Loved that honesty & passion Ben in this video. I was supposed to be doing Manchester in this October just gone. I'd been training since January 2020 towards a sub 3 attempt and then about 8 weeks beforehand I became a dad a little earlier than expected, I didn't go to Manchester but I'll always remember it fondly as the marathon I missed for the most amazing reasons. By all accounts though, it should be a great marathon to do.
Yes! Manchester! That'll be my first ever marathon. I'm truly stepping into the unknown. I hope to see you there. I start a 15-week training plan I got from your website on the 20th of December! I'm excited. I'm scared. I'm nervous. I'm anxious. I'm hopeful. I'm doubtful. I see-saw between "I can do this" to "I don't think I can do this". There's such a bundle of emotion flowing through me at the minute. But I'm looking forward to the journey. The ups and downs. And the day when I cross the finish line. #gettingitdone. Thanks, Ben. You're an inspiration!
I updated my strava BRAVOVthhats the essence of a runner. Strava means more. Congrats on everything you've achieved and yet still to achieve so much more and always an inspiration.
really enjoyed this video, ben! always find it fascinating to hear about your past. i had an idea that you could make a video going through your personal strava heatmap, with such an archive of activities it would be very interesting and i'm sure you'd have a lot to talk about! as for my fav places to run, anywhere with a view! especially on the coast. good luck training for manchester :D
Thank you for the idea Danny. Telling stories is something I want to do more next year… just not something I think I’m that good at.. but will make more videos about them and get better!
Great sentiments in the intro and something that really resonated with me, running has been a great escape for me over the last 2 years. Mainly just time to myself and getting back into nature, however after completing my first Marathon (Virtual London this year) I got drawn into the trap that many runners do of focusing on times and pushed myself too far with speed work and now I am injured. I haven't been able to run for about a month and I am still a long way away as I even get pain with walking some times, really regret not just sticking to nice and easy miles out in nature. It has meant I can spend some more time on my photography, if you need anything photographed for free in the next few month I am in East London so just drop a message.
Love the video Ben, different from your usual videos and really really good. You both make such good content, you should be really proud.
Love the trip down memory lane, Ben. I often think back to those similar and simpler times.
agreed, apart from the fact im looking back to the eighties !! but understand the sentiment, when you just run without any expectation or over thinking, i did same back in 1982 after moving to college in Southampton, in my first year of running and won a local half in 90 minutes, then became obsessed with times, oh well still enjoyed the journey and all the bumps, love your channel Ben, i found it at the beginning of first lockdown and it lifted my spirits no end, all the best
Thanks for your honesty and authenticity in your opening comments. Inspirational.
Just did five miles in my Mach 4’s, they’re just so comfortable!!!
Awesome stuff Ben! Ironically I'll be running my first marathon in Manchester next year with a target of running a sub 3. Thanks for the tremendous support and motivation; you and Sarah are a great team.
Ditto man. Same venue, same date, same goal. First attempt!
Good luck going for the sub 3 🙌
I love a good crushed gravel trail through the woods. I did a marathon on one of those coming around a mountain last year and it was the most relaxed I have ever been in a race. Happy holidays to you and Sarah and may the new year bring more grand adventures.
Great video Ben and truly inspiring on a special day for me as just learned I’ve been successful in the draw for next years Chicago marathon so a great way to end this year. As for the Mach 4’s I must be the only person who didn’t get on with them!? Super excited to get a pair after all the hype but that soon turned to disappointment when I started running. Found it almost impossible to run in a straight line and felt like I was falling off the edge of the shoe. Tried again twice with them but no better so off they went on eBay. Oh well can’t win them all! Great video Ben 👍
Congratulations on getting into Chicago! 🎉 what an amazing experience that will be next year!
Awesome video Ben.
What you said resonates so well!
I grew up in Dymchurch, but only started running last year. Ive moved to NZ now but this made me wanna run back at home.
Cool that this place was your first Sub 3.
Kudos 😁
Hi Ben, these videos are by far the best kind of youtube videos. thank you for sharing
Yep, Love running on the coast, I live on the North Wales coast with miles of shoreline coastal running on my doorstep. That's the positive, the negative though is the wind ! No such thing as a side wind on our coastline, its a block heady one way and a full on PB Taily the other :)
What a enjoyable video Ben. It's so lovely hearing you speak from the heart about your live and passion for running.
I ran in that marathon and the Sunday event.
You've reminded me: I bought new trainers on Saturday, and wore them on the Sunday(!)
My first marathon was an SVN too, (I live in Kent) Traviss is a legend. Favourite runs are any trail really.
Using Mach 4 for longer steady runs, already got 700+ kilometers. I am satisfied with durability, but it could be better.
Great video Ben :)
Awesome, I’m doing my 1st marathon at Manchester next year. Just about to start my training using one of your programmes, hopefully see you there! Loving the videos 👍
Me too!
And me three!
