We didn't have an actual dishwaster until 1975 when I was 14 years old! I was always taught that you MUST scrape the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher because it could plug it up -- granted, these were 1970's dishwashers and not nearly as techno-sound as the one's we have today. But that has always stuck with me. Now, in my "old age" (57) we have a state of the art, stainless tub LG dishwasher and I STILL scrape or rinse before I put anything in -- even if it's just something stupid like crumbs from a bowl of potatoe chips! It's just a good practice for various reasons, in my opinion :-)
I was a rinse first for years until I got a new dishwasher a year ago and the user manual says clearly to just scrape off the large foodstuff and not to rinse. I don't know if the technology has gotten better over the years but as long as I clean the filter every few months, I have no smell at all. Happy about it, I'm no longer wasting water and time rinsing beforehand 👍🏻
Do you need to run it right away then? I wash everything and store it in there until the end of the day to run so we can conserve water. Mine is brand new, too, so I might give this a chance just to see what happens lol Live dangerously!
@@modelsupplies Nope, no need to run it right away. I run mine only when it's full, usually every day or two. There's only two of us at home so not that many dishes per say but I do put the pots and pans in too. Summertime there's less cooking so it can be 3-4 days before I run it. I keep the door closed, so no smell in the kitchen and everything comes out clean!
I never pre-wash our dishes, because I believe the purpose of dishwasher is to wash dishes. I am very glad that you have changed your way of using your dishwasher. Don't really understand why some people's dishwasher smell though... mine has always been fine 👌
I did a cross stitch sampler years ago that said "My house is clean enough to be healthy and dirty enough to be happy" I think this is perfect advice for young mothers to follow. :)
I am beyond thankful I found your channel! After finding it this past weekend, which inspired me to go to town on my bathtub/shower, I have binge watched your videos & became super inspired to make my own cleaners (which work SO WELL!!! Omg!) , tidy/reorganize, deep clean, & now I’m making my house smell AMAZING with essential oils, tea & citrus on the stove. Thank you SO MUCH, I notice a difference in my cleaning, my husband notices it & our home feels so much more relaxing & inviting. You guys are home cleaning rockstars! Thank you!!
Always rinse the dishes down the garbage disposal side of the sink before you put the dishes in the dishwasher. For anything that cannot go in the dishwasher you wash that immediately, dry it & put it away, immediately. That's what Mom said, she always wash dishes as she went along while she was cooking & cleaning the kitchen while food was on the stove or in the oven that way when cooking was finished it did not take as long to get things cleaned. BTW, she had a husband & five children who cleared away the dishes & clean that kitchen afterwards. She was smart.❤ 😎

Great tips- making sure your dishes are put away in the AM is a great tip - I feel like that is a routine I can try to do before work. My husband and I now rinse the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher because we used to rent and didnt care but the dishwasher stays cleaner when you rinse first.
Wow luv the way you make things going easy round the house and make it clean, start following you a year ago and thanks a lot for making me to look my home better n cleaner
Hi Melissa, we have a countertop dishwasher but i would love to have a built-in dishwasher, unfortunatly, we live in an appartment building, so no house or so... I heard on TV once, not long lime ago, that we are not suppose to rinse the dishes before puting in the dishwasher, according to the manufacturers of dishwashers, but wash and rinse the filter inside of it after each use.! Anyway, that was a great idea and video and hope you have a nice day !!!
Just a little tip from someone who has been in the kitchen and using kitchen appliances for 46 years. Our dishwasher is over 25 years old. I think the reason it is in such good shape is I rinse the dishes BEFORE I put them in the dishwasher to be washed and sanitized. Some people put crumbs and food caked dishes in. I think this ages your appliance too soon. We clean the coils of the refrig and m/wave and keep stove eyes and oven clean. It does make a difference. TFS
I don't own a dishwasher but when I did I did not wash them first. Might as well just hand wash them. Also if we got an order I would put vinegar in with the next load. Actually, I used it a lot to help with getting my glasses clean.
