Also this proves that Fifth Harmony are overlooked HEAVILY as vocalists since all of them can support. They’re even on par with SM’s girl groups vocally. They’re really this generation’s vocal powerhouse western girl group dare I say 🔥

@Czennen Taeyeon is def better belter than Aly though? Taeyeon now is consistent with bE5s with consistent resonance A4-C#5/D5 area. Ally is not far behind but yea Taeyeon is better, their head voice same with development but Ally's quality is sometimes better, and lower register Taeyeon by far no comparison.

So Dinah and Ally are the best overall? Oh you said Ally is number one, agreed! I’ll be honest, I’ve never listened to Fifth Harmony, only Camila Cabello’s solo music. I really liked Ally’s singing in this video so I’ll check more of Fifth Harmony’s stuff. Normani’s runs and whistles are so nice. Camila I love her voice but only sometimes, her tone sometimes doesn’t sound pleasant to me that’s subjective I think, her tone sounded best in her Havana era for me. This was a nice analysis and very good introduction to them for me!!

I completely agree with everything in this video 🤍 Seeing from both the channel name and your profile pic, I can tell that Ally is your favourite 5H member but I noticed that there is no bias towards her whatsoever (aka you are acknowledging her flaws and have no problem doing it). My favourite is Lauren because I just love everything about her voice... the rasp, the vocal weight (it's sort of a medium-weight voice) and a lot of other things. I agree that the rasp was unhealthy at first but I think Lauren has learnt to control it and she uses it for stylistic purposes nowadays.

  • @vocalising4218
    @vocalising4218 Год назад +5

    My personal ranking:
1st: Dinah. She is the most well rounded of them all, has good development in all her registers - decent lows (for soprano), strong belts up to C5/C#5, beautiful falsetto and agility, she can sing melisma. The only issues she really has are on upper belts (and occasionally mid belts) inconsistency with lows, and breath control.
2nd: Ally. she used to have better belting technique than Dinah but in recent years she's been sounding quite tense and throaty esp in the fifth octave, once or twice she literally had to sing the National Anthem in the same range as Lauren did. Her sustained belts sometimes sound tense and strained, think being overworked in 5H and not properly resting her voice have caused this. Lows aren't terrible, but def the weakest compared to the others.
Overall her belts, her range plus head voice are her real strengths.
3rd: Lauren. She has improved so much in the last couple years, these days she sounds just as good as she did before her decline. Lows and mid belts are her strengths and where she really is most comfortable. Her main issue is longevity (at the start of tour she is at her best, at the end she tires easily and sounds throaty.) Another thing is inconsistency within her supported range- on a good day she can easily support a B4 / C5 like the one shown, on a bad day she is straining on the same notes. Despite this, she has been very very consistent with the E5s in Expectations (which is impressive considering she doesn't often belt this high). Falsetto has become very thin and airy, that's probably why she doesn't use it much. Her range is the smallest in the group - She needs to show us more range and explore her voice. Ideally I'd like to see her support more consistently, improve her falsetto, and give us more upper belts.
    4th: Camila.
lows are actually one of her strengths and she is very comfortable in this area, I heard her sing a C#3 with decent volume and it even had vibrato (will put a link if I can find the clip.)
agility is good, runs and riffs are her main selling point and it's easy to see why - shes very creative with them, speed is quick although this can be seen as a negative as they don't always flow so well as a result. she has a tendency to overdo it like Christina, but its her trademark I suppose. She never runs out of breath while doing them either, something people (including me) can forget when talking about agility.
Belts are decent at times, but they're usually very nasal and unsupported. however she does have a lot of ease in her upper belting range, check out her G5 in Cry for me, it didn't seem too difficult for her. Overall she does show a bit more consistency than Lauren in terms of longevity and she isn't afraid to explore most areas of her voice, however the nasality, tension in belting and lack of a proper supported range hold her back.
5th: Normani. She doesn't seem to have development in any area of her voice except whistle register and maybe lows. Projection is an issue - she can be airy on lows and not loud enough while belting. Most of her belts are very tense and like Camila, she doesn't have a consistent supported range. As others have mentioned she has had some good moments with mid belts, I do like her A4s and the few times she has tried upper belts (I lied and once when she sustained an E5). Very good agility, however Camila is generally better with pitch when it comes to more complex runs.
Her strengths lie in whistles, falsetto and agility, she also has the widest range in the group. Also I want to point out that it's not that Normani is a bad singer and I like her, but when compared with the rest of her group she is the weakest link.

