The main point of this game is that it's an alternate universe which was pointed out in the shorts for Portal 2. Cave got put into the computer instead of Caroline. The human DNA was put into mantis' instead of the other way around. The one thing that doesn't outright confirm but shows strong evidence is that Cave taught the turrets to sing as his "data flows out of him" as he put it in his office. This game also reinforces why GLaDoS acts the way she does. They didn't fully upload her brain due to Cave's sudden passing of his disease and running out of time to get a replacement going in the canonical universe that is Portal 1 and 2. Cave in this game got fully uploaded, however, dates are the main thing to pay attention to here.

    • @selinnazsur2328
      @selinnazsur2328 2 года назад +93

Also I think in canon, the Personality Cores weren't supposed to be built until the 90s where GLaDOS started becoming Aperture's main concern (notice the modern Aperture logo on the canon Cores, also GLaDOS was first activated in 1986, went through a few iterations and the Cores were made after all that, kind of as a last resort) but the offices in Desk Job including our desk have the 70s/80s Aperture logo/aesthetic. So that would mean the player and Grady are from an alternate universe where the invention of the Personality Cores happened earlier.

There was a post on the Portal Reddit with an email asking Valve if Desk Job is canon and Erik Wolpaw responded, saying the devs don't really consider the tech demos canon. The two main games are canon. Unfortunately I can't post links because RUclips deletes my comments but it's there. Idk what they might do with these new lore bits if they make Portal 3 though, it's a bit open ended.
But to be honest, Cave being alive and Grady existing in the canon Portal universe would throw things off, it doesn't really fit the games' timeline. In Portal 1 and 2 Cave died before Aperture could create an AI that could host him, and Personality Cores weren't made until after GLaDOS was built, which is around late 80s/early 90s. This game seems like it takes place in Aperture's 70s/early 80s era, judging by their logo and indoor design. However an alternate universe isn't out of the question because Aperture has the Perpetual Testing Initiative. Maybe the tech demos are all alternate Apertures.

@@MiloMurphysLaw not sure what you mean by that because the only thing that the steam deck and the switch sort of have in common is general form factor and that they are portable. That is it. The steam deck is much closer to a computer in performance than a switch, since the switch is literally running the hardware equivalent of a 2015 smart phone. Just to clear the confusion, this is not a dig at the switch, because they have been able to do a lot with that hardware, but if you are actually comparing hardware they are nothing alike. a switch simply could not play a modern ish computer game. period. It doesnt have the capabilities. The switch is also one of the most locked down and unrepairable systems out, and it is also one of the most limited in terms of game choice. Compared to what is the most repairable, least locked down and most multifunctional hand held "console" with a game back log larger than any console that has ever been produced. If all you are looking at is formfactor, than the Switch is just a Wii U clone.

If you max the graphics and frame rate your gonna burn through the battery quick (an option for when you're at home near a plug) or you can set it all to minimum and get several hours (an option for road trips). And if you are tech savvy it even lets you limit processor frequency and turn on and off cores in the APU. As for performance it's bench marks are equal to or higher than an ayo neo pro. The fact that it was grade school, your paper got soaked, and your pigments were weak it denotes you had very cheap supplies which really matters with water colour. I promise if you used acrylics in grade school you would have hated it as well because it would be the cheapest wettest garbage you'd ever use and you'd have the same frustrating experience and reservations. Not trying to convince you to like it just saying that those problems aren't inherent when it comes to water colours, those problems are due to quality of supplies and water colours can be the most beautiful and pigmented paints if you get high end ones.

It’s really about finding that perfect amount of wetness, I do this by dipping the brush in water, wiping any large droplets out of it, then proceeding to wipe it on the color itself. Works every time.
Overall, I prefer not to use watercolor, and use pastel instead, it makes it soooo much easier to fill in a sky with one consistent colour.

The steam deck isn't a rip-off of the switch. Unlike the switch, the steam deck was made with repairability, modification, and software freedom in mind. It's a mid-range gaming PC that's shaped like a switch.

@Nam Gge no? The iconic part of the switch were the joycons, which are nowhere on the steamdeck.... The literal only similarity is that it is a handheld console with a rectangular frame... Oh I dunno, like the WiiU, the Nintendo DS, the PSP, etc.????

There's a community made mod for Portal 2 called Portal Reloaded, where on top of the base mechanics, you also can open a time portal and hop between the timeliness of the two games, while trying to solve the various puzzles. I think it's very well done, and I absolutely loved playing it. I feel like you might like that too, Matpat.

It ultimately doesn't mean much, because this is only a tech demo. The devs said only the main games are canon (I would give link to the Reddit post but YT deletes comments with links). It doesn't align with the canon timeline either. Idk if Matt will do a Portal lore video based on this, I kinda hope he doesn't lmao

To be clear if you lot remember how a typical officespace works here (at least in Upsidedownland that doesn't exist), it is often not of the workers' fault that a mess like that whole warehouse destruction, but rather the EMPLOYER'S fault for letting it happen. That means it's actually more of Grady's fault for letting you pull that stunt than you are.

This was one of the few games I got to play truly blind. So glad that you got to play this fun little game!
And let me say, yes, it did scratch an itch I never knew I had: it revealed the true fate of Cave Johnson. It was heavily implied that he was entirely dead, died from the moon rock poisoning, from his tapes in Portal 2. So, to find out that his robot form was a precursor to GLaDOS, to find out why GLaDOS is so large, to learn the origin of the sentry turret, and to have a Jarate reference, made the game a thoroughly enjoyable experience for me, even with the game being so short.

I'm glad you enjoyed it a lot and I don't want to burst your bubble, but the devs did say the tech demos aren't canon to the original games and their lore. Timeline is inconsistent too. This is likely one of those alternate universes mentioned in Portal 2, one where Cave didn't actually die and Personality Cores were made earlier than they were in Portal 1 and 2 (in canon they weren't around when Aperture had the 70s/80s logo and aesthetic which is in this game).

i feel as though there is no more story to tell when it comes to portal. chell has been released after who knows how long, glados has functioning robot testers and has killed the rest of the human testers, cave is there I guess. all that's left now is the story of half life. and there might be some portal content and mysteries that have gone unanswered, but overall the story is finished. if they do make a portal three, which I don't think they will given how little content is left, it could be about chells new life. that's just how I feel though.

I don't like to send repetitive comments, however I again would like to recommend the game pocket mirror. It's up your alley for the style of games more often played on here, and even though a lot is explained, a lot isn't, so it will keep you thinking about it till the end. There is subtle decisions you make that impact the ending, but I have no idea why, and I know you cannot fix some of the decisions. I'd like to say to save often so you know can find the starting points for when those decisions are made, and change your mind if you want

Fun fact. Almost every full game that was developed from scratch in Valve is intended to show of some cool software trick or new tech. Halflife was Gold Source, Half Life 2 was the Source engine, TF2 was their new matchmaking system, Portal 2 was for Source 2, Halflife 2 Episode 1 for their Steam Pipeline, and Alyx for the Index controls. The only real exceptions were Left 4 Dead 2, and the two Halflife 1 sequels. I'm not including any of the games they bought outright, only published, or otherwise didn't start internally. Point is, Valve usually develops a game when there is something cool to show off. And yeah, original Portal was not initially developed by Valve. Started as Nabtacular Drop, and surprisingly, only lived on because the Orange Box had extra space on the disk.
Valve, the kings of Tech Demos. No surprise they put out a tech demo for the Steam Deck. There is a *really* good chance an Alyx sized game will be made in the not to distant future that is "optimised" for it.