I have always looked at our granite countertops at eye level & make sure no one is watching me as I feel crazy! 🤪 Routine is key otherwise it can get overwhelming. Every night, countertops are de-cluttered & wiped, cabinets checked & wiped, sink cleaned, garbage goes out. Such a good feeling when you wake up & your kitchen is spotless! Also, def rinse & scrub everything before it goes into the dishwasher!
That kitchen scene with the Chipotle leftovers was super funny!! I love how y'all add humor to your cleaning videos. As for dish washers,, Rinse first!!😊
Heyhey....love ur bin idea...and yes with dishes...even though I hand wash them i make sure to rinse all before i applied soap to it...by doing that my sponge stays clean and the soap liquid mixture bowl dont get any food particles in it.... thank u so much u and chad are always inspiring...
Another great video..... thank you. Dishwasher debate....... I scrape off all excess food into the trash..... but then dishes go straight into the dishwasher... no rinsing or washing. I do agree.... if you leave very much food on the dishes... it does stink up the machine! Great idea about spraying the trash can with vinegar!
I’m lucky, in that he and I are on the same page with dishes. Wash them first. It ele I eliminates orders, keeps bacteria from growing on the dishes, and it’s also easier on your dishwasher. You’ll get longer life out of it. We have two separate brushes. One for dishes that are prewashed, and then put in the dishwasher and one for the hand wash items (mostly pans.) Both brushes are regularly cleaned (or replaced), but that way there is still always one that is less used and cleaner, for items that are hand washed and won’t be sanitized in the dishwasher. (Ha, this is what happens when you’re with a microbiologist/food chemist, who knows way too much about germs. 😆)
Meredith Rockafellow....I sure agree with you! How can someone stand to have that food waste left in their machine? What in the world could someone want to be cleaner than their dish washing procedure?
I have a tip for those that want to get your house clean but are overwhelmed. This helped me. Set two goals a day... One large one small. The large one is if you wake up and feel like doing stuff. The small is if you wake up and don't feel very cleaning. Big or small you have made an accomplishment.
Nooo rinse, why to have a dishwasher then? Ad some washing liquid and wash it rightaway.I have been using a dishwasher for 14 years and it hasn not smelled yet😉
Because my plumber once said...the garbage disposals were made for food waste and yes, even some dishwashers too, but pipes were not! They will eventually clog beyond mr. plumbers help.
I have always rinsed off dishes and not because the dishwasher can't clean it, but the smell issue as you mentioned. I have converted my a family member and friend on this with the argument always being the smell!
I broke my dishwasher trying to clean the smell and food particles from where I did NOT rinse my dishes. After replacing my dishwasher, nothing goes in with food left on it.
Even as a very young child it was drilled into me tbgg at i had to clean up after myself. As soon as i was tall enough to reach the dials mother was teaching to do laundry, etc. If she had ever found dirty dishes in my bedroom it would have been a very bad situation. As an adult i had roommates that did this sort of thing a lot and yes it made me very resentful.
Today's dishwashers have built-in sensors to detect how dirty the dishes are, so the only thing one needs to do is scrape the dishes before placing them in the dishwasher. Being a person who previously always rinsed the dishes first, I have found that scraping the dishes has made a noticeable difference in how clean the end results are. It's made a believer out of me!
I clean off my dishes before I put them in the dishwasher !!! How do clean the dishwasher out once a month N what do you use ??? Great video thanks for sharing !!!
Washing the dishes before putting them on the dishwasher seems a bit off-purpose... The main purpose of my dishwasher is to save WATER and TIME by washing it automaticaly. The dishwashers should to an empty cycle once in a while to clean itself and get rid of the smell... if your dishes are staying at the DW for too long, maybe try the ECO program of the machine, if yours have it. Love you guys.
I’m envious of your huge kitchen! Mine is dull, dark and I have few cabinets. The countertops are always cluttered. And, yes, I always rinse the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher.
I personally clean my dishes as if they weren't even going into the dishwasher, and then run the dishwasher as normal on the sanitizer mode! My husband thinks I'm crazy and I'm washing the dishes twice!!! But I don't care cuz that MUST be the cleanest part of my house is my dishes.