    • @allykelly
      @allykelly  Год назад +8

I'm still sticking to ally as best because her bad moments in recent years that she was sick she become better in her gospel or worship song on her channel
The mid belt here sounds pretty nice just a bit pushed the tension isn't really obstructive
      ruclips.net/video/CegplnVCYNE/видео.html
Dinah isn't consistent with C#5 her unsupported C#5 outnumbers her supported C#5 but her mid belt are still good

On the other hand she is a far better belter than Jade, I'd say her belts are as good as Leigh Anne's (although obviously Leigh has more range). The reason I say Leigh is because when it comes to belting, neither she nor Lauren have issues with vibrato, unlike Jade and Jesy. Leigh is the second best belter of LM, Lauren is the third best belter of 5H, but they both have other areas besides belting which they need to work on, so that's why it makes sense to compare them.

Very cool video. Just a few things I respectfully disagree with.
    1. I think these rankings are more spot on for the first 2-3 years of the group. After around 2015/2016, some members got better or worse at certain things and the differences became even more dramatic once they all went solo for the most part. Which leads me to the next point.
    2. Camila has been a better belter/vocalist than Lauren from about mid-2015 onwards. While Lauren has recovered somewhat from her vocal decline, she has yet to re-pass Camila and tbh the gap between them vocally has actually increased despite her recovery. Camila, for all nasality and thinness that creeps into her upper belts, belts with a level of ease and stability that Lauren has yet to come close to since about 2014/2015. Lauren still strains more often than not above B4 and her vowel formation is not as good as Camila’s particularly between C5 and F5. Even besides belting, Camila is clearly more agile and has an easy and smart use of her upper register whereas Lauren’s upper register is practically nonexistent, and the margin between them in the lower register is not nearly big enough to make up for all the other areas that Camila exceeds her.
    3. I actually understand why Ain’t No Other Fan didn’t want to get into the upper register conversation, simply because strict classical technique applies the least to upper register pop vocals by far out of all the upper registers. Rarely anyone in pop music uses connected head voice for stylistic reasons. It just sounds very out of place. That’s why Ally’s examples aren’t in concert. Dinah herself said she took classical voice but she just didn’t like the style. So it makes more sense to judge them off control and execution of their falsetto, whistles, and contemporary style head voice, than it is to base it purely on classical technique. In that case, Ally and Dinah are pretty much tied. Ally can get a little higher than Dinah, but she has a rough spot between B5 and D6 that she has trouble controlling whereas Dinah can ascend and descend to and from the 6th octave with relative ease. Normani is third place. Beautiful whistle register and solid falsetto, but her head voice is more powerful than the rest of her voice and lacks control. Camila is fourth and close to tying with Normani. I’ll say her head voice has improved pretty dramatically since 2018/2019. Her falsetto usage has always been decent but she has more control and less shrillness now. She seems to have a whistle register now that’s still underdeveloped but we’ll see if that goes anywhere. Lauren is obviously fifth as she barely has any use of her register, no head voice whatsoever and the half decent falsetto she did once have is now pretty flimsy and muffled.
    4. Since the group split, Dinah has improved in agility (see her version of Beyoncé’s Ego live run) enough to be considered a very good runner/riffer, not in just relation to the group but in general. I don’t see too many mainstream singers that can outpace her, especially not in her generation. I’ll also argue she’s overtaken Normani in terms of lower register, but only really in the past 2 years and she’s been mostly on hiatus from the industry so it may take a little while to confirm. Ally and Camila have also improved their lower registers as well, Lauren’s is still solid as before, but Normani seems to have declined a bit. Even her support which was consistently down to G3 has withered a bit. On the belting side, Ally’s abilities seemed to have waned a bit as she’s sounded thinner and tense in the last few years. Dinah’s still about the same as she was, Lauren and Camila have both improved, and Normani has too although not as much as the other two.
So based on what’s been demonstrated up to this date. Ranking wise its-
    Lower register:
    1. Lauren
    2. Camila
    3. Dinah
    4. Normani
    5. Ally
    Belts:
    1. Ally
    2. Dinah
    3. Camila
    4. Lauren
    5. Normani
    Upper register:
    1. Dinah/Ally
    2. Normani/Camila
    3. Lauren
    Agility:
    1. Dinah
    2. Normani/Camila
    3. Lauren
    4. Ally
    Overall:
    1. Dinah
    2. Ally
    3. Camila
    4. Lauren
    5. Normani