Got mach 4 for 60$ (early color) , I prefer Rincon 3 because of lighter and softer compared to this
Love the story about Dymchurch marathon!
Your right about the golf course, got 2 rounds booked there over Christmas. Top tier 👌👌👌
Lucky you Thomas! It’s a great track.. good clubhouse as well. Enjoy it!
So nice edit and music matching (Sarah great job! :))
Love the video, great to listen to you sit and talk about that Dymchurch marathon. I also enjoyed the Seth James Demoor style opening and some great footage from Sarah on the new ebike, you can tell the difference!
The SVN events have inspired many a marathon runner. I did one which was 9 laps of mud and hills at Shorne Country park and their Ranscombe challenge is wonderful- I guess I love the trails tbh. Well done Ben and Sarah on another inspirational vlog 👍🏃🏻♂️
I also ran my first sub 3 hour marathon (and first ever marathon) in 2015 in Geneva, Switzerland. That race has a very special place in my heart!
Love my mach 4’s and have done Manchester marathon, great course and atmosphere so i’m sure it will be a great day out.
Great video as always. Just want to say thank you as a I have only been running lest than a year. Over last few months I have struggled with motivation. And found that it has affected my mental health. But having watch your video and hear you talk about how running make you feel and how running by the sea make you feel. I have started to remember way I started running and the way it made me feel. As I only live down the road from dymchurch. As when I run it was involved running along the sea wall. So thank you
My daily run is along the Elbe River in Hamburg and it is beautiful every time of year. But, last summer I was running in the mountains around Lake Tahoe, California. That was beautiful in the mountains on trails along a lake. Also beautiful was running in the Alabama Hills (desert area in California). It was otherworldly, almost like being on an alien planet, but quite an amazing experience. I started running before sunrise, since it got up to 38 celsius during the day time.
Lovely part of the world....and fully agree on Littlestone, terrific place.
Love how Sarah keeps you on track re message 😉
Really enjoyed this video, Ben! Love all the content, but this and the Marathon Threshold video in particular you did seemed really genuine, fun and well put together. Thanks for sharing and keep them coming!
Have you thought about trying or even seen the Xtep 160X PRO running shoes? They seem to be all over my Facebook ads recently, they are their top end running shoes so are expensive at £180 but they do look nice in the black with gold colourway. I've not seen any English speaking RUclips videos of them but did watch one video with an Asian language speaker and the video was comparing them quite a lot to the Nike Alphafly's in look and shape, obviously didn't have the airpods in it but did look quite a squishy midsole. I also seen an article that read: In the 2020 Nanjing Marathon, Peng Jianhua and Yang Shaohui wore a black platform running shoes and ran the first 2:08:50 and second best results of the 2020 men's marathon at 2:08:56 (and the shoes they wore turned out to be the Xtep 160X PRO in the black colourway).
Might well be worth a look for you and the channel.
Manchester marathon !! See you there Ben. It will be my first marathon 🥴 using your beginners plan 💪
The first 5 mins was just pure inspiration. Thanks for the vid. How is the new bike?
Lovely to hear your story. Thanks for sharing! Your joy is infectious
Great to see so many other people doing the Manchester marathon. Looking forward to jumping across the pond and taking part too! Bit daunting with only 16 weeks to go to the starting line 😬
See you there Ben! I really enjoyed it in October, signed up straight away the week after. Look forward to your inspiration during my training.
really enjoyed this type of video
Who doesn't love a trip down memory lane, great video Ben and a wonderful insight into your running life
Great stuff Ben, really cool to see you go back to where it all started. And amazing that goody bag of pub snacks!
Love that Story of your fist sub3 Marathon. Keep it up. Can´t wait for my first standalone Marathon in April in Vienna.
Is there a thing in the GB that people run in shorts all year?😅Its december!!!🤣
Awesome video Ben and Sarah!
Great video Ben, Definitely prefer my trail running but I've just got a new pair of Hoka Carbon X2, so I'll have to get some quick tarmac races in 😀I'll have to do a review of them on my channel at some point!
Running my first half marathon in april and just aiming for steady time of 1hour 40.. just enjoying running alot atm without any pressure of times on myself.. excellent video as always 👍👍
I completed my first marathon/ultra this year and it was an SVN event run by Travis and Rachel 😁 a great group of people involved. Love my Mach 4s 👍
Thanks for sharing that story with us! And oh how I would love the original Nike pegasus turbo to come back! My favourite shoe of all time!
Awesome! See you there 💯
Nice video Ben, thanks for sharing details of your past.
Stay safe and healthy!
Great video ben!!i love my running its become a real passion, the best runs for me are ones that aren't planned just lace up and go..my favourite routes are usually a bi of road and light trails along the canals as well👍🏃♂️
My shoes of the year... yet again...
The Boston 8 (exact same blue/white) 😎
I’m running Manchester marathon too, loosely using one of your training plans to go for 3:30 - see you there!
Great video, always come across as a top guy and your merch is spot on. See you in Manchester!
