Fran: I'm a fan and patron. I'm also a retired engineer with a couple degrees who had what I consider to be a more-or-less successful career. This is not because I was ever recognized or awarded for anything, but because I generally enjoyed my work and was compensated well enough to provide a comfortable life for my family. I'd like to explain why I admire you ... and even envy you. Like you (and most of us) I question my life. For me, this is the tough question: If I hadn't shown up, what would have happened? The answer, for me and I think for most people, is: Everything would have gone exactly the same way! E.G. I worked at GE Aviation for 12 years. Some of the stuff I worked on there was pretty cool (I thought). And if I never applied there ... what? They would have hired someone else to do EXACTLY THE SAME THING! In my 40+ year career I have never made a personal statement of any kind. Not even once! So you have FranLab. I like it, for a lot of reasons I won't go into. Maybe some people don't. Maybe they think it's a waste of time and Internet bandwidth. That's cool. The point is, IT'S YOURS! IT WOULD NOT EXIST WITHOUT YOU! Don't lose site of that.
That, Ms. Fran, is why I want to be JUST LIKE YOU when I grow up.

Wow! I appreciate the time and thoughtful insight you delivered in your post. Success or what is considered success is tricky when it’s predicated upon values that are not really your own. People can feel and know their work and even their life, is brimming with meaning, significance and personal validation without the need to be validated by someone else’s yardstick.
Fran is a genuine American hero. And your comments about her, well- no higher compliment is possible.

I can identify with what you're feeling. After 30+ years doing a certain job, I was replaced before I expected to leave. It's been almost 4 years for me and a few health issues and I'm still looking for motivation. These times force many of us to look inward. That doesn't have to be bad. I hope all of us can find ways we can all contribute to a better world. Best wishes...

You are essentially correct when you say that RUclips isn't a business with an end game. If the brand is *you* then that's not really a business you can sell. So unless you can get enough money while the going is good like Joe Rogan, then it's always going to feel like there is no end game. BUT it's still vastly better than working 9-5 for the man punching the clock.
And whilst there might not be a monetary end-game, what you get in return is a name for yourself and a core audience that will follow whatever you do.

Personally, my take is that RUclips really ought to be viewed more as a hobby and not a job. I see this a LOT from quite a few channels where they go into this expecting to get rich and famous off of video creation (I'm talking Joe Rogan, PewDiePie and Lucas the Spider levels of rich and famous), shitting on anybody who dares to use an ad blocker or suggest they use Patreon donations to fund their content and they often develop that attitude of "It's owed to me. I'm owed money because I made a "good" video. I should be paid for that.". Now, I'm not accusing Fran of doing that. My hope is that she's a little better about it and I do think that she is approaching her RUclips thing as more of a hobby and not a job. Fran does seem to enjoy doing this despite all the issues that come with the territory. I've seen channels whose content I liked just simply disappear because of things like this.
One channel in particular was Abandoned Exploration Adventure. The guy who ran it, Ben, seemed like one of those shining examples of how NOT to do it as far as RUclips is concerned. It seemed like every video, just about, was one where he was complaining about something, trolls in the comments, meagre funds, the fact that his stuff didn't get enough (or any) views. He seemed to have that attitude where, I don't want to say that he was desperate, but you could tell very clearly that he regarded RUclips as a virtual gold mine and all he had to do was get people to like, subscribe and donate their money so that he could go traveling and whatnot to make more videos. It didn't seem as if he really thought of what he did as anything more than a means to pay his bills or monetize his lifestyle, even though he'd frequently tell the viewers that he did it for fun. And the quality of his content, while perfectly watchable, was average, maybe a little below average in places.
12voltvids is another one whose attitude I've found to be less than stellar with respect to the whole ad blocker issue. He really seemed to have it out for anybody who dared to be security conscious enough to have one running and he similarly had the mindset of "I make these videos so I HAVE to make money from them. I believe I should earn money from my "hobby".". Well, if you're hurting that damned much for money GO BACK TO WORK. Fran, apparently, can't do that, but Mr. 12voltvids can. And he does as he works customer service at his local telephone company (or did the last time I spoke with him). It got to the point where I decided to stop watching his content because I couldn't tolerate him complaining about how his "revenue" was "drying up" due to ad blocker usage among his viewers. I have not been back to his channel and I never will. His content was perfectly watchable, maybe a little bit better in quality than Ben at Abandoned Exploration Adventure's, but the "I'm OWED money because I made a video." attitude turns me right off. Thank God Fran Blanche hasn't fallen to that low... yet. And I hope she never does.
The thing I want anyone reading this to take away from it is this: Yes, I can understand and accept that you do this as a kind of "job" for (insert your reasons here). Like everybody else, you have life expenses to attend to, be it bills, rent, groceries, medical emergencies or simply the need to get away from it all for a little bit. I'm okay with people using their RUclips hobbies to earn a little money for those all-important needs. What I have a problem with is any creator bitching and moaning about how they don't earn enough and nobody's watching and there's too many trolls, making it seem as if all they are interested in is parting ME, the viewer, from money I don't have just so THEY can *MAYBE* produce a video next week. I get it. The economy sucks right now. We've got riots and protests ON TOP OF a worldwide viral disease pandemic ON TOP OF stupid politicians and their continued efforts to de-humanize the citizenry and destroy once-great nations. I have been out of work since the end of January 2009. I'm also 40 years old, AND unmarried. Ain't NOBODY bending over backwards to give ME a job OR a wife OR ANYTHING in the way of money. I have to make do with what I have, like it or not. This is why I CAN'T donate. Also, I don't want my only working computer to get infected with malware so I MUST run some type of ad blocker and antivirus to protect the ONLY computer I have because I CAN'T BUY A NEW ONE. So PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE DON'T complain about your issues with money. DON'T expect endless riches from RUclips. It's a hobby AT BEST. It is NOT a job. Do this because you enjoy doing it, NOT because you have to. When your hobby stops being a hobby and starts being a "job", THAT is when "The Feeling's Gone" (to quote the title of a B.B. King song).

