First of all, big thanks to Collision Chaos Radio for the awesome remixes, it was great motivation during development! Find more of CCR's remixes on their channel: / @collisionchaos
Ristar, where you at? Ristar was my first Game Gear game and it wasn't until many years later that I was able to play the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive version - I immediately fell in love with both. He's been suspiciously absent since his debut, other than some minor one-off cameos (our boy deserves better than being a capsule toy stuck in a vending machine or spending his days waving race flags). This project is a labor of love I've done in my free time, exploring the concept of Ristar as a modernized 2.5d platformer. I went with the original gameplay design and took a whole bunch of liberties to make it feel just a touch more modern, iterating until I've landed on what you see in this video. Be warned though - there's currently a whole laundry list of things that still need to be fixed and a few interesting gameplay mechanics I didn't have time to implement before recording this video. ~2.5 months in my free time, which would usually be super late in the night or very, very early in the morning.
Where can I download this?
Really sorry, I'm unable to offer a downloadable demo at this time! Even though this features original content (programming/art/etc.) and is a fan project with no means of monetary gain, Ristar is still property of Sega. If at any point I'm able to offer a demo, I'll be sure to update, so keep every single one of your eyes peeled!
What engine/software did you use?
Engine is Unity, and for the art, a combination of Maya/Zbrush/Substance Painter/Photoshop. SFX are a mish mash of CC0 samples I've found online and original clips I've recorded, most edited in Reaper and/or Audacity
And the music?
As mentioned above, all of the music featured in this video is by Collision Chaos Radio, used with permission
Are you going to finish this? What's the future of this project?
I would absolutely love to! I'm super eager to jump in and start building out the rest of Ristar's world (I have some fun ideas for Planet Sonata), but because this is a fan project that I can focus on only in my spare time, updates from here on out will be very, very slow. Life 'sponsibilities and all, you know? Quite obvious, but I'd LOVE to collaborate with Sega on a reimagining of their classic hero who just hasn't gotten the attention he deserves!

I think the game is good overall my only problem is why stores color palette it just doesn’t remind you of the genesis race store and that one well it is it was shiny but hey I’m not complaining this is pretty good

Bro more people HAVE to talk about Ristar. It's EXTREMELY underrated.
SegaSammy Holdings released their March 2021 fiscal year plans to the public and in that document, they state that one of their strategies is reviving their dormant IPs, like Ristar.
If they make another Ristar game, I’m hoping it will be in the style of this demo!

I heard they stroke down Shinmegami Tensei MMORPG. And quitted partnership of Sega and Archie Comics.
Absolutely beautiful. From the stunning 2.5D visuals, the music done justice, and the gameplay refined. Almost made me tear up.
Nice, reminds me when Sega tried to "remake" in 3D some of their classics in the ps2, which where pretty bad, with the exception being that this actually looks pretty darn cool and sounds amazing, great job with what you have done so far, hopefully one day we can see the full release.

Wait, WHAT? I can't believe I'm just seeing this now. You did an incredible job with this, and I'm only 30 seconds into the video. Really, really quality work here - instantly subbed and looking forward to seeing your progress on this project!! :) I love Ristar so much and it's absolutely criminal how small the fangame / modding scene is. This is such a breath of fresh air, normally I'd only expected to see a rough engine test and maybe a few finished assets, but there's quite a substantial amount of stuff to show here
And I also like how the birds mask can be taken off and can be used as a shield!
I know I'm a few weeks late to the party, but wow. I adored this. Ristar is one of my all-time favorites, and seeing stuff like this improves my day tenfold. I'm definitely subbing.
a classic like this coming back today in a new generation thanks to the fans is a flame of hope and endless possibilities for other classics to come back one day too
man this looks super cool! the only thing I do find weird is how Ristar looks more angry than his appearance in the old megadrive release, but still, this looks amazing.

You mean Sonic Team? Sega has no say anymore really. Being Sonic Team owns Ristar. Pretty sure Nintendo would work with them to make a game if they really wanted a Ristar game, Tho the fact he's not really put into games much anymore, I doubt the fanbase is big enough to make them want to make a Ristar game....

HOLY SHIT this is fucking amazing!! This is such a good look for this franchise, I hope you continue it. While I feel as if the art style could do with a bit of work the functionality of this looks top notch

