- An easy installation and a great product, the Hogue monogrip will improve the feel and profile of your stock Taurus 85 / 605 .38 / .357 magnum.
Unfortunately the instructions in the packaging don't tell you that you need to remove the stock roll pin (which is pressed into the frame of the revolver) and replace that pin. I learned the hard way and in this video I show and explain every little detail to make it easier for you, including exactly what tools you need.
Hope it helps! - Авто/Мото
2022, and STILL the best instructions to be found anywhere. Thanks!
The original pin is a roll pin. There are specific punches for roll pins. The pin will remove easier and be less likely damaged by using a roll pin punch.
Just installed mine. Use a roll pin punch because it self centers the punch. I used a gunsmith block that has holes in it to allow the roll pin room to fall out during extraction. Also, make sure the new roll pin rides in the molded channel of the new grip. It guides the saddle to the proper location. I used blue loctite on the new screw.
Just switched out my grip on a Taurus 942m. Your video applied perfectly well to that small frame revolver! Thanks!
PS….keeping the replacement pin in was definitely the tricky part of the entire process!
5 years later, you helped me install my grip. Thanks lol Merry Christmas
Changed my grips and I can now actually enjoy shooting .357. With the stock grips it actually hurt. I'm not a light weight as I have shot .500 and .460 S&W handguns. Shot shotguns and Mosin Nagant 7.52x54r one handed. So these grips really helped me as well as this video on how to change them. Thanks
I used Hart brand punch set; started with 3/32, halfway through switched to 2/32. Drove the pin most of the way through, used pliers to pull it out. I recommend using an old dish towel folded level into 3" for a base; this will protect the frame and you can drive the pin into the cloth. Firm, steady, hard taps and the pin will start to move - be sure to keep the punch straight. The rubber grips will slide straight off - then be sure to clean the frame before installing your new grips.
There's a track in the grip. Initially, just line the stirrup up with the track and the stirrup will just follow it as you feed the grip on. The pin in the stirrup is intended to be smaller, to allow the stirrup to float as it is fed through the track. Also, check to see that the screw hole is aligned with the stirrup, before seating the grip. This allows the stirrup to move much easier, when trying to get the screw started. Once you get a few turns on the screw, then push the grip into position and tighten the screw.
Just put this on my 605 and WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!!! Taking it to the range next weekend to get a few rounds through it.
Thanks Ari as your review and installation is indeed VERY helpful. Legitimately was step by step by following your instructions. Excellent work ..Cheers 👊🏼💯
Your video doubtlessly saved me hours of frustration when installing the new Hogg grips on my Taurus 856. Thank you so much!!!
My grip package had no instructions. This video made my day. Thanks! It fits my Taurus UltraLite 22 mag perfectly.
Thanks! I was running into the same problem with the pin. I thought about taking a hammer and a punch to it, but a little voice in my head kept telling me I would break something. Thanks for being the guinea pig!
Just got my 605 a few weeks ago and new right away i was going to need to upgrade the grip ...this Hogue grip feels reel nice ...glad i found your video as the instructions just said remove old grip ? with no helpful mention of removing the pin ...good job ...thanks
I have an older stainless steel, concealed hammer 85. I changed my grips in about 3 minutes. Everything was straightforward. Thanks for the video. Oh, btw I pinched one end of the roll-pin with pliers. I barely squeezed it just enough to get it started, and then just taped it in the rest of the way. It wad so easy.
I just got a new 605 Defende3r and will ABSOLUTELY be installing these! BTW- I have a pair on their way for a vintage Model 66 I just got also! Thank you for a job well done!
Great instructions. Just put same grip on my newly purchased 605. Totally agree what a difference.
very helpful, thank you for taking the time to make this contribution to the gun community!
Thanks for this video. You're right. No one else talks about the newer pin on the factory grip. I'll be installing this myself pretty soon here, for my Taurus 856, as the factory grip hurts my hand when shooting it.
Thank you! This is exactly what I need to do to replace the short bulls-head grip on my 905 with the Hogue monogrip in your video. It's hard to get that pin out, as you said. I tried with an ice pick but didn't realize how tight it is in there! Looking for a punch now....
