    I don’t think we use unpaid fare reports anymore I’ve never been issued one of those booklets so I assume we don’t issue them anymore but great video Anton! It is very frustrating when people who don’t want to pay get on the bus I use the sms system every time someone gets on without paying I don’t confront them as I don’t want to stress myself out with any arguments as you well know driving a bus is stressful as it is. As our controllers say every day don’t confront them just use the sms system and let TFL know of the fare evasion and let them deal with it.

    • @DoubleDeckerAnton
      @DoubleDeckerAnton  2 года назад +5

      Hi Taylor. Yes, I use the sms system myself to let TFL know of fat evasion. I dont have time to fill out an orange fare report slip I just use it occasionally, when I know someone has genuinely lost their wallet or is vulnerable/distressed. I think they are slowly phasing these booklets out from the garages.

    As someone on the Autistic spectrum, it's hard enough to talk to people in the first place, especially a bus driver in their cab, which would make it hard for me to talk to a bus driver to ask him to let me get home if I lost my Oyster or contactless card.
    It doesn't help that in my head I'd think that the driver feels I'd trying it on to blag a free ride rather than being genuine, plus I "don't look" disabled which for those of us with hidden disabilities isn't easy as it is in day to day life.

      1. That would make boarding take forever
      2. It would be expensive and unreliable
      3. Fare evaders would just jump over/crawl under/push through it anyway.
      4. They could just go through the back door
      It already exists on some European tram (I forgot which one or where it is) and its not great.

    Yeah in New York I'm a former MTA bus operator, it used to happen the same way they'll play around with their MetroCard and say oh no it's a wrong card so I wait....I Say too myself okay maybe they had the wrong cards you know. But then when it comes to the realization that they don't have their fare and I have to say sorry I can't let you ride. Then they want to treat you like you're the jerk. I simply say hey I'm doing my job.
    I try to understand where people are coming from, because I remember what it's like to be a passenger before I was a bus operator. I try to be helpful but I don't let people play games with me.
    It also happens when people mainly women who have their children with them they don't want to pay for their children, the age starting point for when children have to pay is 6 years old under 6 is free. They're trying to get 10 and 11 year olds on to the bus without paying.

    I uses buses every day and I get on the buses for free anywhere in England but that's because I've got a Hertfordshire freedom bus pass because I live in Hertfordshire and I use my Hertfordshire freedom bus pass anywhere on buses in England because they work anywhere in England. When I use it on London buses it doesn't work tapping because my bus pass is issued by a different English council so I just show my bus pass to the bus driver.

    People mainly bump train not buses because they took the routemaster buses out of circulation in mainstream london (I'm talking when it comes to east and parts of north.) With regards to bumping train, most ppl who bump are on lower incomes and tfl should let them off IMO seeing as the train fares arent like 10 years ago where it was like 1 quid I believe, its now 2.80 for a zone 1-3 embankment which is quite steep when you add it up over a monthly basis (provided u go on a return trip 5x a day ofc.) Obviously I don't condone bumping train, but if you are on lower incomes something has to be done to cater for them (whether it be discounted or free travel.) But for ppl who just bump out of stinginess I agree with your view on them being selfish, long and lengthy read ik but I just wanted to get a point across 😂😂

    As long as you have to pay you have to pay! No discussion. But I'm afraid we should consider seriously how we can make the public transport for free in the future. It's necessarry to speed public transport up and make it much and much quicker. That means no unneccesarry discussions with the drivers, drivers should focus on the road and not on the tickets for everyone's safety, we should stop maintaining an expensive oystercard system. A faster public transport means that people are encouraged to change from private cars to buses, what means more space in our city's, more space for the emergency services, more jobs for busdrivers, less polution, healthier people is less health care . It asks for a total change of mindset. In total the financial effect in health is so big that you don't have to increase taxes Not a easy thing but I'm afraid a really necessarry one.

    It happened to me daily. I almost quit over it because some young mum then took my photo and posted it on Facebook with accusations that I swore at her etc. Then it was going viral and accusations were coming left right and centre including death threats. Then someone posted my full name (because I'm not on Facebook). The worst thing was that the assistant op manager then went to her house and apologized to her 😳 wtf!!! The company got it taken off Facebook the following day but not before I got the police involved. They didn't seem to care. I was then told if someone doesn't pay let them travel, if they refuse to pay let them travel, if they are abusive let them travel, if they are in their 20's yet ask for a child's fare give them a child's fare.(on a few occasions for genuine people usually over 55yr old I done that to help them) And on 2 of the routes most wouldn't pay for their children.