Totally endorse this reply(EEV blog). With all due respect to Fran’s world-wise commentary (literally), this channel is not standard fare.
To be thoughtful, wise, gentle alone will not yield 200K subscribers. My recent addition to Fran’s viewership is just one example of being engaged very spontaneously by someone (Fran) who comes across as sincere, self reliant and resilient in a way I can only dream of.
One could easily elaborate further as to the reasons for the success of this channel (loyal viewership) but the principal point to be made is that many others like me, whose paths would not ordinarily cross with this bohemian treasure, feel a powerful connection.
For what it is worth, I would humbly suggest that one positive end game, building on a significant following, might be to round out the vlogs with an whimsical autobiographical written account of the experience gained over a lifetime of following one’s own compass. There is a lot to learn from an account written in the compelling style which the vlog illustrates.🕊🕊🕊

I think a major problem with RUclips is that for the viewers it's an supportive social experience (I'm sure many of us following Franlab feel like being with an oldtime friend while watching a video) but the makers never get to see or know their audience and miss this rewarding feel of friendship and personal importance.

RUclips is just a platform and there are now lots of those. You've gone from a maker to a story-teller and there's no shame in that. Story teller, educator, kind person. When I think about professional story tellers (writers, tv makers, movie makers), they too, live a life of episodes. They tell one story and move on to the next. The beauty of Maker-storyteller-educators is that you can be satisfied with the craft, make the story and move on. Restless hearts, compulsive crafters and dreamers are always exploring. The fact that you can share that with others is a beautiful thing.

Watching this hit me in the feels a bit. I've learned so much from You Fran. Not even specific stuff, just process. You've made Me a far better artful bodger than I ever was before (I wouldn't deign to call Myself an engineer, not good enough) so I do want to thank You for that. Thanks.

Have you considered doing some electronic kits for sale? I mean, start small, do 20 or 50 small kits, something fun and interesting to build, but accessible to people just starting. I know I'd be interested. Then do a build video with step by step instructions
    I know Clive does this.
Run a poll or two maybe to see if there are more than just me. :)

"FranKits" probably wouldn't financially feasible it does take a lot of work to design, prototype, and build kits. She might be able to do some as a kind of novelty thing for subcribers but how far would that really go? To really make anything you would have to involve a lot of people to help manufacturer the kits, mail the kits, assemble them ect. So yeah "Frankits" probably wouldn't work but it's a fun idea.