Great question Melissa! I always rinse my dishes.😏 to And I go one step further when it comes to my silverware. I run a pipping hot sink of soapy water and let them soak for 10 to 15 minutes. This ensures that anything that is stuck or tangled lets say in the fork tines comes loose and rinses away. Therefore I never have to worry about rewashing the silverware. I also keep lemons on hand for water and they never go to waste. I always, every couple of days or more if needed throw a sliced up half of lemon in the garbage disposal and turn it on. It makes the disposal smell nice and the oil from the lemons radiates through the room. No stinky smells, just lovely ones. 🤗 God bless ❤ XOXO
SCRAPE AND RINSE!!! It's imperative! We don't run the dishwasher daily and there's lots of critters and creepy crawlies in Florida, too, so not scraping and rinsing invites more than just a bad odor. Dishwashers have a trap which need to be cleaned out and scrubbed routinely!
i wipe the dishes with waterever napkin that's left or w a little water, but yes, leftovers go to the garbige not to the dishwasher, otherwise you will have to clean your dishwasher once a week... very useful info, thank you! love your channel.
Omg ew I definitely rinse my dishes before they go in the dishwasher! I don't want the filter clogging up with *gag* And the dishwasher does such a better job!
To Rinse Or Not to Rinse: I agree with you Melissa. However, I wash my dishes by hand and have done so for 36 years. I use the dishwasher as an overflow dish drainer.
It is NOT a dish washer it is a dish sanitizer! No little elves come out when you turn it on to scrub off the food then remove the food! I use it to sanitize my dishes because of the hot temp. Should be clean dishes going in and sanitized dishes come out😀
I don't have a dW at home but I did clean then at my job and I learned the dishes come out so much better if you at least soak the dishes first then put then in
I'm somewhere in between on the rinse/don't rinse issue. I don't leave big chunnks of stuff on my dishes but I also don't rinse them to the point of looking like they've already been washed. Plus, my folks were told when they bought a new dishwasher earlier this year that today's dishwashers actually perform better if there's something left on the dishes.
In Mexico dishwashers are not that common. Most houses don´t come with it and installing it could be challenging. I hate that! Anyways, sure thing I´d rinse them. It´d still be an upgrade from actually doing all the washing myself.
When we visited Mexico, the Chef where we stayed had a small bowl of soapy water to wash every small dish right away. Rinse and air dried. Rather than a sink full of water. I do it sometimes. Saves water.
Very particular and ensure every dish is rinsed thoroughly before it goes into the dishwasher. Viola!! Sparkling dishes and clean by all means dishwasher too!!
Currently binge watching all your videos!!! Thank you so much for these videos!! Not everyone was born knowing how to clean properly lol definitely getting some motivation to clean!
OMG rinse. ALWAYS... Otherwise there is no way the dishwasher will scrub the dried-on food and it ends up baking on the plates and bowls, not talking about the food that did rinse off ends up on the bottom of the dishwasher and filter. Gross!
Modern and expensI've dishwasher encourage you not to pre rinse or scrub anything. Just use a rinse cycle at the end of the day if you run it once at two three days. Or for dried on food and burnt use a sanitize cycle. All comes out sparkling clean after 75 degrees C.
@@rkatika9 the detergent destroys 80% percent of the food. And what is not it is kept in the filters but because it was in contact with detergent it does not have unpleasant odours. Every 2 weeks i clean my filters.
@@rkatika9 I live in Switzerland and go to Lidl in germany and the w5 one is the cheapest and best after fairy platinum. I do recomend detergent tab that dizolve in maximum 5 minutes and which have good cleaning results on 50 degrees wash. I use the most the sensorwash program from Miele which detects the wasser turbidity and adapts the cycle accordingly using a minimum of 6.5l(When lightly soiled dishes are placed.
LOL the part that I love Is when her husband, I think it's her husband came into the kitchen. And saw her and made a u-turn that was funny. But the whole video is inspirational, thank you so much for sharing your ideas with us.
