Even after eating lots of different cuisines, Hawaiian food still ranks as a favorite. Whenever I'm in Hawaii, I'm always happy to dine on luau style foods from the islands.
Here's a quick rundown of the traditional dishes I eat during this video.
The first thing is called poi. Poi is Hawaii's staple dish. It's a thick starchy pudding paste like substance that's slightly fermented so it's a little sour. The paste goes great with lomi salmon or other vegetables.
Chicken long rice, though Chinese in origin, has become one of the popular Hawaiian foods. It's basically just long glass noodles cooked in chicken soup and served with pieces of chicken in it.
Laulau is the next dish on the list. The popular dish can either be made with pork, chicken or sometimes fish and it's wrapped in luau leaves. The leaves and meat cook together into a spectacular flavor.
Lomi lomi salmon is the combination of tomatoes, onions, and raw salmon. The luau dish is common and is really good when eaten alongside a bowl of poi.
Poke is the sushi of the islands. Though it can be made from a variety of fish, the most common is cubes of ahi tuna marinated in soy sauce and sea salt. The tender cubes of fresh fish are wonderful!
Fruit, like Hawaiian pineapple is always great for dessert!
Though traditional Hawaiian food has adapted to the many cultures in Hawaii (now including things like SPAM musubi and chicken katsu), there are still so many uniquely Hawaiian dishes origination from Polynesia.

Thank your for watching and hope you can visit Hawaii soon for these delicious foods!
Great to hear you're liking Hawaiian food more. I ate this home cooked at my relatives house, but I can recommend a place called Alicia's Market in Kalihi (if you search that on my blog Migrationology you'll find it) to get an excellent Hawaiian plate lunch and poke! Enjoy!
Great to hear that, you should definitely have a traditional Hawaiian meal including lau lau, lomi salmon, kalua pig, and poi. Also try local foods like chicken teriyaki, katsu, and spam musubi. Enjoy!
Thanks for watching and hope you can find some Hawaiian food soon!
Great, thanks for watching!
i can't tell you how refreshing this was. it feels like 99% of youtube food videos these days feature hardcore editing with smash cuts every .000003 seconds and the person up in your face screaming every exaggerated line. like damn, i'm just curious about the food i don't need a monster truck show. this felt more like sitting around with a friend while they introduce you to something new. i was curious about poi and local hawaiian food and this video was exactly what I was looking for :)
Thanks for watching man!
Come down to New Zealand where all the polynesian food is: Maori, Tongan, Cook Island, Samoan and Niuean foods, and abit of Hawaiian lol
I started watching your Hawaiian food shows as of this AM. I am Japanese and it just amazes me that Hawaiians adopted and arranged their cuisines from so many different nationalities. I had my first Poke 2 yrs ago and loved it(just like sashimi) I started making Spam Musubi and my half Japanese son loved it. They started to introduce Hawaiian food in Japan a few years ago like Loco Moco and Hekka. Thanks for posting. BTW we live in a NW state.
It was the Plantation era that brought immigrants from Asia (Japan, China, Korea, Philippines) and Europe (Spain, Portugal) to Hawaii to work on the plantations because the Native Hawaiian population had been decimated by disease, so the sugar plantations needed workers. All the different workers from the different ethnic backgrounds would share their food at lunch time and Hawaii's unique melting pot of cuisines was born.
Yum, I want some of that now!
Great to hear that!
Yes, very popular!
Ok, yes, should have done that! Thanks for watching!
It's a lightly fermented paste. So it's like thick pudding and slightly sour.
Yes, lau lau is my favorite too!
Me too!
Going to Hawaii in about 25 days and I can't wait to try the food there! (Food blogger haha) I have loved your videos!
Go to Liliha Bakery and have yourself some coco puffs.
That's a great song. It was released in 1997 by the way. I love that song.
If you want to experience traditional Hawaiian food in Honolulu, there are some must-try dishes. Poi is Hawaii's staple dish - a thick, starchy pudding paste that's slightly fermented and goes well with lomi salmon or other vegetables. Chicken long rice is another popular dish, made with long glass noodles cooked in chicken soup and served with chicken pieces. Laulau is a wrapped dish made with pork, chicken, or fish and cooked in luau leaves for incredible flavor. Lomi lomi salmon is a combination of tomatoes, onions, and raw salmon, while poke is the sushi of the islands, made with ahi tuna cubes marinated in soy sauce and sea salt. For dessert, try fresh Hawaiian pineapple. While Hawaiian food has adapted to many cultures, there are still unique Polynesian dishes to discover.
