  • Doom has always been a bit controversial within the Christian community with its large amount of violence and imagery. But is it truly wrong to play a game where you are fighting the forces of Hell?

This really is a great video! I think it’s my favorite video that you’ve made. I think the only problem I have with it is that I’m not 100% convinced that Catholics should engage in these games on the basis of actual catholic doctrines or moral principles. You give us your private intuition, that the game is A-ok, because the protagonist is a hero fighting in OPPOSITION to evil, but I don’t think that’s what the title of the video implies we’re going to get. What does the magesterium of the Church say about violence in media and videogames in particular? I’m personally not sure.
I am, however, aware that once upon a time the Church explicitly forbade the viewing or participation in specific media under the penalty of mortal sin. Just as the Church once kept an index of banned literature, the Church until relatively recently had a list of condemned movies that was created by the Legion of Decency. I think for this video to be satisfying, as a video about what Catholics should or shouldn’t do, that you would need to at least address the issue of banned media by the church.....at least the local Church in the United States.
I like the game Doom alright. I was at just the right age to play it when it first launched in the 90s.....I appreciate it for what it was. At the same time I think the vision it portrays of heroism, hell, and “spiritual warfare” is perverse and alien to Catholic theology and moral teachings. It’s not by force of arms, or violence, that Christ is victorious over evil.....that’s not the battle Christ is waging. Thus, it distorts the nature of our struggle with evil in a way that’s not authentic or meaningful from the Christian perspective.
Obviously, that’s not the games intention. The game just needed a narrative framework to make superficial sense of the violence it contains. What more convenient antagonist is there than the devil and demons, etc?
But again, should Catholics play this game? Any game? It’s an open question I think. I think its a question that depends upon a lot of possible factors….and I think that because I think moral action is always qualified by the intentions of the acting agent, and that in turn is qualified by specific conditions and circumstances.

Don't you not like fortnite? Is it because of Catholicism or because of something else?

As far as I know there isn't anything wrong with Fortnite when it comes to Catholicism. However, I can safely say I just really don't like Fortnite. But that just has to do with preference.

If it is okay to play Doom, then is it okay to Draw inverted pentagrams for money? By playing this game you are giving the developers money and rewarding them for drawing pentagrams. Would you draw a pentagram if someone offered you money?
That is my main problem with Doom. Then I also bring up that Doom says that you can face demons/sin on your own, and that you don't need Jesus. This too is very dangerous.

It’s a spiritual battle metaphor. Plus, 1. Pentagrams in mathematics are not bad
      2. If their your enemy, I see no problem. The crucible sword that delivers the final blow is the sword of the spirit, the word of God. It’s saying “hack and slash all you want, but in the end you still need God.”

"Then I also bring up that Doom says that you can face demons/sin on your own, and that you don't need Jesus. This too is very dangerous."
How twisted the original message of millennia ago has become. What once was a solace is now a burden. Man is no longer allowed to be capable or confident in himself, forever subservient to symbology and suffering in his perceived inadequacy. And that's supposed to pass for spiritual maturity.
Christ is there FOR YOU. You're not there FOR HIM. If you do not need him, then you're fine. And it is completely possible not to as evidenced by those outside of the faith that are morally thriving more than those in it.