I think the Hoka speedgoats are amazing for the trails
Great video Ben. Love the trip down memory lane.
Loved the video, loved the talk at the start, if you ever need to talk to anyone give me a shout.
I do like the Rebel V2.
Genuinely inspirational video! Great!
Just ran a marathon on the mach 4 this past weekend. Loved how they felt!
Great stuff, see you in Manchester Ben!
I also loved the Boston, I had 2 pairs of Boston 7 and one of Boston 8. Unfortunately I think that adidas is a bit behind the other brands right now.
On the other hand, and following your advice, I have the new balance Rebel V2 now and I absolutely love them.
Thanks a lot and keep the great work.
Love hearing more of your story Ben! And welcome to the Hoka Mach 4. I love the ride but the outsole durability was really poor for me and midsole durability also just average.
HOKA Mach 4 is easily my road shoe of the year! If I could only run in one shoe, there is no doubt I’m grabbing my Mach 4!
Love Hoka.
A question about DROP :-) thanks for your videos TOP NOTCH!!
My question is: would a drop in drop (🤪)from 10-8mm to about 4-5 mm be a shock to the legs or is that OK
Little background: I am a triathlete
I run about 20-30k/week 5k pb 21:25 hm pb 1:41 10k 47.
I now use:
-Endorphin Speed 1, for speed work and faster paced long runs
-Solar boost 19, Zone 2 easy stuff and tempo.
-vaporfly next, race shoe
Looking to replace my Z2-tempo shoe with a Hoka Bondi 7.
But would that drop of 5mm be to much for me to do a cold switch or do I need to ease into it. If so what do i need to look out for ??
Thanks a bunch🙏🙏
HAHA, you were forgetting to say what the marathon was. That cracked me up! Great vlog.
Love when Sarah pulls you back into line🤣. Nice video as always👏🏻
Can of Carling in the goodie bag 😆
Wise words. Great advice. !! Keep up the great videos
Hi Ben, the original Boston is supposed to come out in a "retro" line and called something like SS21 or similar.
I pray to the running gods that the peg turbo will be back 🙌🏻
Manchester 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 group run before race day? 🙏🏻
Hoping to!
I really enjoyed your video. I took up running for a drunken bet. Try and run a 5k. First time I tried, I thought I was gonna die! Had to stop halfway round, but something inside me, made me keep going. I love running now. I'm down to a sub 17 5k and have run 2 marathons at sub 3 hour. I'm currently trying to decide which shoe to buy? Hoka Clifton 8 or the mach 4? I'm just an average runner but likes to try and up tempo from time to time.
See you @Manchester 🤞🏻 I missed you guys when you were down my way for the R.A.T. I think the Mach4 is a great shoe as a real jack of all trades....it does nothing brilliantly, but everything pretty well!
Templehofer Feld in Berlin, the old airport open to public is amazing to run at👍
Love along the South Shields sea front where great North run ends
Good video Ben, like running on bush trails first then probably by the sea 2nd, road running last, I like the Hoka trail running shoes never tried the road Hoka shoes, ran my last marathon in the New Balance Rebel v2 awesome shoes, will be after the Rebel v3 when they’re out, good luck with Manchester marathon 🥳👍🌲🍀👊🏼✅
Manchester will be my first marathon using your plan at min
Nice one 😃👍 good vid…. Currently training for Mudcrews Arc of Attrition 100 miler end of January 2022…. Lots of coast path and trail running…. Take care and stay safe 🙏👋👍
My favourite runs are always by the sea!
My second pair came in the mail today. Great shoe the Mach 4.
Never bought a 2nd pair of the same shoes before, but the HOKA Mach4 is potentially going to be the 1st. About to hit 500KM, and they are still going strong.
Same color way as my pair but I would have liked something else. Sweet shoe and a sweet ride. One of my absolute favorite daily trainer's of the year. Just had a lady friend do a marathon in them and bust 4 hours without even trying. Classic Hoka all the way. Yup, love my NB Rebel V2's also.
This was a great video.
Great video and fab editing 😁
Amazing sub 3 story! I have a half marathon here in australia the same day as your marathon in manchester. . .goal will be to run about the same pace as you, for half the distance lol.
Great video. Good luck at Manchester Marathon!
The end made me laugh so much😂 my favorite place to run is on the South downs😊
Is that a Soar jacket Ben? Been looking at those for a while.
It is!
Niceeee video! Flat all packed up!
The return of the Turbos would be a nice Xmas present from Nike. Everybody has been looking for the ‘best alternative’ (fast training shoe) from brands other than Nike, but none of them have been as versatile as the Turbos. 🤞🤞🤞.
After cancelling Manchester marathon twice (2020 and 2021) Im really hoping I can race it next year
Mach 4 has been out for 8 months!!! Am I missing something?
Love Mach4!
Done 30 miles in the Mach 4 before selling on EBay, dull lifeless things, really don’t get the hype.
Great story!
Inspiring thanks for sharing
