COME ON IN :) Check out the front entry of our cabin in the woods :) We finished it! Feels so so good walking up to this. It was yet another busy week (of course lol) we decided to well demo our home.....for good reason of course- & it’s worse than we thought… as we continue to renovate and build our own home in the woods we finally make it down to the studs as we rip out the OSB and insulation. Was it ever worth it because it was A LOT worse than we thought. This was one big step in the right direction in making this off grid cabin home!

Our Journey! How did we get here?
In the winter of 2019 we moved in to our self built van full time to begin living, working and travelling Canada. We quickly fell in love with chasing our dreams of adventuring off the beaten path, living off grid and being self sustaining. We drove our van thousands of miles through various countries-Canada, USA, Mexico & Guatemala. All of which we documented here on our channel, be sure to check that out! After many years on the open road we found ourselves 15 acres of remote woods on the East Coast of Canada where we are building a homestead and renovating our fully off the grid cabin. We are diving into this chapter of our lives in no experience, we're so happy we can bring you all along as we learn to do it all with our own two hands. Thank you for being here with us for cabin life, van life and all the in between!

We can’t believe we’re all the way back to the studs!!! It was soooo much worse than we thought and we’re so glad we didn’t just leave it. We’re slowly getting all the icky out!!!! I suggest that you look into "Solatube" or something like it. They bring natural daylight in where you don't have a window. I don't know if you have a need for one, but I think they are really cool. My dad had one in a hallway in his house and it made it feel so much more open and comfortable in what would have been a dark and gloomy place. I hope you continue to have fun 💕

Be aware that using steel wool has a problem with rust and eventually rust or corrosion dripping from the ceiling and down the walls and onto floors and foundation. Stainless steel wool might be worth researching. There are 150 grades of stainless steel though and some grades are more prone to rust and corrosion particularly in high humidity or high salinity environments. I did some looking around and found that insulations made from hemp are touted as a natural rodent repellent. Check out cellulose... hope this helps
Cellulose is made of recycled materials. It depletes the giant piles of newspaper thrown away every day. This helps reduce our carbon footprint.
The R-value of cellulose is better than most other insulations. R-value is the amount of an insulating material needed to keep hot or cool air. The higher the better.
It’s better for your health. Cellulose does not contain any fiberglass like other common insulations. Fiberglass has the risk of cancer, irritation and rash.
Cellulose is generally cheaper than many other options. It can save you up to 25% more money compared to some of the standard insulations. Blown cellulose easily fills in cracks and crevices to provide a seamless barrier.
There are less risk of fires, mold and insects. Cellulose is treated with boric acid that works to repel dangers and pests.
In the long-term, cellulose R-value decreases slower than other insulations. It has an acrylic binder that makes sure it settles when installed.

I agree but Vanwives forgot an issue with there boardwalk. One wood rot when wet all the time. by have the wood laying on the ground like that it will absorb the any moisture. Also key thing in Canada is think about drainage so you don't pools of water from the rain or pile of snows ( ie from shoveling the boardwalk to the get in the cabin). I love it and i think it great idea , just think you guys missed something to it last longer for you. See you Sunday!!!

..Would have someone professional where you buy your cabinets help design your kitchen, it will pay dividends in the long run..
also use PEX for as much plumbing as you can, and you guys could do that yourselves too! Use the stainless cinches! One tool fits most every diameter pipe you will use, and it will withstand freezing, just in case!! Go get um girls..

We live in the woods too! Just planted 40 perennials that deer do not like to eat. Hydrangea, peonies, swamp milkweed are plants that deer will avoid. Deer love hosts so better to avoid them if you can. For the varieties that you aren’t sure certain the deer will avoid try drizzling blood meal around the plant. You have to do that often as it is a natural fertilizer that will be dissolved when it rains. I also ring all the plants or fill the entire space with natural cedar mulch about 3-4 deep when freshly spread. FYI - our 2 Nova Scotia Duck Tollers won’t run in or on the mulch but they will sniff it if you use blood meal!

Hello, DIY Tip... use three 3 saw horses when using a cutting track. You get greater stability of your work with three bearing points, and if you are cross cutting plywood it will help support the cut off segement. If you're going to do finish work (which you probably will) a Bosch track saw will give you excellent cuts and is easier to store than a table saw. Keep up the good work.

If you haven't bought it already, I would suggest using mineral wool insulation. Critters and bugs can't chew through stone, which is what they use to make mineral wool. It also dries out quickly if it ever gets wet, doesn't hold onto moisture. It's also fire-resistant. Good luck!

Thanks for explaining why you're demolishing the interior walls so you can put proper insulation in for Canadian winter. That dance sequence was fun! It is really amazing the work that you two accomplish!

Congratulations on all your hard work ! The board walk is really cool 😎 ! Looking forward to seeing you redo the inside ! Have a great week ahead ! For rodent control place containers of baking soda and corn muffin mix , this is safe for you and Izzy and Bella. This will kill the mice/rats. For skunk's soak tennis balls in amonia for 24hrs , place where needed and renew when needed. Hope this helps !

Also, baking soda isn’t non-toxic go dogs if they get into it and eat enough of it. Anyway, please reconsider torturing and killing innocent, sentient beings and using humans traps and repellent instead. They don’t deserve torture and murder simply for existing in their environment and trying to survive just as we do as humans.👁🌱✊🏻

Your walk curve: a topical method would be to lay it out, screw it down. And then cut the final board length/ curve ends in place. Of course full length tapered boards would be cut before placement.

  • @berrymand71
    @berrymand71 2 года назад

FYI... there is less waste if you draw a line 1 inch from opposite edges diagonally across the board. Then you end up with two usable pieces with each piece being 1 inch at one end and 3 (or 5) inches at the other end.

.... your ambition is infectious ... your joy is awesome to see .... the hands on skills will grow in time and be priceless for life long projects .... take care of the tools and equipment and they should last a very long time .. (maybe get a table saw for the rips ,, even the miter cuts ,,done with a jig ,, ... I know you two know how to jig !! ) ... Boxes can be a pets best toy ...
.... Seeds ?? ... probably mouse poop .. The work never ends ,, but going into it with such a positive attitude and looking forward to the finished project is rewarding ... and Yes ,, some things are worth calling in the Pros .....

We’ve just had “No mow May” in order to encourage the meadow flowers that support a lot of moths and butterflies etc Apparently it’s a really “eco” thing to do and you can mow interesting paths through the long grasses to add interest. I saw a spiral in one lawn and a labyrinth in another. Anyway, a thought for another time!

Great ending! Yay safety for beloved elders. You two amaze me with what you tackle; that boardwalk construction with all of its adjustments is a great life lesson. “Measure twice, cut once”, rinse and repeat. Isn’t demolishing satisfying? Your vision keeps you going. Cute dances, music, box chewing etc keeps a nice pace. Have a great week! See you next time.

From another cabin owner....critters eat spray foam like candies on Halloween. Seal all the openings up properly with construction materials or steel mesh/screen and rely on the spray foam for insulation, it's intended purpose.

To help you with future work get a Plunge Saw “it’s similar to a circular saw” but make sure it matches your saw track.
It will be a lot quicker and better than a jigsaw. Keep up the good work👍
