  • Our next new machine tool for the shop, I took delivery of my Precision Matthews TL-1660 lathe. This is my first brand new lathe and will be the first new lathe I've ever run. After researching across the web for new machines available I settled on the Precision Matthews lathes after seeing several RUclips videos from other owners who were happy with the quality of not only the machines, but the customer service they recieve from Quality Machine Tools. I wanted a new machine with no wear and tear on it, something brand spanking new that I could enjoy running. I believe this will be a great machine for all of the everyday use and basic lathe needs for my work.
Check out the www.precisionm... website to see what all machines and accessories they have available including pricing information.

Adam, might i recommend letting the electrican add a hour meter to the machine and mount it on the side of the electrical panel? that way you can keep track of its actual usage and plan maintenance on actual runtime of the motor. and dont extend the cable for the DRO, just let the electrican hook into the lathe itself. it already has enough power and can just work as a integral part of the lathe. that way it will turn on and off with the lathe itself. an hour meter would also give a lathe more value if you did ever try to sell it if you can show the usage and maintenance logs.

@@thetoecutter13 Not sure how the electrical is set up on this one, but I did this with my lathe too and it's not hooked up to the lathe power switch on the front, but to the cable coming in. Unless you turn off the main switch on the back you can leave the DRO on.
It just looks o much neater and you can walk behind the lathe without having a cord in the way. Easier to clean up too.

Man...don't even get me started on Precision Matthews/Quality Machine Tools! They are without a doubt one of the last companies in modern times that operate fully on the ethics of the past. Good and honest people that stick to their word, truly care about their customers, and provide top notch products (for sure some of the best in the import world), not to mention at a fair price for brand new equipment. My first "non-toy-sized" mill I bought was a PM-835S, I was pretty green to the world of machining and aside from buying things like vehicles and a home, very out of my element spending that much money at one time for something. So obviously anticipation was pretty high, and upon unboxing my new machine it became very apparent that something went wrong during the shipping process. There was a fair amount of damage to the machine and everything covered in splinters from the inside of the crate. My heart sank, as I was yet to really know the type of company I was dealing with. But, after a quick call up to Matt and the team along with some confirmation photos sent, they had a (second) brand new machine getting loaded up to come my way to swap out for the original. Not once did they question/doubt me as the customer or try to convince me to keep the damaged machine and fix it myself (like some "other" companies are known to do). Havn't had any problems with that machine since the replacement showed up a few years ago, besides having to replace a handle that was honestly my fault for abusing, but low and behold they even took good care of me with that in record time, with no additional cost to me. and I promise I'm not some low-key PM rep, just a very satisfied customer trying to give back via my experience to one of the few companies that actually takes care of us. Congrats on the new machine though Adam, I've always heard great things about their lathes.

Congrats Adam for your new machine. Be aware for that ground cable in the readout monitor, if you clamp it to the monitor's arm it won't have a good ground connection as you are using nylon washer in the arm's base. That ground cable should be connected to ground cable in the circuit box (I think it's the green-yellow leftish cable).

CONGRATULATIONS !! A new machine is always exciting
Story from 35 years ago. I was buying a Cincinnati shear at the time. The salesman told of someone down in your neck of the woods buying a new shear. Their very first new piece of equipment. The new owner when he ordered it paid for the special paint job. He was proud of finally buying new. When Cincinnati was assembling it they asked him what color he wanted. He didn't care as long as it was special. The paint department did a very tasteful multi color arrangement. When it was shipped it was going to be sunny the whole way so the trucker didn't tarp it. The new owner knew where it was the whole way just by watching the news.

My suggestion to you wether you want it or not 😁is a practical one
You showed us all the signage on the lathe
As it is a brand spanking new machine it should be easiest now to get a complete set or two of all the signage on the machine and put it away for
*Ron* (later on) years down the track when you have either worn off or mucked up the originals or want to refurbish it you will already have a brand new set of original signage to go on it
Others might be laughing at my suggestion but down the track you will wish you had done it back when.
It will save you hassles down the track if you can find them.