Hawaii was my second home. I have family on Oahu. You got the food perfectly, in this and the previous video. I think poi taste and looks like Elmer's glue. I love that type of taste, but the taste is not for everyone.
Thank you for going to "Da" (the) Islands" for "Da" food. Mahalo (thank you)
Thanks!
If you don't like poi, try mixing it with some lomi salmon🌺
Yup and add poke too. Yummy!
Mmm! So 'ono
You could try fresh "sweet" poi, as opposed to fermented, "sour" poi.
Hey Luke, I would love to sometime!! Thanks for watching this video!
Ok, thanks!
No haupia? So glad you made this look so ono like everything else you eat🌺
Yeah and since when it long rice Hawaiian lol. And pineapple's South American. Should have some opihi instead, and maybe not haupia but kulolo which is the inspiration for haupia.
The pork in taro leaves from Hawaii has got to be the most famous dish in the whole wide world!!!!!!!!
Thank you!
I've never had that, but sounds good!
i love hawaii food...especially the way they use the pineapple
I actually love poi, but it would taste better if you eat it together with something else both on the same spoon (I like it with kalua pig)
Thanks a lot!
Dude it would be good to drop the "like" because it's confusing me. Thanks- your site rocks.
Lau lau ks so awesome i ate it ones but i can remember the taste it is unique
Would love to try it all!
Thanks a lot for watching!
Hehe, can you find all these Hawaiian dishes where you are?
I miss lau lauuuuuuu, last time I went to Maui was 9 yrs ago!!!
Hey Betty, hope you can soon!
If da poi is sour and tangy it's the best 3 days old... when its fresh it really doesn't have much flavor but it is very healthy food. I'll take that plate lunch any day over a nice Omaha steak. Don't want to be an old cardiac attack later in life. Plus people look at you weird when you eat beef raw. I don't understand since I always ate it that way on the East Coast.
Haha, thanks!
Mark...the ONLY thing you really liked on that plate was the tuna. I can tell. :)
You make it sounds so yummy, I can't freakin wait to visit Hawaii to try the yummy food!!!!! :D
THANKS MARK !!!! it really helpz :)
I've never had it that way, but I'll try it with sugar next time!
yes i love it
I love All of it
Cool video! You should have gotten the squid luau as well. That's one of me favorites!!!
don't be fooled, Poi is an acquired taste. It also taste like artist paste to to me. My 14 year old daughter is crazy about it !
Thanks for watching!

you making me hungry bro.. and homesick...
Please go back to Hawaii and try more food! :)
The î
Another great video!
Wonderful
I love the poi too
My family and i are going to hawaii during winter break. what foods would you recommend i try?
I'm hungry from watching this :D
Thanks for posting. I'm doing a project on Hawaiian food for my Multi-Cultural Food Studies class. Question: Pineapple was brought over to the islands within the last 100 years or so, right? Not actually "Traditional?" Not trying to bust your chops; just want your opinion/info on this, as I need to do a timeline, including which foods are truly original to Hawaii. I think there's a very long/active timeline of new foods being added. Taro/Kalo/Poi were WAY before rice, correct?
Yes, the poi was dries in packets for transport across the sea by canoe, then reconstituted with water. The rice came with the Chinese field workers, and the Japanese, Philipinos, etc. Much later. There is also a poi made from the breadfruit called Ulu Poi.
my wife is from hawaii and we hated hawaiian food for the longest time. it wasn't until recently we decided to eat hawaiian food again on the mainland, california, and are taste buds changed. we are heading to ohau again this dec, where did you get your food?
people are crazy if they don't like Hawaiian grindz. poi is the best with lau lau an kalua pig! mouth is watering just thinking bout it.
mark you look A-M-A-Z-I-N-G with a skin tan!
