Underappreciated game, one of the best platformers from the 16-bit generation. It came out really late in the Gen lifespan, 95 I believe, guess it was inevitable that it would suffer some obscurity.
You can tell this is the Japanese version because: There are no Subtitles on the Intro There is a green Star-like figure appearing after the Peed is sent Ristar's reaction is Happy instead of Angry/Determined The Mech Birds boss fight on Planet 4 Signals when they are about to attack The Cutscene of Ristar skiing downhill is removed The Planet 5 boss is more Cat-like Greedy is in the final scene of the Ending, instead of Ristar reuniting with his dad
it didn’t matter how many times i got to the final boss, he was too freakin difficult to beat, and getting to the later levels was challenging enough. either way, great game and soundtrack
This game was made by Sonic Team, the makers of the Sonic titles. By the way, this is the Japanese version of Ristar. The Western version of the game has text during the intro among other changes.
Oh to the Ehm to the Gee, my entire childhood right here. This game had the most cheerful soundtrack in history, these songs will reverse the direction of any suicide-oriented mind 100%, guaranteed.
It's several years since the last time I played and I see the pixel art is always fantastic (beautiful use of color too), as is the music, especially the boss theme that has stuck in my head since. The bird boss is my favourite. I'll have to watch a video of the western version, but from what I remember of the ending sequence, this one's better. Showing the main villain and his henchmen exiled or escaped, probably implied the idea of a sequel - which never came to be, sadly.
Japanese developers knew how to work with the Genesis/MD's soundchip, western developers, not so much. Now when it comes to sound effects, the Genesis/MD was quite weak there. Sega cheaped out a bit with the soundchip to help keep costs down.
I remember seeing this in the Sega section multiple times at toys r us as a kid(yes I'm fucking old, I admit it) and being curious. Now I see what I missed out on.
I think it was meant to say "I give up" as in "You're too good, I give up", which makes sense, since this is a japanese game and japanese language frequently omits pronouns
Finally seeing Ristar here! (No super mode enabled, weak.) Also Ristar gives different messages at the end of each world depending of your score, but I never noticed the "Give up!!" one, you are so good you should give up playing this game?! Or you should stop making a bigger score maybe. Also my cardridge always glitched on stage 5-2 and I never saw the graphics on my first life except some glitchy pixels so I had to die to see them. But I learned the level and I was able to clear it with glitched graphics, ah, memories~ I could also get stuck after beating Uranim when the pinch was too far away to catch him before the cutscene.
To the Player: at 50:42 You missed one thing; the *Mary had a Little Lamb* Easter Egg on Planet 4 after delivering the last Metronome; takes about a minute for it to play before rushing to the Mech Birds Boss, not sure if it works in the Japanese Version...
This is very impressive. It shows the capabilities of the Genesis to power crazy colors and graphics. It's unfortunate how this game released at the end of the 16 bit era.
Superb playing, my man. The amount of preparation, work and skill that probably went into this run shows. Inspires me to keep playing and improving as well, as it's one of my most favourite games of all time.
how can this person be good at getting all the bonus items and getting the highest score when leaving the levels and yet they easily get hurt by some of the simplest enemies and dragged the boss fights on?? makes no sense
One of my childhood best games ever. I think it didn't made the same sucess as Sonic because the gameplay is to hard for kids to learn in the early game
I think if this game was made before Sonic, it would have been a huge hit. Trust me, I love this game. It’s definitely impressive for its time. I just don’t understand why this game has to be so dang underrated and not-liked. What game in 1995 do you know that can have this much? The developers spent time making this wonderful game, and it’s just a lost video game. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ Edit/Question: Why when every planet if completed does it say “Give Up!!”? Is it supposed to discourage you? I’m just curious, by the way. 😊
I played this on a Sega Genesis Collection on ps2. Controls of this game is a little wonky to me. I do enjoy it's soundtrack so I'm just sitting here like how did you people play this game lol
This game has one of my favourite level transitions of all time.
One of the most underrated platformers.
Indeed, and yet another great 16-bit game with no proper sequel sadly...
@@retrosoul8770 agreed - one of SEGA's forgotten titles. Least using a mod you can play Ristar in sonic mania.
WE NEED A SEGA FIGHTING GAME WITH RISTAR AS A PLAYABLE CHARACTER
And a game from Sonic Team to boot, but a late Genesis release. Awesome little platformer.
No that goes the dynamite Headdy that’s a real good game go check it out y’all probably never even heard of that before it’s pretty good though
A seriously graphically impressive game on Mega Drive.
@Lucas Molessani "American Mega Drive", or Genesis :P
@Lucas Molessani Japan and the United States both use NTSC, so you weren't necessarily wrong.
@Lucas Molessani RWL2012 said that you should have called the NTSC Mega Drive by its United States name "Genesis".
This game is underrated as hell
think thats cool? check out vectorman

