  • I caught wind of this hidden gem from a dude on the chairlift at Kicking Horse last season. When most people think of skiing in Alberta your mind instantly wanders to Lake Louise & Sunshine Village. He was right.. Castle Mountain Resort is absolutely unbelievable! It is loaded with steep fall line terrain that could keep the biggest chargers ski & snowboard cravings satiated. The glades off of the North side and Huckleberry ridge are world class and the skiing is great from top to bottom. The tides were low when I visited mid-February but it didn’t stop me from having an amazing time. The strong winds loaded up the chutes and glades and I was getting face shots with only 1cm of fresh snow. I just missed the massive end of February storm at Castle and I’ve heard they’ve got the deepest base in Alberta right now! Don’t sleep on Castle Mountain Resort if you’re close by, it is the perfect addition to your powder highway itinerary.

    Love your enthusiasm! Love Castle have skied it for years. My son and I hit it every year and many, many times we have come just after an overnight dump. Too bad you had a low snow day but that is what it has been like this season (23/24). The wind sift grooms the slopes every night and leaves this buttery sift that is like skiing in icing sugar even if it hasn’t snowed. The unbroken fall lines to be had are the greatest. The chute side offers the best and longest unbroken fall line steeps I know of. The tree runs in the north bowl are awesome too. Parking is usually really close to the main lodge, which is refreshing. Occasionally the tamarack lift is clogged due to a pow day turn out, as everyone and their dog abandons their gainful employment for face shots at Castle. The Tamarack can have wind closures so it is often wise to check on the conditions before making the trek, however you can always alt to Fernie which is only an hour down the road and usually has great snow. Keep up the great work!

    • @riseandalpine
      @riseandalpine  3 месяца назад

      You and your son must have so many good memories up there. WIND SIFT is so epic and the unbroken fall line is just delicious. Not an inch of fall line is wasted at Castle. Whistler should take notes.

    Definitely like the extra stuff with the skiing! Getting coffee, crappy motels, It’s all part of it! Here in Australia I often stay in the towns a little further from the resort to save money (when I’m not with the kids) and it is often more fun than staying closer to the hill.

Not sure where they're going to put it, or if they'll replace one of the old horses, but things are moving and shaking around Castle this year. You also completely missed the Huckleberry chair. Of course it's a way smaller section of the hill, and it's mostly groomies, but it's a wicked side for shredding hot laps, and the Cat skiing gate is at the top. The ridge continues up and you can ski the back side of that, too, as if there wasn't already plenty of epic to be had in bounds.. Open to public skinning & boot packing most Tuesday's & Wednesdays, when conditions permit.

I hope your truck has a really big gas tank because the cost of filling it is as scary as the lift lines you show at Whistler. Castle looks great in a primitive, positive, kind of way. I'm interested in the Zeal glasses. I have a problem with goggles which pinch my nose while wearing a Scott Symbol 2 Plus helmet, this inhibits my ability to breath through the nose. It looked like the Zeal was wide over the nose and doesn't squeeze the nostrils. Is that correct?

      29 days at Fernie -5 or 6 solid pow days.
      11 days at Castle -4 or 5 solid pow days.
      Still lots of terrain on both resorts we haven't come close to skiing yet, but want to. We recently hiked up Siberia ridge for the first time at Fernie, and did Huckleberry ridge for the first time at Castle. Amazing on both counts. Between the two resorts, you could spend a solid week at each, and begin to get a decent idea of what both have to offer, but not nearly have covered everything.

      Castle Mountain Resort, Alberta (December 31, 2023) - Castle Mountain Resort has reached an agreement in principle to acquire the Angel Express Quad Chairlift, from Sunshine Village Ski Resort. Once removed from use at Sunshine, it is the resort’s intent to transport and reinstall the lift at Castle. At this point Castle has yet to determine the timeline and location for reinstallation.
      “We are excited to be acquiring such a great lift from a reputable industry partner”, said Dean Parkinson, Castle Mountain Resort General Manager. “It is a great thing to be keeping this lift in Alberta and we appreciate Sunshine’s willingness to work with us, on this purchase” he continued.
      Once reinstalled, the lift will represent Castle’s first high-speed, detachable chairlift. When information is available on the reinstallation location and the expected timeline, the resort expects to share this in future press releases.