What is traditional Hawaiian food? You need to clarify what time period you are talking about. For me, the Hawaiian food that I ate, while growing up in the 1940's, was poi, lau lau w/ butterfish, lomi lomi salmon, pipi kaula, limu kohu and sweet round onions. I forsake all others. Hawaiian food can also include raw beef liver, lomi raw fish, chili peppers, raw fish guts, kalua pig, sea urchins, sea weeds, chicken/pork luau, and chicken long rice. Recent addition is poke, which is less bloody than lomi raw fish. I am sure that I have miss a few others. I live in Texas and keep poi in the freezer just for reminiscing.
I did not care for poi, I found it too salty and pasty. The roasted pig I had was some of the best meat I have ever eaten. It is amazing to see their process of preparing the pig in the ground to cook all day.
Hawaiians put a little extra in your poi.... poi isnt salty... LOL
Lau Lau
oh im so hungry:D looks amazing
Nitpicking but only 3 dishes on that plate are traditional Hawaiian: Fish/Squid Poke, Lau Lau and of course poi. Chicken Long rice is actually a Chinese influenced dish that dates to the 19th century. Native Hawaiians didnt have rice or noodles. Also Lomi Salmon is most likely a 19th-20th century dish: There are no salmon in the waters of Hawaii (too warm), Tomato is a New World plant, didnt grow in Hawaii until Western contact, same with the onions. And my biggest gripe: Pineapples, its native to South America and was introduced here in the 19th century to be grown on the Plantations
Hi Mark, where did you get that plate from?
Excuse me! "Wrapped in lau lau leaves"? No way. It's called a lau lau and usually has beef, pork, and butterfish(if you're lucky) wrapped in LUAU leaves (the leaves of the taro plant). Also, the lomi salmon uses salted salmon, not raw. If you're going to review food, do it properly or not at all!
Omg you dont have to respond to every single comment!
nor do you, haole
Robert Newton i havent
Do you kiss your dad at night?
+Darude Sandstorm gfy
Looks good, except for the pineapple (I'm allergic). The salmon salsa looks amazing!
hkfunla... found out, when working at Chili's, their pico de gallo is similar to lomi salmon. All need to do is add cubed salmon to pico, chill, serve & GRIND!-lol...p.s....i would leave in jalapenos, if you like the added "kick."
Is the poi like a paste or is it a fermented paste?
I heard 'Woo&Pep' guide is the best for diet.
mung bean noodles
good video👍💯💖😍
Finally, an honest review. No stupid faces. Thank you.
Pref Ernot rude
Nope. I do enjoy quite a few things! You sound like you like to eat too, right?
u make me hungry bradah :(
Let me help you out here Mark. IMO, poi can only be described as bland and flavorless. It's not supposed to be sour and unfortunately not sweet or salty. It's served at room temperature and honestly, I can't call it pudding because it's got a watery-base and It's not even jello. It's a confusing dish to eat and as well to look at. LOL (wth is it?)
I miss your honest review era... :(
If you think poi will taste good then you are correct unless you don't think it won't taste good then it won't taste good it will taste bad if you think it tasted bad it will taste good if you think it tastes good
you know ... you never know .. you know ...? :D
Man I am hanging for some island food
add some paʻakai/salt and opae/dried shrimps to your poi and you hooked up!
we have that kind of "Poi" here in the Philippines mixed with pieces of jackfuit, tapioca (sago), cubes of sweet potato, slices of cooked banana and evaporated milk! That Chicken long noodle rice is what we called "sotanghon" here. We also have salsa but its mixed with tomato, mango, onions and bits of fish!
Poi to me is like eating glue. Mark yu forgot about the main Hawaiian food MOKO LOCO Or Hawaiian Adobo. even it is a Filipino dish but there is a Hawaiian version
Do you mean Loco Moco? Lol
Madison Ronan OPPS TYPO THANKS
Midala40/ D and A's Food Review it originated in hawaii
I'm from Hawaii
Didn't entirely agree with his descriptions of Lau Lau or the salmon. He was close enough that you get the gist of it. I never have liked poi. But the rest of what he had made me wish for it. Fried rice isn't original fare of HI. Nor is Lumpia, but both of those are super yummy as well.... ...Heads to the kitchen...
thats it thats theee hawaiian food there....
