- Armenian Jazz pianist, Tigran Hamasyan, brings his astonishing talents to KUTX's Studio 1A with a rendition of the traditional folk song of Armenia, "Mother, Where Are You?"
In the Armenian Church, this hymn is sung during midnight mass on Maundy Thursday. It is usually sung solo by a female chorist from behind the altar to create a mystical atmosphere -- l used to be one myself!

I had a chance to be on Tigran live in Odessa, Ukraine. All crowd was silent all way long, trying to get all notes he played. He is a great musician and his song tells more than any songs with lyric. ❤

I'm sure this music does absolutely the same in any Armenian soul around the world, it's something on a DNA level.... But when I read the comments by other nationals, I see that Tigran's music is immensely powerful and universal. I am blessed, I've been twice to his live concerts. Thank you Tigran for who you are and what you bring to this world!

I hear pure Armenian and Komitas. This goes far back from Ravek, Akbeniz ...
Those guys were influenced by the folk music of these regions. Albeniz coming from Spain where the Umayyad caliphate operated giving a huge influence of Arabic musical forms and harmony (also why Latin music incorporates those same ideas as Spanish culture spread into the new world) and Debussy who attempting to find new sounds and textures looked to the 'orient' and found what he was looking for. This stuff is much older than 20th century music. That's the beauty of music, its all one big mish mash of influences. When you get someone like Tigran coming along though and he can combine so many genres together seamlessly it just becomes good music and nothing more. The 21st century is an amazing time to be a music listener as we've never been so privileged to have such amazing genre bending music at our disposal!