Seems to be based on the English Colchester, some of the most ubiquitous and versatile lathes found in the UK., can’t go wrong with that! I think it’s a good idea to wire DRO directly to the machine since the light probably uses the same voltage and it’s always one less wire to trip over.

When we place factory machines, we always draw the footprint onto the floor and walk around it to confirm if it feels like the right position. I have on several occasions, cut full size templates of the machine and laid them on the ground for the customer to move as they see fit. We have also, placed the templates on sawhorses to elevate them to waist level. You can get a good feel of the spacing and restrictions with little expense, especially if the machine to be placed is not on site, or you are just planning for the future.

For asian machine tools, yes Taiwan is probably number one for somewhat inexpensive and good tools. Japan is the other number one source of tools. I used to be a machinist and life before I retired and I used Taiwan tools and Spanish tools. I purchased a knee type milling machine that was manufactured in Spain and I was able to pick my head for run out (.0002", 2" from the end of the spindle) before it was assembled in Southern California and delivered to my shop. It was the best milling machine tool in my shop. It was able to be set up as a surface grinder; with ways protection. That lathe looks like a very nice tool. Next, time for checking twist and level and runout. Yes, if you lift the Lathe wrong you can ruin it! I'm glad they put instructions on how to lift it; where to lift it.

I'd have your electrician add the 120V outlet to the machine for the DRO so that you can keep the area behind the area completely free, but it might also kill two birds with one stone. There's a very good possibility that placing the outlet on the machine (which will tie the outlet ground to the machine), will effectively tie the ground of the DRO to the machine through the power cord and you won't need to run the separate ground wire from the stud on the back of the DRO readout.
If grounding is important to keep noise out of the sensor signals, relying on the ground path through your electrical panel (separate 240V 3Φ for the lathe and 120V 1Φ for the DRO) may not be free of noise like desired (hence the separate ground terminal on the DRO), and if you only run the ground wire to the mounting arm, I'm worried that with paint and the nylon washers there isn't a guarantee that there will be the low-resistance path to ground that you want. Mounting the 120V outlet to the machine keeps things more organized and may help eliminate noise in the DRO ground.

    • @leftyeh6495
      @leftyeh6495 2 года назад

Everything you said here was backwards.
If you want a clean ground, you need to isolate it. This means a whole separate ground, isolated ground bars in the panels, and an extra ground run to isolated ground rods that are totally separate from the standard ground/bond.

    • @LoganWillmert
      @LoganWillmert 2 года назад

@@leftyeh6495 that's only if the sensors are completely isolated from ground (the lathe body) as well. If they aren't, it's more advantageous to create a solid local ground with a reduced chance of ground loop noise. The whole lathe and DRO system then utilizes a single ground return path from the 480V system instead of having two when including the 120V system.

      I would venture a guess....
      1. Build new home on country property,
2, Move current shop equipment to new shop, or sell part of it,
      3. Set up business in new shop,
      4. Sell current home,
5 Live happily ever after with new shop and equipment. (no reason he has to be limited to current 2 yr. lease)

Adam, Good choice for your new lathe. Matt was a great help when I got my new one, you wont be disappointed. PM has been good to me. I made my own arm extension (height and length) for the DRO readout, as I dont have gorilla arms and dont like leaning over the machine especially that close to the chuck, plus the extra room now on top of the head helps.,
Just a suggestion, on my new PM lathe, 3 weeks after delivery, the start capacitor crapped out....very .very luckily my local electric motor repair shop had on old one (NOS) that was "had been in the back 20+ yrs) so i was up and running in hours....PM attempted to get one, they couldnt find one locally and had to order one fm overseas (warranty)...evidently the electronics technology they use overseas is 10-20 yrs behind is here in the US.......the part arrived within a week direct fm overseas but......I highly suggest checking yours , getting the numbers and specs, and getting a spare just to have on hand....just in case.....either that or swap out motors with the Baldor replacement. FYI
    Don