Hitting a roll pin with an ice pick with actually expand it. Technically your supposed to used a roll pinch punch but I’ve found a regular punch works just fine. Takes wacking though!
Just picked mine up and I'll definitely be changing the grip. Thanks
Finally a video on those grips. Well done!
Thanks. Wouldn’t have thought to trade out the grip. My hands are huge. So I’m headed online now to find something for my 605 💯
Saw one of those at the gun store, love the caliber, but the grip was to small for my hand, now you make me go back to store and buy it ...... thanks
I knocked this out in just a couple of minutes but only because I watched your video and others on how to do it.
Great video, I just received a 605 from Taurus as a replacement for a Rossi mid 406 due to a safety recall where they deemed it UNFIXABLE. I loved that gun but I really like feel of the 605. Now I’ll purchase the Hogue and thanks to your video I’ll be good to go👍🏼
R.B.
Just received mine last week...only complaint is 6shots vs 5shots
I just changed my 605 grip. A 1/8" roll pin punch worked perfectly. Pin came out in about a minute with no damage and no need for a pliers.
Thanks for the video. I'm too ignorant and hard-headed to read the instructions. This helped a lot.
Thank you for this video, I put these grips on my Taurus 905 9mm revolver. date of writing 06/02/2021
I wend to auto zone to buy a punch set, of course they were out; went around the corner to another auto parts store and it was closed, prob cause of memorial day? Went to Rural King and could only find a nail set punch set 1, 2, and 3/32: the shelves looked bare.
The nail punch set was cheap so I bought it. I used an old book and punched it out as far as I could then used vise grips to "gently" pull it out from the other side. All good and I saved the old parts.
The grips don't fit quite as well as the same grips on my S&W Mod 65 357 mag, but close enough, not worth fiddling with: love these grips!
I think I could have punched that pin far enough with a framing nail with the point cut off to get at it with the vice grips, just be careful not to damage it.
I noticed my 905 9mm was stamped on the grip frame "605" likely the same frame for both guns, fine with me, 605 357 is strong.
Once I break this model in, I'm gonna look for wood round butt grips, old school, but I like those and would like to try them.
Thanks, for the video, just bought the grip for my 605!
Worked like a charm. Thnx for the help. Struggled to get the screw in a lil but u just got to push it in and screw. Hope i didn't overtighten it. Wifes pink grips successfully installed. Lol
Thanks for this to do video. I'm waiting for my Taurus 605 almost 3 monts. Im from Europe mabye thats way it took so long. Definitely it is a good tutorial viedeo and I think you sawed me some time to figure out how to install this monogrip.
Thank you.
So glad I could help! You'll love the gun.
love my little 605 but it packed quite a punch with the .357mag, so I ordered a Pachmayr 3 finger wood grip from Amazon for $35.00. It was for a Taurus 85 small frame. It fit my 605 perfectly ! Installation time was less than 5 minutes.. Improved the look and feel ! The .357mag are no problem now.
LInk to Amazon listing please! Thanks
Look on Amazon for 'Pachmayr Taurus 85 & Small Frame Wood Revolver Grips'. Checkered one is cheaper by $3.
Great video. I've got the 605 5 shot .357 & absolutely dislike the grip. Can't wait to change it out.
Definitely need more than the typical gunsmithing hammer, that pin is a bear to drive out. Thanks for the info, I was having trouble and second guessing myself.
I just got my 605 in a trade yesterday and when I got it home I started cleaning it, so I used a 1/8” punch to drive out roll pin, worked perfect! Also people, clean your guns! I know I know it’s a tool but say you keep using a tool and don’t clean it then I a middle of a job it stop working! Same goes for a gun!
Thanks Mr Gun expert. Tell us more? Next you'll tell me my gun needs ammo to function. Crazy talk.
Thank you! I’ve been trying to find this answer about the pin
Very thorough! Thank you! & that's a sweet 605!
Thanks for the video! Definitely throwing those on my 82.
Thanks for the instructions, quite helpful and well laid out. You mind sharing details about that holster, look really nice.