We don’t own a dish washer. They are not common in México but I would absolutely rinse before!! Even when I don’t have time wash them all the way we rinse and leave them on the side until we have time to properly wash them! Thanks for the tips. Every time I’m cleaning my house I hear your voice in my head about the three waves hahaha
Exactly. It takes pretty much the same amount of effort to just wash them. I just use my dishwasher as a drying rack usually. It stays clean so why not.. 😅
Great video as always, Melissa. To answer your question, I always rinse my dishes off before they are stacked on the sink. I don't,own a dishwasher, nor do I have enough space for one. I handwash all my dishes. That said, dirty dishes in the sink and counter smell nasty and can attract pests and insects into your home. I usually rinse and reuse cups and glasses. When I wash the dishes with soap, it's easier and faster because there is no scrubbing involved. I keep a long handled scrub brush on a hook near my sink for the rinsing.
I’m embarrassed, I’m an idiot, It hit me that your last name is Maker. You make things (diy recipes) and make things happen (keep things clean), it didn’t really register that is WAS your last name. Ha ha. I’m an idiot. In my world you are Melissa THE maker. 😂 . “Make that sink shine Susy!”
Both of us rinse before loading the dishwasher. No soap, just water, but that way the dishwasher never smells. Don't care what Google or the manufacturer says, I hate garbage smells in my clean kitchen. You go, Melissa!
yes i rinse before dumping in the dishwasher and no smell, dishwasher 7 years old!! I also use the glass shine one. on the other hand garbage disposer stinks and so every week have to do a deep clean. Going to try the baking soda and vinegar trick.
To extended out and drawn out. I need information straight and to the point. I don't have time to watch a 20 min video for a 5 min section of cleanup. Thanks
We don't have a dishwasher, and we prefer to wash the dishes thoroughly by hand. I've used dishwashers in the past when on holiday, at work etc, and I've never used one that gets things as clean as hand washing. There's that salty residue that I just don't appreciate, but I'd be firmly in the rinse things first category. Great tips as always, thanks.
Beautiful kitchen !! But twinges of nostalgia as the clips of your old kitchen ran past me in this video!! Hubby rinses dishes right away and places on counter keeping the sink clear and I wash with soap as I load the dishwasher through out the day! Works for me!! Love you guys!!
We are definitely a rinsing household. It's a hard habit to get the kids into, but since we don't always run the dishwasher every day, it's a necessity (most days there is only 1 place setting in there).
I pick and choose what I pre rinse before it goes in the dishwasher. I clean out my dishwasher once every 3 months so I've been able to see what pieces accumulate in the filter and what gets washed away nicely. I scoop out all remaining chunks of food, crumbs and sauces with a fork or spoon or give a heavily sauced plate a quick rinse in the sink but mostly I let the dishwasher do the cleaning for what I personally consider to be "regular" food messes. I've noticed a huge decrease in the particles stuck in the filter and a quick run on the sanitize cycle with some full strength vinegar and salt gets any hard water or smells running in a snap.
I always rinse before putting stuff in the dishwasher. But, I didn't used to do that. A handyman told me that the food particles sometimes get stuck in the garburator area of the dishwasher and can cause problems with food being re-deposited on the dishware, problems with the pump, etc. So now I rinse every time. And I periodically put some vinegar through the dishwasher. Usually, I put in a couple of cups that have just gone through my coffee maker when I clean that, so I'm getting double duty out of my vinegar, too.
There are only two of us so I find that if I’m going to rinse off my dirty dishes I might as well just wash and dry them and be done with it. Since we only run the dishwasher a couple times a week, we definitely rinse them well before putting in and our dishwasher never smells. Some dishwashers leave a puddle of water in the bottom and that can cause smells too. Great tips...thanks!
Thanks for the tips! With dishes, it depends. Eggs, avocados, baked on stuff, yes soak and preclean. Otherwise, ain't nobody got time for that. We just scrape out food pieces and into the dishwasher it goes. The dishwasher (works great with metal interior) stays humid, so stuff comes off easily. Family of four, we run it daily without fail. Then I run baking soda and vinegar periodically to avoid mildew and smells. Works for us.

As for dish washers,, Rinse first!!😊
Great tips Melissa... that paper towel used for wiping out your garbage bin can be added to your compost bin.