Looks good gameplay-wise, but I have a few issues with the visuals.
- Ristar's face just looks a bit off because of the rounder eyes and centered mouth
- Flora just doesnt look as vibrant as the original. Watching this I was like "where's the color?" because of the lack of blues and pinks that the original game made use of.
Other than those gripes, it's looking great so far. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the feedback! A few others also noted Ristar's odd appearance, so I've just posted a new video with a WIP redesign closer to the original (at the end of the video). And I totally agree with the Flora art - I created a lot of the pink foliage and ferns from the original and cooler-colored assets, but didn't get a chance to implement them for this video. I've also since knocked down the yellows a bit and some color balancing, which I'll share in a video in a month or so. Thanks for watching and the great input!
It's really cool ! Ristar should climb the ladders faster and the feedback from headbutting the enemies should feel more stunning, though (like it does when hitting a wall), as well as when taking some items. Also a more modern physics when Ristar swings would be nice. Wonderful job nonetheless ! Really love the slapping from the rabbits and the mask from the owls ! (even if I don't really get what it does lol). The measuring gauge when flying and the planet when finishing a level is a really good addition ! Same when Ristar sliding down a ladder.
OMG this is amazing! wish I still had the old fan website up so could share this further! I really hope this goes further than just a concept and Sega do the sonic mania treatment for good old Ristar.
One suggestion, Ristar looks too angry, he was always so carefree, i know you said this was an older model but thought would be worth noting.

Man, this looks so frikkin excellent! And the quality looks pretty damn professional! Everything from the environments to the character designs to the animation to the gameplay and to the music! It's everything I could want in a Ristar revival! I'll definitely be looking forward to seeing further updates to this! :D

Nice job, I love it! Looking forward to see a release version. Also, imho, I prefer the way the arms move when climbing like in the original one, as in arms going down, around the back and over.
Ristar should definitely make a comeback. I feel bad for him since pretty much no one at SEGA cared for the original game since it was towards the end of Genesis’ lifecycle, and because of Sonic of course. If Ristar was originally made and released back when the first Sonic or Sonic CD were new, then I have no doubt that Ristar would’ve became SEGA’s secondary franchise, like The Legend of Zelda is after Super Mario Bros. He was robbed of his potential, so I hope we can see a full game out of this one day, and who knows, maybe it could even be picked up by them? (Though I doubt it, Sonic Mania, Origins, and Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania are miracles in of themselves, I’d dare say that even Crazy Taxi has a better chance, but it would still certainly be nice, especially if we can have both) Who knows. But in any case, keep up the good work! *We will watch your career with great interest…*

This game is incredible because you managed to reproduce it but in 3D, you reproduced Ristar well and moreover it is my favorite character and if you sell them I will try to play it.

This looks amazing! I'm actually surprised that not many ever attempted to make fan-games for ristar (At least as far as I'm aware) but this one is certainly one project I'd love to see actually become an official title for the series! This looks amazing and has potential to be a fantastic ristar game in its own right!
Thanks very much for the kind words! I'm also very surprised with the lack of Ristar fan games. Considering the endless amount of Sonic fan games and other fan games based off of all of Sega's IPs, I'd assume Ristar would get a little attention too!

Considering the fact that Planet Flora looks nearly identical to how it looked in the original game, this looks more like remake than a sequel. Still, it looks awesome! It’s definitely how I’d envision a remake/continuation of Ristar in the modern gaming era!

This looks almost official. You should pitch this to sega. I feel like as long as youd be able to develop it yourself or something theyd do it. i mean i can easily see this as a streets of rage 4 or alex kidd dx situation.
If I could offer a suggestion, could you give Ristar some actual star-themed powers? Like shooting stars from his hands or mouth, star-powered shoes for short hovering, star punches or star kicks, star zap dashes on the ground or air for speed or attacking enemies, or some kind of star-themed powerups? I think that'd add more to the gameplay experience than just the extending grabbing limbs.
It would be criminal for Sega to not acknowledge this as something that they should fully get behind 🔥

Wow, well done! This is easily one of my favorite games from my childhood. Our only hope of getting another Ristar game seems to be through fans because Ristar came out at the very tail-end of the Genesis and most people missed it because of that. Also, most people born after 1990 were too young to even have experienced it since none of my younger friends even knew this game existed. One of the very best Genesis game out there and one of the best soundtracks, too.
Definitely one of my favorite games from childhood also! The first time I played was on an old game gear that ate through batteries like crazy. It's a shame that it was released right before Genesis was being phased out in favor of the Saturn and there's never been a true sequel, but I'm glad Ristar at least had some re-releases throughout the years. @@DevBoyDibs I'm sure you played Nights Into Dreams? The same person did the soundtrack for both Ristar and Nights (Tomoko Sasaki) and Nights still to this day is my favorite gaming soundtrack of all time with Ristar in a close second.

Great! Graphics and modeling is cute. It's looks like a remake. Some additional components also seem interesting. This part(05:36) in particular is reminiscent of "Nights into dreams". I was sad that this game series wasn't released anymore, but I'm glad see fan game!

This looks cool. I really loved the original pixel style from the sega but this is a great modern remodel!
1) I would totally get behind Ristar sequel on next generation hardware

This is incredible ive always loved ristar it's one of my favorite games ever this is very well done the only thing is that ristar looks a tad bit weird but I kinda like it also he's animations look beautiful incredible work keep it up.