I'm an occasional visitor to the Fran Lab. I really should come more often, but I've been trying to wean myself off of YT a bit. :/ Anyway, I really enjoyed your heartfelt talk. I also couldn't help but look at all of the tantalizing audio equipment you have behind you. I'm currently working on reengineering my home theater which has a number if interesting components in it. For example, I ripped the passive crossover out of my main (left/right) speakers (Polk Monitor Series II M70s, in case anyone is interested) and now use a MiniDSP active crossover to send signals to two vintage Carver TFM-15cb amplifiers (for the mid/bass and bass drivers) and two S5 Electronics kit built mono tube amps (tweeters). I am by no means an expert or knowledgeable at all when it comes to the guts of electronic equipment. But I'm inspired to dive into projects I normally wouldn't even dream of tackling when I come here and that's what counts. Like I said, I'm getting "The Itch" again to do things with my home theater (which is my version of a mad scientist lab), so I'll be coming by here a little more often, I think. The inspiration I get is delicious and I savor every little bit of it. Take care and keep on making videos! :)

Fran, I feel your pain. You are an amazing brilliant person. You have done so many things so many people only dream of doing. Sometimes it's the process instead of the end result that's important. Everyone's future is uncertain right now, it's important for each of us to still keep surviving. Steal some of TechMoan's format! I love hearing your Fran-take on basic items of technology. I first discovered FranLab with your discussion on 45 rpm records. And, I now enjoy quality Palomino pencils thanks to your talk on Pens & Pencils. Great Stuff!! While I appreciate your deep dive engineering builds, I simply don't have the patience or interest in many of them. It's a VERY niche audience for that stuff.

I'm so glad you're feeling better! It was really good to know that you took the time to take care of yourself.
Regarding the contracting issues workout having a degree: I can somehow understand where those rules are coming from. In the industry we had this already long time ago coming. I remember Bil Herd talking about how he got into Commodore without an academic degree (if I remember correctly). Nowadays, the are companies building hardware that will not employ someone without a bachelor's degree. Some even require a master's just for ordinary development work.
A possible reason might be, that not skilled workes are running a company (or a museum), but rather manager-type people without high skills in the actual field the company plays in. That leads to issues, because they are usually not able to judge a self-taught person's skills by looking at their work. Managers want to insure themselves from making bad decisions, like hiring unqualified employees. So they use some kind of "insurance" somebody is qualified to a certain standard, which is the academic degree.
That's why I force myself through engineering and grad school: I see it as an investment in my future, finding doors easier to open with a piece of paper in my hands (and if course the skills matching). I know it's sad, but as I said, I can see where this is coming from.
I don't know the rules in the US, but maybe there is a way for you, Fran, to get a practical certification? Like a technician's degree or something similar? I would hope this is enough for some museum or restoration business to hire or contract you?
I know the pain of undergraduate theory lectures and exams, so I can really understand why someone with a lot of practical skills would shy away from that.
But maybe a less theory-heavy degree would be okay for you, and could open otherwise closed doors to something you would love to do.
Keep up the good work! I'm looking forward to your new videos. From my experience with your content they will be interesting.
    Greetings from Germany!

Fran, take heart. You have enriched MANY lives . . . you have 151k followers! You are clearly an incredibly gifted person (I won't say woman, because that implies that it's unusual for a woman to be gifted - I happen to be the dad of an incredibly gifted woman, as were many of her friends, so I KNOW that how untrue that is). You are an excellent presenter, and are visually and personally attractive (I'm afraid that does matter in visual media), and you are especially gifted in making complicated things understandable and engaging. Plus, you have a knack for picking extremely interesting topics, from a wide range of areas. Like you, I am an autodidact. My frustration at not having a degree being held against me led me to spend lots of $$$ in my 30s and early 40s getting a BA and MEd, and killing myself working full time with a little baby at home (60s now). And all it ever got me was the ability to teach some adjunct courses. But I did get one good thing from my MEd: the fad at that time was "constructivism" - the idea that the best and most profound learning comes from getting lost in a problem and working your way out of it - autodidactism! You are like the ultimate example. What we all want, though half of us don't realize it, is MEANING. With all the enjoyment, fascination, knowledge, entertainment (yes, you are VERY entertaining!) you have given to so many people, you have the meaning thing down. Most people never have that. I'm heading to Patreon, and as a 50 year musician/composer/sound designer (how did THAT happen?), I have to look into some Frantones!!!!! THANK YOU, and the best in all you endeavor-

We're all in a state of transition.
    Literally, millions of us.
But with great change comes great opportunity.
Like you, I am approaching this on two fronts.
First - What is it that I want to do?
Second - What do I enjoy doing?
The next aspect is to define what the end goal.
For me, the answer is make the world a better place.
The good news is, there's a lot that need to be done.
The downside is, finding the team and resources to do it.
Thankfully, I'm not ready to walk away so we'll keep plugging away at these variables until the right opportunity appears.