2:39 had me 😂😂😂😂 that was definitely my husbands move .
Wash the food off whether or not you have a dishwasher. Big pet peeve of mine.
Luiza Maria....dish washing liquid DOES NOT wash that smell away. If you have a "special" kind of dish washing liquid I would love to try it!
I am the dishwasher so.... Lol But when I had one I rinsed them!
lol

Same!! ☺️
No tip, just want to wish you, Chad and your little cutie pie a wonderful Christmas and happy and healthy New year xx
First again!
congrats :)
Yesss congrats i mean ofcourse why wouldn't the queen of clean be first! 😉😉😉
Clean My Space wsz

U luk beautiful.... 😍..... Can Yu share ur beauty tips, how do u (clean my space) keep up Soo gooodddd
I love that you do this! I really don’t get the whole fascination with posting “first” just to be first. That’s so third grade lunch line!
God bless ❤ XOXO
Lol. I wash my dishes first. Completely. Then put in the dishwasher to drip dry.
k4kale lol your comment had me!! Yes I do that as well. I feel they are most clean that way.
I don't have a dishwasher but if I did, I think I would rinse the dishes and then put them in the dishwasher! Thanks for another great video
Robin Luther .
i wipe the dishes with waterever napkin that's left or w a little water, but yes, leftovers go to the garbige not to the dishwasher, otherwise you will have to clean your dishwasher once a week... very useful info, thank you! love your channel.
Omg ew I definitely rinse my dishes before they go in the dishwasher! I don't want the filter clogging up with *gag*
And the dishwasher does such a better job!
Should be clean dishes going in and sanitized dishes come out😀
RL RL never thought about that. I like it though.
I don't have a dW at home but I did clean then at my job and I learned the dishes come out so much better if you at least soak the dishes first then put then in
I keep a clean garage bag in the bin as a liner.
It keeps the bin clean and if something leaks it go’s in the bag.
That is such a posh thing to do!
so expensive
My mexican housemate seems to disagree with you on this!
Very particular and ensure every dish is rinsed thoroughly before it goes into the dishwasher. Viola!! Sparkling dishes and clean by all means dishwasher too!!
I wash dishes by hand every day...even with a dishwasher ( use it more for storage).. do a cycle to clean it once a week
@@andreichirciu6930 and what does it do with the food leftovers it "scrubs" off the dishes?
@@rkatika9 the detergent destroys 80% percent of the food. And what is not it is kept in the filters but because it was in contact with detergent it does not have unpleasant odours. Every 2 weeks i clean my filters.
@@andreichirciu6930 and what kind of detergent are you using, may I ask? I'm just interested because that's not my experience...
Thank you for you videos! I have been adopting your techniques, and it has definitely made my life easier! Keep creating those videos!
DEFINITELY RINSE!!!
I cant see the point of having a dishwasher if you are going to deal with them in the sink first. You might as well wash, rinse and dry them.
It’s called a dish WASHER. Dishes should be scraped clean though
I "rinse" before I actually "hand wash" the dishes - saves so much time ... and if I were ever to use a dishwasher I would definitely "rinse" first!
Rinse fo’ sho’!!!!!! 😆
yes i rinse before dumping in the dishwasher and no smell, dishwasher 7 years old!!
39 people like the smell of garbage? 🤔😷
🤣🤮
I always rince my dishes, my kid's tell me l have ocd, lol , but l believe that the dishwasher needs a head start. So YES l rinse, love your videos
I rinse the smutsz off of the dishwashers putting them, I'm team Melissa on this one.. Love your videos and your cloths
Yes I rinse my dishes before I put them in the dishwasher,, ,, love your video!,,,,
I definitely rinse off all food before placing them in the dishwasher. Love your videos
your videos make me feel so validated thank you😭
There are only two of us so I find that if I’m going to rinse off my dirty dishes I might as well just wash and dry them and be done with it.
Hi Melissa. Can you please advise on how to clean cast iron stove grates.
Great timing, I'm cleaning up my kitchen right now listening to this
Love your channel! Hubby and I practically wash dishes before loading them.
I’m with you on the dishes, girl!