Retro Soul wrong, this is one of the best games ever! ;)
Yeah perhaps, you could say that about a decent number of Gen/MD games that get very little appreciation, like Shinobi 3.
Very underrated. Imo, one of the best games of all time. A true gem lost in the time.
I LOVED Ristar growing up back in the day! Well on the Sonic collections
It’s crazy how sega knows about this character but doesn’t give him a new game knowing that sega fans want it
Ristar's black part remind me of a patapon
@@deskofabyss2170 Wikipedia says that

The Mech Birds boss fight on Planet 4 Signals when they are about to attack

Greedy is in the final scene of the Ending, instead of Ristar reuniting with his dad
The peed?
No shit Sherlock
Also it’s obvious becuase the mega drive is the genesis in that country
So, Ristar is one of those black round creatures that pops out from killed enemies but with a star mask. Never noticed that before.
Actually according to wiki he is really a patapon with 2 eyes and a mouth and a star mask
Just like Meta Knight is a... whatever Kirby is with a mask on.

One of the best games ever made
Awwwww good nostalgia I rember this game when i was like 4 years old and i used to play it in my LG tablet. It was good memories the good o’l days
One of my favourite games of all time and a terrific classic.
Hard mode in US version: 2 hp
Hard mode in JP version: Just don’t get hit
3rd best platform game of all time, behind Mario and Sonic
it didn’t matter how many times i got to the final boss, he was too freakin difficult to beat, and getting to the later levels was challenging enough. either way, great game and soundtrack
Ristar is one of my favorite sega characters
This game needs a sequel
Don't trust Sega at the moment to do it right.
With the way Sonic Team is at the moment? No way
Quite possibly the most underrated SEGA game of all time.
The Japanese Version Is Easier Than The North American & European Versions, Because The Invincibility Cheat
@Dorian Scott
Now I know why it never worked for me. Damn region differences.
Well one of the most. Alex Kidd has to be the most underrated
Crusader of centy is the most underrated
@@Dorian_Scott HOW do I get the Japanese version of Ristar the shooting star.❓❓⁉️❓

Eh I think sonic
Nice, you finally added Ristar.

Un juegazo de la generación de consolas de 16 bits, toda una pasada esos gráficos :D

To think that this gem of a game released near the end of the Mega Drive's life cycle. This game should have gotten more attention
That was actually better than I thought it would be.
1:41:31 I like that ristar voiceover
Interestingly, one of the first foes you run into is a rabbit with stretchy ears trying to grab you. That's impressive since that was almost sonic.
i loved playing this game
If people say to you that Mega Drive's music sounds terrible, show them this game.
Japanese developers knew how to work with the Genesis/MD's soundchip, western developers, not so much. Now when it comes to sound effects, the Genesis/MD was quite weak there. Sega cheaped out a bit with the soundchip to help keep costs down.
I remember being in second grade and playing this on Sega channel with my big sis. Music and game play is legendary.
We need a Ristar 2
True
He needs A sequel
It's long overdue.

Oh dam I see how old man I just played it and it's alright I love old skool games 😎
The score screen saying "Give up!!" after each stage is pretty rude lol.
I know right? I seen other playthroughs and this one gets that message more than the ones I saw. I wonder why.
I think they forgot to put the word Don't in there, which seems rather odd. When you play a good game like this, and you are on a roll, why give up.
I think it was meant to say "I give up" as in "You're too good, I give up", which makes sense, since this is a japanese game and japanese language frequently omits pronouns

That's probably a engrish kind of mistake, since this "give up" stuff is only on the Japanese version.

It does work
Wouldn’t mind seeing this guy in Super Smash Bros Ultimate
Ristar was drawn by yuji uekawa the same artist who did the design for modern sonic.💙☝🏻☺️🦊 if I was right still....😓
Yes I know im late but not too late
He's a Patapon with a star mask?! Nooo...that can't be true!

I never could beat thus game as a kid.l
Omg, I love how they reanimated the names and stuff! 😆
28:54 Love this music.
I just realised the first boss of this game was ripped and recoloured for freedom planet.
Of course they had too do that.
Wait, what?

Fedor Java Gamer except he has never had another game release in years.
I thought I was the only person that noticed that XD
Nah, this character has no resemblance to Kirby at all.
Dynamite Headdy is more closer to Kirby, but that's by Treasure, not SEGA
Las versiones japonesas siempre son mejores jaja
Una lastima que la versión de Game Gear sólo se porteo una única vez.

What a slow ass fight with the mole boss ffs
Damn no guns, it’s a SHOOTING star or is it not
He’s only called a shooting star when he launches himself in long distances.
Is this What Kirby Looks Like on Drugs?
The final boss is very difficult. I could never do it.