Just picked up my 605 Friday. Because of this vid it only took me about 3 minutes to change my grip. Inside the new Hogue grip there's a groove that the clip/stirrup and pin slide right through. Perfect fit. Now if one day I can find some ammo for it I'll let you know how it shoots.
thank Comrade Biden for your ammo problem. here we go again ammo shortage for who knows how long this time
I just ordered one for My 605 SS. Thanks for sharing 🇺🇸
I think this Houge grip is a must for the 605 not so much for the 85! Plus it makes this gun look sweet! Great job!!
Thank you! It looks and feels much better now. :)
Many thanks very helpful!!! Happy holidays
2023 and your instructions are really helpful thank you but I would offer a bit of advice put the loctite on for the main reason that it will vibrate and have the shock of recoil.
Thanks for the video! Just put mine on with your help!
I just beat the pin out using a craftsman 1/8 punch and a small ball peen hammer on my bed. I put Viridian laser grips that I had a coupon with the 605. They are just the right size as they allow your pinky to rest on the grip also.
They also retain the Taurus Logo. For $100 a great upgrade I think. They are hard rubber like Hogue. The laser runs off two larger watch batteries in the grip. Grip goes on with 3 screws.
The switch is on the front of the grip and goes on when you grab the grip. It has a on/off switch on the base of the grip.
Thanks for posting this. You are right about the installation instructions are kinda vague.
Thanks for the video boss! Great job.
I'm going to put mine on after I clean the gun! Thanks! 👍👍
Hey don't beat yourself up that was a good video man nobody has a video . bought the 605 I love it but I hate the grip good job I was impressed
I sprayed some CLP in that hole with the roll pin & let it seep in over night. Popped right thru the next day. Pounded it out from Right Side to the Left. It was extremely tight before...
Nicely done young man.
👍🏻on the video...I have the same exact Hogue grip on my S&W 640 Pro, vast improvement!
i just got a 605 357 last week love the gun hate the pin so i took it out and kept the grip on untill i get my new grips in a few days i didnt have a punch so i made my own i put the gun on a pillow case on my pillow over my knee and smacked it out it was tuff asf😲 but worked im gonna put smaller grips on with a screw cuz thats much easier to take off i feel
Hey dude thanks for the video I got a Hogue for mine but I had to run to the hardware store the screw Hogue sent was 1/8 too short it would not catch to tighten up no matter how hard I tried.
I like the grips that came with it I'm not changing a thing it's perfect the way it was engineered
Great video very informative!
Looks good on it. I'm not sure that I'll replace the grip on my 605...I like the factory one better than I do other models' factory grip.
Founded in 1856, Mayhew Tools is an ISO 9001-certified company and the oldest punch and chisel manufacturer in the United States.
Ok so I just picked up the same grip for my 605. The 3/32 punch was just a little too small. It ended up snapping on me. I tried a 1/8 and it fit perfect. Just an FYI.
Thank 🙏🏻 you for commenting this. I didn't want to snap my 3/32 punch.
Spot on! The 1/8" is the proper size punch to drift out this pin.
I've had a 605 for a few years, makes a great ankle gun. I figured the pin was how to get the grip off, thanks for that.
On a darker note when watching the vid you did not check the cylinders, placed your finger on the trigger and pointed the pistol at yourself.
IMHO when instructing weapon rules and safety are the most important items.
Again, overall good vid, thank you...
You can also use a nail of the same diameter with the tip cut off and filed flush.
Good video, but I have a smaller hand and the original grip just works fine. I'll consider it though when firing the full load 357 maqnum.
Good video . Thanks for the info .
Thanks just installed mine!!!
Nice vid Brother, I've got a 2019 856 Ultra-Lite with that same grip pin.
Thank you for the great video
Great job with the video.
the factory grip is fine with me. my pinky hanging off doesn't bother me much. Keep your eye on the screw below the cylinder. mine came loose and got lost. Taurus sent me a new one and I'm back in business.
Big thanks for that tip. Now that I know I will use loctite on mine. It was a little loose.
Sticking with the stock grip. I like it.
