plus it uses up a little extra lace for that better lock down
Thanks for the Review . I to prefer max cushion shoes like you so very interested i your comments. Can you say which websites you saw the Mach 4 for under £100. Keep up the great content .
How does this compare to the Rincon 3, which to me, feels like hard as a board. It’s probably the worst feeling shoe I bought last year. I only kept it because the Blazing Orange/Fiesta color combo looked so good. I don’t want to make another Hoka mistake.
Question: I’m trying to get my brother to quit smoking and start runnin.he is naturally drawn to ASICS and I think it’s important that as a newbie you like your shoes.Which ASICS shoe would you recommend for someone new? Money doesn’t matter to him.
So I’m curious, because I use the endorphin speed 2s as my shoe for every run I do. How does this shoe compare to it? Seems to be same price range also.
I have both. The Mach 5 is softer with a similar level of bounciness. I like the Speeds better for tempo and faster workouts but the Mach 5 can do those types of runs too and is better (IMHO) for long runs and easy days. I'd use either for casual racing too. The durability of the foams and outsole in the Mach are, once again, a possible concern. We all know the ES2 will hold up for lots of miles/Kms - can't confidently predict the same for the Mach, sadly.
I found these oddly snug through the mid foot. Not comfortable, almost like I was spilling over the side. Im only 140lbs at 5'11, so I dont have super wide feet or anything. Never tried HOKA's on before this but they come highly recommended, just not for me.
I just got my Mach 5 and I have the same issues as you. Very strange since the Mach 4 fit perfectly for me. I bought another pair of Mach 4 on sale and going to return the Mach 5 now.
I never understood the Mach 4 hype. I took the advice of the shoetubers and bought the shoe. It will probably take some time for me to ever buy another Hoka. It was hugely underwhelming. It was quickly donated to charity.
I tried ON, some Adidas, then I got hooked on HOKA and I never looked back. Went from Gaviota 3 (max cushion, heavy shoe) to Arahi 5 (cushioned, but lighter) and finally to Mach 4, which is working for me the best. I'm 75 kg, slow runner (6 to 6:30 k pace), unfortunately I have the so called "duck feet", which in our language means totally flat feet. I have three Mach 4 in rotation. Can't wait for the Mach 5.
@@dpbg I was surprised how flat the shoes felt. There was little or no return from the midsole...No feeling of rocker or forward propulsion. And my legs felt beat up after each run.
I think he was saying it specifically because the mach 5 might have subpar durability like the mach 4 did. I only got around 250 miles out of my 4s which is pretty pitiful for a daily trainer.
@Bullet I agree that individual factors play a large role in shoe durability, but a lot of people had durability issues with the 4 and I normally get 350+ miles easily out of other daily trainers.

Glad to see they lengthened the laces since I need to use a runners knot with Hoka’s.
Those long laces work great to do the Runners Knot

So does it feel like the Rebel V2? I haven’t found a shoe, let alone a Hoka, that even remotely compares.
@@jbringas9582 I haven't tried the Rebel v2 so I can't say. The ride of the Mach 5 is a lot more fun than the 4 IMO.
@@GuitaristDanH The V2 uses the Fuel Cell foam, so I thought you had some insight regarding this.

@@jbringas9582 less squishy than rv2. Actually a good mix with the squishy foam and EVA lower layer.
Love my M4 and Can’t wait for the M5
I think this shoe is going to be perfect for me. Just got my pair and use it for my October marathon. Is this a good non plated marathon shoe?
mach 4 was a great shoe, but for me the mid-sole just went really flat after 200 miles.

I've seen in another review that the shape of the outsole is wider compared to Mach 4. Did you you compare both models?
Comparison to velocity nitro?
Is it softer / more bouncy / more energy return than the speed 3?

How would these be for an all out 2 mile effort ??

Wait I thought Rincon 3 is relatively plush?
Is more responsive then the Mach 4 or just softer?
Any idea when the uk release is? Thanks

Asics Nimbus 24 or Cumulus 24
Glideride
Cumulus or Nimbus, i agree here
Novablast 2 ,or 3 when it comes out can be used for a lot of runs 👍👍
How does it compare to the Velocity Nitro 2?
So I'm guessing if I didn't like the 4 I'm not going to like this one?
Looks great ‼️ 👍 💪 and one suggestion... You may do review KAMUABU SPORTS... 🇪🇸 Brand.. Colorful like Say Sky...

What is the heel/forefoot height/mm??
these or speed 2s for interval sessions? Not paying 165 for speed 3s
Speed 2s would be our pick

Great upgrades from the 4 soft and plush except Hoka needs to stop wit these paper things tongues to all their new models
It’s not Mack. It’s Mach

Hokas are so clunky
$140 is not "a lot" for a daily anything under $150 is reasonable