I bought a PM mill and lathe.
Besides a great value, Taiwan is a free country who is at odds with mainland (communist) China. I don't mind at all sending money to Taiwan (but I try not to support China with my spending... its darn-near impossible, but at least I can reduce it).
The PM mill arrived at my shop just before Christmas and I am really impressed with the workmanship and design. Even though its one of their small mills, some of the surfaces are hand scraped, the table and ways are case hardened (according to another RUclipsr who drilled into the table to mount a limit switch).
Between supply chain issues and Precision Matthew's demand, they're pretty backlogged. I waited 6 months for the mill. A few months ago I ordered the lathe, the last time I contacted PM they thought the lathe should arrive January or February. Fingers crossed!!

Taiwan has been making great quality everything for a long time.
I understand they make Colchester Lathes there now.
The resemblance of your beautiful new machine to the tool room Colchester Triumph 2500VS is uncanny.
Apart from the infinitely adjustable spindle speeds yours is a dead ringer in so many aspects.( I notice because I have a 30 year old Triumph).
The Taiwanese very well may have copied an English mousetrap and made it better, just like the Japanese did with English motor cars and bikes.
You do precision work on old lathes with wear, so having a new machine has the potential to take your work to another level.
You'll be working to tenths on every job!
    Only envious a bit!
    Thanks for sharing.

Really nice lathe. Unfortunately as almost every lathe made for cutting English or metric threads you do have to change the gears under the cover on the end of the lathe.
The ID plates on the end cover show the gear positions and it is also in the owners manual. The really cool part is you can change the gears on the threading dial so that you can engage and disengage the half nut when cutting metric threads. My current and all past lathes I have run or owned when cutting metric you have to leave the half nut engaged and run the lathe in reverse back to the start point. That feature on your lathe is wonderful.
All in all, a very nice piece of equipment. Enjoy!

I just spent my Saturday setting up the VFD and electrics for my brand new PM1340GT. A lot smaller than the 1660, but it's way bigger than the '60s Atlas 12x36 I've had the last decade. Matt's company is top-shelf. They once sent me a free part that I admitted to wrecking for my mill 6-7 years ago.

Beautiful new machine brother!! Keep that rear alley "clean" of cluttery wires and have your sparky provide you a 120VAC outlet for the DRO from the ckt panel on the rear of the machine. You'll want to walk through, push a broom through, etc, and not have to mess with that. The lighting ckt may have 120vac there already.

I always preferred the dro to be easier access , closer to the front panel , so no reaching across. I made an adapter to replace a hex head screw on the cover plate of the head stock as a mounting point. I was a machinist , for 25 years, for the Manitou group, that made the reach truck used to unload your lathe. Although that truck was assembled in Europe ,I was at the Texas division until I retired. The Texas division has since shuttered their facility. Best of luck with the new lathe.

In the picture in the Email announcing the video it looked like a mini lathe. Starting to give Your lady turning lessons?
Watching the delivery, on video, it showed up to be a descent box.
Unboxing.... Once a full trailer load of scrapped pallets was received for free, being used as fire wood for a steam locomotive. Using a circular saw chopping it up worked really well.
So... unboxing.... Adjust the depth of cut for the circular saw, run once around the box, maybe twice, one low and one high cut.....
Good luck with Your new machine! Hope all bearings and similar are well lubricated.

I have a Matheus milling machine. Not a big industrial one but one that will do some small milling jobs. They are a great company to work with. I had a couple small parts break and called and they had them to me within a week. I’m just a knife maker and working with a wobbly drill press isn’t acceptable. The precision of this machine is outstanding. I’m so jealous of your lathe. I hope you have as much fun with your lathe as I have with my mill. God bless