You'll like it until you buy speedloaders and find out they won't fit.
You must have lucked out. My Hogue directions did not even mention a pin, just a "stock pin". The pin they enclosed was barely long enough to go from one end of the metal
handle to the other, let alone hold the stirrup. I could not get it in at all, the fit was that tight. I had to use the "stock" original pin, reseated it and had to hacksaw off a portion
so that it would fit in the new grip. Yikes! Good feeling grip however. Thanks for the video. Helpful
Yeah I almost went that route. Then I discovered that the new pin was taped to the inside of the packaging. But not until after I called Hogue and complained. They wound up sending me a new pin...then I found the original.
Thats a bunch for the video. Been wanting to replace same grip on my 85.
I ordered wood grips directly from the taurus website for model 856...
The ridges on the grip are a thumb shelf, allowig your thumb pressure of your hand to control the weapon with hotter 357 rounds that wil no doubt kick substantially.
I would prefer the stock grip with the added control.
Yep when I first bought my 605 I tried the Rogue grip and took it off immediately after the range. I found it did not really help at all and I don't like the frame hitting the palm of my hand plus the grip is longer and not as concealable
Nice video, I have the 85, but I prefer the stock grip on mine!
Plus you can order the combat grip from Taurus, it's a three finger grip, it goes on like the old Taurus stock grips!
About to pick up a 605 because of you and your 605 series. Thanks man. Looking for a laser attachment as well. Any advice?
Just got that same revolver and have the grip on its way.😁
Helped alot
Awesome. Thank you so much. 🇺🇸
Got this gun finally after 38 weeks as as replacement gun for my Rossi 461 357 Magnum because of the recall on Rossi revolvers First impression out of the box is that the grips got to go. Nice video thanks for posting. Is there a package label that specifies what this mono grip # is so I buy the right one?
Thank you for doing this video my gun can be loaded with six rounds with out turning the cylinder and the shells can be ejected all at once. James
Thanks man no one covers the pin removal
Super Video! Danke aus Deutschland!
picked up a 605 at a show the other day. loved shooting it, but the factory grip is awful. thanks for the video!
Ari, what kind of holster are you using? Thanks for the vid.
Thank you !
I installed mine today (wooden one and Taurus 65) can’t get work with using the same hole that I take the pin out so I use the big hole instead
Please help I keep screwing but it won’t get tight but the grip is in place
Do the Hogue grips make it easier use speed loaders? I have the model 85 ultralite and the speed loaders don't work very well with the factory grips. Also can the factory grips be reinstalled if need be?
Just got my Taurus 605 today and not only is my pinky off, but a small portion of my hand too. The handle is too small... Due to the current virtual circumstances, I couldn't just walk in the store and feel it in my hands...
Does the Hogue grip h hinder the use of speedloaders? I have hks 36-A speedloaders I bought for my 605 back in December and heard rumors of this grip causing with the use of a speedloader
That frame will cut the web of your thumb once you load a 357 magnum. I wish hogue grips made it wrap all around the frame for safety not by looks.
What make and model holster did you have? I looked good and very functional.
Many thanks!👍👍👍
I recently purchased my first Revolver ( Taurus m66 .357 Mag. Rubber Grip) and noticed that the Frame rocks a little bit when handling ( especially when extending arm to aim and pulling it back) Don't know if this is common, or Not? Appreciate any reply, thanks
You wanna use a starter punch for roll pins. It has a round tip.
I am missing the main front screw that holds the cylinder in place what is that part called?? The Yoke screw? sideplate screw or a tak down screw?
Hi, I was wondering what kind of IWB holster you're using for your 605? It looks classy and snug with your Taurus 605. At this point, you had your Taurus 605 for a few years already. How is it holding up so far and approximately how many rounds have you shot? Thanks.
Hello, how are you? One question, would you be kind enough to tell me the exact model of the Bianchi Holster you showed in the video? Thank you very much!!!
i have a sw 686 with the pin problem. my problem is the pin sticks out on one side more than the other and it gouged one side of the grip inside. whats a good way to push it through and even it out?
