Closer to the root and having the barrel right over the section of hair will result in more volume and curls that start closer to the scalp. If you struggle with sections, use sections the size of the width of your barrel. You can also pin your curl to your head why it cools to really set the curl.

Please let me recommend using a heat protection product before curling or flat irons. A spray is fast and easy and helps your locks stay healthier.