@@allykelly that Genius session was the healthiest Lauren’s voice had sounded in years and that Empire State of Mind performance is literally Camila’s worst concert vocals since she’s been solo so I don’t think those are genuinely comparable.
Lauren’s always had wider support, that much is obvious. She’s just inconsistent on the high end. She has a naturally more powerful voice and imo has better natural belting coordination than Camila, but if we’re gonna use the term “throaty”, Lauren takes the cake on that. She has her good moments, but overall she sounds very strained more often than not and it’s clear she doesn’t have much ease above C5. Camila on the other hand is basically a smaller voice attempting to be powerful. She has less throat tension like Lauren and more tongue tension like you said. But her ease and access to that part of her voice and lack of history of vocal damage from external sources make her a more consistent a belter than Lauren. In essence, at Lauren’s best, she’s better than Camila, but at her worst it’s bad. Camila’s best is not as good as Lauren’s best and her worst is not as bad as Lauren’s worst. She’s just generally more consistent and a bit more capable than Lauren (particularly in the upper belting range).
Dinah’s G5-A5 in head voice isn’t really shrill to me so much as it’s breathy. Definitely her weak spot, but it gains more fullness and stability around Bb5 and above (which is where Ally seems to start having issues). She has her moments though, especially her G5s during Flex performances on the 7/27 tour. Also this seems to be an area she’s improved on in the last couple years (see Ego cover and Tennessee Whiskey cover).

@@allykelly again, that’s why I said I thought this video was pretty accurate for when 5H were still together. Dinah and Camila use a lot more actual head voice in the last few years instead of just mostly falsetto. I’m not saying I think you’re wrong about your assessment it’s just the girls have changed vocally even recently. In the last few years, Lauren’s regained her support up to C5, Camila and Dinah have improved considerably with both their upper and lower registers, Ally sings with a lighter approach, and Normani mixes her belts more just to give a few examples.
Even though not all of these are relatively recent examples, this is a good demonstration of the differences between Camila and Lauren in their belting range.
      ruclips.net/video/p_02YdPv6FA/видео.html
Lauren is stronger and clearer up to about B4 (sometimes C5) but Camila is able to carry ease and quality much further up in her belting range than Lauren. If Lauren was a mezzo soprano I think I’d say she still takes it, but considering they’re both sopranos and Lauren starts sounding rough around C#5 while Camila can maintain decent quality up to F#5 (though the consistency is arguable), I can’t say Lauren is a better belter overall than Camila. I think she naturally is, but functionally is a different story. They both have strengths and weaknesses and I think Lauren has better projection but Camila is more dynamic, which interestingly seems to be inverted in their lower registers.

Ok just because Camila is more comfy on the upper belt doesn't make her better than Lauren Lauren applies better and viable technique from G4-C#5 better coordination better breath support, and better vibrato.