    in jan this year .I was on a bus near kensington. It was 5 pm so dark .Cold /wet and a young school kid who was freezing came on the bus and told the driver he had lost his wallet or it had been stolen at school .And he needed to get home as it was late and too far to walk and he would not know the way home etc etc .The driver was rude and told the kid to get off . Now the Drivers are controlled by the regulations in their "RED BOOK" .And it clearly states that anyone in distress etc must be allowed to travel . The driver was informed by 3 adults that the child is legally allowed on the bus and told the kid to come on and sit down. The driver said "Ok ...Bus not moving until you all get off" . A few people told the kid to get off .They got told to shut the fuck up as this is white mans country and they should respect the laws and customs etc . And the driver was then faced with 98 % of passengers refusing to budge .he then made shit up and asked for the police to attend .They did . The female officer spoke to him in a manner you might not expect .And we all carried on the journey with the black driver looking very sheepish !! The laws are there .many bus drivers are just cunts

      It winds up bus drivers too but there is very little you can do about it sadly. You can't leave vunerable people behind so anyone under 18, a woman when its dark, someone with a disability and plenty of disabilites cannot be seen, also people can just lie and say you were being rude and abusive etc and stitch you up so refusing travel is just not something we have the power to truly do because it can cause a giant problem for us. Then there are those who will respond by giving us a load of abuse, violence and stealing our cash tray and vandalising the bus. Its just not worth dealing with for a couple quid and management will tell drivers the same.

    Free travel on buses is like shoplifting. A bus is a PSV not a private car. My gran was a conductor who couldn't drive a car let alone a bus many years ago for one particular NBC operator when buses had front engines with the driver alone in the cab. She got into trouble a few times for letting a few people on free mainly scruffy nasty louts.

    'Fare Evasion' is up on the increase here in London. TFL is losing alot of money and people forget how does the buses are being maintained, how TFL make a reveune.
    From my experince I have been in this situation and it is horrible to deal with those passangers who doesn't want to pay, but they have food in their hand and so forth, but I must be careful and don't judge. But paying your fare does help your route to continue to run for a good service. If no one pays for their fare, then buses will disappear and won't run.

    In all honesty, Kids between 11 - 15 are the freaking worst. You pull into a bus stop and half the kids don't have their cards? Give me a break.
    I mean, I've seen sometimes when the driver's running late and there's about a full class or two worth of kids at the stop they just motion their hand towards them as a sign to say "I'm late, just get on".
    Honest question: If 25 in 50 kids aged 11 - 15 who take the bus to school every day don't have an Oyster or are waiting for a replacement to arrive, why on earth do TFL require you to touch in on the 600 - 699 routes? It's not like they generate any profit cause their school buses and ZIP Oysters don't get charged for buses. The only one where the "no profit generation" doesn't apply is the 607 as it's not a school bus, instead one of few Limited Stop buses in London (Why's it got a 6 at the front then? Oh wait, the trollybus that ran over the same roads with the same number)
    It's all a bit silly really.
    I have a friend though, He lost his Oyster card but very recently found it, Yet, he still continues not only to dodge the fare but also just straight up LIE about his age. He's 14 and cause of his height he'll be with a friend, tell a bus driver he's 10 (or sometimes if he's feeling super cheeky, 9), and with no way to prove otherwise the drivers let him on. If only I had Instagram i'd upload a picture with some info so you can keep an eye out for him Anton. But, oh well.

    Hi my friend. I am from Ontario, Canada. I am also blind. On most bus routes in Canada, if I have what we call a CNIB Which stands for Canadian national Institute for the blind card, blind people can ride the bus for free. I mean some cities, give you a discount. But now it’s standard across-the-board to not charge a fair. Does London buses or any other bus systems that you know do this as well? Now maybe you’ve already done a video about it. But if you didn’t, do you think you could do a video of some of the safety announcements that you would hear if there are any? And also demonstrating some of the other sounds that the bus might make for those people who are blind and want to know what each of those sound mean. On the North American buses. Stop request Belle sounds a lot different than yours. Also if somebody presses the wheelchair stop request bell it dings two times. Telling the driver that the ramp will need to be lowered at the next stop as well. Something to point out.
    Love your channel by the way.

    • @kits411UK
      @kits411UK Год назад

      It depends on whether you get on a newer bus or an older one. I remember some actually reading out each stop and others were you could tell the driver which stop you wanted to get off at and they would tell you when it's yours.
      The disabled bell (usually at wheelchair height sounds very different to the usual next stop bell and a special light on the driver's dashboard lights up to let them know the next stop is where a disabled passenger wants to disembark.
      There is also an app called Wayfindr which uses audio direction prompts on a phone to tell you where to go, making it much more independent to travel on the Underground as well.
      Not sure about visitors to London specifically, but residents can get free bus and Tube travel by applying for a Freedom card if they have a disability.
      Here in the West Midlands, it's free for blind people between 9:30am and 11pm 7 days a week. I know that a card issued by the RNIB (The UK version of CNIB) is national, so I don't see why a CNIB card would be any different. If I in doubt, contact the RNIB or TFL online with the query. They will be able to tell you what is and isn't valid. If you have a carer with you, they will need to pay their own fare though. That much I do know for certain.

    When training to drive a bus I was told I'd be able to spot fare dodgers as I approach the bus stop due to their shifty nature. I thought this was a joke but in service I found this to be true. Got very accurate at this! Shame people think they are special are don't have to pay. I had people that begged at the road side all day that still paid to get on the bus, yet people wearing flashy trainers with expensive phones think they don't have to pay!

      The issue is you get no support from your depot, the authorities or anyone when it comes to dealing with this. You tell them they can't travel and you open a massive can of worms and make your own life very difficult so you just have to let it go. If they would protect the driver and give them the power to tell fare dodgers no then it wouldn't happen but society is too soft for that kind of stuff at the moment.

    I prefer to walk instead of getting a bus. The reason is when I was 13 and used a bus I asked for half fare. I was entitled to half fare as only those aged 14 and over paid full fare. Every time I got on the bus when I was 13 the bus conductor started arguing with me telling me I need to pay full fare as I'm obviously over 13. I was probably quite tall. Sometimes they would stand with me the whole journey arguing with me. A friend of mine when he was 13 and tried to pay half fare had the police called on him. These traumatic experiences have led me to avoid travelling by bus my whole adult life - I'm in my 60s now. Bus staff can act in terrible ways to bus passengers, don't forget that, as I well know.

    Hi Anton, ive been a driver in the West Midlands for 5 years now i work the Nat Ex West Mids and fare dodging around there is a nightmare everyday without fail someone gets on with a fake, out of date or just walk on the bus. We have a similar system to oyster called swift card and this works the same top up and buy your specific ticket on the bus or buy weeky and monthly tickets via the kiosk at bus stations or online. Anyway as a driver the company tells us to avoid confilict with passengers and press the Fraud/Anomaly button on our ticket machine which will build data up and give the revenue team an idea on where to board to check tickets. Very frustrating at times as before i was a driver i always paid my fare as do my family still now and i find its got worse over the last 3 years with the introductory of Mobile tickets however the company now make you scan the QR code on the screen and the machine will beep it still doesnt stop those trying to pull fast ones though. What if they never paid the unpaid fare notice later on, can the bus company chase them?

    • @kits411UK
      @kits411UK Год назад

      Some of that is covered in Channel 5's "Fare Dodgers: At War With the Law".
      The penalty is only about £80 but they have 21 days to pay it and/or appeal it. If they don't want to accept it or give their correct details for the penalty ticket to be issued, they can be arrested by the police and it's sorted out by them.
      If they don't pay it, Transport for London (TFL) can take them to court for the cost of the penalty ticket, the fare they skipped out on and any other related costs (such as court costs). It's usually easier to just accept it and pay the £80 fine in the time they give than to argue it.

    True story: Late night at the bus stop, waiting for bus number XXX. A young woman is also waiting for another bus (let's call it YY), which actually turns up a few mins later, before mine. I can see she is distressed as has no means to pay. It's cold and dark. I quickly sense what is happening, so I get on YY, tap my card in, the driver then lets her in, I get off instantly, she thanks me with a few kind gestures as the bus is leaving, everyone is happy. Happy days. Now, here is the interesting part: Me tapping in my card, cost me NOTHING, because I had reached my cap long before then. So the bus company DIDN'T GAIN ANYTHING money wise from that journey, anyway! So what's the difference between letting someone on the bus without paying, and accepting a passenger who tapped in and isn't charged cos the cap is reached? Answer: There is no difference! It's all a little bit hypocritical. Some bus drivers need to cool down a bit. They are drivers, not policemen. It shouldn't be down to them to police who is paying and who isn't.

We can issue unpaid fares notices but that's at our discretion and personally I never do these as people try and abuse them. If they ask for one, they just get told to get off at the next stop as that's an indication to us that they're trying to fare evade. The only times where I allow discretion is if its a mobile ticket and they show me that their mobile is actually dead by holding the power button down, or if they come and find me straight away and explain their situation to me (as well as vulnerables, distressed people as you've outlined etc).
